SCHWAB TO ENTER GLEN BRAND WRESTLING HALL OF FAME OF IOWA Current University of Northern Iowa head wrestling coach Doug Schwab will be inducted into the Glen Brand Wrestling Hall of Fame of Iowa in April of The Hall of Fame is located inside the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Dan Gable Museum. The Class of 2011 includes Bill Zadick, Doug Schwab, Jason Smith and Joe Scarpello. Schwab will join two of his assistant coaches in the Hall of Fame. Doug s brother, Mark, was inducted in 2002 and Thompson was inducted in WESTERN WRESTLING CONFERENCE Coming off their best season, the Western Wrestling Conference, an NCAA Division I wrestling-only alliance, will begin its fifth year of competition in Charter members of the Western Wrestling Conference include: the United States Air Force Academy, North Dakota State University, the University of Northern Colorado, the University of Northern Iowa, South Dakota State University, Utah Valley University and the University of Wyoming. The WWC had a breakout year in , with three league wrestlers earning All-American honors. The conference has now had six All-Americans in its first four years of existence. In 2010, Wyoming s Joe LeBlanc (184) placed fourth at the NCAA Tournament, Northern Colorado s Justin Gaethje (157) finished seventh and Northern Iowa s Jarion Beets (174) was eighth. All three of those wrestlers will return in , as Beets and Gaethje are seniors, and LeBlanc is a junior. During the 2009 NCAA Championships, LeBlanc finished fifth at 184 pounds, while UNI s Moza Fay was sixth at 165 pounds and fifth at that same weight in In all, 17 wrestlers from the WWC qualified for the 2010 NCAA Division I Wrestling National Championships, 14 via automatic slots and three at-large selections. The WWC had four competitors who were seeded in the top-12 of their brackets. At 125 pounds, Wyoming s Michael Martinez was the No. 11 seed, while Utah Valley s Ben Kjar had the final seeded position, No. 12. In the 165-pound weight class, UW s Shane Onufer was the No. 8 seed and his teammate, LeBlanc, was in the No. 7 slot at 184 pounds. The 2010 NCAA West Regional served as the conference tournament for the fourth straight season. The tournament was held in Frost Arena on the South Dakota State University campus in Brookings, S.D. In the team race, Wyoming came from behind and won the West Regional team title by a half point over the 24-time defending champion Northern Iowa Panthers. It is UW s first-ever West Regional team title. The Cowboys also won the league s regular season dual title with an undefeated 6-0 record. Wyoming and Northern Iowa tied for the regular season championship in 2009, and UNI was tops in the league after both the 2007 and 2008 seasons. The league s three major postseason awards in 2010 were given to Wyoming s LeBlanc for Wrestler of the Year, Cole VonOhlen from Air Force as Freshman of the Year and Northern Iowa s Brad Penrith as Coach of the Year after his final season. In the near future, the goal of the league is to replace the West Regional with the conference tournament, which would then serve as the NCAA qualifier. The 2011 NCAA West Regional will be held on Sunday, March 6 at Clune Arena on the Air Force Academy grounds in Colorado Springs, Colo. The WWC recognizes student-athletes on both a weekly and full-season basis. Individual awards include Wrestler of the Week; All-Conference teams; an Academic All-Conference team; and Wrestler, Newcomer and Coach of the Year awards. The league also crowns a team champion following the conclusion of the regular season conference competition and the postseason tournament. The governance of the Western Wrestling Conference remains primarily with the member institutions. Scheduling of contests, assignment of officials and certain media relations functions remain with member institutions. With league members spread out over six states and two time zones, schools are required to compete against four league schools in dual action to be eligible for the regular season conference championship. Schools are encouraged to schedule as many conference schools as possible. A major benefit of having a league that is geographically spread out so far is the added exposure both in terms of media and recruiting - in new destinations. The conference affiliation also generates much interest within the seven schools substantial alumni base, which numbers nearly 800,000 combined. North Dakota State, Northern Colorado and South Dakota State have all made the move from Division II to Division I since joining the WWC. UVU moved directly from Junior College (NJCAA) Athletics to NCAA Division I and completed its reclassification during the season. 9 UNI WRESTLING
