1 FOLLOW THE SHA ONLINE SHA.SK.CA Sask_Hockey HOCKEY CANADA FOUNDATION'S GALA & GOLF EVENT On June 19-20, the City of Saskatoon hosted the 2017 Hockey Canada Foundation Gala & Golf with Honorary Chairs Mike Babcock and Todd McLellan. With half of the net proceeds of the Hockey Canada Foundation s largest annual fundraiser remaining in Saskatoon and the province to support the growth of the game, the Saskatchewan Hockey Association (SHA) and Saskatoon Minor Hockey Association (SMHA) will share the proceeds evenly, to support the following: The SHA will travel to 10 northern communities to host cross-ice jamborees for Initiation Program-aged (5- and 6-year-old) boys and girls. The special cross-ice bumpers will be left in those communities to support age-appropriate programming moving forward; A portion of the SHA funds will also go to the Saskatchewan Hall of Fame; The SMHA is using a portion of its proceeds to assist with the construction of Merlis Belsher Place at the University of Saskatchewan, a new twin-pad arena that will see the Association s ice-time allocation increase by 1,500 hours each season and will be built to accommodate sledge hockey. Philanthropist and U of S graduate Merlis Belsher, for whom the new arena will be named, has committed to match the funds to double the financial impact to the project; The rest of the funds directed at the SMHA will support the Association s Memorial Cup legacy fund, which is administered by the Association and SaskSport to assist families demonstrating financial need with costs associated with team fees, equipment, and transportation, for example. This year s event featured the 2017 Distinguished Honourees of the Order of Hockey in Canada include Scotty Bowman, Murray Costello, and Fran Rider. In addition Saskatchewan s own Fred Sasakamoose was honoured by Hockey Canada and the 2017 Hockey Canada Sledge Hockey Team received their 2017 IPC World Para Hockey Championship rings. The total amount of funds raised has not yet been released. This marked the first time the event was held in Saskatchewan. PAGE 1
2 SHA BOARD DECISION TO MAKE GEOGRAPHIC SUBDIVISION BORDERS IN FEMALE HOCKEY The SHA Board of Directors Decision to make Regina and Saskatoon Geographic Subdivision boundaries for Female hockey, like what exists for Male hockey, beginning in the 2018/19 season are as follows: The reasons for the decision are as follows; the primary reason is to encourage MHA s around the two cities of Regina and Saskatoon to offer Female Programming for those Female players who want to play Female Hockey and to promote Female hockey in order to attract additional players to the game. The SHA s mandate is to sustain the viability of hockey in our province that includes both maintaining what we have and growing the game for new participants. The way we do this is by building capacity in minor hockey associations. The closest MHA s that offer Female programming around the two cities are as follows; Regina: Moose Jaw, Balcarres (Pee Wee only) and Weyburn Saskatoon: Hague (Pee Wee only), Dinsmore (Novice, Atom, Midget), Rosetown (Pee Wee), Battlefords (Midget) and Lanigan (Bantam) The decision eliminates the two cities from having to accommodate females from outside their cities and forces them to recruit and retain more girls within their local community to play the game. The rules for both male and female hockey registrations around the two large cities are now the same. Females at the Midget AAA level are still able to play anywhere in the province on any of the eight teams that they are successful in making and that includes Regina and Saskatoon. Many of our members have indicated that if the Provincial body doesn t make decisions like this then MHA s will be reluctant to do so on their own and the same culture that currently exists will continue. The SHA Board of Directors has mandated the change for the 2018/19 season and strongly encourage those MHA s around the two cities to work together to develop plans to offer Female Programming and assist in growing the opportunities for young female to enjoy the game! 3 THE CALL WITH TRENT CEY Trent Cey SHA Manager, Officiating Hopefully everyone is enjoying their off-season and some much-deserved time away from the rinks, but planning for the season is underway for the Referee s Division. Applications are currently being accepted from officials to attend the level 4/5 Camp, which will be held in Regina Oct. 20 to 22. Along with opportunities for the next wave of elite officials, the SHA s Referee s Division is in the process of recruiting instructors to help cover the 85 clinics scheduled for the next season. The Instructor Seminar will be Sept. 9 and 10 in Saskatoon and clinic season will run up until Nov. 27. Registration and online modules are scheduled to be ready by mid-to late August for all officials as well. The SHA is also excited to be sending two officials to the OPOE Camp in Calgary July 25 to 29. Prince Albert referee Mick Pawlyshyn and Saskatoon linesman Aiden Penner will be representing our branch. The SHA would also like to acknowledge the winner of the Hockey Canada Official Award and the Southern Zone Awards. The winner of the Hockey Canada Most Promising Official Award was Owen Shirtlitte of Yorkton. Shirtliffe worked the finals at both the Western Canada Bantam Championship in Warman and the SaskFirst Tournament in Regina as a linesman and has worked games in the SJHL as well this season. Shirtliffe, 18, was also named the winner of the Zone 4 Most Promising Official Award. Matt Dueck of Swift Current was named Zone 3 s Most Promising Official, while Tanner Crozier of Regina won the Award in Zone 2 and Mariah Marton was the winner in Zone 1. The Hockey Canada Most Improved Official Award recipient was Avery Dudley of Swift Current. Dudley, a 18-year-old female official, moved up the ranks from peewee house through Bantam AA and worked games in the SFMAAAHL semi-final last season as well as the A and C finals of the Female SaskFirst Tournament. Dudley was also named the winner of the Zone 3 Most Improved Official Award. Other Most Improved Award winners were Dylan Calvert of White City in Zone 1, Cody Hall of Regina in Zone 2 and Parker Ellert of Melville in Zone 4. The third, and final, award presented this season was for the Most Deserving Official. The winner of the Hockey Canada Most Deserving Official was Greg Happ of Weyburn. Happ has done an amazing job rebuilding the Weyburn officiating program with a mentorship program and a major increase in recruitment of officials. Happ was the Zone 1 winner of the Most Deserving Official as well. The Zone 2 Most Deserving Official was Moe Ash of Regina, the Most Deserving Official in Zone 3 was Andrew Myers of Moose Jaw and the Most Deserving Official in Zone 4 was Ron Lutz of Melville. The SHA s Referee Division would like to congratulate all award winners and looks forward to what the future holds for the official program and all officials Saskatchewan Dr. Regina, SK #JERSDAY TEAM SASK (1991) This specific uniform was worn by the great Fiona Smith- Bell. Fiona is to be inducted into the Saskatchewan Hockey Hall of Fame this July 22nd at the Induction Dinner in North Battleford. PAGE 3
4 CHANGES TO SASKFIRST PROGRAMMING The SHA Board of Directors have approved a change to the SaskFirst Programming that will take effect in the 2018/19 season. The basis of the change is that the SHA does not feel it is a benefit to conduct Summer Camps in Late July/Early August any longer due to the fact it encourages players to continue skating year around and we are seeing an ever-increasing amount of overuse injuries. See below key dates for SaskFirst events.
