3 HEAD COACH THE MILHOUS FILE Villanova University (1995-present) (ten years) JOANIE Q. MILHOUS Head Coach 11th Season William & Mary, Cabrini College ( ) (four years) Now entering her 11th season as head coach, Joanie Q. Milhous has continued to build upon her goal of making Villanova field hockey into one of the most respected programs in the BIG EAST. Milhous enters 2005 with a record in ten years of coaching at Villanova and a career record in 14 seasons. At the end of the 2004 season, the Wildcats made their fourth consecutive trip to the BIG EAST Championship following a 2-3 season in conference play. The team ranked third in the conference for goals scored (52) and was second in assists (48). Three of the top ten stat leaders in the Big East were Wildcats, and Villanova defeated a ranked team (No. 15 Syracuse) for the second consecutive year. The Cats also out-scored their opponents over the course of the season. Milhous also led the Wildcats to the BIG EAST Championship game in 2001 and 2002, following an 11-year drought. On Wednesday, Sept , Milhous earned her 59th victory as Villanova s head coach and became the school s all-time winningest field hockey coach when the Wildcats defeated West Chester, 3-1, at Villanova Stadium. On Tuesday, Oct. 26, 2004, Milhous earned her 100th win at Villanova as her Wildcats routed City Six rival La Salle, 6-1. In May of 1995, Milhous arrived on the Main Line after a four-year coaching stint at nearby Cabrini College. In just four years there, she completely turned the program around. After recording only one win in her first season, Milhous closed her career at Cabrini with an 11-win season in 1994, earning her 1994 Pennsylvania Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors. Milhous accomplishments at Villanova have followed a similar trend. In her fourth season at the helm, Milhous guided the Wildcats to their most successful season in nine campaigns, posting a 13-7 record overall. The 13 wins was the most by a Villanova squad since the 1988 season when the Cats went In the past six seasons Milhous has compiled 71 victories highlighted by the two BIG EAST Championship appearances and the 1999 BIG EAST Coach of the Year award. One of the trademarks of Villanova s play has been their offensive explosiveness. Over the last four seasons the Wildcats have averaged 2.42 goals per game in the process of rewriting the record books. Four offensive records career goals, career points, career assists, and team goals have all been shattered. In addition to her role as the head field hockey coach, Milhous served as the women s lacrosse head coach from During her three seasons directing the women s lacrosse program the Wildcats posted a record. At the end of the 2000 season she stepped down from her position in order to concentrate entirely on field hockey. Milhous graduated in 1991 from the College of William & Mary where she earned a bachelor of arts degree in psychology. While attending William & Mary she was a standout for both the field hockey and women s lacrosse programs. In field hockey Milhous was a twotime Regional All- American and twotime All- Conference selection, as well as being chosen team captain for her senior season. She ended her career as the seventh leading scorer in Tribe history. In addition to her success in field hockey, she earned equal rewards for her play on the lacrosse pitch. After being named team captain, she also received Regional All-American and All- Conference honors. In each of her four seasons playing lacrosse, the Tribe was nationally ranked. She was voted to participate in the North/South Senior All-Star game in both field hockey and lacrosse. Milhous served as President of the Big East Conference Field Hockey Site Committee in 1998 and was also a board member of the Philadelphia Lacrosse Association from , representing the Philadelphia area colleges. 5 2005 SEASON OUTLOOK The 2005 season marks the 11th year in the tenure of head coach Joanie Q. Milhous. Milhous has produced seven consecutive seasons with 11 or more wins, and her squad could do it again this year. With the top three scorers from a year ago all returning, plus two goalies with solid conference experience, the Wildcats have what it takes to make a solid run for the conference title. Milhous teams have produced a winning record in each of the past seven seasons, and the Wildcats have played in the championship game of the BIG EAST tournament twice in the past four seasons. In 2004, Villanova finished with an 11-8 record, outscored its opponents 52-37, averaged 2.73 goals per game, and fared 2-3 in conference play. The Wildcats also earned their fourth consecutive trip to the BIG EAST Championship, where they fell in the semifinals to eventual champion Connecticut after a hard fought battle. Despite the graduation of two seniors - Vanessa Pizzulli and Simone Schunk - who were key components in the backfield, Villanova returns all of its offense, including its leading scorer from a year ago. Forwards Rory Rogers, Megan Foster and Lauren Campanelli will anchor play on the offensive end this season, and goalkeeper Erin Scott continues to improve, entering her third season in the net. With a talented core of upperclassman and a solid group of sophomores who gained valuable experience last year, Villanova has all the components it will need to pose a serious threat in the BIG EAST. Forwards The offense will be led by Rogers, Foster, and Campanelli. Last season, Foster exploded offensively, leading the team in goals (18) and points (41). She was named an All-Big East second team selection for her accomplishments, which included six multiple-goal games. Foster was also named Big East Offensive Player of the Week on two occasions last season and will bring her intensity back to the field as she looks to help the offensive unit. Campanelli was not far behind Foster, leading the team in assists (11), while also scoring nine goals. Rogers, a senior co-captain this year, continued her outstanding contributions to the offensive side of the field, scoring 10 goals while adding six assists and again leading the team in game-winning goals (3). Together, the three netted 37 of the team s 52 goals and all return to guide the Wildcats to another successful offensive season. Allison Boris and Courtney Linde are two freshmen who could provide an instant lift up front. Boris was the Lake Lehman High School top scorer in 2004 with 20 goals and 18 assists. She earned first team All-State as a senior. Linde scored 75 career goals, including a team-high 34 goals as a junior at Wissahickon High School. passer tallying five assists on the season. Somits provided key contributions in An aggressive attacker on offense, she started all 19 games as a freshman scoring five goals and one assist for 11 points on the year. Freshmen Sam Coveleski and Julia Noorduyn are both expected to provide depth and solid effort making an immediate impact in the midfield. Covelski was a three-year letter winner at Cape Henlopen High School playing in the midfield. Noorduyn comes to the Main Line from The Netherlands. She will bring her national experience to the Wildcats after being named team captain at the National Indoor Championship in Defense Senior Katie DiLullo will continue to add strength to both the midfield and backfield, while senior Stephanie Grejtak will contribute on defense as well. DiLullo has been a force for the Cats in recent years and is known for stopping offensive attacks. Grejtak started all 19 games last season and recorded one defensive save. Seniors Sarah Francis and co-captain Natalie Balthrop round out the experienced backfield. Francis started all 19 games, while recording three goals and eight assists for 14 points. She provided the game-winner against Rutgers, the team s first BIG EAST victory of the season. Balthrop played in all 19 games, starting 17, after missing most of the 2003 season with a knee injury. She is one of the team s strongest defenders and provides both stability and pose for the Cats. Junior Sarah Way brings her sense and awareness to the pitch as she moves into a more significant role in As the lone sophomore on defense, Jenny Nelson is expected to build upon a successful 2004 campaign. She saw action in nine games and scored her first collegiate goal, the game winner, against Bucknell. Freshman Lauren Weil will make an impact on the Wildcat D. A senior team captain at Ocean Township High School, she led the team in assists and was recognized as a Shore Conference All-Star in Goalkeepers Junior goalie Scott comes into 2005 as the go-to keeper for the Cats. She played 97 percent of the minutes in the net, finishing with an 11-8 record, 1.88 goals against average, and a.788 save percentage. She also had four shutouts. However, Alex Whalen will be ready to challenge for the starting spot. Last fall, Whalen played in two games, compiling three saves, a.600 save percentage and a 4.46 goals against average while spelling Scott. Midfielders The midfield will be led by Sarah Schmidt and Catherine Somits. Schmidt is coming off an outstanding sophomore season where she started 18 games. 16 THE BIG EAST The BIG EAST Conference moves into with an emphasis on the word Big as the league becomes the largest Division I-A conference in the nation with 16 outstanding academic and athletic institutions. The goal of the BIG EAST has always been to compete at the highest level and to do so with integrity and sportsmanship. In , the league welcomes five new members: University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida. BIG EAST institutions reside in nine of the nation s top 33 largest media markets, including New York, Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa, Pittsburgh, Hartford, Milwaukee and Cincinnati. With the incoming members, the BIG EAST markets will contain almost one fourth of all television households in the U.S. Since opening its doors in 1979, the league has won 25 national championships in six different sports and 123 student-athletes have won individual national titles. Last year, Providence s Kim Smith won the NCAA women s country championship. The Notre Dame women s soccer team took the 2004 national title. The BIG EAST has always been able to boast that some of its best students are also some of its best athletes. More than 300 studentathletes have earned Academic All- America honors. In , three BIG EAST student-athletes were named the national scholar-athletes of the year in their respective sports Connecticut s Emeka Okafor in men s basketball, Notre Dame s Vanessa Pruzinsky in women s soccer and St. John s Chris Wingert in men s soccer. BIG EAST student-athletes also have continued their success after leaving the classrooms and playing fields. Former Connecticut women s basketball standout Dr. Leigh Curl was inducted into the Academic All-America Hall of Fame in Former Georgetown men s basketball star Dikembe Mutombo was named a winner of the President s Service Award, the highest honor in the U.S. for volunteer service. The BIG EAST continues to thrive in the basketball arena. In , Connecticut became the first school in NCAA history to win the men s and women s NCAA titles in the same season. With the Syracuse men and the UConn women grabbing NCAA crowns the previous year, the BIG EAST also became the first conference in NCAA history to win the men s and women s titles in consecutive seasons. In fact, the BIG EAST has won five of the last six women s basketball crowns and three of the last seven men s titles. Whether it s the student-athletes or the league as a whole, moving proactively has been a consistent strategy for the conference that was formed in The Big East has continually turned challenges into opportunities to bolster its strength. In the spring of 2001, the BIG EAST added women s lacrosse to its growing list of sports. The inaugural women s golf championship was held in the spring of The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979, following a meeting of athletic directors from Providence College, St. John s, Georgetown and Syracuse Universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut and Boston College completed the original seven-school alliance. While the membership has both increased and changed, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered. The conference reflects a tradition of broad-based programs, led by administrators and coaches who place a constant emphasis on academic integrity. The BIG EAST Conference has enjoyed a leadership role nationally. Its student-athletes own significantly high graduation rates and their record of scholastic achievement notably show a balance between intercollegiate athletics and academics. Any successful organization needs outstanding leadership. Michael Tranghese, the league s first full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate to Dave Gavitt, moved into the Commissioner s chair in In his first year, he administered the formation of The BIG EAST Football Conference. The league has long been considered a leader in innovative concepts in promotion and publicity, particularly regarding television. Those efforts have resulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST student-athletes. The conference has enjoyed long-standing relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC. While BIG EAST basketball games are regular sellouts at campus and major public arenas, including the annual BIG EAST Championship in Madison Square Garden, attendance figures also are significant at BIG EAST soccer, women s basketball and baseball games. More than 500 BIG EAST athletes have earned All- America recognition and dozens have won individual NCAA national championships. The BIG EAST has been well-represented in U.S. or foreign national and Olympic teams. Several athletes earned gold medals in each of the last five summer Olympiads. The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providence where the conference administers to more than 5,500 athletes in 23 sports VILLANOVA FIELD HOCKEY PAGE 16

24 ACADEMICS ACADEMIC SUPPORT: A WORD FROM DR. DAN REGAN ACADEMIC SUPPORT FACULTY REPRESENTATIVE Twenty-eight years ago Villanova University was one of the leaders among NCAA Division I schools in recognizing the need for providing academic support for its student-athletes. This is a University which treasures its outstanding academic reputation and is equally proud of its student-athletes who represent Villanova every year in intercollegiate contests. Today, college athletes are expected to be involved in their sports and in training all year long. Time demands are extraordinary. The Office of Academic Support helps our student-athletes to manage these athletic demands without sacrificing their academic careers. At Villanova, the Office of Academic Support reports to the Academic Vice-President. It works with the Athletic Department, whose directors and coaches have always understood the primacy of academics. The entire University community is proud of the fact that all the student-athletes who stay at our University for their entire careers graduate with as fine a degree as any in the country. The Office of Academic Support works in conjunction with the many offices of academic support on campus available to all students. Moreover, with its Freshman Mentoring program and academic tutors, the Academic Support staff oversees the academic progress of Villanova s student-athletes throughout the year. Villanova s Athletic Department has never lost sight of the mission of its University. The faculty, alumni, administrators, and students can be assured that this tradition of excellence continues. Dr. Dan Regan Academic Support Faculty Representative OFFICE OF ACADEMIC SUPPORT The Office of Academic Support is located in the Jake Nevin Field House. Dr. Dan Regan serves as the Academic Support Faculty Representative and works in conjunction with Associate Director, Amy Miller, Assistant Director, Tara Nelson, and Intern, Jen Morelli. Collectively, the Office of Academic Support provides comprehensive academic support to all Villanova student-athletes. A computer facility, located in the Office of Academic Support, is available to all student-athletes. The facility offers fully equipped computer work stations with direct access to the campus network. For the convenience of the student-athletes, a laptop program has been established that allows student-athletes to borrow a laptop for an extended period of time, including weekend road trips during the respective season. In an attempt to help freshman adjust to college life, both academically and personally, all incoming student-athletes are required to participate in the Freshmen Mentoring Program. Each freshmen is assigned to a graduate mentor who will assist them throgh an individualized academic monitoring program through the year by meeting on a weekly basis. The Office of Academic Support also provides tutorial support for student-athletes in every academic discipline offered at the University. Tutorial sessions in math for Arts & Science majors, business calculus and math analysis are held weekly at the Academic Resource Center. ACADEMIC RESOURCE CENTER The Villanova Department of Athletics recently expanded Academic Support s domain into the newly renovated stadium press box. With the addition of a new infrastructure during the summer of 1999, the department s new Academic Resource Center (ARC) was formed with the intent of providing an efficient and comfortable learning environment to serve as an extension of the Office of Academic Support, which insures academic success for all student-athletes. The benefits of the ARC include: A more personally tailored academic support system. Computer equipped study hall housing laptop computers. Internet and network acccess with each computer Increased space for freshmen-mentoring. Conference area for lectures and study hall. Private study areas ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE Villanova student-athletes continue to excel in the classroom. During the academic year Wildcat student-athletes produced an overall grade point average of As a team, field hockey produced two semesters with a GPA of 3.0 or better. For their effort, 12 players were honored as Big East Academic All-Stars with seven team members named to the prestigous NFHCA Division I Academic All-Star team. During her eleven seasons as a head coach, Joanie Q. Milhous has coached 90 Big East Academic All-Stars and 30 NFHCA Division I National Academic All- Stars. Each year the Wildcat field hockey team posts one of the better team GPA s at Villanova BIG EAST Academic All Star 2005 VILLANOVA FIELD HOCKEY PAGE 24
