1 The Alain HILAIRE Herd Décembre 2015 Decembre 2015 The Alain Hilaire herd is located in the Corrèze, in Masseret. Breeder for 30 years, Alain indeed settled down in 1985 with 40ha and about twenty cows bought from Mister Jean Rivet, a well-known breeder in Haute-Vienne. An excellent start for the work of genetic selection undertaken by Alain. Later the herd got bigger and today counts 75 cows for approximately 75ha. Alain takes care of all the operations, also with the help of his wife Natalie, on everything in the administrative, and to look after animals at the need. Ø How to summarize the herd s management? AUCTION SALE Saturday 16st JANUARY The farm is on draining grounds naturally adapted to keep cows outdoor. Since the beginning, I thought about following this opportunity, organizing the calving seasons in the most favorable periods and thus in August-September and February-March. A few years ago, Alain built a stall whit settling photovoltaic panels on the roof. It allows him to house the youngest animals in winter, even if Alain always favors the outdoor system. 2 Ø What are the selection criteria that you looked for during these years on your animals? "The presence in the breeding of bulls chosen on precise c r i t e r i a w a s determining for my breeding. I work with animals registered on Herd Book, that we can define mixed type. I always liked long and deep animals, with very good pelvis, remarkable maternal traits, good legs and very docile. I tried to select my animals by following these criteria, in the respect for the fundamental of the race limousine. The farm is on draining grounds naturally adapted to keep cows outdoor Three years ago, I began to work on the polled character and today more than 50 % of births are polled; it allows me obviously a better managing of my herd, less of cost, less time to look after animals, less stress for animals. In my opinion, the goal is to have a herd with 80 % of polled animals. Ø Tell us 30 years of genetics. I bought the first bull in the herd of Hilaire Bernard, my brother, then a bull bought from the Lanaud station, GRIGOU RJ in co-ownership with my brother, from Jouhannet in the Creuse; a bull that produced very good cows. Then NASHVILLE RJ, been born in Bourbouloux herd, produced exceptional mothers with very good pelvis. RADIEUX once again from Bernard Hilaire, son of MADISON RR and, to follow, JEPETO RJ (Gaec Bourbouloux). 2

3 Alain bought famous CASIMIR, f r o m Mazaleigue in the Corrèze during a sale o r g a n i z e d b y K B S Genetic in 2008, is the bull who gave a real bend to Alain Hilaire. The bull won in shows, by participating until two years of age in various competitions with prestigious classifications. Alain then decided to use only for the reproduction. Seen the exceptional production of this bull it was an intelligent decision. CASIMIR Today half of the cows of the breeding are daughters of Casimir and a large part of the sons of these cows were sold in France and abroad as bulls. When Casimir reached the age of 7 years, I had to decide if let age him in the farm or sell him. At the end, by means of KBS, I sold the bull in Ireland (NCBC) and today it is possible to use semen (marketed by KBS Genetic) More recently, EUROPEEN, born in the herd of Thierry Blanchet in the Creuse, bought during a sale Simbeef KBS, made many progress in the herd, for the calving ease as well as for beef conformation. Today it is HERCULE PP, ( S C E A o f Nouailhas)son of Clovis Pp, bought in Simbeef Sale in 2013, a heterozygous polled bull, who give many satisfactions to Alain. IMPAIR Pp I work with KBS Genetic since its foundation and I was always satisfied with the choice to join this company. After 30 working years, we make this decision for reasons of health, of course not thoughtlessly! Once again, in this very important moment, we confide in KBS Genetic in putting on sale the herd, the work of a whole life with a lot of passion. 93 animals on sale among which 25 full cows, 25 cows with calf at foot, 3 grown-up bulls (2 polled), 4 young bulls (3 polled), 26 maiden heifers (6 polled), 8 weanling heifers (6 polled).
