4 Official Publication of the Kansas Angus Association, Inc. Nov/Dec issue ad/copy deadline : October 10 The President s Pen Cowfash n (Cow Fashion) Rock n the Muck Boots!! I bet by now many of you are tired of wearing your rubber boots this summer. Mother Nature has blessed much of the state with good summer moisture. For some mowing and weed eating has become a twice a week job. I wonder if anyone makes an iphone app guidance system for my lawn mower to help me catch up a bit. I recently attended a rodeo in Eureka Kansas that was hit with 4+ inches of rain the night before. That is an area where gray to black clay type soils are common and hold moisture well. There was not a dry place to stand anywhere. Nearly every contestant s truck and trailer got towed in and out by a tractor. The arena was about 8 of sticky slop. Even though this situation was not what was expected the attendees made the best of it. I found myself amazed at the fashion choices of the evening. Many women were dressed in full make up, colorful blouses and nice jeans. The guys wore their nice hat and favorite shirt. However, the best part was seeing them rocking their stylish muck boots in many different colors. Both kids and ladies wore leopard spotted, zebra stripped, hot pink and lime green. The fellows sported five buckles, fireman s boots and dairy style as well. I decided that seeing this unexpected fashion show unfold in front of me needed a name. Therefore, the word Cowfash n was created. Definition: A farm or ranch persons ability to adapt to and over come a given situation and come out looking good doing it! The more I thought about this I decided that the term Cowfash n would apply to many different scenarios throughout the course of a ranch day. For instance, you find yourself out checking cows and see that a first calf heifer is calving unexpectedly early. Of course she would be the one that is hard to catch so she was left out of the calving pen a little longer. In her distress and to avoid capture this heifer runs off to go stand in the pond. Your every attempt of throwing dirt clods and sticks to dislodge her comes up unsuccessful. Therefore, she is still standing in the pond looking at you. However, being the resourceful cattle person you are you recognize an opportunity. Even though your roping skills are a little rusty this might be the only place this girl stands still long enough for a couple of throws. You get her roped and out of the pond then successfully pull a nice bull calf. This calf goes on to top your bull sale. This equals Cowfash n! Analyze, concur and succeed. I hope your fall sale and calving season goes well. If we continue to find ourselves rock n the muck boots into winter make the best of it. Wear them in Cowfash'n. 5 Replacement Heifers, System Approach Autumn is exciting as you wrap up haying season and start crop harvest; fall calving begins while you wean the spring-born herd mates. With a growing cow herd and lower calf prices compared to recent highs, producers may want to take a closer look at their whole system for choosing replacement heifers, developing them and allocating feed resources. Careful selection now ensures quality genetics for generations to come, and it s easier than ever to select a collection of future matriarchs. Genomic testing lets you see genetic potential long before incurring development costs. So, instead of thinking about the cost of those tests, look at the opportunity to save money by identifying bottom-end heifers and marketing them earlier. From a resource-use perspective this increases feed and forage efficiency because what you have only goes to develop the right heifers. While selection precision becomes better and simpler, understanding the best management practices for heifer development has grown increasingly complex. A recent article from the Journal of Animal Science by Andrew Roberts and other USDA and university researchers took a closer look at how to set up heifers for greater efficiency throughout life. They started with the premise that nutrient restriction during key development periods can program cattle to be more efficient when nature restricts intake during drought or winter. The first of two periods the authors considered was very early in the heifers lives: while they were in utero during the last trimester (December to March for this spring-calving herd). The second period began two months after the heifers were weaned at 180 days and continued through the start of estrus synchronization, months of age (December to April). These two periods are when spring-calving herd managers naturally supplement forage resources because of natural limitations. Restricted feeding is not a new idea, and short-term trials have shown it can improve feed efficiency, but data were limited on the long-term influence of restricted nutrition during development. In this decade-long experiment, the heifers dams received either adequate protein supplement at 4.0 lb./head or marginal at 2.5 lb./head daily of alfalfa cubes or hay. That s just 62% as much supplement, but net protein is 85% because of protein in forage. As expected, restricting the protein resulted in less cow weight gain and pre-calving body condition, but pregnancy rates were not different for the two groups at 91% for restricted and 92% for adequate. When heifers from those dams were weaned and then split into either an adequate development diet with unrestricted access to corn silage and alfalfa hay, or restricted to 80% of the adequate groups intake, the restricted management offered a 26% reduction in feed required for development and reduced the heifer daily gains by 0.35 lb. Weight gain was greater for restricted -development heifers when all heifers were managed together from breeding to the fall pregnancy check. Pregnancy rates were not significantly different between adequate (89%) and restricted (88%) heifers over the 10 years of the experiment. Day of first calving was not different between the nutrient management groups either, suggesting comparable reproductive performance. Year-to-year differences were noted primarily due to variable forage quality, which does need to be at least average quality to provide restricted heifers with adequate nutrition for compensatory weight gain during summer grazing. When you combine the two treatments, how the cow was managed followed by how her replacement heifer was developed, you can see how the system might look long-term. It could pay to set up and maintain a consistent program. In this data set, there was no difference in stayability in the herd by 5 years for heifers that were restricted in development and born to cows restricted to 85% of the control herd during gestation. On the other hand, heifers restricted in development but born to cows fed adequate nutrition during gestation were significantly less likely to be in the herd by then, likely because they were less adapted to foraging in tougher pasture conditions. This suggests it would pay to begin and maintain a program of limiting supplement during third trimester and later restricting supplement in the replacement heifers from those cows. The one drawback is a likely setback in carcass traits of economic value in the whole system. The restricted development program reduces marbling and ribeye area and produces lighter body weights in the yearlings. That s a setback you could overcome with more targeted genetic selection such as the use of genomic testing for initial sorting of replacements at the gateway to a more efficient cow herd. Those decisions, repeatedly, are based upon months of in-depth planning and thoughtful deliberations. On Aug the organization s Board of Directors met in Denver, Colo., to consider goals and strategies for the development of a new Long Range Strategic Plan (LRSP) for the Association. The overarching objective of the LRSP is to support the mission of the Association to enhance Angus genetics, broaden its influence within the beef industry and expand the market for high-quality Angus beef worldwide. "This process has been a continuation of the commitment that Angus has made to the industry to pioneer new opportunities and ultimately build demand for Angus genetics and high-quality beef, says Allen Moczygemba, Association CEO. The LRSP process began earlier this year and included unprecedented, valuable input from members, commercial cattle producers, feeders, packers, academia and allied-industry professionals to ensure all had a voice in the process. The results of this input revealed a changing cattle business with evolving needs, and the importance of Angus leadership as the industry looks to grow demand and market share. While the final LRSP will not be unveiled until the National Angus Convention, Nov. 5-7, in Indianapolis, Ind., the Board shares the following five key areas of focus that surfaced through LRSP discussion: Genetics, Commercial Programs, Research Priorities, Product, and Industry Leadership and Education. The Board also evaluated existing Association programs, and considered strategies for improving and expanding their use and relevance among cattle producers across the industry. The Association most recently conducted a long-range strategic planning process in The 2011 plan resulted in facilitating the widespread adoption of genomics technology among Angus and commercial producers; the launching of innovative marketing and informational platforms, such as Angus TV; and the creation of the Education and Culinary Center at Certified Angus Beef s headquarters in Wooster, Ohio. The final 2016 LRSP will be unveiled during the Angus Convention, Nov. 5-7, in Indianapolis, Ind. Continuing Growth, Angus Hires HR Director American Angus Association welcomes Ladena Keuhn as the organization s human resources director. The American Angus Association has served the nation s quality-minded cattle producers for more than 130 years, and managing day-to-day business requires a talented group of professionals across a number of disciplines. Ladena Keuhn, a native of north central Missouri, joined the Angus team Aug. 11 to lead the memberdriven organization s human resource programs and initiatives. Keuhn brings nearly 20 years experience in human resources management, training and development, employee relations, recruitment, corporate planning and benefits management. 17 Kansas Angus Auxiliary It is that time of year! Our Juniors are returning to the classroom and collegiate campuses. In many ways, September feels like the busiest time of the year: the kids go back to school, Fall calving commences, and Thanksgiving is suddenly upon us. As students of all ages return to school, we would like to remind you of the Kansas Auxiliary s current fundraising item. You may have seen the gorgeous black leather bracelets that many are donning throughout the barn. These items may be purchased through Mary McCurry for $30 and the proceeds will continue to allow the Auxiliary to provide scholarships for our Kansas Juniors. The experiences of the Junior Association makes it possible for our young men and women to access local, state and national scholarships. Be sure to watch the Auxiliary calendar as the National Angus Means Business Convention & Trade Show will be held November 5-7 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Highlights include the American Angus Auxiliary Annual Meeting on November 5th, the 65th Annual American Angus Auxiliary Breakfast and crowing of the next Miss American Angus, November 6th. We look forward to seeing you in Indiana! Megin O Brien President, Kansas Angus Auxiliary Juniors Apply for American Angus Auxiliary Certificate of Achievement Due Nov. 1 The Certificate of Achievement is issued only for outstanding achievements at national, state and district (tri-county) levels. County-level achievements are not eligible.
