3 Notes HAVE YOU HERD? Junior Leah Scott (Detroit, Mich.) scored a game-high 19 points to help lift the Thundering Herd to a win over Bluefield College, Friday. Junior center Chukwuka Ezeigbo (Trenton, N.J.) had a careerhigh 14 rebounds for the Herd, and senior Suporia Dickens (Freeport, Ill.) scored seven of her 10 points in the second half. She also had eight rebounds. Freshman guard McKenzie Akers (Princeton, W.Va.) made a trio of threes for nine points in her Marshall debut. NEWCOMER CONTRIBUTIONS Five new members of the Herd made their debuts in Friday s home opener versus Bluefield College and combined for 37 of Marshall s 63 points. Newcomer Leah Scott (Detroit, Mich.) led all scorers with 19 points. Additionally, Marshall s roster features the most newcomers (10) in Conference USA, including five freshmen, three junior college transfers and two NCAA Division I transfers. EARLY RANKINGS After Week 1, the Herd ranks first in Conference USA for its scoring defense and field goal percentage defense, allowing 41 points (.264) versus Bluefield College in its home opener. Marshall is also atop the C-USA rankings for its 3-point defense, after holding the Rams to a 2-10 performance from 3-point range. The Herd also totaled 51 rebounds in its first win, making it the third-best rebounding offense in the conference. FIVE RETURNING STARTERS The Herd returns five starters for the season: sophomore Norrisha Victrum (Columbia, S.C.), junior Chukwuka Ezeigbo (Trenton, N.J.), seniors Orlandria Williams (Memphis, Tenn.) and Suporia Dickens (Freeport, Ill.) and redshirt senior Erica Woods (St. George, Bermuda). The five combined for 65 percent of the team s scoring and 61 percent of the team s rebounding last season. The upcoming 53rd meeting marks the most played series for the Herd, and the Mountaineers lead the all-time series, SCOUTING THE COLONIALS After finishing the season at 7-22, the Colonials were selected first in the 2013 NEC Preseason Poll with four returning starters. Senior forward and reigning NEC Player of the Year Artemis Spanou has recorded 25 consecutive double-doubles and is the all-time leader at RMU with 59. Spanou led the nation in rebounding at 15.6 per game IN , and she is the first RMU player to record 400 rebounds in a season. Sophomore Ashley Ravelli was the 2013 NEC Rookie of the Year in Friday, Robert Morris (0-1, 0-0 NEC) dropped its home opener, 65-63, against Hofstra. The Herd leads the all-time series versus Robert Morris, 9-2, and is 3-1 when playing in Moon Township, Pa.
