UC won its first 17 home games last season - the best start in Fifth Third Arena history - before dropping a decision to then-no. 11 Louisville on Feb. 22, last game RECAP: cincinnati 69, morehead state 61 (AP) - Farad Cobb scored 24 points in 28 minutes after coming off the bench to lead Cincinnati (2-0) to a victory over Morehead State on Wednesday. Cobb, a junior-college transfer who played his freshman year at Chattanooga, made 8 of 14 shots, including 6 of 9 from 3-point range, in scoring his Division I career-high 24 points. Octavius Ellis added 16 points and Troy Caupain 13. Brent Arrington scored 21 points to lead the Eagles (1-2) with Angelo Warner adding 14 and Kareem Storey 11. Neither team shot well, both at 37 percent, and both had 35 rebounds. But Cincinnati went to the free-throw line 34 times and made 22, including Ellis, who made 10 of 13. The Eagles made 12 of 16. The game was tied with 17:11 left. Cobb sparked a run, making four 3-pointers and adding three more points during the surge. The Bearcats scored their last nine points at the line to hold off the Eagles. Trio signs with bearcats Head coach Mick Cronin announced on Wednesday the signings of Jacob Evans, Justin Jenifer and Tre Scott for the season. Evans, a 6-foot-6, 210-pound forward from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, averaged 17.5 points, 7.2 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 3.5 steals as a junior at St. Michael High School. A consensus four-star prospect, Evans performed well in summer AAU events - the Pangos All-American Camp and the Fab 48 Tournament in Las Vegas - to earn the tab as one of the nation s fastest rising prospects. Evans is listed as a Top 100 prospect according to Rivals.com and Scout. com and ranks second in the Times-Picayune Terrific 20 Class of Jacob can handle, distribute and score the ball, Cronin said. His future is bright and we are fortunate he is coming to UC. He is a big-time recruit for us in many ways. Jenifer, a 5-foot-10, 160-pound point guard from Baltimore, Maryland, averaged 17.3 points, 12 assists and five rebounds as a junior at Millford Mills Academy. Tabbed a four-star prospect and Top-100 selection by 247Sports and a three-star talent and Top-150 player by Rivals.com, Jenifer posted 12 double-doubles as a junior and was named to the Baltimore Sun All-Metro team. As a sophomore, he helped lead the Millers to the Maryland Class 3A State Championship, contributing 17 points, seven assists and seven rebounds in the title game. Justin is a super quick point guard, an exciting player that can make the game easier for his teammates, Cronin said. Justin s passing and ballhandling skills are exceptional. He is a proven winner in high school. Scott, a 6-foot-7, 203-pound forward from Darien, Georgia, averaged 22.3 points, 13.7 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 3.7 blocks as a junior at McIntosh County Academy. Named a Georgia Region 2A Player of the Year, Scott is listed as a three-star prospect by 247 Sports, Scout.com, Rivals.com and ESPN. The 247 Sports recruiting service also lists Scott as one of the top 20 players in the state and top 50 forwards in the nation. Tre can play and defend multiple positions, Cronin said. He has the length to block shots and the footwork to defend guards. He can knock down the open shot and pass the ball. Tre is a great student and high character young man. 3

COBB S NOTeWORTHY NIGHT Junior transfer guard Farad Cobb made quite the impression in just his second game in a Bearcats jersey on Wednesday when he poured in a game-high 24-points, including six three-pointers, in UC s win over Morehead State. Cobb hit 6 of 9 from beyond the arc, marking the most three-pointers by a Bearcat since Sean Kilpatrick had six (6 of 12) last season at UCF on Feb. 19. Cobb came within one more three-pointer from matching his career high. He drilled seven threes (six in the first half) and scored 21 points while setting the freshman record at Chattanooga in a loss to Kansas on Nov. 15, Finishing with 24 points against Morehead State, Cobb becomes the first 20-point scorer for UC this season. It was a career high for the junior, besting his 21-point performance against Kansas while at Chattanooga. NEW LOOK BEARCATS The edition of Bearcats looks vastly different from last season s squad that won a share of the inaugural American Athletic Conference regular-season crown with five returning scorers and seven newcomers. The seven newcomers on the roster is the second largest group of new faces on a UC roster during the Mick Cronin era. Only Cronin s first team ( ) featured more newcomers with 10 as the rebuilding job began. That squad included only one returning scholarship player. The roster also features plenty of height as seven players are 6-feet-7 or taller. Three players - Coreontae DeBerry (6-foot-9), Octavius Ellis (6-foot-10) and Jamaree Strickland (6-foot-10) are 6-feet-9 or taller. The average player on this season s team is 6-foot-5 and a half. The Bearcats return two starters in forward Shaq Thomas (6.8 ppg, 2.8 rpg) and guard Ge Lawn Guyn (3.7 ppg, 1.0 rpg). Both started all 34 games last season. Three other players - forward Jermaine Sanders (21.3 minutes per game), guard Troy Caupain (19.1 mpg) and guard Kevin Johnson (10.2 minutes) logged at least 10 minutes a game. Despite a squad filled with so many new faces, the Bearcats may bring the same defensive intensity that has become commonplace under UC s Mick Cronin. In the season opener Friday against Saint Francis, UC brought more of its typical smothering defense, limiting the Red Flash to 37 points. The 37 points were among the fewest points allowed nationally on opening night. In the 157 games played on Nov. 14 only Wisconsin (62-31 Northern Kentucky), UC Irvine (87-36 over Chapman) and Coastal Carolina (79-36 over Trinity Baptist) held their opponent to fewer points. Temple matched UC s defensive effort, in a home win over American U. It marked the fourth time in the Cronin coaching era a UC team had held a foe under 40 points in a game, matching defensive efforts against Dayton (68-34 home win on Nov. 27, 2010), West Virginia (62-39 road win on Jan. 30, 2008) and Howard (70-39 home win on Nov. 10, 2006). The Bearcats limited the Red Flash to 30.0 percent shooting for the game, surrendering only six field goals apiece in each half. Saint Francis was 4 of 16 for 25.0 percent shooting from three-point range. UC forced Saint Francis into 21 turnovers. The Bearcats forced their opponent into 20 or more turnovers in five games last season. UC has held both opponents this season below 70 points. The Bearcats held 31 of 34 opponents under 70 points last season. UC ranked among the nation s Top 25 teams in several categories last season: scoring defense (fourth at 58.4 points), turnover margin (17th at 3.2), field-goal percentage defense (19th at.395), blocked shots per game (20th at 5.5), steals per game (20th at 7.9), scoring margin (23rd at +10.0) and offensive rebounds per game (23rd at 13.44). UC s 58.4 points allowed last season were the fewest by a Bearcats squad since the season (52.9). newcomers showing promise early Cobb is not the only newcomer showing promise early this season. Junior forward Octavius Ellis has started fast, leading the team with 14.5 points per game to go with 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 blocks. He is shooting 61.5 percent (8 of 13) from the field and 72.2 percent (13 of 18) from the free-throw line. 5 three steals in Cincinnati s season opener against Saint Francis. He shot 5 of 8 from the field and 3 of 5 from the free-throw line in his first game back with the Bearcats since the campaign. Playing the past two seasons at Trinity Valley College (Texas), Ellis became the first incoming transfer to start a season opener at UC since Mike Williams (against South Dakota on Nov. 16, 2008). Ellis had 16 points, seven rebounds and three blocks against Morehead State on Wednesday. Freshman forward Gary Clark is averaging 6.0 points, 7.0 rebounds and 2.0 steals after two games. He grabbed a game-high eight rebounds against Morehead State on Wednesday. Clark tallied 10 points and six rebounds to go with a game-high four steals against Saint Francis in the season opener on Nov. 14. He shot 5 of 8 from the field and pulled in a game-high four offensive rebounds. Clark became the first true freshman to start a season opener since Lance Stephenson (against Prairie View A&M on Nov. 16, 2009). Stephenson scored seven points in 22 minutes of play. In scoring 10 points against Saint Francis, Clark also became the fifth Bearcat freshman to score 10 or more points in his first collegiate game. He joined Sean Kilpatrick (21 points vs. Mount St. Mary s on Nov. 15, 2010), Cashmere Wright (12 points vs. Prairie View A&M on Nov. 16, 2009), Yancy Gates (16 points, 11 rebounds vs. South Dakota on Nov. 16, 2008) and Larry Davis (11 points vs. Belmont on Nov. 9, 2007). Freshman forward Quadri Moore tallied nine points on 4-of-8 shooting to go with two rebounds, two steals and a three-pointer against Saint Francis. caupain growing into floor general Sophomore Troy Caupain has averaged 10.5 points and 5.0 assists in his first two game as UC s starting point guard. He has 10 assists with four turnovers - a 2.5-to-1 assistto-turnover ratio - to start the year. He registered a 2.04-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio during conference play last season. Caupain played a career-high 31 minutes against Morehead State on Wednesday, tallying 13 points, to go with five rebounds, six assists and only 1 turnover. The squad defeated a Bahamian professional basketball team, the PJ Stingers, 94-64, but also enjoyed Nassau and the Atlantis Resort. Besides relaxing in the sun, the team also took a snorkeling trip and some members of the squad later went deep sea fishing. Arguably the most important aspect of the trip was the 10 days of extra practice the young squad gained leading up to the trip to the Bahamas. College teams are allowed one foreign trip every four academic years according to the NCAA. Cincinnati s last trip outside the United States came in 2010 when the Bearcats traveled to Ottawa, Canada, for contests with McGill, Carleton and the University of Ottawa. cincinnati tradition - By the numbers 2 National Titles (1961, 1962) 6 Final Fours ( , 1992) 8 Elite Eights (Last: 1996) 10 Sweet Sixteens (Last: 2012) 28 NCAA Tournament Appearances 18 NCAA Tournament Appearances since NIT Appearances 28 Conference Regular-Season Titles (Last: 2014) 10 Conference Tournament Titles (Last: 2004 [C-USA]) 1,684 all-time wins (19th most in nation) 30 All-Americans (Last: Sean Kilpatrick [2014]) 71 All-Conference Selections (Last: Sean Kilpatrick & Justin Jackson [2014]) 56 NBA Draft Picks (Last: Lance Stephenson [2010]) 49 members of 1,000-point club (T-9th most in nation) 388 weeks ranked in AP Top 25 (12th most in nation) 203 weeks ranked in AP Top weeks ranked No. 1 2 Members of National Basketball Hall of Fame Jack Twyman & Oscar Robertson 2 Olympic Gold Medalists Robertson (1960) & George Wilson (1964) 5

7 cincinnati head COACH mick cronin The Mick Cronin File Hometown: Cincinnati, Ohio Alma Mater: University of Cincinnati 97 Family: daughter, Samantha (8) Coaching Experience: Assistant Coach Cincinnati Associate Head Coach Louisville Head Coach Murray State 2007-Pres. - Head Coach Cincinnati cronin coaching notes Ranks among the top 20 coaches in the nation in win percentage (14th at.7196) and wins (15th at 77) since the start of the season. (Rankings entering Friday.) Named the 2014 American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year and a nominee for national coach of the year consideration. Owns an record during last four-plus seasons with four consecutive trips to the NCAA tournament, including a 2012 Sweet 16 appearance. Has directed six teams to the NCAA tournament as a head coach. Has taken 13 teams as a head coach or assistant. Ranks as the nation s winningest college basketball coach age 43 or younger entering the campaign. Mick Cronin has restored the University of Cincinnati men s basketball program to that of national-contender status coming off a campaign that saw the Bearcats claim a share of the inaugural American Athletic Conference crown and advance to the NCAA Tournament for a fourth consecutive season. Despite earning only one vote in the preseason Associated Press poll, Cronin guided the Bearcats to their most successful season since Cincinnati posted a 27-7 record, winning 15 of 18 conference games while ranking among the national leaders in several defensive categories. UC s 2014 NCAA tournament appearance elevated the program into a select group as one of only 16 in the nation to make the trip during each of the past four seasons. Cincinnati s 101 wins since the start of the season highlight one of the most successful periods in program history with four 20-win seasons, including three years with at least 26 victories. Along the way, the Bearcats have appeared in the national polls each season, earning their highest ranking at No. 7 during UC was listed among the top 15 teams in the AP poll during each of the last eight weeks of the regular season last year. For his accomplishments last season, Cronin was recognized by his peers, earning conference coach of the year and National Basketball Coaches Association District 25 Coach of the Year accolades. He was also nominated for national coach of the year consideration. The program s current trajectory is in stark contrast from where Cronin found it when he was named head coach at his alma mater in March His first season featured a roster with only one returning letterman. But with unrelenting determination Cronin went to work and spearheaded what could be considered one of the nation s top rebuilding efforts. Cincinnati was the only program from a major conference to improve its win total every season from 2007 to 2011, building from 11 wins in 2007 to 26 victories and a return to the NCAA tournament in A year later, the Bearcats won 26 games again and defeated eight ranked teams while finishing second in the BIG EAST Tournament and advancing to the school s first NCAA Sweet 16 appearance since Coupled with trips to the NCAA Tournament each of the past two seasons, UC has solidified its place on the national stage. In eight seasons at Cincinnati, Cronin has compiled a mark and owns a record in 11 years as a college head coach. TRACK RECORD OF SUCCESS Success seems to follow Cronin, who came to UC after serving three years as head coach at Murray State ( ). As mentor of the Racers, Cronin compiled a overall record while earning a pair of NCAA tournament berths. In his debut season as head coach, Cronin directed Murray State to a school-best 28-6 record, the Ohio Valley Conference tournament championship, and an NCAA tournament appearance. His 28 wins are the sixth most in NCAA history for a first-year head coach. He earned OVC Coach of the Year honors two seasons later, guiding Murray State COMMENTS ON CRONIN to another OVC regular-season title, league tournament crown and NCAA Tournament appearance with a 24-6 mark in Prior to earning a head coaching position, Cronin built a sterling reputation for his ability to evaluate and recruit top talent. In his stint at UC as an assistant coach for Bob Huggins from , Cronin recruited several top players, including NBA Draft selections Steve Logan (Golden State); DerMarr Johnson (Atlanta); Pete Mickeal (Dallas); Kenny Satterfield (Dallas); and Jason Maxiell (Detroit). Following the season, Cronin became the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator at Louisville, under Rick Pitino. In his first year, Cronin helped attract a top-10 ranked recruiting class. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT Cronin s passion for success on the court also carries over to the local community where he is committed to making a difference. He currently serves as a board member on the American Cancer Society s Coaches vs. Cancer of Southwest Ohio chapter. He also assists with a major fundraising event - Soul of the City Soiree - for Our Daily Bread that has generated more than $100,000 each of the past three years to assist the soup kitchen located in the Over-the-Rhine area of Cincinnati. Cronin also annually speaks with the Young Executive Group of the Catholic Inner-City Schools Education (CISE) Fund. The group raises money from area corporations to help give children from low income urban settings the opportunity to attend Catholic schools. During the season, Cronin also wrote a column in the Cincinnati Enquirer cautioning Cincinnatians of the dangers of texting while driving as part of the AT&T sponsored It Can Wait campaign. He spotlighted the campaign again at an on-campus event in October PATH TO COACHING Cronin has long held great pride in the Queen City, the University of Cincinnati and the sport of basketball. As a child growing up on the west side of town, he used to follow his father, Harold Hep Cronin -- a highly successful local high school coach with more than 400 career wins -- around the gyms of Cincinnati. A product of LaSalle High School, Cronin had his playing career end sooner than expected due to a knee injury in high school. That didn t stop his desire to find his place in basketball. While completing his undergraduate degree at UC, Cronin served as assistant varsity coach and head junior varsity coach at Woodward High School. He helped develop six players who went on to play Division I college basketball, including former Bearcat Damon Flint, who ranks among the top 25 scorers in program history. Cronin made the jump from high school to college coaching during the season joining Huggins as video coordinator at UC. A year later, Cronin was elevated to an assistant coach for the Bearcats, setting the stage for his long tenure in college basketball. Cronin resides in Cincinnati with his eight-year old daughter, Samantha. Mick has done an outstanding job in an extremely difficult situation. The odds were against him but he was persistent and got the Bearcats over the hump and into the NCAA tournament where they should be a regular at knocking on that door every March. - Andy Katz, ESPN Mick Cronin has taken Cincinnati from basketball purgatory to the level of perennial NCAA contender. When Mick first took the job, the Bearcats roster was in worse condition than most mid-major programs. Since that point, Mick has built Cincinnati into a national program that s won 74 games in the last three seasons and advanced to three straight NCAA Tournaments. The job he s done at his alma mater is second to none, and he s far from finished. - Jon Rothstein, College Basketball Insider, CBS Sports Network Mick Cronin has done a tremendous job at Cincinnati. He took over a program that needed a new culture of winning, and he built a solid foundation in the nation s toughest basketball league. He s been disciplined, and has demanded the same from his players. Mick has instilled belief in his players and has worked incredibly hard to lead Cincinnati back to national prominence. - Jay Bilas, ESPN From starting with not much more than a few basketballs and an empty gym, and playing in a league that routinely produced No. 1 NCAA seeds and Final Four teams, Mick elevated the Bearcats to 26 victories and an NCAA Tournament berth within five seasons. And he did this with players who ve lifted the program s academic rating and graduated from the university. It might be the most underrated coaching performance of the past two decades in college basketball. It s darned near a miracle. - Mike DeCourcy, Sporting News 7
