Marquette, the only team to beat the Pioneers in the BIG EAST since DU joined the league (both MU wins in the tournament), will visit Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium in the Mile High City for the first time since the Golden Eagles knocked off Denver in the BE Final in 2016 on Saturday at 1 p.m. MT. The Pioneers have won all four BIG EAST regular season meetings against the Golden Eagles. The Pioneers will head back to Villanova next weekend for the 2018 BIG EAST Championships, Presented by Jeep. 3 THE TIERNEY FILE Head coach Bill Tierney is in his ninth season with the Pioneers, holding a record at DU and a career record in his 34th season. Tierney became the first coach to win National Championships with two different programs in 2015, and has an NCAA-best seven men s lacrosse national titles to his name (six at Princeton). Tierney is also the first coach to win 100 of his first 140 games in charge at two different programs. Tierney became the third DI coach to record 350 wins in 2015 at Villanova, and is second in wins (391 - RIT/Princeton/Denver 1982-pres.) by a Division I head coach, behind John Danowski (395 - LIU Post/Hofstra/Duke pres.). FIFTH SEASON IN THE BIG EAST Denver wrapped-up its fourth-consecutive BIG EAST regular season title with a 12-2 win over [20/20] Providence on April 22, The Crimson and Gold are now 25-0 all-time in BIG EAST regular season play. The Pioneers had their 21-game winning streak against conference foes snapped on May 7, 2016 in the BIG EAST Final against Marquette. X MARKS THE SPOT Faceoff man Trevor Baptiste is (.718) from the X in his career, setting Denver s school record for career faceoff wins on April 1, 2017 vs. Georgetown, and is second in NCAA history in that category (second in ground balls as well). In Denver s OT win against Towson, Baptiste became the third player in NCAA Division I history to record 1000 faceoff wins. Baptiste has had double-digit faceoff wins in 63-of-64 games (2018 opener at Air Force) of his collegiate career, 15+ wins in 45 career games, including eight times in 2018 and 20+ wins in 21 career games, including in 11 of DU s last 22. Baptiste s 20 ground balls on April 16, 2016 vs. St. John s broke the DU singlegame record and sits ninth in the NCAA record book. Baptiste s 22-for-22 game against Cleveland State on 02/25/18 was the second most faceoff wins without a loss in a single game in NCAA history. Baptiste was named a 2017 Tewaaraton Award Finalist in 2017, the third finalist in three years for the Pioneers (Wes Berg , Connor Cannizzaro ). The Denver senior was also the first faceoff specialist to be named a finalist. Baptiste has scored six goals in the last five games. DOUBLE-DIGIT GOALS Denver scored double-digit goals in 26-consecutive games prior to Denver s 9-8 overtime win at Notre Dame on 03/13/16. The stretch is now 56-of-65. The Pioneers have scored double-digit goals 123 times since the arrival of eighthyear head coach Bill Tierney. DU is when scoring double-digit goals since the start of the 2010 season. Denver has scored double-digit goals 142 times since Matt Brown joined the staff full time in Since 2008, Denver is TWO SIDES TO EVERY STORY Denver is 83-5 under head coach Bill Tierney when its defense allows fewer than 10 goals in a game, including a loss in the 2017 National Semifinals. The loss when allowing nine goals to Maryland in the National Semis was Denver s first since the arrival of defensive coordinator John Orsen. Denver is now 36-1 when holding its opponents under 10 goals under Orsen. The Pioneers held opponents to under 10 goals in six-straight games from March 21-April 18, 2015 for the first time since the Pioneers held opponents under 10 goals in nine-straight games from March 29-May 18, Denver kept its first shutout since 1971 (Commerce City) on 02/26/17 vs. Canisius. DU turned in the second-best defensive output under Tierney (both last season) on April 22, 2017, holding [20/20] Providence to two scores. Denver s four goals allowed against Notre Dame in the 2017 NCAA Quarters was the best defensive performance by Denver in its NCAA Tournament history. The Pioneers held Ohio State without a goal in a stretch of 26:10 to propel a 9-0 run in the Pioneers 2018 win. Denver caused 11 turnovers in its win over Ohio State on March 17, the most takeaways since recording 15 against Georgetown on March 29, The Pioneers have held opponents to six goals or less six times in 2018, including in each of DU s first four BIG EAST contests. Denver s offensive goal total vs. Georgetown was its lowest since March 1, 2008, a 9-6 loss at UMBC, and its lowest goal total in a win since defeating [RV] Brown 6-4 on March 4, 2000 at the Mile High City. 11 total goals (3/31 at GTOWN) is the lowest in a DU game since 04/07/09, a 10-1 win over Detroit. The [3/4] University of Denver men s lacrosse team used eight goals in the second half to pull away from Providence 13-6 on Saturday afternoon at Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium. Senior Joe Reid (Petaluma, Calif.) netted his second-career hat trick in as many games with three tallies to lead the Pioneers. Classmate Colton McCaffrey (Parker, Colo.) had a game-high four points with two goals and two assists, junior Colton Jackson (Highlands Ranch, Colo.) added three points with two goals and a helper, sophomore attack Ethan Walker (Peterborough, Ontario) matched Jackson s output and freshman midfielder Ted Sullivan (Tucson, Ariz.) had two goals in the second half to give the Pioneers five-multi goal scorers on the day for the 14th time since the start of the 2014 season. Junior attackman Austin French (Danville, Calif.) distributed from X on Saturday with a game-high three assists. Reid got the Pioneers on the board on their first possession with his ninth goal of the season on a feed from Jackson to give DU the lead on the road. Jackson added a goal of his own on the next possession to put the Pioneers up a pair with 12:55 to play in the opening quarter. Sean Leahey got Providence on the board, but Mc- Caffrey dragged his man into the midfield and buried his 17th career goal to send Denver into the second quarter with a 3-1 lead. PC s Nick Hatzipetrakos capitalized off a Denver turnover to open the scoring in the second quarter and cut the Denver lead to one at 3-2. I m really proud of the way we started the game, head coach Bill Tierney said. It s the first win of the season on a very rough day to play. I thought in the second half we got a little complacent, but that s a credit to Air Force for the runs they were able to go on. Overall, it was just a crazy day. It s a matter of just taking this win, and now we move on to Duke on Friday night. French added two assists to lead the game with five points, while senior attackman Colton McCaffrey (Parker, Colo.) chipped in two goals and a helper. Junior goaltender Alex Ready (Lancaster, Pa.) pitched a first half shutout, making six saves in the first 30 minutes. Ready finished with nine saves in the contest. Gaines got Denver on the board 28 seconds into the game with the first goal of his career after faceoff specialist Trevor Baptiste (Denville, N.J.) won it backwards. In his first game back in the offensive midfield after spending most of the time at SSDM a year ago, sophomore Danny Logan (Upper Arlington, Ohio) got the Pioneers second 1:16 later. Denver scored 18 goals in a half for the first time in the program s history to get out to a 13-goal lead at the intermission. Sophomore Ethan Walker (Peterborough, Ontario) had a career night with eight goals and an assist, the first Pioneer to find the back of the net eight times since Wesley Berg in the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Walker s nine-point night tied for the third-most points in Denver s single-game history behind only a 10-point first-half performance from Berg in 2015 and Jeremy Noble s 10-point performance at North Carolina in Baptiste s 17 ground balls, tied for the fourth-most in a single-game in Denver s history, and tied for his third-best performance. The Denver senior s faceoff win total tied for the 10th-best performance in NCAA Division I history. Junior quarterback Austin French (Danville, Calif.) added a career-high six point night with three goals and three assists. Freshman midfielder Ted Sullivan (Tucson, Ariz.) had his first four career goals to go along with his second career assist for a five-point night.
