5 Aggie Soccer Overview With a perfect record in Western Athletic Conference play last season, the Utah State soccer team is inching closer and closer to its goal: an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. The Aggies came within seconds of the NCAA Tournament losing last season, 2-1, in double overtime in the WAC Tournament championship match to Fresno State. The 2009 squad looks to build on the success of the 2008 team. This year s team returns 12 letterwinners and seven starters from the team that set a school record with a record last season, the most wins ever for a USU team. Notes l The Aggies seven wins was the first unblemished WAC season since SMU in l Utah State welcomes 11 newcomers this season, including two transfers. The rookies range from nine freshmen to one sophomore and one junior. l The Aggies were picked by the WAC coaches to finish first in the league this season. This year, the WAC increases to a full nine teams as New Mexico State joins the conference, doubling the number of Aggie teams in the WAC. l Senior defender Sydne Porter-Garner, senior midfielder Lindsey Smart and junior forward Lauren Hansen will be captains this year for the Aggies. Forwards Despite losing the firepower of Candice Clark to graduation, the Aggies return a dynamic group of forwards, led by junior Lauren Hansen who is the fourth all-time leading point scorer in USU history with 41. The Aggies return eight of their top 10 goal scorers from last year s team that finished third in the WAC in goals scored with 32. What Cairns Said About The Forwards... We have a lot of firepower back in terms of those three players (Hansen, Erin Salmon and Shantel Flanary), yet they all have a lot of experience. Those players have played every game since they have been here. They are a very experienced front line for us. Notes l The Aggies return 26 of their 32 goals scored from last season. The only two goal scorers from last season that don t return are Clark and Andrea Seledee. l Hansen is 10 points from moving up to third all-time on USU s career points list, passing Amber Tracy s 49 points. Hansen has averaged 20.5 points per season in her first two campaigns. If she sustains this average, she will pass the Aggies all-time point scorer Jayme Gordy ( ) who scored 77 in her storied USU career. l USU has seven forwards on the roster this season, including returning starters, Salmon, Hansen and Flanary. The Aggies had three forwards in the top four in scoring on the team last season Outlook Defenders The Aggies return a strong corps of midfielders for the 2009 season. USU will have to recover from losing Alyssa Lowry and Jessie Malaska. Together the two played 151 matches in four years in the Aggie back. What Cairns Said About The Defenders... Our backline is going to look different than it did last year with the constants being Sydne (Porter-Garner) and Summer (Tillotson). Our defense will look the most different than last year. Notes l Sophomore Chandra Salmon, who was a first-team all-wac selection in 2008, will be moving positions from midfielder to defender in l The Aggies return starters Tillotson and senior captain Porter-Garner, as well as adding sophomore first-team all-wac selection, Salmon. l With the graduation of Ali Griffin and Lisa Willardson, the USU goalkeeping unit will be very youthful, including sophomore Molli Merrill, junior transfer Aleena Shelton and freshman Ashlyn Mulford. Merrill had a solid spring, looking to take over the goalkeeper position after the graduation of second-team all-wac honoree Griffin. Newcomers There are 11 newcomers on the 2009 roster, including two transfers. These rookies are from all across the country from the Beehive State to North Carolina to Washington. What Cairns Said About The Newcomers... Obviously with the graduation of two of our four starting defenders last year, a big emphasis in our recruiting for this class was to bring in defenders. We have a good mix of central defenders and outside defenders. Notes l Freshman Rachel Feuz is the second Feuz sister to don the cleats for USU. Her sister Nicole (Feuz) Gooch is tied for the all-time Aggie lead for goals in a match, knocking in three goals two times in l There are five newcomers who will vye for playing time at the defender position, including Amy Marple, Kami Montgomery, Lindsay Obray, Feuz and Natalie Norris. The quintet will be looking to solidfy the USU defensive line. Midfielders The Aggies return a strong corps of midfielders for the 2009 season. Utah State will see some change in the midfield as two first-team all-wac selections will change positions. Senior Lindsey Smart will be making the move from defender to midfielder, while sophomore Chandra Salmon moves from the midfield to the backfield. What Cairns Said About the Midfielders... Our midfield has a strong returning corps. We return Lindsey Smart in the midfield, a first-team all-conference player for us who is very versatile. She has proven that she can play well on both sides of the ball. Notes l The midfield has a solid mixture of youth and experience. Junior Stefani Shiozaki started all 22 matches last season for the Aggies, while both junior Heather Pond and sophomore Allie Maduell saw significant time in l The Aggies welcome two new midfielders in freshman Courtney Cawley and sophomore transfer Ellen Larsen who both look to add depth to the USU midfield Utah State Soccer Media Guide 3

28 Aggie Administration 2009 Utah State Stan Albrecht University President Scott Barnes Athletics Director 26 Stan L. Albrecht was named Utah State University s 15th president and assumed his new position on Feb. 1, At the time of the announcement, Albrecht was serving as executive vice president and provost at Utah State, a position he held since He previously served as its dean of the College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences from During his tenure as President, Albrecht has announced a comprehensive fund-raising campaign with an official fundraising goal of $200 million. In March 2008, President Albrecht announced that the university had exceeded the campaign goal only one year after the announcement of the campaign s public phase. In August of 2008, the campaign goal was officially doubled from $200 million to $400 million and the closing date for the campaign was extended to July Albrecht said the campaign s success in its first year is impressive, but the real message lies outside the numbers of dollars raised. The real message is in the lives of our students that have been changed by the opportunities created for them as a result of the generous gifts to our scholarship programs, he said. The real message is that we are continuing to build a university of excellence, a university of imagination, a university of promise and a university that epitomizes leadership in all senses of the term. Prior to his arrival at Utah State, Albrecht served as an administrator and professor at the University of Florida from He also served for 18 years at Brigham Young University ( ), including three years as academic vice president and associate provost. He began his career as an assistant professor of sociology at Utah State University in 1970 through A sociologist, Albrecht has written extensively, including as a co-author of the textbooks Social Psychology and Social Science Research Methods, both published by Prentice-Hall. He has authored numerous scholarly papers on a wide range of topics, including the environment, energy development and rural health. Albrecht received his doctorate from Washington State University in 1970, a master s degree from Washington State University in 1968 and bachelor s degree from Brigham Young University in All three degrees were in sociology. He is a member of the Science Committee for the Minerals Management Service of the U.S. Department of Interior. He has served as a council member of the Society for Human Ecology and as vice president of the Rural Sociological Society. Albrecht is married to Joyce Albrecht, Utah State s Director of Stewardship Programs WAC Champions Since being named Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Utah State University on March 7, 2008, Scott Barnes has worked tirelessly to improve the landscape of Aggie Athletics and has cast a vision that includes progress toward meeting many intercollegiate athletic priorities. And despite the instability within the American economy since his arrival at USU, Barnes list of accomplishments has generated a newfound hope and excitement for USU Athletics. During his first year on the job, Barnes has successfully negotiated several new initiatives and has created a new intercollegiate athletics-funding plan to include self-generated revenue, student fees, and future institutional support to first stabilize and then grow the annual operating budget. Among Barnes many accomplishments thus far at Utah State include a new student-fee referendum that will annually generate $2.1 million for Aggie Athletics. He has also overhauled USU s development operations to include a 100 percent increase in Big Blue Scholarship Fund dollars and membership over the next four years, and created a new development position within the athletics department to expand major gift and overall fund-raising efforts. Another priority for Barnes during his first year on the job at Utah State was improving the overall look of the football program. Plenty of progress has already been made in this area as Barnes conducted a very successful football coaching search that resulted in the hiring of Gary Andersen, and has already raised over $1.2 million toward a five-year goal of $2.5 million to improve the football program through the creation of a Competitive Excellence Plan that calls for a new scheduling philosophy, increased operational support and further facilities developments. As for facilities, Utah State continues to see constant improvement under Barnes as its new Aggie Sports Hall of Honor, located on the first floor of the new Jim & Carol Laub Athletics-Academics Complex, will open in the fall of Construction for a new state-of-the-art off-court facilities complex within the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum began in the summer of These enhancements include new locker rooms and lounge areas for men s and women s basketball and volleyball, and a new film room for women s basketball and volleyball. Along with upgrades to facilities and increased donations under Barnes, Utah State also flourished athletically during the academic year as it claimed five Western Athletic Conference team championships men s and women s cross country, women s soccer, men s basketball, men s outdoor track and field which is the most in its four years in the WAC and tied for the most in a single-season in school history as USU also won five Big West Conference championships in 1994 and Even more impressive than Utah State s athletic achievements during the past year are its continued successes by its student-athletes in the classroom. Overall, USU s student-athletes traditionally rank among the best in the WAC with an 82 percent graduation success rate and a cumulative 3.04 grade-point average. During the academic year, USU had 181 student-athletes earn academic all-wac honors to lead the league, and 150 were recognized at its annual Joe E. and Elma Whitesides Luncheon for earning a 3.2 or better GPA. Utah State has also been recognized nationally under the leadership of Barnes as it was named the most economically efficient athletics department in the nation in June, 2009 following a study done by Texas A&M s Laboratory for the Study of Intercollegiate Athletics. Barnes himself has also garnered national attention as he has been selected to be a faculty member for the Division I Athletics Director Association Institute in Barnes, 47, received his bachelor s degree from California State University, Fresno in 1986, as well as his master s degree in 1993 in physical education with an emphasis in athletic administration. He and his wife, Jody, were both student-athletes at Fresno State, as he was a member of the basketball team, while she was on the track team. Barnes was born June 23, 1962 in Spokane, Wash. He and his wife have one daughter, Milanna (13) and one son, Isaac (11).

29 Aggie Soccer Western Athletic Conference In its 48th year, the Western Athletic Conference continues to evolve and features some of the nation s best intercollegiate competition. One thing that remains unchanged is the persistent nature of the nine schools in the WAC to advance their programs to contend at the top levels of the NCAA. The WAC provides its student-athletes the chance to travel to scenic destinations and gain exposure in some of the nation s most diverse markets. In addition, the WAC s student-athletes work to achieve the highest levels of success with the academic support of their respective institutions. The WAC has experienced tremendous success. The WAC has sent a total of 27 teams to bowl games since 2001, including more than half of its teams in 2008 with a record-tying five teams. Boise State has won 88 football games since joining the conference, the second most in the nation during that time span ( ). The conference sent teams to back-to-back BCS games as Hawai i earned a bid to the 2008 Sugar Bowl following Boise State s unforgettable victory in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. In men s basketball, the WAC has sent at least two teams to the NCAA Tournament in 23 of the past 26 seasons. Every current school in the WAC has competed in the NCAA Tournament since In baseball, the WAC has boasted two national champions since 2003 including Fresno State s College World Series victory in In women s sports, Fresno State softball has competed in every NCAA Tournament ever held while Louisiana Tech basketball has played in all but three. Current WAC alums have made their presence felt as well. David Carr (Fresno State) was the first player selected in the 2002 NFL Draft. Cheryl Ford (Louisiana Tech) was named the WNBA Rookie of the Year and helped the Detroit Shock win the league s championship in In 2004, the United States softball team won the Olympic gold medal with former Fresno State players Laura Berg and Lovie Jung. Jeff Weaver (Fresno State) earned the win in the St. Louis Cardinals World Series clinching victory in Quarterback Colt Brennan (Hawai i) finished third in the 2007 Heisman Trophy voting, and in 2008, Natasha Kai (Hawai i) helped the United States to a gold medal in soccer at the Olympics in Beijing. In 2001, the WAC partnered with ESPN for coverage of football and basketball giving the conference national exposure from one of the most respected broadcast entities in the country. An extension was signed in 2008 that guarantees over 300 regular season WAC contests and 45 championship events will be aired on the ESPN networks through the spring of The WAC also officially added WAC.tv in 2006 to give fans streaming internet access to many of its postseason championships including volleyball, soccer, swimming and diving, basketball, gymnastics, softball and baseball. The WAC is the sixth oldest among the nation s 11 Division I-A conferences. Its history traces back to July 27, 1962, when the original six-team league of Arizona, Arizona State, Brigham Young, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming began competition. The first championship was held in November 1962, when Arizona won the men s cross country title and New Mexico followed with the first WAC football title. Arizona finished second in the NCAA College World Series and, less than three years later, Arizona State claimed the league s first NCAA title when the Sun Devils won the College World Series trophy. Fresno State was the last WAC school to earn an NCAA team title when it won the College World Series in Since the WAC s inception, several changes have occurred. UTEP and Colorado State became members in September 1967, while Arizona and Arizona State withdrew on June 30, The WAC then added San Diego State (1978), Hawai i (1979) and Air Force (1980). Before 1990, the WAC sponsored championships only in men s sports. However, a merger with the High Country Athletic Conference formed a single conference under one administrative structure, and the athletic year was the first in which both men and women competed under the WAC name. Fresno State was added in 1992, and then in 1996, the women s programs from Air Force and Hawai i along with six new schools (UNLV, Rice, San Jose State, SMU, TCU and Tulsa) came into the WAC. Air Force, Brigham Young, Colorado State, UNLV, New Mexico, San Diego State, Utah and Wyoming withdrew on June 30, Nevada (2000), Boise State (2001) and Louisiana Tech (2001) were added while TCU withdrew following the season. The current membership was established on July 1, 2005, when Idaho, New Mexico State and Utah State joined the WAC after Rice, SMU, UTEP and Tulsa withdrew. The WAC has had just five commissioners in its history. Paul Brechler was named the first leader of the conference and held the position from He was followed by Wiles Hallock ( ), Stan Bates ( ), Dr. Joe Kearney ( ) and Karl Benson (1994-present). Presently, the WAC crowns team and individual champions in 19 sports eight men s and 11 women s. For the men, there are championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, tennis, indoor track and field and outdoor track and field. Championships for women are held in basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and volleyball. The WAC office has been located in the Denver area since the conference s inception with the exception of a two-year stay in Phoenix from Utah State Soccer Media Guide 27
