Kickoff is set for noon (CT). Sunday s game features two evenly matched defenses that are both ranked in the top 10 in several areas, including total defense (Vikings 7th, Titans 3rd), rushing defense (Vikings 3rd, Titans 10th), opponents fi rst downs (Vikings T-5th, Tennessee T-2nd), and opponents points (Vikings 8th, Titans 1st). This will be the 10th matchup between the Vikings and the Titans, with Minnesota holding the overall series lead 7-3. The last time the two teams met in Nashville was on December 26, 1998, as Minnesota defeated Tennessee in Tennessee s fi nal game as the Oilers. Childress squad features strong play along both lines, a dynamic running game and an opportunistic defense. A bevy of top-fl ight linemen have been important to developing the identity of the Vikings and are now being complimented by emerging playmakers. The offseason addition of 2007 NFL sack leader and All-Pro DE Jared Allen via trade with Kansas City along with free agent starters WR Bernard Berrian, FB Thomas Tapeh, and S Madieu Williams fi lled key positions with veteran playmakers. With Allen, the Vikings now have 5 Pro Bowlers along the offensive and defensive lines and 7 members of the 2007 Pro Bowl squad. Coupled with a pair of proven 1,000-yard runners in the backfi eld and an aggressive defense with a nose for the ball, the Vikings enter 2008 with a strong nucleus of experienced talent. Since taking over the team in 2006, Childress has placed a premium on playing smart football, minimizing mistakes and winning the line of scrimmage. The 2007 Vikings became the 1st team in franchise history to rank #1 in the NFL in rushing offense and rushing defense. The duos of G Steve Hutchinson and C Matt Birk on offense joined by DTs Kevin Williams and Pat Williams on defense all made second consecutive Pro Bowl trips in The Vikings offense set franchise records by rushing for 2,634 yards (164.6 yards per game) with rookie phenom Adrian Peterson leading the way with an NFC-best 1,341 yards. Peterson s total ranked as the 2nd-highest in team history, and his 5.6 yards-per-carry average ranked 2nd-best in the NFL. Fellow RB Chester Taylor, coming off his fi rst 1,000-yard rushing season in 2006, fi nished with 844 yards and 7 TDs on 157 carries. Together Peterson and Taylor accounted for 2,185 of the team s rushing total, giving the Vikings the most dangerous rushing tandem in team history in terms of yardage. Second-year QB Tarvaris Jackson showed signifi cant improvement from year one as he threw for 1,911 yards and 9 TDs while rushing for 260 yards and 3 scores despite missing 4 games due to injury. He fi nished the season 8-4 as a starter. Defensively, the Williams tandem shut down the run better than anyone in the NFL, and the Vikings posted the #1 rush defense for the 2nd straight year. Over the past 2 seasons, the team has stifl ed opponents by allowing 67.9 yards per game, 2.9 yards per carry and 0.5 rushing TDs per game in those 32 games. Behind the rugged DTs, the Vikings have an emerging trio of linebackers who have a knack for the big play and ball-hawking defensive backs. The 2007 squad tied a francise record by scoring 6 TDs on interception returns and 2 more on fumble returns. The Vikings 13 defensive TDs (9 INTs, 4 FRs) since 2006 lead the NFL and are 5 more than the runner-up Packers 8. On special teams, the Vikings ranked 4th in the NFL with a 24.8 kickoff return average and 6th in the NFL as they held opponents to an average starting fi eld position just beyond the 26-yard line (26.2). Fisher holds the franchise record for wins by a head coach with 123 and is the NFL leader in tenure with one team among active coaches. Over the past nine seasons ( ), Fisher has guided the Titans to fi ve playoff appearances. Only fi ve teams have more appearances during that time. Fisher has also led Tennessee to two division titles (2000, 2002), two AFC Championship games (1999, 2002) and one Super Bowl berth (XXXIV). LAST WEEK The Minnesota Vikings scored 20 unanswered points spanning the fi nal three quarters Sunday at the Metrodome to defeat the previously undefeated Carolina Panthers and notch Minnesota s fi rst victory of the 2008 season. Vikings Offense Veteran QB Gus Frerotte started his third career game for the Vikings and his fi rst since his last stint with the team in After throwing an early interception Frerotte shook off the rust and went on to have a solid day in the pocket, completing 16 of 28 attempts for 204 yards and a TD. Frerotte s day was highlighted by his 34-yard touchdown strike to TE Visanthe Shiancoe and a 48-yard bomb down the sideline to WR Bernard Berrian, which set up the score. Berrian led all receivers in the game with 79 yards on three catches. Despite playing through a sore hamstring RB Adrian Peterson still averaged 4.5 yards per carry, rushing the football 17 times for 77 yards. Those 77 yards allowed Peterson to set a new team record for most yards rushed through the fi rst three games of a season with 340 currently good for second in the NFL as well. Vikings Defense The Vikings defense turned in an impressive performance, limiting the Panthers to only 204 yards on the day, 47 on the ground and 18 yards that came after the Vikings had given the ball back to the Panthers after four kneel-downs in the fi nal seconds of the game. Vikings defenders had a big day fi lling out the stat sheet. Notably the Vikings pass rushers got to Panthers QB Jake Delhomme fi ve times during the afternoon, causing two forced fumbles. LB Chad Greenway and CB Antoine Winfield both notched their fi rst sacks of the season while DT Kevin Williams recorded his fi rst two sacks and DE Jared Allen picked up his second. LB E.J. Henderson led the team in tackles with 15 total stops (13 solo). The turning point of the game was Winfi eld s takedown. Winfi eld knocked the ball loose, scooped it up and retuned it 19 yards for a touchdown to tie the game right before halftime. It was only the third time in Vikings history that a player had recorded four stats on one play (sack, FF, FR, TD). The Vikings defense now ranks third in the NFL in rush yards allowed per game (70.3), seventh in total yards allowed per game (280.7), and 8th in points allowed per game (17.3). Vikings Special Teams K Ryan Longwell connected on both his fi eld goal attempts (28 and 32), RB Chester Taylor returned two kicks for 44 yards, and P Chris Kluwe placed two kicks inside the Panthers 20 yard-line and recorded a 55-yard punt. They re a good football team, number one. We knew we were coming in for a fi ght. We look at tape. We don t look at records and we knew it was going to be a tough game. We didn t play well enough for us to win in their place. Panthers Quarterback Jake Delhomme On the last time he was beat up like he was against Minnesota... I really can t tell you. Maybe Chicago a few years back in November when we played them. But they are a very good football team. If you couldn t see that by watching fi lm this week, then you are blind. I don t have any idea how they are a 1-2 football team. 6 VIKINGS TEAM NOTES VIKINGS COORDINATORS Offensive Coordinator Darrell Bevell Offensive Coordinator Darrell Bevell enters his 3rd season with the Vikings with 2 Pro Bowlers along the offensive line, the 2007 NFC-leading rusher in the backfi eld, a more experienced quarterback and a new playmaking wide receiver. In 2007, Bevell helped put together the best rushing attack in the NFL as the Vikings averaged yards per game and 5.3 yards per carry. Their 2,634 rushing yards was the highest total in team history while their 22 rushing touchdowns ranked tied for 2nd. The Vikings were led by the rushing tandem of rookie RB Adrian Peterson and RB Chester Taylor, who amassed a combined 2,185 yards on the ground, shattering Daunte Culpepper and Robert Smith s previous highest rushing total by a tandem of 1,991 yards in Against San Diego, Peterson broke the NFL single-game rushing record when he gained 296 yards on the ground. Peterson, along with C Matt Birk, G Steve Hutchinson, and FB Tony Richardson earned trips to the 2008 Pro Bowl. This offseason, Bevell s offense saw the addition of deep threat WR Bernard Berrian, FB Thomas Tapeh and RB Maurice Hicks. Asst. Head Coach/Def. Coord. Leslie Frazier On the defensive side of the ball, Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator Leslie Frazier will begin his 2nd season with the Vikings and his 9th season in the NFL. In his fi rst year with Minnesota, Frazier led the team to its 2nd-consecutive #1 ranking against the run, holding opponents to 74.1 yards per game on the ground. The team notched 8 defensive touchdowns and led the league with 6 interceptions returned for scores. The Vikings tied for 9th with 31 takeaways and tied a team record for the most defensive points scored in a season with 50 (8 touchdowns, 1 safety). Prior to joining the Vikings, Frazier won a Super Bowl in 2006 as a member of the Indianapolis Colts staff, coaching defensive backs and serving as a special assistant to Tony Dungy. During that championship season, the Colts defense posted 13 takeaways in the playoffs and allowed only 2 second-half TDs in the 4 postseason games. During the 2008 offseason, Frazier saw his unit add key pieces at defensive end with the trade for Jared Allen, who led the NFL with 15.5 sacks in 2007, and at safety with the signing of free agent Madieu Williams. Frazier now has 3 Pro Bowlers along the defensive line and 4 members of the 2007 Pro Bowl squad. Special Teams Coordinator Paul Ferraro The 2008 season marks Paul Ferraro s 3rd as the Vikings Special Teams Coordinator, his 4th season of NFL coaching and his 27th season of coaching overall. Ferraro s 2007 special teams units, the core of which have returned in 2008, were some of the most successful in team history. The 2007 squad set team records for kickoff return average, the longest kickoff return in team history, the most punts landed inside the 20, and the most 50+ yard punts. The team also converted a pair of onside kicks. Leading the way on special teams in 2007 was LB Heath Farwell, who topped the team in special teams tackles for the 2nd straight season, was voted by his teammates as the Special Teams MVP and was recognized as a Pro Bowl alternate. The Vikings ranked 4th overall in the NFL with a 24.8 kickoff return average, which also ranked as the highest return average in team history, and 6th in the NFL as they held opponents to an average starting fi eld position just beyond the 26-yard line (26.2). WR Aundrae Allison ranked #1 in the NFC and #3 in the NFL with an average of 28.7 yards per kickoff return, while Kluwe shattered his record of 28 punts inside the 20, as he landed 34. We don t just talk about turnovers on defense. We talk about turnovers and scoring with the football. That s why when you guys do watch practice, you see them taking it all the way to the end zone. It s just a mindset. They believe that they re going to do that, and they feel bad when they don t score on defense. That s a good feeling as a coach, knowing the defense is going out there with an offensive mentality. Facing Tennessee... Tennessee is very tough. It s a noisy stadium. They have a veteran quarterback, obviously. They have a (heck) of a defensive line, I do know that. They can run the football. Usually that s a pretty good mix. We ll have our hands full going down there against the AFC South this week. PRACTICE SQUAD MAKES PERFECT The Vikings have several players on the 53-man roster who have climbed the NFL ladder, starting their careers as practice squad players. Vikings starting RG Anthony Herrera was a practice squad player as a rookie in Vikings CB Charles Gordon and LB David Herron began their careers as practice squad members with the club and moved into regular roles with the team. Together the two accounted for 2,185 yards on the ground in 2007, which surpassed Robert Smith and Daunte Culpepper s 1,991 combined rushing yards in Peterson and Taylor also fi nished #2 and #3 in the league with rushing averages of 5.6 and 5.4 yards-per-carry respectively. Birk, who has played in 133 career games with 110 starts since being drafted by the Vikings in 1998, has played in six Pro Bowls ( ), which is tied with Mick Tinglehoff for the most by a Vikings center. He has paved the way for some of the best rushing performances in Vikings history, having been a fi xture in the lineup for four of the Vikings top fi ve single-season performances during his seven seasons as a full-time starter. He has also helped set the top three team rushing marks. Hutchinson joined the Vikings in 2006 and helped the team lead the NFL in rushing yards in 2007 with 2,634. He caught the longest pass by a Vikings TE in team history, a 79-yarder on a reverse by WR Sidney Rice. Kleinsasser added four catches for 43 yards and currently ranks 5th in Vikings annals for career catches by a TE with 159. Mills joined the Vikings on September 2, 2007, after his release in fi nal roster cuts by New England. He was inactive for the opening 15 games of the season before dressing in the fi nale at Denver. In that game, he caught two passes for 26 yards, including a long of 18. ENDS MAKE PLAYS Currently Vikings tight ends Visanthe Shiancoe and Garrett Mills have combined for 10 catches, 141 receiving yards and one touchdown through the fi rst three games. VIKINGS WIDE RECEIVERS In 2008 the Vikings receiving core will benefi t from the addition of big-play WR Bernard Berrian, who was acquired as a free agent from Chicago this past offseason. 13 VIKINGS DEFENSIVE TEAM NOTES VIKINGS DEFENSIVE LINE The Vikings defensive line contains three Pro Bowlers in defensive tackles Kevin Williams and Pat Williams and newcomer DE Jared Allen. Together Kevin and Pat, along with defensive ends Ray Edwards and Kenechi Udeze and now Allen (on reserve/non-football illness list in 2008), have formed the toughest defensive line in the NFL against the run for the past two-plus years. In 2007, the team allowed an average of 74.1 yards per game on the ground, and only three teams - Dallas, Washington and Denver - gained 100 yards rushing, while the longest individual rush was for 30 yards. The previous season the Vikings allowed just 985 rushing yards (61.6 per game), which ranked 2nd since the 1969 AFL-NFL merger to only the 2000 Baltimore Ravens, who gave up only 970 rushing yards during their Super Bowl Championship season. Kevin has played in three Pro Bowls while Pat has played in the past two. In one of the biggest 2008 offseason moves in the NFL, Allen joined the Vikings via a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs. Having led the NFL in sacks with 15.5 in 2007 despite missing two games, Allen earned his fi rst Pro Bowl and All-Pro Honors that season. Allen notched his fi rst sack as a Viking in Week 2 vs. Indianapolis when he caught QB Peyton Manning for a 5-yard loss. It was Allen s first sack of Manning. Henderson also has recorded 8.5 of his 10.5 sacks over the past two seasons as well as scoring his lone career touchdown on a 45-yard interception return in Flanking Henderson are Ben Leber and Chad Greenway. Leber, a seven year veteran out of Kansas State, was acquired by the Vikings from San Diego in He has three-times been a starter on the NFL s number-one rated rush defense with San Diego in 2005 and Minnesota in 2006 and Greenway starts his second season at linebacker after missing all of his rookie season with a knee injury. Greenway was a fi rst round selection (17th overall) of the Vikings in 2006 after an impressive college campaign where he was named an All-American his senior year. In his fi rst year starting for the Vikings in 2007 Greenway showed his playmaking abilities as he led the team in takeaways with 6 (4 FR, 2 INT) and was second on the team with 130 tackles. His four fumble recoveries tied him for the NFL lead. Green way also returned an interception for a touchdown off of eventual Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning. MAN IN THE MIDDLE Currently Vikings captain LB E.J. Henderson leads the team with 31 tackles (25 solo). He also has one of the team s 7.0 sacks. Over the past four years ( ) Henderson has led the team in tackles three times. In 2004 he led the squad with 125 stops. In 2006 his 142 tackles led the Vikings and last year his 155 stops were a career--high and led the team. He was named the team s 2007 defensive MVP for his performance. VIKINGS DEFENSIVE BACKS The Vikings return three of four starters in the secondary for 2008 with CB Cedric Griffin, S Darren Sharper, and CB Antoine Winfield. Sharper, the 12-year veteran, is the leader in the secondary and the owner of several impressive numbers. The four-time Pro Bowl starter has 53 career interceptions (17 with the Vikings), the most by any active player in the NFL. He also is tied for fi fth in NFL history with eight career interception return touchdowns. Winfi eld, another veteran, has played nine seasons in the NFL. A fi rst round pick (23rd overall) by Buffalo in the 1999 NFL draft, Winfi eld has gone on to record 763 career tackles and 18 interceptions prior to the 08 season. Winfi eld is still playing some of his best football, notching touchdowns off of interceptions in each of the last two seasons. The former University of Texas star Griffi n enters his third year with Vikings after being drafted by the team in the second round of the 2006 NFL Draft. Griffi n scored the fi rst touchdown of his NFL career last year in Dallas when he received a lateral from teammate LB Ben Leber off of a fumble and took it 28 yards for a score. Joining the three starters is 2008 free agent pickup S Madieu Williams. Williams adds another veteran body in the defensive backfi eld having been a three-year starter (missed his sophomore season due to injury) for Cincinnati. With Williams sidelined for the fi rst few games with a neck injury, however, the Vikings fi rst selection in the 2008 NFL Draft (2nd round, 43rd overall) S Tyrell Johnson will gain some important and meaningful reps at the safety position. JOSEPH S HOME FOR CHILDREN On Tuesday, September 23, longtime St. Joseph s Home for Children supporter, Tarvaris Jackson, along with teammates Robert Ferguson, Charles Gordon, Chris Kluwe, John Sullivan, and Albert Young, held an American Heart Association What Moves U assembly at Catholic Charities St. Joseph s Home for Children. Approximately 65 youth from St. Joe s were led through a series of drills designed to teach the basics of football. Players delivered a positive message to the children about the importance of perseverance and teamwork as well as stressed the importance of being active. The event s focus on activity also fi t perfectly with the Vikings commitment to health and fi tness and our support of Nickelodeon s World Wide Day of Play, which will take place on Saturday, September 27. The Vikings are one of the few NFL franchises without a stadium solution but remain determined to collaborate with the State Legislature, the Governor and local leaders to resolve this issue. With the team s Metrodome lease set to expire in 2011 and costs increasing $50 million with each year of delay, 2009 is the critical year to preserve the long-term viability of the Vikings in Minnesota. A Winter Garden light rail train station that will serve as a connecting point for the future Central Corridor light rail line and the existing Hiawatha line. 23 FROM THE HEAD COACH MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, 2008 Head Coach Brad Childress On the injury front we ll know more about (Vinny) Ciurciu when he gets done with his MRI. We don t have any results back yet. Just a couple of notes to finish up on yesterday, I thought defensively they played hard all the way through. I thought they were very good in their sudden-change defense, obviously with our turnover there around the midfield stripe. They did not allow points. They scored with one of their turnovers. We talk about those touchdowns on defense. A negative would have been that long drive and that questionable interference call. There was a lot of good and a lot of stuff to build off of there. We were physical versus the defense. We got pressure on that passer and got a number of quarterback hits. That makes it tough on the quarterback. Offensively I saw some decent signs with mixing the run and the pass together. I was not happy with the six penalties that we had, those holds, and particularly those ones we had in the red zone. Holds are going to happen, but the red-zone one was hard to take. We took a touchdown off of the board, and we took explosive plays off of the board. That one with Ryan Cook we had, I think, a 13 or 14-yard run out the other end of that. I think that we obviously have to take a look at that and some of those holds. Some of those I agree with and some of those I don t agree with at the back side of those plays, but nonetheless those were called. One special teams penalty, I ll have to talk to the director about that, but I thought Charles Gordon made a great play of shoving the guy out of bounds. The guy threw a flag from 50 yards away and said he hit him out of bounds. It wasn t like the guy traveled 30 yards and then he was hit out of bounds, he was shoved out of bounds at the very beginning of the play. I thought it was a good play by Chuck. That cost us some yardage there. Field position-wise we would have been around the 45-yard line or so with (Aundrae) Allison s return. Instead, he goes back and gets penalized from the point where he caught the football. (There are) a lot of things to clean up, but all in all it s good to get your first win. You ve got to get one before you can get two. Q: Did Gus Frerotte meet expectations and then some for you? A: I think that he gave some life to the passing game. I thought he did a nice job of sliding up in the pocket and getting (Bernard) Berrian on that 48-yarder on third down. He gave us some plays in the passing game and made a lot of the routine plays. Q: Was it the same type of game plan you would have gone with if Tarvaris Jackson was playing or did it have to be changed? A: It is (the same) simply for the fact that you have to attack the defense that you re seeing. You have to call plays that you believe will attack that defense. We still managed to roll him and boot him a couple of different times. Garrett (Mills) had a hole and Gus could have helped us getting outside of that a little bit more because Garrett was blocked for a specifi c point. He ll just become more and more familiar with that. Q: Is E.J. Henderson playing even better than you expected? A: We had him for 13 (solo) tackles yesterday and I think he is continuing to play at a high, high level. He had a quarterback sack, a quarterback hit and he s just all around the football. That s the E.J. Henderson that I ve seen since he s been a Mike linebacker. Q: Did you get even better pressure on the quarterback than you had hoped for? A: (Jared Allen) draws attention, whether it s chip help or the extra person looking toward him. Obviously that gets guys single opportunities, a guy like Kevin Williams inside or Ray Edwards coming from the other side. They can t do it all of the time, and it s the same thing for us. We had a plan for (Julius) Peppers and there are times when you don t. Sometimes they get to you and sometimes they don t get to you. Q: Was the pressure primarily from the front four? A: I think it was a good mix. I think the coordinators all did a good job yesterday. There was a good mix of blitz with coverage at different times than you maybe would expect. I thought they did a nice job of moving the plays around as well. Q: How does Adrian Peterson feel today? A: (He s) no sorer than he was before the game yesterday. He had, I think, 41 snaps and only 17 carries. He s doing just fi ne. I think, kind of a Litmus (test) for me was when he was done working out I asked if he could return the opening kickoff. He said, Yeah I can go. I can do that. We didn t want him to return the opening kickoff, but he couldn t return the last kickoff last week. That would be a pretty good starting spot. Q: Is that a type of injury that just lingers on until the bye week or is that something that can be treated? A: There s so much you can do with different treatments right now and he s doing all of it. He takes things home with him; he treats here and he s as aggressive as he can be with it. It will be something that passes. In a perfect world he s going to continue to practice because all of those guys need to take a look and see the different things we re doing in the game plan during the week. Q: What do you like about Naufahu Tahi? A: He ll put his hat on you. They kid him about having a gigantic head. He ll put his hat on you along with that head, (also) his body and legs. He does a nice job of lead blocking, zone blocking and catching the football as well. He s also able to stand back there and take a good look at the zone as a deep-dot tailback. Q: You had some holding calls in the red zone. Has it really been just one issue keeping you guys from converting there? A: It s really not (one issue). I thought Matt (Birk) had a decent block, (one that) we throw (block) on those screens down the fi eld. You saw Ryan Cook had a nice throw on the cut block on Garrett Mill s screen down the fi eld. Matt was starting to throw and tangled up, but you want him tangled up. That s why you throw; you gain the length of your body when you throw on a screen. I think the umpire turned around and got him for a hold. (There was a) devastating block by Adrian Peterson on that play. He came back and walloped somebody for Chester Taylor to get in the end zone. So tough, A, to get one in the red zone, tough, B, to get a touchdown called back. Q: Are you more relaxed this week after the win? A: More relaxed? Yeah, you have to get one before you get two. I don t know if relaxed would be the word. We are playing a team that is 3-0 this week, so (there is) nothing relaxing about that. WEEK 3 -- PANTHERS AT VIKINGS -- 22

24 FROM THE HEAD COACH Q: Is it strange to you that the quarterback matchup this week is two much older guys in Gus Frerotte and Kerry Collins and does that speak to anything? A: Maybe the Tortoise and the Hare thing, something like that. No, just two savvy veterans that have weathered a lot of storms. I don t think you can put a premium on experience. Obviously Kerry Collins has seen it everywhere from Carolina to the Giants and places in between. Q: How much did your time of possession help keep your defense fresh in that game? A: Well it really does keep them fresh. If you can cut their snaps down, I think we had 71 snaps and they had 50-something snaps, if you can control clock and chew clock there is no downside. Now, you want to chew clock and score points at the end; obviously that s the optimum. It s the best way to be able to exert your will on someone and I think they were huffi ng and puffi ng pretty good there as we were down there at the end of that drive. And by the way on that fi eld goal block, we cut it out. Those guys heard a whistle down on the fi eld, so that s the reason why that happened. Those guys chocked the play down. Q: Do you feel good about the amount of shots you took to Bernard Berrian yesterday? A: We do. And we had some more designed ones in there that he wasn t open on. But yeah, we are looking toward him. But we got plays for all of those guys, whether it s Garrett Mills, we had him dialed up a couple of times. I think Gus missed him once, got pressured once again, and the same thing with Visanthe Shiancoe. Q: Were you trying to get Robert Ferguson more snaps or just trying to rest Berrian more because of that toe? A: It had nothing to do with that toe. If he could go, he could go. So I think he was 47 snaps and maybe Ferg had 20-odd snaps. Ferg is a very good force in the run. He did catch a pass yesterday. You ve got to make sure that you blend that so Ferguson is not your designated run blocker and Berrian is your designated pass catcher, but Ferg commands a physical presence with what he does down fi eld in the run game. Q: Are you apprehensive about your special team s coverage units with Heath Farwell already out and Vinny Ciurciu possibly out? A: Well you don t like to lose good football players; there is no question about that. But there are other guys that have to step up. It s 11 guys covering, not just two guys covering. Those guys obviously have a little extra heartbeat and make a lot of plays, but there are other guys that will be able to fi ll those roles as well. Erin Henderson played yesterday, was up, and gave a decent accounting of himself. (It) could be guys out of the secondary (as well); we cross-train those guys at a lot of different positions and it s just a matter of if you can get up and get in there to make a play. Q: Is there a certain guy you look to step up and be the leader if Vinny is in fact out? A: You just don t crown a guy leader. It s not like they are lined up one through 11. No, there will be another guy at that position but I don t know that we ll put leader on top of his helmet right away. Q: How has Artis Hicks looked so far? A: You know what, I talked to Artis about that right after the game as a matter of fact in the locker room, and he s talking about, Can I get an athlete to block once and a while here out on the edge? And he has another tough one in (Kyle) Vanden Bosch this week so it s not going to slow down to my knowledge. That s a very good defensive front with the little bit that I ve seen of it. So I just expect him to continue to keep competing and he has done a good job of that. Q: How is Ray Edwards? He missed some time and then came back. A: He did. I thought the tackle had his head cocked back pretty good on that rush. As a matter of fact I said something to the referee about that and he was looking at the left tackle before he swung back to the right tackle. I think he is going to be okay. We had him examined this morning. Again, I haven t gotten all the medical reports on him, but he re-entered the game and played a bunch, as well as Otis (Grigsby) came in and gave him some rest. Q: Of all the things that a coach has to keep track of during a game, where do timeouts rank as far as difficulty? A: There are charts. There are people you talk to upstairs. I m going to tell you something about that touchdown that Antoine (Winfi eld) had yesterday. I was right with the back judge. Tell me how much time was left when Antoine hit that guy? A minute and 13 (seconds) and we had three timeouts, if I m not mistaken. We had three and they had one, correct? Okay, so we go to third down and I m hanging right with the guy - standing right next to him within an arm s shot and you can tell him beforehand what your intentions are. If this happens, I m going to get a timeout. (And he ll say), Work with me coach. Just let me know. So as I see the quarterback start to get sacked and obviously going down I can t see the ball fall on the ground. I m 50 yards away; there are linemen standing there. So as that started to happen I tried to jump to the referee to get a timeout and as I look back the ball is running into the end zone. Now that would have been problematic had a whistle blown inadvertently. Whether he could have got it and got it signaled, I don t know, but I was kind of hanging right with him at that point in time. It s something that you got to consider. You re working ahead mentally, do you, don t you? Of course then the ball does swing back to them before the end of the half and they are coming back up the fi eld and we still have three timeouts left. You want to see what their intentions are with running the football and how fast could you get it stopped. If they got a certain point in the downs I would have done that. It turns out that they hit a kind of a seam pass down there and I wanted the clock to get chewed. They use one. I wanted the clock to get chewed. You have to work with it. Q: At the end of your game, when you just knelt in the red zone, was that just to avoid the blocked field goal? A: That s exactly what it is, because I ve been to that movie before where you a re-handing it off to the running back and you thought all is well, and the running back dropped the ball on the ground because somebody is snipping at him and he lost focus and the ball was seated. There is nothing that makes you more sick to your stomach. So you play the odds in that situation because you knew how far (they had to go). My chart was off in that situation because I thought that we would get it down to 24 seconds as opposed to 36 seconds. But the chances of them coming back up and scoring twice with no timeouts are not very good. Q: Does it cross your mind to kick the field goal to save your red zone percentage? A: No, no. I mean that is an unfortunate side note that it goes as a red zone failure, but in the end it goes as a Vikings win. Q: On clock management A: There is really not a chart on, Do I ice the kicker or don t I ice the kicker, that I m aware of...i m usually talking to somebody about that. About the, Do you let them score? What s the scoring combination here? Do you need three points and seven points? Do we need to have the ball back? Are we kicking onsides here? Are we kicking away here? How has the defense been playing? Some of it is goes by feel, Have we been getting them stopped? or, No we better onside it here because, shoot, they have been moving it up and down the fi eld here we are never going to get it back.
