July 8 25, 2012 World Hereford Conference, Olds Alberta See later in this newsletter for more information. FUTURE AGM LOCATIONS: There was a proposal at the 2011 AGM meeting in Salmon Arm that we change the location of the AGM each year so more people from different areas can take part. That was deferred to the November 17, 2011 teleconference to make a decision. After some discussion it was decided that the December 2011 newsletter would include this information: All regional clubs will be given the opportunity to host the AGM for each year beginning in These club requests would be available for the next teleconference to be held in February. The requests from the clubs will be forwarded to Bob Gowans to be presented at the February teleconference. World Hereford Conference July 8 25, 2012 The itinerary as presented by Gord Stephenson was in the fall newsletter. Just to follow up, BCHA has appointed Daryl Kirton to head the WHC committee dealing with pre tour, cattle transport, BC booth etc. If you would like to arrange transport for your cattle to Olds for the event, would like to have a pen available for the pre tour presentation at either Murphy Ridge Farm or Copper Creek Ranch or if you have any questions regarding the BCHA presentation at the WHC, please contact Daryl at 3-d-l@telus.net or call Any help you can offer will both in BC and at the BC Booth and cattle in Olds will be greatly appreciated as well. There are plans to present all types of BC produce, wines, etc. as well as Herefords, so it will be very interesting. Remember, Daryl Kirton pointed out that the last World Hereford Conference held in Canada was 36 years ago. He suggests that we take advantage of this opportunity to show the world the top quality cattle we produce in BC. It
could be many more years before we have this event so close to home. Also, don t forget about the steer show affiliated with the Calgary Stampede and CHA is putting up $10, for the top Hereford steer. This will be limited to purebred Hereford steers only, so this will be a great time for you to evaluate your potential steers in your herd and prepare them for this show! CHA REPORT Daryl Kirton is in Russia as I type this newsletter. He is there as part of a contingent of Canadian diplomats touring some of the Russian facilities that the Canadian Hereford heifers have been exported to. Daryl will have a very interesting CHA report in the next newsletter describing his experiences in Russia. date on the advertising fees. THIS IS WHY IT IS SO IMPORTANT FOR ME TO HAVE YOUR CURRENT ADDRESS. SO IF YOU HAVEN T RECENTLY RECEIVED AN FROM ME, IT IS BECAUSE I DON T HAVE YOUR CURRENT ADDRESS. PLEASE ME WITH YOUR ADDRESS!!!! PROVINCIAL WINTER FAIR The Provincial Winter Fair is the last 4-H event of the year in BC held September 23 rd to 26th. This year the PWF changed their venue to Barriere which proved to be very well received and will be hosting the fair again in BCHA BREEDERS DIRECTORY We will be producing another BC Hereford Breeders Directory in The format for the directory will be the same as the previous ones as it is felt that the current format is most easily transported. Once again Vic Redekop has agreed to be the member heading the directory committee. Advertising will be forwarded to Vic with the closing date for all ads being January 15, The inside front cover, inside and outside back cover and the centre spread will be open for bidding on those positions as in the past. All bids for these positions will also be forwarded to Vic. The process for bidding will start at the base advertising rate for a full page and then you decide how much over that amount you would like to bid on your chosen position. At the closing date for ads, Vic will then contact all of the advertisers to complete the process. Vic has contacted the printer in Chilliwack to discuss the current cost of printing ads and whether or not colour ads would be possible, which they are. At this time the costs are not available, but as soon as Vic receives this information, I will be sending out a mass to all members that I have current address for to bring them up to Sarah Tomlinson of the South Thompson 4-H Beef Club won the duffle bag this year with the best Hereford steer which was purchased from the Olgivie Stock Ranch. Congratulations Sarah! OSR Miss Harmony Xtreme 1X winner of the Grand Champion Open Heifer at Provincial
Winter Fair. She is from Ogilvie Stock Ranch, bred & owned by Bryan Hoffman and shown by Kari Lynn Dundass. She is sired by GH Neon 17N X a daughter of Deanfiled 96K Standard 2P Art Harfman from Bridesville showing the Provincial Winter Fair Reserve Champion open steer, which he purchased from Copper Creek Ranch. Art was a 4-H member, 4-H leader and he and his family raised registered Herefords for many years. Congratulations to all of the winners! ALL BREED PURE BRED FEMALE SALE October 1, 2011 marked the inaugural Pacific Invitational All Breed Female Sale in Williams Lake. For a first of anything, it was a very successful event. The inspiration for this sale was initiated by Jack Brown of the BC Angus Association and the other BC Breed Associations quickly agreed that this was a very good idea. It has been getting far too expensive for any individual Breed Organization to host a pure bred sale. Since the onset of BSE there have been a large number of BC Pure Bred breeders of all breeds who have dispersed their herds. This has directly impacted the individual breed sales as it reduced the numbers of cattle consigned to the sales as well as the number of potential buyers. This in turn, increased the sale costs for each consignor which greatly impacted their bottom line which was already in a fragile situation. All of the work done by committee members behind the scenes was instrumental in making this the success that it was. The sale venue was well prepared for the elite females to settle into. There was a banquet held the night before the sale at the Overlander Hotel. The food was great and all of the breeders were able to have a good visit the night before the sale. There was a silent auction along with the banquet which brought in a few extra dollars to use as seed money for next year s sale, and people had lots of fun with that as well! The BC Angus Association held their Annual General Meeting this same weekend, so that brought a lot of Angus breeders to the sale, both in consignors and potential buyers. There is talk of a lot of the other breed associations holding their AGM s the weekend of the sale next year as well and this should attract even more potential consignors and buyers of all of the breeds to take part in next year s sale. There were a total of 63 females consigned as well as four 4-H prospect steers. Of these there were 39 Angus (Blacks and Reds); 5 Gelbviehs; 7 Herefords; 4 Limousin; 2 Shorthorn and 6 Simmental. The consignments came from Vancouver Island in the south to Houston in the Northwest and all areas in between. The cattle found new homes all over B.C. and the Prairie Provinces. The 4-H prospect steers were also very well received and were sold to as far away as the Lower Mainland to Vanderhoof. The quality of the consignments was second to none, all of the consignors brought animals that they would gladly take home if their reserves were not met. The prices reflected the quality with the top selling of each breed being: Black Angus heifer calf consigned by Poplar Meadows Angus selling for $ to Doug Haughton of Kamloops; the Red Angus bred heifer consigned by Heart of the Valley Farms was bought by Kevin Blair of Lanigan Sask. for $ Limousin were also divided by colour with the black heifer calf consigned by Pinnacle View
Limousin finding a new home at Payne Livestock of Lloydminister Saskatchewan for $ and the red Bred Heifer consigned by Hi-Valley Limousin going to Paul Verdegaal in Lumby who paid $ for her. The Simmental heifer calf consigned by KRS Simmentals sold to Clint Ellis of Aldergrove for $ with the bred heifer consigned by Webster Simmentals selling to Ron Crosby of Vanderhoof for $ Cordy Cox consigned the Gelbveih heifer calf which sold to Thackery Gelbveih Farms in Weyburn Sask. for $ In Herefords the polled bred heifer consigned by Dennis & Darlene Borrow of Williams Lake sold to Daryl Kirton of Aldergrove for $ and the horned bred heifer consigned by Vallee Creek Herefords found her new home with Barb Watkinson of Lillooet also for $ Top selling Hereford calf was consigned by Courtenay Polled Herefords and sold to Justamere Farms in Sask for $ Plans are already in the works for the 2 nd annual Pacific Invitational All Breed Female Sale in We expect that because of the success of this first sale, next year s will be even bigger and better! With cattle prices going up and a more positive outlook in the industry we can see this sale getting more and more attention from cattle producers all over Western Canada! BCHA WEBSITE Don Richardson has agreed to be the member in charge of our website. Apparently our website has not been updated for about 1 ½ years and in its current format is difficult to make any changes. Hopefully, within the next few months we can direct people to our website and be sure that the information displayed there is current! Speaking of the Richardson s, Don and Leslie are currently touring New Zealand and have been posting pictures on their Facebook page. It would appear that they are having a blast and of course checking out Hereford farms there and have even been able to see some offspring of their Tlell Red Cedar, there are pictures of them on his facebook page also. Colin and Diane Springford are coincidently also currently touring New Zealand. There are also some great pictures of their down under experiences on Diane s facebook page. It will be hard, I am sure for them to leave the summer time down there and have to come home to the winter drizzle! Although my adventures are perhaps not quite as exotic as the Richardson s or the Springford s I finally got to go somewhere that I have wanted to go for years.agribition!!! Evaline McPherson and I made the trek to Regina and spent 3 days in cow heaven! We spent the whole first day watching the Angus judging, then that night attended the Hereford National Sale and saw some great Herefords change hands. Day 2 started at 8 am with Hereford judging and we watched great Herefords go through the show ring until after 5:30 that evening. Saturday was the Supreme show and WOW that is all I can say just WOW what a spectacular show. There were champions eligible for this event from various shows across the country including IPE. There were 43 females, each brought into the ring with great fanfare under the lights. There were 5 judges evaluating these animals then all of the cows left the ring and the bulls were presented. 38 fantastic bulls were brought into the ring, again with great fanfare under the spotlights. The same judges then evaluated the bulls. The Bulls were then lined up against the boards facing the crowd and the cows were paraded back into the ring and were lined up on the other side facing the crowd on that side. From these fabulous champions, the judge s placings were then tabulated and the top ten females and the top 10 bulls were brought out into the middle of the arena, this was exciting enough but the best was yet to come. One judge was chosen to slap the Supreme Champion female so with all of these beauties lined up the suspense was palatable as to who was going to be slapped. The Agribiton Supreme Champion was the Black Angus who was Grand Champion at Agribition. Soo Line Annie K Then it was the bulls turn to have the spotlight on them. Of the top ten Bulls pulled out, 2 of them were Herefords the grand Champion at Agribition
TH 89T 743 Untapped 425X ET and the Grand Champion at the Olds Fall Classic FCC 40U Sprint 6X. The judge designated to slap the Supreme bull was very dramatic, which made the event even more spectacular if that was possible. Anyway, he went up and down the line at least twice and finally slapped the magnificent Agribition Grand Champion Charolais CSS Sir Gridmaker 2W. He was the whitest Charolais I have ever seen and the spotlight on him was breathtaking. If you haven t had the opportunity to attend Agribition, I would certainly recommend the trip. Agribition provides Agribition Shuttlebuses and these great volunteers will pick you up from anywhere and transport you right to the door of the event you want to attend! They even picked us up at the airport and drove us to the hotel! try to keep this newsletter going on a regular basis which makes the next one to be published in August Well, another newsletter put to bed.
