Denver and Cornell were the only two unseeded teams to advance out of the first round in the tournament. The Pioneers return to Hempstead for the second-consecutive year for the NCAA Quarterfinals, this time to take on second-seeded Albany in a match-up of the top-two faceoff men in the country. Saturday will be the fourth meeting between the two schools, including the second in the NCAA Tournament (2013 First Round). 3 THE TIERNEY FILE Head coach Bill Tierney is in his ninth season with the Pioneers, holding a record at DU and a career record in his 34th season. Tierney became the first coach to win National Championships with two different programs in 2015, and has an NCAA-best seven men s lacrosse national titles to his name (six at Princeton). Tierney is also the first coach to win 100 of his first 140 games in charge at two different programs. Tierney became the third DI coach to record 350 wins in 2015 at Villanova, and is second in wins (394 - RIT/Princeton/Denver 1982-pres.) by a Division I head coach, behind John Danowski (397 - LIU Post/Hofstra/Duke pres.). X MARKS THE SPOT Faceoff man Trevor Baptiste is (.718) from the X in his career, setting the NCAA Division I career faceoff wins record in the Pioneers BIG EAST Semifinal win over Marquette. Baptiste became the third player in NCAA Division I history to record 1000 faceoff wins in Denver s win over Towson. Baptiste has had double-digit faceoff wins in 67-of-68 games (2018 opener at Air Force) of his collegiate career, 15+ wins in 45 career games, including eight times in 2018 and 20+ wins in 21 career games. Baptiste s 22-for-22 game against Cleveland State on 02/25/18 was at the time the second most faceoff wins without a loss in a single game in NCAA history. Baptiste was named a Tewaaraton Award Finalist for the second-straight year in 2018, the fourth finalist in four years for the Pioneers (Wes Berg , Connor Cannizzaro ). The Denver senior was also the first faceoff specialist to be named a finalist in Denver joins Virginia, Syracuse (twice) and Duke as the only four programs to have at least one finalist in four-straight years. DOUBLE-DIGIT GOALS The Pioneers have scored double-digit goals 124 times since the arrival of eighthyear head coach Bill Tierney. The loss when allowing nine goals to Maryland in the National Semis was Denver s first since the arrival of defensive coordinator John Orsen. Denver is now 39-2 when holding its opponents under 10 goals under Orsen (vs. GTOWN - BE Final). The Pioneers held opponents to under 10 goals in six-straight games from March 21-April 18, 2015 for the first time since the Pioneers held opponents under 10 goals in nine-straight games from March 29-May 18, Denver kept its first shutout since 1971 (Commerce City) on 02/26/17 vs. Canisius. DU turned in the second-best defensive output under Tierney (both last season) on April 22, 2017, holding [20/20] Providence to two scores. Denver s four goals allowed against Notre Dame in the 2017 NCAA Quarters was the best defensive performance by Denver in its NCAA Tournament history. The Pioneers held Ohio State without a goal in a stretch of 26:10 to propel a 9-0 run in the Pioneers 2018 win. DU held Marquette without a goal in the opening 26:28 of the regular season contest in a 4-1 Denver first half. Denver caused 11 turnovers in its win over Ohio State on March 17, the most takeaways since recording 15 against Georgetown on March 29, Denver s offensive goal total vs. Georgetown in the regular season was its lowest since March 1, 2008, a 9-6 loss at UMBC, and its lowest goal total in a win since defeating [RV] Brown 6-4 on March 4, 2000 at the Mile High City. Denver s three goals vs. Georgetown in the BIG EAST Final was its lowest since the Pioneers lost 12-3 at No. 2 Virginia on April 28, total goals (3/31 at GTOWN and 4/28 vs Marquette) is the lowest in a DU game since 04/07/09, a 10-1 win over Detroit. In two games against Marquette and in the BIG EAST Final against Georgetown, Denver had 37 shots saved (14/9/14) for an opponent goalie save percentage of.649. HAT TRICK TRIOS Denver has had three players record hat tricks in the same game 19 times since the start of the 2014 season (18: at Villanova 17: vs. Notre Dame, Air Force, Georgetown, at Marquette, Air Force; 16: at North Carolina, St. John s, vs. Providence; 15: vs. Duke, Georgetown, Providence, at Villanova, vs. Georgetown). The victory booked the Pioneers ticket to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the seventh time in the last eight years. Junior Dylan Gaines (Baltimore, Md.) led Denver s close defense with three caused turnovers. Following a regular season meeting that saw Notre Dame race out to a 6-1 lead in the first quarter, Denver controlled the pace of play in the opening period on Sunday. French opened the scoring with his 27th of the year with 13:18 remaining in the first off a feed from McCaffrey. French returned the favor 1:09 later for Mc- Caffrey s 11th of the season to double the Pioneers early lead. After 12:01 without a goal, Ryder Garnsey got the Irish on the board with eight seconds to go in the opening quarter in transition off a Denver turnover. Denver won the second quarter 3-2 to extend its lead to 5-3 at the intermission. Walker scored two nifty low-to-high goals in the center of the field for his 45th and 46th of the season, after being held without a point for the first time in his career last week in the BIG EAST Final against Georgetown. Garnsey got his second of the day with six minutes to play in the second, but French quickly answered to push the Denver lead back to three at 5-2. Garnsey finished off a first-half hat trick with 2:47 to go in the second to cut the Denver lead to the halftime margin at 5-3. Notre Dame had the best opportunity in the final 2:47, but junior close defenseman Dylan Johnson (Englewood, Colo.) threw a well-timed stick check with the Irish on a two-man advantage, and the Pioneers completed the clear. Notre Dame evened things up through 45 minutes on Sunday thanks to a 3-1 third quarter. Garnsey got his fourth of the day to start the scoring in the frame, and Notre Dame s first of two extra-man goals in the third quarter. Jackson got his first in the last four games to take Denver s lead up to 6-4, but Notre Dame got the final two goals of the quarter with tallies from Mikey Wynne and Bryan Costabile to send the two teams into the final 15 minutes even at 6-6. Costabile netted his 30th of the season with 11:38 to go to give the Irish their first lead of the game, but Walker answered 15 seconds later to even the score at 7-7 with 11:23 to go. Walker s goal started a 3-0 run for the Pioneers that also included French s 29th of the year with 10:12 remaining and Jackson s second of the game to make it 9-7 with 4:04 to go. Ready s 10th save of the day came on Costabile s search for a hat trick.

5 RECENT NCAA TOURNAMENT SUCCESS Denver is one of five programs to qualify for the NCAA Tournament every year since 2010 (Duke, Maryland, Notre Dame, Syracuse). DU won its first NCAA Championship in The Pioneers have reached Championship Weekend in five of the last seven years. Denver has now reached the NCAA Quarterfinals seven time in the last eight seasons. The Pioneers are one of four programs to reach the NCAA Quarterfinals seven times in the last eight seasons (Maryland, Duke and Notre Dame). Denver s five Championships Weekend appearances in the last seven years are behind only Maryland (6) in that span. Duke, who is in the Annapolis Quarterfinal, has been to four. WINNING WAYS Denver enters the NCAA Quarterfinals winners of nine of their last 10. The Pioneers won 13 of their first 14 games in the 2016 season before dropping the BIG EAST Final to Marquette and the NCAA First Round to Towson. Denver won the first seven games of that season. DU won its final 13 games of the 2015 season en route to the National Championship after entering the BIG EAST Tournament on a seven-game winning streak. The Crimson and Gold won 13-straight before falling to No. 1 Duke in the 2014 National Semifinals. DU entered Championship Weekend that season winners of 15-of-16. Denver reached Championship Weekend for the first time in program history in 2011, entering the national semis on a 12-game winning streak, and winners of 15-of-16. The Pioneers entered the 2010 NCAA Tournament on a nine-game winning streak (W 11-of-12) in Bill Tierney s first season at Denver. DU s longest Division I winning streak prior to Bill Tierney s arrival was a sevengame winning streak entering the 2006 NCAA Tournament. A GAME OF RUNS Denver has had runs or better in games under head coach Bill Tierney, including in Denver s consecutive games against Villanova and St. John s in KEEPING IT OUT OF THE NET The Pioneers held their conference opponents to 27 goals in the five regular season conference games. During Denver s 2015 National Championship season, the Pioneers held fiveconsecutive opponents to a combined 28 goals (at Lehigh, vs. Penn State, Georgetown, Villanova, at St. John s). The Pioneers have held opponents to six goals or less seven times in 2018, including in each of DU s five BIG EAST regular contests marks the first time in Denver s program history (dating back to club status in 1966) that the Pioneers have held five-straight opponents to under six goals. The 27-goals allowed over the five BIG EAST regular season games is the program s lowest in a five game stretch since 1970 when Denver held Colorado (2), Colorado State (6), Colorado College (8), Denver Lacrosse Club (4) and Colorado College (3) to a combined 23 goals. BONUS LACROSSE Denver is 10-6 in overtime under head coach Bill Tierney, winning the last six and nine of its last 10. Colin Rutan scored the game-winner for the Pioneers in their only overtime game of the season, an victory over Towson on March 24. Denver did not play an overtime game in 2017, and prior to the Towson win had played its last four overtime games against ACC schools, including three against Notre Dame (All Wins). REWRITING THE RECORD BOOKS Saturday s faceoff match-up between Denver s Trevor Baptiste and Albany s TD Ierlan features the top-two faceoff specialists in the country. In the BIG EAST Semifinals against Marquette, Baptiste became the all-time leader in faceoff wins in NCAA history. In 2018, Ierlan has broken the single-season ground balls record (240), will break the single-season percentage record (.834), is 13 wins away from the single-season faceoff wins record. Mayle was taken sixth overall by the Chesapeake Bayhawks, the 22nd Pioneer to be taken in the MLL Draft and the sixth first round pick in the program s history. Mayle made his MLL Debut at Denver on May 13, scoring a goal and picking up two ground balls in a win for Chesapeake. Baptiste is a three-time USILA First Team All-America selection, one of 59 players in the history of the game to earn that honor three times, and could become the sixth four-time First Team All-America pick for an award that dates back to DENVER ATHLETICS SUCCESS Denver Athletics has claimed the I-AAA Directors Cup in nine of the last 10 seasons, for the top finish in the Directors Cup standings amongst schools without football. The Pioneers have claimed 33 National Championships in their history (Skiing 24, Hockey 8, Men s Lacrosse 1). Colton McCaffrey and Thomas Tenney lifted the Morrow Cup as the Pioneers two members of the 2017 Champion Big Horns. The DU duo combined for 46 goals in the league last summer. Denver s March 3 opponent Furman is home for sophomore attackman Chad Kreuzer, who earned CCBLL MVP honors for the champion Big Horns. Senior faceoff specialist Trevor Baptiste (Denville, N.J.) went 11- of-13 with seven ground balls and added his seventh goal in his last seven games in the victory. Baptiste finished with double-digit faceoff wins for the 64th time in his 65-game career, and pulled to within 13 of tying and 14 of breaking the NCAA Division I faceoff wins record. Denver s defense held Marquette to just 10 shots on goal Saturday, and four goals, the best defensive output of the season and the fifth-straight game the Pioneers have held their opponents to under six goals. Junior Dylan Gaines (Baltimore, Md.) had two caused turnovers and four ground balls to lead the close D in both categories. Sophomore Josh Matte (Issaquah, Wash.) improved to 7-0 on the season, saving 60-percent of the shots he faced on Saturday. Junior attackman Austin French (Danville, Calif.) had the only hat trick in the game, scoring twice on the man-up. Sophomore attack Ethan Walker (Peterborough, Ontario) led the Pioneers with four points on a goal and three assists. Junior Nate Marano (Tustin, Calif.) scored the first and last goals of the contest to end up with two goals on three shots. After a slow start to the contest, Walker picked up a ground ball off a Marquette failed clear and fed Marano who beat Marquette s Cole Blazer (14 saves) 1v1 in transition to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead with 5:40 to go, the opening quarter s only goal. Denver improved to 9-0 when scoring first in 2018, and under ninth-year head coach Bill Tierney. The Pioneers used a 3-1 second quarter to take a 4-1 lead into the intermission. French scored his 19th and 20th goals of the year off helpers from Walker and freshman Ted Sullivan (Tucson, Ariz.) to start the second quarter scoring. Marquette broke a 26:28 goalless stretch to start the contest with Colin Riehl s third of the campaign, but Baptiste answered with this seventh of the season eight seconds later to restore Denver s three-goal advantage. Marquette and Denver split the third quarter with two goals apiece. Faceoff man Zachary Melillo took advantage of a defensive mistake off the opening faceoff of the half to score nine seconds into the frame and cut the Denver lead to two. Junior attackman Austin French (Danville, Calif.) scored half of Denver s goals and added an assist for a six-point night. The Pioneers advance to play the winner of Georgetown and Villanova in the BIG EAST Championship Saturday at 2 p.m. ET/12 p.m. MT. Baptiste finished 14-of-21 on the day, winning 9-of-11 in the second half and picking up nine ground balls. Sophomore Ethan Walker (Peterborough, Ontario) added a pair of goals in the Pioneers eighth-consecutive victory. With the win Denver improved to 9-5 all-time in conference tournament play, 6-2 in BIG EAST Tournament play and 5-0 in conference tournaments at Villanova. French opened the scoring with his 22nd goal of the season 82 seconds into the game to give the Pioneers the early advantage. Senior attack Colton McCaffrey (Parker, Colo.) netted his 10th of the campaign to double the lead on the Pioneers next possession. Jack Zerrillo cut the Denver lead in half with 11:24 to go in the first, but Denver ended the quarter on a mini 2-0 spurt with Walker s 43rd of the year and French s second of the day to make it 4-1 Pioneers after one. Marquette s John Wagner got the first 6v6 goal of the day for Marquette with 7:14 to go in the second quarter to bring Denver s lead back down to two at 4-2. French completed his fifth hat trick of the season, and his fourth in the last five games in the second quarter, beating his man from X for his 24th of the season. Anthony Orsini got Marquette back to within two at the intermission with his 15th of the year with 2:23 to go in the second. French scored his fourth of the night to open the fourth quarter and give Denver its biggest lead at 8-4 with 14 minutes to play. Marquette took advantage of two man-up situations in the fourth quarter to spark a 3-0 run to cut the Denver lead to 8-7 with 5:16 remaining, but a nifty goal from Walker to stop the run with 4:20 to go and an empty netter from French gave Denver a 10-7 victory. The goal total for Denver was its lowest since the Pioneers lost 12-3 at No. 2 Virginia on April 28, After a 6-5 game in Washington D.C. a little over a month ago, Georgetown s defense held the Pioneers again, shutting the Pioneers out in the opening 15 minutes. Jake Carraway got the Hoyas on the board twice in the first, with goals with 7:33 remaining and 19 seconds remaining in the first frame. Hoyas goalkeeper Nick Marrocco finished with nine saves in the first half, holding the Pioneers to just one goal in the opening 30 minutes. Lucas Wittenberg got his 19th of the season and Carraway completed his first-half hat trick to push the Hoyas lead to 4-0 with 9:54 to go in the half. The victory booked the Pioneers ticket to the NCAA Quarterfinals for the seventh time in the last eight years. Denver s win over Notre Dame is its third in the NCAA Tournament in the last four years (2015 Semifinals, 2017 Quarterfinals), and stopped Notre Dame s eight-season streak of reaching the quarterfinals, the longest active streak in the country heading into the 2018 NCAA Tournament. Denver was also the first road team to win in this year s tournament s first six games.
