3 Aggie Soccer Overview With a record in 2009, the Utah State soccer team has now won at least 10 matches in each of the last four seasons. The 2010 Aggies squad will bring equal parts of youth and experience. The Aggies return 13 letterwinners and eight starters from last year s team that advanced to the Western Athletic Conference Tournament semifinals. Overall, this is going to be the first time in a couple years where we have a significant group of junior and seniors who have played since they were freshman and sophomores, USU head coach Heather Cairns said. This year, we are going to have a lot more experience in our junior and senior classes, and I am just really excited to see where that takes us. Their on-field experience combined with their leadership experience are going to make it a really exciting season. Notes l After going last season, the Aggies have now won at least 10 matches each of the last four seasons. l For the second-straight season, Utah State was picked to finish first in the Western Athletic Conference Preseason Coaches Poll. l The Aggies are set to play four defending regular-season conference champions: Utah Valley (Great West Conference-West Division), Cal Poly (Big West Conference), BYU (Mountain West Conference) and San Jose State (WAC). l Junior forward Shantel Flanary was as the picked WAC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year in 2010 to add to her already impressive resume. Flanary was the 2009 WAC Offensive Player of the Year and the 2008 Freshman of the Year. What Cairns Said About The Forwards... We have some exciting and marquee names back at the forward position. Lauren Hansen, who has been all-conference, and Shantel Flanary, who has been all-conference for us, are both back. We are really bolstering that group with a lot of freshmen talent, including Mari Miyashiro who was the Hawaii Gatorade Player of the Year Outlook Notes l The midfield has a solid mixture of youth and experience. Junior Stefani Shiozaki started all 22 matches last season for the Aggies, while both Pond and sophomore Allie Maduell saw significant time in l The Aggies welcome two new midfielders in freshman Courtney Cawley and sophomore transfer Ellen Larsen who both look to add depth to the USU midfield. What Cairns Said About The Defenders... Our defense is going to look different than last year. We are going to see some new faces. One returning player defensively is Natalie Norris as a center back. The other returner with a lot of experience is Summer Tillotson. We will have to replace both Lindsey Smart and Sydne Garner. We are really going to supplement it with some new faces. Defenders Despite the loss of four-time all-wac honoree Lindsey Smart and Sydne Garner, the USU backfield will retain some of its experience. Junior Summer Tillotson and sophomore Natalie Norris will lead the Aggie defense in Five newcomers will join the defense, including sophomore transfers Katie Crosland and Julia Flores. Notes l The Aggies will have to replace departing seniors Lindsey Smart and Sydne Garner who both roamed the USU backfield for four years. l The USU defense allowed only 26 goals last season in 21 matches. What Cairns Said About The Goalkeepers... It is exciting to have the consistency of a returner in junior Molli Merrill. Knowing that Molli is a returning starter will give confidence to our defense. Forwards The Aggie offense will once again be led by senior Lauren Hansen and junior Shantel Flanary who scored 16 of USU s 28 goals last season. Utah State will also welcome four newcomers to the USU striking corps. Notes l The Aggies return 25 of their 28 goals scored from last season. The only two goal scorers from last season that don t return are Erin Salmon and Danielle Shorts. l Hansen is 18 points from moving up to second all-time on USU s career points list, passing Brigid Turner s 73 points. She is 22 points from passing the Aggies all-time point scorer Jayme Gordy ( ) who scored 77 in her storied USU career. Last season, Hansen had 15 points off of six goals and three assists. Goalkeepers Junior Molli Merrill will enter her second season as a starter for Utah State providing consistency. The goalkeeper unit will be completed by the three A s, freshman Alison Williams, sophomore Ashlyn Mulford and senior Aleena Shelton. Notes l Starting goalkeeper Molli Merrill was named to the 2009 WAC all-tournament team. l Merrill started 21 matches and brought down 82 saves for a.766 save percentage. She was also responsible for three shutouts. Mulford and Shelton both saw time in the 2009 season. Mulford played in one match, while Shelton saw time in two matches. l USU has six forwards on the roster this season, including the top two scorers from last season. What Cairns Said About the Midfielders... Our midfield is mixed with some veterans that have played a lot of minutes for us throughout their careers, as well as an exciting group of freshmen. Stefani Shiozaki and Heather Pond will be in their fourth year playing in the midfield for us. We also have Chandra Salmon, who is a returning first-team all-conference player for us. Midfielders The Utah State midfield will be one of its most experienced positions this season. Two-time first-team all-wac selection Chandra Salmon is back as a junior defensive midfielder. A pair of seniors, Stefani Shiozaki and Heather Pond, also return. Team (1st place votes) Points 1. 28 Aggie Administration 2010 Utah State Stan Albrecht University President Scott Barnes Athletics Director 28 Stan L. Albrecht was named Utah State University s 15th president and assumed his new position on Feb. 1, At the time of the announcement, Albrecht was serving as executive vice president and provost at Utah State, a position he held since He previously served as its dean of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences from Albrecht s had many successes during his tenure as president. Under his leadership, the university launched a comprehensive fund-raising campaign and has, so far, raised $300 million of its $400 million goal. A significant happening during the past months occurred when the College of Eastern Utah officially became part of the Utah State University system. This historic union increases USU s reach in southeastern Utah from Price to Blanding. This, along with the tremendous growth of our regional campuses in the Uintah Basin, Tooele and Brigham City, assures more Utah students the chance of pursuing a high-quality, higher education. In another historic first, USU now has a strong presence in Park City. As part of the largest private gift in USU s history, the university acquired the Swaner Preserve and EcoCenter. The site consists of a 1,200-acre land trust and a 10,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art facility dedicated to environmental education. This addition advances USU s statewide scientific, education and outreach mission in the Park City area, of one of the state s fastest-growing areas. Exciting happenings continue on the Logan campus as well. Currently under construction are the College of Agriculture building, a USTAR research facility and the Emma Eccles Jones Early Childhood Education and Research Center and the Dolores Doré Eccles Center for Early Care and Education. Prior to his arrival at Utah State, Albrecht served as an administrator and professor at the University of Florida from He also served for 18 years at Brigham Young University ( ), including three years as academic vice president and associate provost. He began his career as an assistant professor of sociology at Utah State University in 1970 through A sociologist, Albrecht has written extensively, including as a co-author of the textbooks Social Psychology and Social Science Research Methods, both published by Prentice-Hall. He has authored numerous scholarly papers on a wide range of topics, including the environment, energy development and rural health. Albrecht received his doctorate from Washington State University in 1970, a master s degree from Washington State University in 1968 and bachelor s degree from Brigham Young University in All three degrees were in sociology. He is a member of the Science Committee for the Minerals Management Service of the U.S. Department of Interior. He has served as a council member of the Society for Human Ecology and as vice president of the Rural Sociological Society. Albrecht is married to Joyce Albrecht, Utah State s Director of Stewardship Programs. Since assuming the duties of Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Utah State University on April 1, 2008, Scott Barnes has worked tirelessly to improve the landscape of Aggie Athletics and has cast a vision that includes progress toward meeting many intercollegiate athletic priorities. And despite the instability within the American economy since his arrival at USU, Barnes list of accomplishments has generated a newfound hope and excitement for Utah State Athletics. During his tenure, Barnes has successfully negotiated several new initiatives and has created a new intercollegiate athletics-funding plan that has generated a 33 percent increase in annual operating revenues since his arrival. Among Barnes many accomplishments thus far at Utah State include a new student-fee referendum that will annually generate $2.1 million for Aggie Athletics. He has also overhauled USU s development operations which led to an increase of over 30 percent in Big Blue Scholarship Fund membership and doubling of major gift fund-raising in his first year. Another priority for Barnes during his first year on the job was improving the overall look of the football program. Plenty of progress has already been made in this area as Barnes conducted a very successful football coaching search that resulted in the hiring of Gary Andersen, and has already raised over $2 million toward a goal of $2.5 million to improve the football program through the creation of a Competitive Excellence Plan that calls for a new scheduling philosophy, increased operational support and further facilities developments. As for facilities, Utah State continues to see constant improvement under Barnes with the completion of the new Jim & Carol Laub Athletics-Academics Complex and the Aggie Sports Hall of Honor in The new state-of-the-art off-court facilities complex within the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum was completed in the fall of 2009 as well. These enhancements include new locker rooms and lounge areas for men s and women s basketball, a new film room for women s basketball and volleyball and a new athletic training room. Along with upgrades to facilities and increased revenue under Barnes, Utah State also flourished athletically during the academic year as it claimed Western Athletic Conference team championships in men s cross country, men s basketball and men s indoor and outdoor track and field. Overall, USU has won nine WAC Championships in the past two years under Barnes. Even more impressive than Utah State s athletic achievements during the past year are its continued successes by its student-athletes in the classroom. Overall, USU s student-athletes traditionally rank among the best in the WAC with an 85 percent graduation success rate and a cumulative 3.11 grade-point average. During the academic year, USU had 194 student-athletes earn academic all-wac honors to lead the league and 157 were recognized at its annual Joe E. and Elma Whitesides Luncheon for earning a 3.2 or better GPA. Utah State has also been recognized nationally under the leadership of Barnes as it was named the most economically efficient athletics department in the nation in June, 2009 following a study done by Texas A&M s Laboratory for the Study of Intercollegiate Athletics. Barnes himself has also garnered national attention as he has served on several NCAA committees including a recent appointment to the NCAA men s basketball committee. Barnes has been an active presenter at NACDA and has taught on the IA Athletic Directors Institute Faculty. Barnes, 48, received his bachelor s degree from California State University, Fresno in 1986, as well as his master s degree in 1993 in physical education with an emphasis in athletic administration. He and his wife, Jody, were both student-athletes at Fresno State, as he was a member of the basketball team, while she was a member of the track team. Barnes was born June 23, 1962 in Spokane, Wash. He and his wife have one daughter, Milanna (14) and one son, Isaac (12) U t a h S t a t e S o c c e r G u i d e

29 Aggie Soccer Western Athletic Conference In its nearly 50 years of existence, the Western Athletic Conference continues to evolve and feature some of the nation s best intercollegiate competition. One thing that remains unchanged is the persistent nature of the nine schools in the WAC to advance their programs to contend at the top levels of the NCAA. The WAC provides its student-athletes the chance to travel to scenic destinations and gain exposure in some of the nation s most diverse markets. In addition, the WAC s student-athletes work to achieve the highest levels of success with the academic support of their respective institutions. The WAC has experienced tremendous success. The WAC has sent a total of 31 teams to bowl games since 2001, including more than half of its teams in 2008 with a record-tying five teams. Boise State has won 102 football games since joining the conference, the most in the nation during that time span ( ). The conference has sent teams to BCS bowl games in three of the last four seasons as Boise State made a repeat appearance with a victory in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl this past year following Hawai i s 2008 Sugar Bowl and Boise State s unforgettable victory in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. In men s basketball, the WAC has sent at least two teams to the NCAA Tournament in 24 of the past 27 seasons. Every current school in the WAC has competed in the NCAA Tournament since In baseball, the WAC has boasted two national champions since 2003 including Fresno State s College World Series victory in In women s sports, Fresno State softball has competed in every NCAA Tournament ever held while Louisiana Tech basketball has played in all but three. In 2009, Hawai i made its fourth trip to the NCAA Volleyball Final Four since Current WAC alums have made their presence felt as well. David Carr (Fresno State) was the first player selected in the 2002 NFL Draft. Cheryl Ford (Louisiana Tech) was named the WNBA Rookie of the Year and helped the Detroit Shock win the league s championship in In 2004, the United States softball team won the Olympic gold medal with former Fresno State players Laura Berg and Lovie Jung. Jeff Weaver (Fresno State) earned the win in the St. Louis Cardinals World Series clinching victory in Quarterback Colt Brennan (Hawai i) finished third in the 2007 Heisman Trophy voting, and in 2008, Natasha Kai (Hawai i) helped the United States to a gold medal in soccer at the Olympics in Beijing. In 2001, the WAC partnered with ESPN for coverage of football and basketball giving the conference national exposure from one of the most respected broadcast entities in the country. An extension was signed in 2008 that guarantees over 300 regular season WAC contests and 45 championship events will be aired on the ESPN networks through the spring of The WAC also officially added WAC.tv in 2006 to give fans streaming internet access to many of its postseason championships including volleyball, soccer, swimming and diving, basketball, gymnastics, softball and baseball. The WAC is the sixth oldest among the nation s 11 Division I-A conferences. Its history traces back to July 27, 1962, when the original six-team league of Arizona, Arizona State, Brigham Young, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming began competition. The first championship was held in November 1962, when Arizona won the men s cross country title and New Mexico followed with the first WAC football title. Arizona finished second in the NCAA College World Series and, less than three years later, Arizona State claimed the league s first NCAA title when the Sun Devils won the College World Series trophy. Fresno State was the last WAC school to earn an NCAA team title when it won the College World Series in Since 1962, several changes have occurred. UTEP and Colorado State became members in September 1967, while Arizona and Arizona State withdrew on June 30, The WAC then added San Diego State (1978), Hawai i (1979) and Air Force (1980). Before 1990, the WAC sponsored championships only in men s sports. However, a merger with the High Country Athletic Conference formed a single conference under one administrative structure, and the athletic year was the first in which both men and women competed under the WAC name. Fresno State was added in 1992, and then in 1996, the women s programs from Air Force and Hawai i along with six new schools (UNLV, Rice, San Jose State, SMU, TCU and Tulsa) came into the WAC. Air Force, Brigham Young, Colorado State, UNLV, New Mexico, San Diego State, Utah and Wyoming withdrew on June 30, Nevada (2000), Boise State (2001) and Louisiana Tech (2001) were added while TCU withdrew following the season. The current membership was established on July 1, 2005, when Idaho, New Mexico State and Utah State joined the WAC after Rice, SMU, UTEP and Tulsa withdrew. The WAC has had just five commissioners in its history. Paul Brechler was named the first leader of the conference and held the position from He was followed by Wiles Hallock ( ), Stan Bates ( ), Dr. Joe Kearney ( ) and Karl Benson (1994-present). Presently, the WAC crowns team and individual champions in 19 sports eight men s and 11 women s. For the men, there are championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. Championships for women are held in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and volleyball. The WAC office has been located in the Denver area since the conference s inception with the exception of a two-year stay in Phoenix from w w w. u t a h s t a t e a g g i e s. c o m 29
