1 CEN E YOUR WEEKLY GUIDE TO ARTS AND CULTURE IN THE WILD WEST ARTS MUSIC MOVIES TELEVISION THEATER OUTDOORS FOOD THE SHERIDAN PRESS JULY 26-AUGUST 2, Rhonda Vincent visits the Sheridan County YMCA to talk about bluegrass music and the instruments they play.
2 2 JULY 26-AUGUST 2, 2017 THE SHERIDAN PRESS SCEN E Rhonda Vincent performs in benefit concert SHERIDAN When you mix together a banjo, mandolin and an upright bass, you often hear the songs of bluegrass. Locals were treated to the fastpickin sounds of Rhonda Vincent and the Rage, who stopped in Sheridan to play a concert for residents at the Whitney Center for the Arts at Sheridan College last week. Not only were crowds treated to some of the best bluegrass music in the Mike Dunn The Sheridan Press nation, proceeds from the concert benefited programs at Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Wyoming. Earlier that day, Vincent performed in front of a small audience filled with members of the nonprofit organization and other children at the Sheridan County YMCA. Vincent s resume includes five Grammy nominations, multiple awards from the International Bluegrass Music Association and awards from the Society for the Preservation of Bluegrass Music of America. Vincent has released 16 studio albums dating back to She has appeared on recordings by country music stars Dolly Parton, Alan Jackson, Tanya Tucker and Joe Diffie. In 2000, the Wall Street Journal called her The new Queen of Bluegrass. So how did the Queen of Bluegrass end up in Sheridan? It goes back to a relationship built over years. Sandy Thiel, director of community engagement for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Wyoming, has known Vincent for several years. Thiel s daughter used to work for Vincent, and the Thiels have remained friends with Vincent to this day. Anytime we get a chance to come through Sheridan, we stop, Vincent said. It s so beautiful here. Vincent performed several benefit concerts for the organizations in which Thiel has been involved. Whenever they are driving through I-90, (Vincent) calls me and asks, Can I do something for you? Thiel said. During her visit to the YMCA, she and her band played for 40 minutes while fielding questions from the audience. At that time, children had the opportunity to learn about different instruments, including the banjo, slide guitar, fiddle, upright bass, guitar and mandolin. They are all accomplished, Thiel said about Rhonda Vincent and the Rage. You just don t get that quality of music around here all of the time. It s an unusual treat. Spectators also heard from Vincent about her writing process and her life touring as a musician. The final numbers from the concert have yet to be totaled, but the benefit will have a significant impact for the local Big Brothers Big Sisters, which has a staff of three people but serves many children in the community, according to Thiel. Still, Vincent praised Thiel and her work and said she does great work in the community. She s an amazing lady and such a great friend of ours, Vincent said. YMCA last week.

I m not a native Wyomingite. Whenever I talk to folks born-and-bred here about values, my origins seem to come up. I have heard that s just how people around here are more than a few times. And as a confessed outsider, who has happily made Sheridan my home, I want to give you my observations on how people David Myers The Sheridan Press around here are. People here are friendly. Whenever I travel back to the Midwest, I am surprised by the lack of on-thestreet greetings. I seem to get more strange looks when I say hello to people than actual responses. People around here support one another. One of the things that struck me in Sheridan was the abundance of causes. Sheridanites feed the hungry, support veterans, they love backing children s causes, and per capita, Sheridanites support the arts with more gusto than anywhere. There are visual artists from sculptors to painters to potters, musicians of all kind, and then there s the theater. So much theater! Children s theater through Tandem Productions, school productions multiple times a year, professional theater through the WYO Theater, the Wyoming Theater Festival and The Whitney Center. And then there s community theater through the Sheridan Civic Theatre Guild. CTG was started in CTG produces four to five plays every year, most of which are performed in the Carriage House Theater on the grounds of the Trails End State Historic Site. When I joined the CTG board, we began a conversation about how CTG can stand out with so many things competing for our audience s time. Sheridan is a community that supports the arts, yes, but there are only so many audience members to go around! We asked the question, What makes CTG different? The board decided that CTG wants to be the only place where year after year, Sheridan can get contemporary theater in an intimate and personal venue. Contemporary theater can present some challenges to a small town audience, including sometimes shocking language. Contemporary playwrights are often the products of worlds far different than ours. Their characters think and express themselves in ways that are sometimes jarring, but that doesn t mean what they have to say isn t important. CTG understands our audience, and we endeavor at all times to stage important, entertaining and thought provoking theater. We always evaluate the productions we consider in terms of not only what the characters say, but how it is being said. We too believe that language matters. We cannot promise to reject any play that features profanity, but we can promise to thoroughly evaluate the language used to ensure that it is a vehicle for the story being told, and not simply included to elicit consternation. CTG knows our audience expects a lot from the theater they support. We know that given the opportunity, they will recognize quality theater when it is presented, and let us know when the quality is lacking. That s just how people around here are, and we wouldn t have it any other way. Follow CTG on Stage or see our website at DAVID J. MYERS is the president of the Sheridan Civic Theatre Guild.
