Remember if any 4-H members are showing at the Harris County Fair, Youth Expo of Harris County, and the State Fair of Texas you will need to register so you can become active before our office can complete the entries for the shows. 2 Quality Counts for exhibiting livestock Quality Counts verification is required for all youth exhibiting livestock (market and/or breeding) at major livestock show in Texas (including State Fair of Texas, Fort Worth Livestock Show, San Antonio Livestock Show, Houston Livestock Show, Star of Texas Livestock Show, San Angelo Livestock Show, & Heart O Texas.) For juniors 13 or under as of August 31st there will be 10 questions and your certificate number will be good until you turn 14. For seniors 14 or older as of August 31st there will be 20 questions and your certificate number will be good until you graduate. Harris County Fair The dates for the Harris County Fair are October 9-12, The tag in for Harris County Fair lambs, pigs and goats will be on Saturday, August 3rd from 8am-11am at the Farm & Ranch. Harris County Fair & Youth Expo of Harris County There is an entry night scheduled for Thursday, August 22nd for the Youth Expo and Harris County Fair entries. 3 Let s Go...Let s Grow 4-H Club Managers Training August 13th Tuesday Let Go Lets Grow for Harris 4-H Club Manager s will offer sessions geared toward those new to the 4-H program and great new strategies for those ready to boost the level of participation at club meetings. Join us for up dates, new project sessions and revved up ideas for an exciting new 4- H year! One Day 4-H Join over 10,000 other 4-H members in Texas on October 12, 2013 as they step out into their communities to make a difference in one day! Celebrating five years of making a difference, One Day 4-H is our program s way of giving back through community service projects that 4-H members plan, organize, and implement in their community and county. From something as easy as mowing the lawn of a neighbor by yourself, to your county organizing a 5K for a cause it s all about what YOU can do in one day! Session topics include 4-H Scholarships, Ag Product ID, Poultry, Recordbooks and record keeping, Vet Science Skillathon, Wildlife Skillathon, Fuel Up Play 60, Rabbits, and more! District 4-H Council Meeting will also take place at Leader College, so 4-H ers interested in getting involved in Council or running for a District Council Officer in the future are encouraged to participate. District 4-H Council is geared for youth 14 and up. 3

4 Summer Stitches is an opportunity for parents and children to learn to sew together. We have planned some simple projects to get you started and we will have sewing machines and general supplies. All you need is Summer Stitches Sewing Workshop August 10-Monday 9:00 a.m.to 3:00 p.m Bear Creek Drive, Houston, PROJECTS: Simple Dress A simple summer sleeveless dress that can also be made shorter and worn over shots as a top. Dresses For Africa The simple sleeveless dress can be made as a service project and donated to children in Africa. Shorts- (boys or girls) Simple summer shorts with elastic waistband and hemmed on the machine. Summer Stitches is open to all youth ages 9 to 17 years of age. The registration fee $25.00 per person with lunch served. 5 Blast off this summer with 4-H Rockets Away beginners rocketry workshop for youth 9 to 17 years of age. Learn the basics and practice your skills as an engineer and a scientist testing and designing a variety of rocketry projects. Resources provided to build Foam and Stomp Rockets. Rockets Away Workshop August 1-Thursday 9:00 a.m.to Noon 3033 Bear Creek Drive, Houston, PROJECTS: NASA Foam Rockets with Rocket Launch Challenge, testing trajectory and design. NSAS Stomp Rockets with Rockets Away Launch build, design and launch to test distance and trajectory. Kelvin Pop Rockets and rocket launcher activities to demonstrate the power of air pressure. Demonstration of the Estes Apollo III Rocket with presentation 4-H Rocketry, resources and instructional materials for starting a project. Rockets Away is open to all youth ages 9 to 17. The registration fee $25.00 per youth and $10.00 per adult with resources provided for the youth project only. Please register by July 29th. 7 Junior Master Gardener Teacher/Leader Training August 15th Thursday 9:00 Am to 2:00 Pm Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service 3033 Bear Creek Drive, Houston, TX Texas A&M AgriLife Extension 4-H Urban Youth Development is conducting a Junior Master Gardener Level I, (Grades 3rd to 5th) Teacher/Leader Training on August 15th, Thursday.
