7 Despite losing nearly 62 percent of their offense from last season, the 2002 Villanova University field hockey team looked to its experienced veterans as well as talented newcomers to step in and absorb some of the offensive responsibilities. The athletes responded to the challenge as Wildcat seniors, juniors and freshman combined to score 37 of Villanova s 43 goals. Their explosive offense combined with stingy defense led Villanova to an 11-9 overall record, with a 4-1 mark in the Big East the best conference performance from a Wildcat squad since the 1992 team also went 4-1. For the second consecutive season, Villanova advanced to the Big East Championship game, dropping a heartbreaker to Connecticut in the finals. Richmond almost stole the game, but Pizzulli stopped a shot that was rolling past an outstretched Meghan Helwig.
