Few is also second in victories for sixth-year NCAA Division I head coaches, compiling a record, as well as also being second in victories for fifth-year (133-32) and fourth-year (105-29) NCAA Division I head coaches. Few also won more games in his first three seasons than anybody in NCAA history. His record after three seasons surpassed the 80 wins of Everett Case of North Carolina State ( ) and Bill Guthridge of North Carolina ( ). Few and former UCLA head coach Steve Lavin are the only coaches to take teams to the Sweet 16 in their first two seasons as a NCAA Division I coach since the bracket expanded to 64 teams in Few did it in , while Lavin accomplished the feat in Few has also won six straight WCC Coach of the Year honors.

Head Coach Mark Few Few has become more at Gonzaga University. And the Bulldog faithful who have proclaimed themselves Zag Nation are more than content with the combination of Head Coach Mark Few and more success in the national spotlight. The best season in the 100-plus year history of Bulldog basketball saw Gonzaga roll to a 29-4 record, a second 14-0 West Coast Conference campaign in three seasons, a 10 th WCC regular-season title, an eighth WCC Tournament crown and an eighth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament, the Bulldogs ninth trip to the event since With Few at the helm and national Player of the Year candidate Adam Morrison leading the nation in scoring, Few and the Bulldogs finished fifth in the final Associated Press Top 25, claimed a No. 3 seed into the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16 for the third time since Few took the reigns for the 200 season and the fourth time overall with Few a part of the coaching staff. All of that came on the heels of a 2005 season in which Few guided the Bulldogs to 10 th in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll and a third straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament second round. Few, in just seven years in the head seat on the Bulldog bench, has three Sweet 16 and three NCAA Second Round appearances in his seven trips to the tourney. He is one of only two coaches to lead a team into the Sweet Sixteen in their first two years as a head coach since the bracket was expanded to 64 teams in But winning and trips to the NCAA Tournament are becoming commonplace around the Gonzaga campus. Few s 159 victories after six seasons rank second on the 6-year list and his 133 victories rank second for a fifth-year head coach in NCAA Division I history as do his 105 wins through four seasons. Everett Case of North Carolina State sits atop all three lists with 161, 137 and 107, respectively, for the four, five and six-year periods of Few is the winningest coach in NCAA history for third-year head coaches with his 81 W s to surpass the 80 wins posted by Case ( ) and Bill Guthridge of the University of North Carolina ( ). While Few has continued Gonzaga s string of post-season success, there are some individual player honors he looks to with pride. Morrison, recognized as much for his diabetes as for his ability to score, became the first Bulldog since Frank Burgess in 1961 to lead the nation in scoring at 28.1 ppg Morrison was a household name across the country and he was up for every major Player of the Year award in the country. Morrison shared the Oscar Robertson Trophy with Duke University s J.J. Redick, was named the CBS Chevrolet Player of the Year and was a close runner-up to Redick in the Associated Press, Naismith Award and John R. Wooden Award balloting for Player of the Year. He was a unanimous All-America selection on the AP first team.

Head Coach Mark Few (continued) Morrison was taken as the third pick in the NBA Draft last spring, the Charlotte Hornets making Morrison the highest Gonzaga player ever drafted and validating the job Few and his staff did in developing Morrison s skills. Ronny Turiaf is another Few looks to with pride as Turiaf earned his second straight AP honorable mention accolade in 2005 and joined with then-sophomore Morrison to give the Bulldogs two players with AP All- America recognition in the same season for the second straight season. Blake Stepp was a second-team AP All- American in 2004 in addition to being a John R. Wooden Award Top 10 All-America pick. Few, who in such a relatively young career as a head coach is mentioned in the same breath with some of the more veteran coaches patrolling the sidelines, has also accomplished plenty of firsts since taking over the reigns for the season. Dan Dickau became Gonzaga s inaugural selection to the Associated Press All-America first team in 2002, and also was tabbed Gonzaga s first John R. Wooden Award Top Five All- American. The Bulldogs also cracked the Top 10 in the national polls for the first time in school history in 2002, finishing the season ranked sixth in the Associated Press Mark Few Birthdate... Gonzaga s 29-4 record also set a single-season mark for victories which was matched in A 10-year Gonzaga assistant head coach, Few was named head coach July 26, 1999, following Dan Monson's departure for the University of Minnesota. Few joined the Bulldogs for the season as a graduate assistant under former head coach Dan Fitzgerald, then was promoted to a fulltime assistant for the season. He had been named associate head coach in April of 1999 following a season in which the Bulldogs became the basketball darlings of the nation on their March run which saw Gonzaga come within a few ticks of the clock of advancing to the Final Four. A loss to eventual national champion University of Connecticut in the West Regional Finals in Phoenix, Ariz., ended the Cinderella story that captured basketball fans from coast to coast. Gonzaga University President Robert J. Spitzer, S.J., and director of athletics Mike Roth didn't hesitate in rewarding Few for his long loyalty to Gonzaga. "We are extremely fortunate to have a coach of Mark's caliber right here on our staff," Spitzer said. "He is a gifted strategist, and a man who buys into the University's mission 100 percent." "Mark had been an integral part of Gonzaga's success the last decade," Roth said. "I think that speaks well for the program when you can say your last two head coaches were promoted from within. It displays the loyalty they have had as assistants. We didn't give Mark the job, he earned it." Gonzaga has won 358 games over the past 14 seasons, won or shared 10 West Coast Conference championships, seven times captured the WCC Tournament title and has made 11 trips to post-season play in the last 12 campaigns. Only 18 times since the NCAA Tournament expanded to 64 teams has a school made three or more straight Sweet 16 appearances. Gonzaga is one of those ( ), and Few was a part of it all. In May of 2006 Few received a contract extension, which assures his presence on the Bulldog bench through His long-term agreement reflects the university's commitment to Few and his commitment to Gonzaga. This will allow Few to continue to build on success he has enjoyed at Gonzaga.

Head Coach Mark Few (continued) Few has always been known for getting the most out of players both and off the court. He is committed to total player development. Since Few arrived on the Gonzaga staff, the Bulldogs have produced 49 All-West Conference selections, eight WCC Player of the Year recipients and six Academic All-Americans. "When a young man enters the Bulldog basketball program, I believe it is our responsibility as coaches to help them reach their potential in every facet of their lives," Few said. "Our commitment to the players will always go far beyond the basketball court with a goal of producing the complete individual, one that Gonzaga University will be proud of long after their playing days. "Through the efforts of Mark, his wife Marcy, and assistant coach s wives Nicole Grier, Robin Rice and Chanelle Lloyd, the inaugural Coaches vs. Cancer Golf Tournament and Gala was held in September of The event has continued to grow and in the fall of 2005 surpassed the $1 million mark to benefit the American Cancer Society. It is the second largest Coaches vs. Cancer event in the country behind Coach Jim Boeheim of Syracuse University. Few and Marcy, married June 11, 1994, became parents with the arrival of Austin James (A.J.) Few on Jan. 18, 2000, followed by the arrival of Joseph Dillon on June 11, 2002, the Few s eighth wedding anniversary, and Julia Ann Elizabeth on June 25, The Few s wedding was more special because Rev. Norm Few, father of the groom, officiated. Rev. Few also married Bulldog assistant coaches Bill Grier and his wife Nicole, and Leon Rice and wife Robin. What They Say About Mark Few "Mark Few is a great person who happens to be a great coach. His hard work and dedication to Gonzaga over the past 13 years have helped elevate the Bulldogs to an "elite" status among NCAA basketball programs. He stresses excellence and commitment both on the floor and in the classroom. "Mark has been a tremendous representative of both Bulldog basketball and Gonzaga University. He, his staff and his team have enjoyed great success while holding true to his own principles and those of the university. Gonzaga basketball will continue to be successful under the leadership of Mark and his staff." John Stockton, Utah Jazz (retired) Gonzaga Class of '84 All-time NBA assists and steals leader I wanted to be a part of a program with guys who wanted to win, coaches who cared about players on and off the floor. I wanted to be part of a program that develops players to be the best they can be. Basketball is something that has always been important to me, and when transferring I knew basketball was important to the players and coaches at Gonzaga. Dan Dickau Gonzaga Class of 02 First-Team AP All-American John R. Wooden Award Top Five "I feel very lucky to have played for Coach Few. He helped teach me how to compete and how to be a leader. For that I am thankful." Matt Santangelo Gonzaga Class of '00 All-time Gonzaga assists leader "Coach Few gave me the freedom and opportunity to show my skills. He is the kind of coach every player wants to play for." Richie Frahm Gonzaga Class of ' National 3-point champion

Bill Grier Bulldogs Assistant Coach BILL GRIER ( ), University of Oregon '90, has been an integral part of Gonzaga University s arrival on the national scene. As the defensive coordinator for the Bulldogs, Grier has developed the program into one known for its defense as much as it is for its offense. Since Grier assumed the defensive role under former head coach Dan Monson, Gonzaga has led the West Coast Conference in field goal defense for seven of the last nine seasons, including the 2004 season when the Bulldogs set a school record by holding opponents to just 38.3 percent from the field, a mark that ranked third in the country. The Bulldogs also had one stretch of three straight seasons when opponents were held to less than 40.0 percent from the field. The year the Bulldogs didn t top the league they were a close second. After serving six years under Dan Fitzgerald as the restricted-earnings assistant, Grier was elevated to a full-time assistant for the season when Monson took the head coaching reigns. He faced one of his biggest coaching decisions in July, 1999, when Monson accepted the head coaching position at the University of Minnesota. Grier chose to remain a Bulldog, much to the delight of new head coach Mark Few. Bill takes a lot of pride in what has transpired at Gonzaga. He's played an integral role in a lot of things that have happened here," Few said. "He believes in the type of guys we recruit and play with, and he enjoys coaching those guys. He's as loyal to Gonzaga as the day is long. Bill made my transition to head coach much easier. During his two seasons under Monson, the Bulldogs went 52-17, won back-to-back WCC titles, went to the 1998 NIT Sweet Sixteen and made it to the 1999 NCAA Elite Eight. But Grier and Few haven't slowed down the past seven seasons, compiling a record over that span. In 2004 the 28-3 Bulldogs received a No. 2 seed into the NCAA Tournament after finishing the regular season ranked third in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll, in 2005 Gonzaga was a No. 3 seed and finished 10 th in the final AP balloting and in 2006 the Bulldogs finished fifth in the final AP poll and earned a No. 3 seed to the tournament. Prior to their Top 10 success of the past three seasons, the Bulldogs advanced to the Sweet 16 three straight seasons from In 2002 Gonzaga recorded a school-best 29-4 record, was ranked sixth in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. In 2003 the Bulldogs garnered their inaugural at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament after capturing the WCC regular-season title. In 2001 Gonzaga went 26-7 in winning both the WCC regular-season and tournament titles on their way to a third straight NCAA Sweet 16 appearance. In 2000 the Bulldogs went 26-9, winning the WCC Tournament title and advancing to the NCAA Sweet 16. The Bulldogs have won 358 games the past 14 years, and Grier has been a key ingredient for the Bulldogs' rise to national prominence. Under Few, Grier's main responsibilities are recruiting; floor coaching and guard play development; game preparation, and scouting in addition to his role of devising the defensive scheme. Grier started his coaching career at his alma mater, Cottage Grove High School in After serving two years as freshman coach, Grier was elevated to junior varsity coach and varsity assistant. Grier left Cottage Grove to be the head coach at Creswell High School during the season. Grier played two years in junior college (Central Oregon and Southwestern Oregon). He transferred to Oregon and received a B.S. degree. He married Nicole Styles Aug. 30, 1996, and the couple became parents with the arrival of Giselle Marie on March 3, 2006, just two days prior to Gonzaga s home semifinal game in the WCC Tournament.

Leon Rice Bulldogs Assistant Coach LEON RICE, ( ), Washington State University '86, didn t hesitate when head coach Mark Few called and asked Rice to come to Gonzaga University. Rice s hiring on July 30, 1999, completed Few s inaugural staff. And since becoming a Bulldog, Rice has contributed to the wildest ride in Gonzaga s storied basketball history. In his seven seasons Rice has been a major part of the Bulldogs NCAA Sweet 16 berths in 2000, 2001, and 2006; a NCAA berth in 2002; a 2003 NCAA second-round appearance that ended with a thrilling, albeit disappointing, double-overtime loss to top-seeded University of Arizona and second-round rides again in 2004 and 05. The Bulldogs finished the 2004 season ranked third in the final Associated Press Top 25, and followed that with a No. 10 ranking in 2005 and a No. 5 spot in the final 2006 AP poll. "Leon has been a fantastic addition to our staff. To be able to get someone with as much experience as Leon has recruiting on the road and knowing the ins and outs of the Northwest was a big advantage for us," Few said. "Plus, he was a great fit for our staff and our team. We didn't miss a beat with him joining our program. He has a high level of enthusiasm and is very positive." Gonzaga is in Rice s tenure, including a school-best 29-4 record in 2002 a record that was matched in 2006 and a No. 6 ranking in the final Associated Press Top 25 poll and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. The Bulldogs received their best-ever seed into the 2004 NCAA Tournament at No. 2. Rice joined the Bulldogs from Yakima Valley College where he served two seasons as an assistant coach and one as co-head coach with the legendary Dean Nicholson, then served as head coach for the campaign. YVC went from worst to first in the first season of the Rice- Nicholson partnership, and in 1999 YVC went 31-2 in capturing its fourth straight Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges (NWAACC) Eastern Region title. The 31 wins were a school record and came four seasons after Rice and Nicholson inherited a program which had gone 3-20 overall during the season. YVC went a perfect 12-0 in the NWAACC in 1999 and Rice earned his second straight Eastern Region Coach of the Year honor. The duo coached YVC to a overall record and 40-8 league record in four seasons. Rice has coached 18 student-athletes who have gone on to play basketball at 4-year schools, including the Bulldogs' Quentin Hall who was a 1999 Gonzaga senior. YVC had six players from the 1999 squad who joined 4-year programs. Few and Rice have known each other for 16 years, the two of them becoming acquainted when Rice was on Don Monson's staff at the University of Oregon and the two worked Monson's camp together. "He's definitely someone you'd want your son to play for. I've always had a tremendous amount of respect for Mark," Rice said. "He has the character and values of someone I'd like to work for." Rice received his B.A. in physical education from Washington State University in 1986 and his M.A. in athletic administration, management and program development from Oregon in After one year of high school coaching, he began his collegiate career as a graduate assistant coach at Oregon in 1989, then served two seasons as a fulltime assistant coach for the Ducks. He was the head assistant coach at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley for three seasons prior to going to YVC. Rice and his wife, Robin, have three sons, Brock ( ), Max (8-2-99) and Kade ( ).

Tommy Lloyd Bulldogs Assistant Coach TOMMY LLOYD ( ), joined head coach Mark Few's staff for the season after serving as an administrative assistant the previous season. A 1993 graduate of Kelso, Wash., High, Lloyd attended Walla Walla Community College for two seasons and graduated from Whitman College in Walla Walla, Wash., in While at WWCC he was an All-Northwest Athletic Association of Community College (NWAACC) All- Easton Region selection in He set the WWCC single-game scoring record with 52 points against Treasure Valley CC. He was also the leading scorer in the NWAACC All-Star game with 22 points his sophomore season. Following graduation from WWCC he finished his career at Whitman College, playing for Gonzaga alum Skip Molitor. He earned a degree in biology and a secondary teaching credential. Lloyd also played two seasons overseas, playing in Brisbane, Australia, in 1997 and Dusseldorf, Germany, in Lloyd s knowledge of the European game has been instrumental in placing Gonzaga players overseas to continue their basketball careers, as well as nurturing his contacts in recruiting circles as Gonzaga s recruiting base has extended worldwide. His main responsibilities at Gonzaga are game preparation, recruiting and player development. He also plays a major role in organizing Gonzaga s basketball camps. Lloyd and his wife Chanelle were married June 14, They have two children Liam ( ) and Sophia Marie ( ). Sophia Marie s birth coincided with the ESPN documentary The Season that chronicled Gonzaga basketball and one segment centered on Tommy and Chanelle at the hospital leading up to the birth and following the birth.

Jerry Krause Director of Men's Basketball Operations JERRY KRAUSE returned for his second stint with Gonzaga University's men's basketball program in the summer of 2001, this time as Director of Men's Basketball Operations. His first stint with the Bulldogs was an 8-season run from when he served as a part-time assistant coach. He returned in the summer of 2001 from a 5-year civilian term at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point where he was a professor of sport philosophy and director of instruction for the department of physical education. Krause is no stranger to basketball in the Inland Pacific Northwest. He had a 17-year career as head coach at Eastern Washington University. During that span, Eagle teams posted a record for a.572 winning percentage. He took a sabbatical from EWU to assist the late Ralph Miller at Oregon State University from , then returned to EWU to lead the Eagles from the NAIA and into the NCAA Division I ranks. He was inducted into the EWU Athletic Hall of Fame on Oct. 1, Prior to becoming head coach at EWU, Krause had been an assistant at Northern Colorado for three years, and also had stints at Loveland, Colo., High and Adair-Casey Community High in Iowa. Krause was a long-standing member of the NCAA Rules Committee, was on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Basketball Coaches and served on the Selection Committee of the National Basketball Hall of Fame. He still serves as Research Chair of the NABC. He is also a member of the NAIA Basketball Coaches and National Association for Sports and Physical Education Halls of Fame. He received his bachelor's degree from Wayne State University in He received his master's degree in 1965 and his doctorate degree in 1967, both from Northern Colorado. In 2001 he was honored by UNC with an Alumni Achievement award for Contribution to Sport. The award is for alumni who have excelled in mentorship or role modeling while working with students in sports. The NABC also honored him at the 2003 Final Four with its Guardians of the Game for Advocacy award for his research in developing a standardized rim testing program. Krause has authored more than 30 books on coaching basketball, produced 31 instructional videos, six DVD s, two CD s and serves as a consultant to many athletic organizations. He is the most widely published coach in basketball history, surpassing the legendary Clair Bee. Among his duties at Gonzaga are to oversee the day-to-day operations of the men's basketball office, scheduling, coordinating on-campus recruiting, player evaluations and video operations.

Jennifer Nyland Bulldogs Basketball Trainer JENNIFER NYLAND is in her eighth year as part of Gonzaga University s sports medicine staff, but she is in her third season as the lead trainer for the men s basketball team. Gonzaga head trainer Steve DeLong relinquished the role for the season after 25 years to devote more time to other aspects of the Bulldogs sports medicine operation. Nyland joined the Bulldogs from the Community Colleges of Spokane in August, The 1998 graduate of Washington State University has been the primary trainer for Gonzaga s women s volleyball and rowing teams, as well as assisting with the overall operation of Gonzaga s staff of four fulltime sports medicine specialists. At CCS she provided treatment and medical coverage for the men s and women s soccer teams; men s basketball; men s and women s track and field, and the Sasquatch men s and women s tennis teams. She also supervised and assisted in the clinical education of student athletic trainers. While a student at WSU, Nyland was a student athletic trainer with primary sport responsibilities including men s basketball; men s and women s track and field, and spring football. She also accompanied the WSU sports medicine team to the 1998 Rose Bowl. During her three years as a student trainer she also assisted with a variety of other sports. He background included weight training, where she served as an instructor as CCS, and fast fitness, supervising the CCS fitness center and providing instruction on the appropriate use of equipment. She is certified by the National Athletic Trainers Association and the Washington State Trainers Association. Nyland is also certified in Adult CPR and Standard First Aid by the American Red Cross.

Bulldogs Outlook New Offensive Punch Zags Must Replace Morrison, Batista Points Never has Gonzaga University had the Mr. Inside, Mr. Outside punch on offense the Bulldogs had in 2006 with consensus All-American Adam Morrison and the Brazilian Beast in J.P. Batista. Morrison became the second Gonzaga player in school history to lead the NCAA Division I ranks in scoring with his 28.1 ppg, while Batista kept opposing defenses honest down low with his deadly hook shot and deceivingly accurate jumper while averaging 19.1 ppg. Morrison became the second player in program history to leave after his junior season and declare for the NBA Draft, going as the No. 3 pick, while Batista looks to take his game to the next level after two of the most solid years turned in by a JC transfer. But does that mean Gonzaga head coach Mark Few is throwing in the towel on the season? Far from it. I ve always said that is one of the challenges of coaching at the collegiate level, Few said. Players come and go and each team must take on a personality of its own. Last year s team belonged to Adam and J.P. We ll just have to wait and see who emerges this season. Does Few believe he ll have two players with the offensive numbers Morrison and Batista posted last season? I don t think you ever go into a season expecting two guys to do what those two accomplished, Few said. It was certainly a season to cherish. What Few and the Bulldogs cherished was a 29-4 record, a No. 5 ranking in the final Associated Press Top 25, a No. 10 slot in the final ESPN/USA Today poll, a third seed into the NCAA Tournament, an eighth straight trip to the NCAA festivities and a fourth Sweet Sixteen appearance since But who will be called upon to bolster an offense that loses 47.3 ppg of the 80.1 ppg the Bulldogs averaged last season? One guy who will be looked to is senior point guard Derek Raivio. He averaged 11.1 ppg last season, slightly down from his 13.0 ppg as a sophomore in But the Vancouver, Wash., native never really returned to form after suffering a back bruise at the University of Washington in the sixth game of the season that sent him to the sidelines for the next two games. He averaged 7.1 ppg in West Coast Conference play, less than half of the 15.7 ppg he put up as a sophomore. Obviously, Derek never returned to form after the injury, although he did have a couple of flashes of brilliance where we thought he was going to turn the corner. But while his offensive numbers were down, he was still a leader and got the ball into the hands of the right people and continued to do a solid job of running the offense. We need his offense to return this season to what he showed as a sophomore and for the rest of his game to continue to improve and take another jump, Few said. Raivio averaged 2.8 assists per game last year, at first glance numbers that would appear to be sub-par. But his 1.89 assist-to-turnover ratio would dispute that, as would the supporting cast the Bulldogs had on what was an excellent passing team. Junior Pierre Marie Altidor- Cespedes returns after making great strides last season. His offense doubled from 2.0 to 4.2 ppg as he continued to look to the basket much more than he did as a

freshman when the coaching staff was constantly urging him to take the open shot, and he averaged 2.6 assists. His biggest shot last season was a 3-pointer from the right corner at the buzzer for a home win over the University of San Francisco. You wouldn t think a staff would be ecstatic with 4.2 points-per-game from a player, Few said. But we think Pierre made great strides offensively last season and we look for him to have even a bigger role in the offense this season. Also out front the Bulldogs return sophomore guard Jeremy Pargo who averaged 17.1 minutes/game 2.0 assists as a true freshman and who the coaches believe has a great up side. Sure, Jeremy looked like a freshman at times last year, but he really learned the system and got better as the season went along. We weren t looking for him to score last year, that wasn t his role. But we look for him to be more of an option this year. He will continue to improve and grow and become a vital part of this team, Few said. Underneath the Bulldogs return some tested veterans, although they played in the shadow of Batista last season and Ronny Turiaf and Batista the previous year. Sean Mallon, a 6-9 senior forward from Spokane, averaged 6.8 ppg and 4.5 rpg last season while starting 32 of 33 games, the lone nonstart at home on Senior Night. He is a career 53.8 percent shooter from the field, and his 50.6 percent last season joined Batista (58.9 percent) as the only Bulldogs Final 2006 West Coast Conference Standings Conference Overall W L Pct. We think Sean will be one of those players who really puts together an outstanding senior season, Few said. He s been a solid player for us since his first game as a freshman in Madison Square Garden. I think Sean was as much a key to our success last year as anybody on the team. He knew his role, accepted it and performed it every night. Junior David Pendergraft, who might best be described as the blue collar workhorse of the Bulldogs, averaged 17.8 minutes/game off the bench while appearing in all 33 games last season. He s better than a 50.0 percent career shooter from the field in his two years, but more importantly last season averaged 4.0 rpg for fourth on the team. David grabbed a lot of big rebounds for us last season, Few said. We think his offense will also continue to develop to complement the other phases of his game. Two other freshmen saw plenty of minutes for the Bulldogs last season. Redshirt freshman Josh Heytvelt returns for what he hopes will be an injury-free season in 2007, and true freshman Larry Gurganious looks to add to his resume his sophomore campaign after appearing in 31 of 33 games off the bench last season. Heytvelt, who missed most of fall camp while battling a pre-cursor to a stress fracture that forced him to miss two exhibition games and the season opener, was just coming into his own when suffering a broken left ankle in just his third game against the University of Connecticut on Nov. 23 in the title game of the EA Sports Maui Invitational. He had 9 points and 4 rebounds against UConn prior to the injury, and came back to see action Feb. 11 against Stanford University. Gurganious was called on early to see action when senior Erroll Knight missed the first eight games of the season with a nagging knee injury, and was even pressed into further action when Heytvelt was sidelined. I can t say enough about what those two players accomplished last season, Few said. For Larry to step in like he did to help solve our depth problem, and for Josh to work so hard to get back into game shape so soon after the injury spoke highly for both of

them. We re looking for big years from both of them. They are two of the best athletes on this team, along with Jeremy. While Few and his staff molded several newcomers into the mix last season, they ll be called upon to groom several more newcomers for action this season. Freshmen Matt Bouldin and Will Foster will be joined by JC transfer Abdullahi Kuso; 4-year transfers Micah Downs and David Burgess, and redshirts Andrew Sorenson and Jordan Mast. Bouldin, a 6-5 guard, averaged 25.4 ppg for ThunderRidge High in Highlands Ranch, Colo., outside of Denver. ThunderRidge advanced to the Sweet 16 of the Colorado State 5A Tournament after being State 5A runners-up the previous two seasons. Bouldin played on the State 5A title team in He s also a Gatorade State Player of the Year selection, and was also a second-team All-Continental League pick in baseball this past spring. Foster is 7-3 who blossomed his senior campaign. After averaging in single-digit numbers as a junior at White River High, Foster averaged 17.5 ppg and 14 rpg this past season. Kuso is a 6-9, 220-pound forward who comes o the Bulldogs from Tallahassee, Fla., Community College. The native of Kaduna, Nigeria, averaged 13.4 ppg, 8.3 rpg and 1.8 blocks/game as TCC finished second in the National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament. I think those three have a bright future in this program. Each elevated his game this past season, and all three are going to contribute at this level, Few said of his three latest letter-of-intent signees. Downs, a 6-8 guard who was a McDonald s High School All-American, came off the bench in 13 of the first 16 games for the University of Kansas last season, averaging 11.7 minutes/game, 4.3 ppg, 2.2 rpg and 1.0 assists prior to transferring to Gonzaga at the semester. Downs had to sit out the second semester last spring and won t be eligible to play until first-semester finals are completed this December. Burgess, a 6-10 center, was another mid-season transfer, coming to the Bulldogs from Brigham Young University. He received a medial redshirt for the 2005 season after having ankle surgery and appearing in just two games for the Cougars. Last season he played in three of the first seven games prior to deciding to transfer to Gonzaga. Like Downs, he won t become eligible until the conclusion of finals in December. These are two players with a great upside. Downs was one of the most highly recruited players in the country two years ago, and Burgess is a rugged inside player who can also play away from the basket. We recruited both of them out of high school and are glad to get them now, Few said. Sorenson and Mast will vie for playing time. Sorenson is a 6-3 guard from Olympia, Wash. He tried out for the team in open tryouts prior to the season and was not retained, but earned a walk-on spot prior to the 2006 season. Mast is a 6-4 guard from Portland, Ore., another in a long line of Jesuit High products to attend Gonzaga. Andrew and Jordan are young, but we believe they will find a role on this team, Few said. I think we ve found out with the injuries we ve had the past couple of seasons that you can never have too much depth. You never know when your time will come. While the offensive holes to fill are obvious, the Bulldogs will also look for sometime to pick up the defensive void created by the graduation of Erroll Knight. The WCC Defender of the Year as a junior, Knight s senior campaign was again injuryriddled as he missed the first eight games of the season with a nagging knee injury. He never fully recovered from two arthroscopic surgeries performed in November, but did return to give the Bulldogs a proven defensive stopper. We don t know who will assume that role, although at times last year Larry (Gurganious) looked like he might be the man, Few said. He has much the same quickness and anticipation Erroll had. We ll just have to tweak his defensive skills a little bit and he ll be one of the top defenders in the WCC. The 2007 Bulldogs will indeed take on a new personality in their bid for a ninth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament. It s a challenge Few and his staff eagerly await.
