1 Phillips-Rooks Extension District #5 Volume , Issue 2 November 2017 Phillips-Rooks Extension District #5 Offices Closed The Phillipsburg and Stockton Offices will be closed on Friday, November 10, 2017 in observance of Veterans Day. We will also be closed Thursday, November 23, 2017 and Friday, November 24, 2017 in observance of Thanksgiving. Kansas 4-H Online Enrollment and Participation Forms The Kansas 4-H Online Enrollment system is open. All 4-H members must complete this online process to enroll in 4-H. The website to enroll in 4-H is Participation Forms are completed during the online enrollment process. Please contact the Phillips-Rooks Extension District Offices with any questions. Stockton Office or Phillipsburg Office Project Leaders Needed As members enroll in projects, it is important to provide them with learning experiences in those areas. Adults and teens are needed to guide the members in their project learning. If you have a skill to share, visit with your club leader to get involved. Beginning of the New 4-H Year Now is the time to set your project goals for the year. Think about what it is that you want to do and learn through your 4-H activities. Write it down! If it's on paper, it's much easier to reach that goal. If you set your goals now, you will have a great guide to follow to get to where you want to go by the year's end. Make the most of your 4-H year by planning ahead. Take a few minutes to record those goals in your 4-H Kansas Award Portfolio (KAP) now, so it will be easier to complete them at the end of the year. Now is also the time for the 4-H club to set some goals for the year. The goals should be statements of what leaders, members, and parents would like to see the club accomplish. Involving everyone in the club is the fastest way of ensuring enthusiasm. Some examples of club goals are: Members present a project talk or demonstration at County Club Day Hold a club project tour Complete a community service project Volunteer Screening Process All volunteers that work directly with youth in the 4-H program are required to complete the Volunteer Screening process. For new volunteers, this includes completing an application form, background check, personal interview and the Volunteer Screening Orientation Training. For current volunteers, complete the annual Volunteer Screening Renewal form. Background checks will be repeated every three years. Remember, returning volunteers who allow their renewal forms to lapse one year, are required to go through the entire Volunteer Screening and Training process again.

2 Saying Thank You is Very Important Two little words that mean so much...thank YOU! We don't take the time to say or write thank you to others who help us along the way often enough. Thank you notes are a polite way of expressing gratitude, but more importantly they are an effective means of building strong relationships and creating goodwill for you and your 4-H organization. Dog Judge Certification Training 4-H Dog Judge Certification Training will be held January 26-28, 2018 in Wichita, Kansas. This is also a good opportunity for local project leaders and older 4-H members to observe the training and thus better understand how they will be judged at invitational and the State 4-H Dog Show. Details for registration will be available in late November. Project Highlights Sheep The sheep project will help you learn more about the sheep industry. You will learn how to care for and feed a market lamb or build your own breeding flock. You can enroll in market lamb or breeding sheep. ROOKS COUNTY NEWS Rooks County Junior Leader Happenings The Rooks County Junior Leaders met on October 9, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. at the Harding Hall 4-H Building. Treasurers were elected as follows: Taigen Kerr, Cady Pieper, and Megan Roy. The group decided on the following activities for the year: Arts Day Camp, Babysitting Clinic, Fishing Clinic, Foods Day Camp, Photography Day Camp, and Livestock/Animal Day Camp. The next meeting was scheduled for February 12, 2018 at 7:30 p.m. at the Harding Hall 4-H Building. Rooks County Livestock Committee Meeting The next Rooks County Livestock Committee meeting will be held Monday, November 13, 2017 at 6:00 p.m. at the Harding Hall 4-H Building. All 4-H clubs should be prepared to give a report on the following items: round robin, dividing market classes by breed instead of weight, changes to rabbit and poultry show, ultrasounding market animals, addition of meat pen rabbits and meat pen poultry to the 4-H/FFA Livestock Sale, and market animal maximum weights for the 4-H/FFA Livestock Sale. Rooks County 4-H Council Meeting The next Rooks County 4-H Council meeting will be held Monday, November 13, 2017 at 7:30 p.m. at the Harding Hall 4-H Building. Officers will be elected at this meeting. Please contact the Stockton Office ( ) by November 10, 2017 if you would like to run for an office.

3 Rooks County Achievement Celebration The Rooks County 4-H Achievement Celebration will be held Sunday, November 5, 2017 at 4:30 p.m. at the McKenna Youth Center in Palco. Following the ceremony a movie will be played and popcorn and pop will be served. Rooks County Horse Hippology and Quiz Bowl Practices Horse Hippology and Quiz Bowl practices will begin on Sunday, October 29, The Seniors will meet from 1:00-3:30 p.m. and the Juniors will meet from 1:00-1:45 p.m. Practices will be held at the First Christian Church in Plainville. Practices will be held every Sunday in preparation for Horse Panorama which will be held January 27-29, 2018 at Rock Springs 4-H Center. PHILLIPS COUNTY NEWS Phillips County Achievement Banquet The Phillips County Achievement Banquet is scheduled for November 5, 2017 beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the Phillips County 4-H Building. This year s meal will be catered by Bigge s Country Kitchen. Please contact the Phillipsburg Extension Office at or wendyt@ksu.edu if you plan to attend. Rooks County 4-H Participation Forms Rooks County 4-Hers as you enroll and complete the 4-H Participation Form make sure you change your doctor from Genny Robben-Rahjes. Genny has retired from the Rooks County Health Center Clinic. Phillips County 4-H Council The next Phillips County 4-H Council meeting will be held on November 27, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. at the Phillips County Annex. Jr. Leaders Needed to help with Cloverbuds. Cloverbuds would like to know if there are any Junior Leaders interested in preparing a program for one of their meetings. They usually meet on the second Sunday of the month at the Phillips County Annex beginning at 2:00 p.m. If anyone is interested in leading a program, please contact Myrna Goracke at Phillips County Shooting Sports 4-H Shooting Sports BB gun will begin on Sunday, November 12, Remember to sign up for shooting sports BB gun when you enroll on 4Honline. There is a $15 fee to help cover costs of supplies. Classes will be held in the basement of the Fischer Building in Phillipsburg at 4:30 p.m. This will be the first class in the 8 week

4 fundamental/safety course. All beginners are required to pass the 8 week fundaments/safety course before continuing on to competition matches. Previous shooters are welcome to attend this course for a refresher. At least one parent or guardian is required to attend the course. We will be offering BB gun, Air Rifle, and Air Pistol competition after successful completion of the fundamental/safety course. Questions may be directed to one of the following instructors: Phillips/Rooks County Shooting Sports Program plroshootingsports@yahoo.com, Brent Norris , Beth Norris , and Jay Hofaker Phillips County 4-H Coat Exchange The Phillips County 4-H Council in conjunction with the local 4-H clubs is hosting a Community Coat Exchange. Individuals who are in need of a winter coat may come to the Phillips County Annex and browse the selection of coats. Those who have coats that are still in good, wearable condition, may take them to the extension office, located at th Street in Phillipsburg or take them to your local 4-H Club to be donated. The exchange will run from November 1, 2017 thru January 22, The hours are from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday thru Friday. The remaining coats will be donated to the Orphan Grain Train and dispersed throughout Kansas and the rest of the United States. For more information please contact, Phillips-Rooks District #5 Extension Office at Phillips County 4-H Event Scholarship Phillips County 4-H Council offers scholarships to Phillips County 4-H members to help with the cost to attend state and national 4-H events/contests. To receive this scholarship 4-H youth must complete a scholarship application within 30 days of attending the event.
