President Richard Hatton Hello out there in Model Railroad land can t believe summer is almost over. TIME TO BUILD. Yep time to tackle new projects, visit layouts, poke fun at your friends etc. Hey, how many of you have checked out the new NFR website Check it out and tell your friends. We have added an interactive calendar so any one can submit a model railroad event so if you have or know of an event in your area, get it in there you can also upload a flyer fantastic. Next time you see Tim Warris please thank him for all his hard work. Also let your model train suppliers check out the advertising rates readily available on the website and fairly inexpensive. The perfect place for them to advertise their wares to the market they are looking for. We would appreciate your support. Let s not forget the Annual Convention coming up in the spring, it should be in this newsletter somewhere as well as appearing on our website. It s in Ottawa this year and they always put on a great show. Hope to see you at the Annual General Meeting. This is where you get to voice your opinion and help create the NFR the way you want it to be. Niagara Frontier Region Executive Reports To all the members out there we are rebuilding the Division AP chair and he will need some fair minded individuals to help him in evaluating layouts and projects. We want people that are fair minded and can work within the guidelines of the program. We are there to help and guide our members to be MMRs. We will be our regional AP chairs eyes and ears. Together we will be successful. That s it for now. 5 Allegheny Highlands Division Inactive Niagara Frontier Region Division Reports International Division Superintendent Richard Sparrow Central Ontario Division Superintendent Richard Hatton Hi everyone, summer is just about over and we will all be blowing the dust off our model rail projects, running our op sessions, model train shows etc. Just about anything that will keep us modeling. Speaking of modeling keep your eye on your as I will be sending the invites for the next modeling with?. because anybody can show up. What a great way to start your modeling season by sitting around with fellow railroaders and having a great day together doing what we love. As you may or may not have heard we are rebuilding the position of Regional AP chair. I need several volunteers willing to join me and go to people s homes to evaluate all their hard work. Also when we have meets and events we will be able to judge there as well. Our intent is to be fair as well as applying the parameters supplied to us. We are there to help, not criticize. If you wish to join me please me at moose_caboose@bell.net. Well happy modeling and see you at a train show near you. It has been a quiet summer ID activity-wise, but our Fall meet is coming up, and will be a little different to our past Meets. This will be a joint event with the Canadian Railroad Historical Association, (CRHA) Niagara Division, at the Welland Canal Lock 3 museum in St. Catharines. If you have never been to this location, it is awesome. Lock 3 is one of the 8 working locks on the Historic Welland Canal, that transition Great Lakes freighters and other lake traffic between Lakes Erie and Ontario a total height difference of 326. This saves them from having to go over Niagara Falls very messy! From the viewing platform right alongside Lock 3, you can watch the Great Lakes freighters rise or fall the 48 height difference of this lock. We recently had a planning meeting with the CRHA Executive to get the details of the event worked out, which are as follows: Date: October 3 rd, 2015 Time: 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Place: Lock 3 Museum, 1932 Welland Canals Parkway, St. Catharines, Ontario L2R 7K6 Admission: $5 for NMRA & CRHA Members, $7 for Guests The NFR Frontier Flimsy September 2015 Page 5

Introductions will start at 9:30 and will include short slide shows outlining each of the groups to members of the other group. Clinics: 1. Ken Akerboom NMRA The Boston & Maine, a bit of history, a bit of geography, some equipment, and a few oddities 2. Chuck Faist & Walter Reid NMRA Estate Planning and Risk Management for Model Railroaders 3. Dr. Andy Panko CRHA & NMRA Steam Railroading in the Niagara Area As always we will have model display tables. One for the Popular Choice contest where you can win prizes (remember the models you bring cannot have won prizes in previous ID or NFR contests), and a table for display only, where you can show other modelers what you have done recently, or are working on at the time. There will also be a silent auction and other opportunities to win prizes. We are arranging for 2 or 3 layouts in the area to be open for the afternoon. Coffee, tea, bottled water, and snacks will be provided with donations encouraged. (We understand that one of the members of the CRHA will be bringing some homebaked goodies - yeh!) Final details will be included in the September edition of the International Division newsletter, the Cinder Cruncher. Watch for it in your in-box. Our Spring 2016 Model Railroading Event is still in the planning stages, and will most likely be in Mississauga in late March or early April. We welcome any questions, comments or suggestions that you may have for the ID. links are on the ID website at nfr-nmra.org/id and my phone number is on the masthead of this newsletter. Looking forward to seeing you at Lock 3 in October, until then - play safe. St. Lawrence Division Superintendent Peter Gray Hello NFR, I hope everyone is ready for another great train season. This year the SLD is making changes to our travel plans so we can reach more modelers. It is not so much that we are trying to grow our membership, rather we are trying to reach more modelers and help them enjoy the hobby more. Not only have we had good success in Kingston, but also along the St. Lawrence and Cornwall area. I hope to make our visits to these areas more regular. Others will detail the convention for this year so I will take a pass on that. Our clinic theme for this year is on building a wooden rolling stock kit. I will say that my focus has shifted to being 100% on the SLD, as I have resigned as Contest Chair. Page 6 The NFR Frontier Flimsy September 2015

I hope to make this year we grow in visibility by attending more shows, even with the very unfortunate loss of OTE, growing our presence outside of Ottawa core and spreading our message of helping model railroaders enjoy the hobby more. That's all for now, Cheers Lakeshores Division Superintendent Raymond Howard The Lakeshores Division didn t have a formal activity this summer. Decided to take a rest after hosting Mortimer Junction We did have a couple small picnics to get together the Convention Committee and those that had their layouts open for viewing. Gave us a chance to see the great layouts that we didn t have a chance to see because we were rather busy that weekend. We are working on a Fall Meet but still waiting to see if the location is available. I will send out in formation about it just as soon as it is set! More information can be found at: Southern Tier Division Superintendent Robert Hamilton Western Ontario Division Superintendent Steve Juranics It s been a quiet summer in the WOD, but we have been making plans for a fall meet/clinic. This will be our first meet in Southwestern Ontario in many years. It is set for Saturday November 28 th at St. Joseph s Church (184 Wellington St.) in Chatham Ontario. On the docket are a bring and brag, swap/for sale tables, a scenery presentation, and a slide show on Steam and Early diesels in the Chatham/Kent/Essex corridor. After the meet, four layouts in the Chatham area, plus the Chatham Railroad Museum, and a Sarnia area layout will all be open for viewing. This is a rare opportunity to view these layouts as there are no annual layout tours in this area. The NFR Frontier Flimsy September 2015 Page 7

Achievement Program Chairman Peter Nesbitt Niagara Frontier Region Officer Reports Given the nice summer weather we have had, it is no surprise that there has been no activity since the convention in Rochester. But summer will soon be over and we start to work on model railway activities again. Of course, the outdoor enthusiasts have likely been busy during the nice weather. Next year s NFR convention will be in Ottawa and the fall would be a good time to start working on one or two models to bring to the convention. I expect that the convention will have the popular vote / display model area as well as the judged contest. It would be nice to fill the contest room! This is also a great time to have your models evaluated for a Merit award. Some models can t be brought to the contest and the judging has to be done on site. This can be easily arranged. When ready, all you have to do is contact me or your Division AP Chairman. If you have questions regarding any aspect of the Achievement Program or how to go about getting started on a certificate, please feel free to contact me. 9 The Algonquin Turn The 2016 NFR Spring Convention Friday May 6 to Sunday May 8, 2016 The St. Lawrence Division extends a warm invitation to one and all to attend the 2016 Spring NFR Convention, the Algonquin Turn in early May The Ottawa area encompasses many fine attractions and activities for the average visitor but it will excel in presenting a breadth and depth of model railroading to the NMRA membership should they make the journey to our end of the world. Activities of the convention will be centred at the Campus of Algonquin College of Applied Arts and Technology located at the intersection of Baseline road and Woodroffe Avenue, which offers a modern environment, good highway connections for visitors arriving from outside the city as well as a reasonably central location for excursions and layout tours. The campus has on-site accommodation available within easy walking distance of the convention venues in modern style residence suites. As in any current centre of higher education, Algonquin College offers fully equipped venues for clinics, presentations and the AGM. The Saturday evening Banquet will be catered by the College s hospitality training program, so an excellent meal will be a given. The format for the event is still under development but will include clinics, layout tours, ops sessions, model display and contest room, time to mingle and meet with friends old and new, and of course the official NFR AGM. The convention web site at algonquinturn.ca that will fill out and expand to provide as much information to perspective attendees as possible as it becomes available. It is also expected that we will be able to accept on-line registration and payment via PayPal. Future issues of the Frontier Flimsy will present registration details, clinic and layout teasers. 10 Easy Strip Led Passenger Car Lighting By Chris Lyon Introduction Recently I had the pleasure to talk to Jack Scott and Blake Lines about passenger car lighting. I had noticed that his Walthers cars had such a prototypical look. The colour, brightness and evenness of the lighting were just what I needed. I asked him how he did it and he indicated that he was using LED strip lighting. This lighting can be quite expensive if you don t shop around as many retailers are marking an 8 foot roll around $50. Now if you go on Ebay you will find sellers that will sell you a 5 meter roll for about $3.00 including shipping. DCC Lighting Generally the idea is you want to take AC track power (12-14 Volts) and convert it to 12 Volts DC. You use a Bridge Rectifier to do this. The next thing you want to do is eliminate any flicker. So you need an onboard way to keep the charge to the LEDs continuous and full. For this a capacitor is used. The bigger the capacitor the longer it will hold a charge on the lights. Finally, you use a resistor to reduce the voltage so the lighting is dimmed to the proper level; the bigger the resistor (the more ohms) the dimmer the lights. Example Sources for Materials Roll 12 Volt LED Strip Lighting Ebay seems to be the cheapest source for strip lighting Waterproof-Non-Waterproof-12V-60LED-M- / ?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&var=&hash=item1c3ef72342 Page 10 The NFR Frontier Flimsy September 2015

Bridge Rectifier Bridge Rectifiers can be sourced in many places. I got mine from a friend Blake Lines who bought in bulk from (Newark) Core&mckv=sstkSY7hp pcrid plid &gclid=cncxwo GChsYCFYM5aQodqzQAjA They come in strips and are about 20 cents each. I got the tiny surface mount ones through a friend in Ottawa who is a HOTRAK member (Blake Lines). Acceptable ratings are RS# FWB-15 (1.5 amp 400 volt). You will have to get this number for the mini from Blake Lines. Capacitor Capacitors for my projects were 1000uF (45 cents each) or you can use smaller ones and they take up less space at 470uF. I sourced these the same way though Blake Lines and Newark. I am sure any electronics store has them. The NFR Frontier Flimsy September 2015 Page 11

Resistors Resistors are a personal choice. I really wanted mine to be subdued so the 10K ohm was used (for a single car with 30 LEDs. If you want brighter you can put in 5Ks; these are about 15 cents each. The one I used is referenced as Dale 1416J RN60D 1002F WIRE, HEAT SHRINK & SOLDER The wire should be of two colours so that you can keep your positive and negative straight. Stranded is best at 30 gauge. You should also have smallest size heat shrink to ensure the wires and components are insulated. Solder should be small and appropriate for electronics: flux to help solder flow and an iron that has a very hot small tip. Also consider buying in bulk as the more you buy the cheaper these items get. The Car Assembly To open the cars you need to get the roof off. In some brands they are held in place with tabs. For example in the case of Walthers, by gently twisting the car body the car roof tabs will separate from the car and it will open. In other brands, screws will need to be removed. Now check the car to see if track power is provided from the wheel sets through the trucks into the car. I am using the Walthers example, as this is what I am demonstrating here. A stainless steel strip provides electrical continuity to two tabs inside the car. In others it could be wires to the trucks etc. Make sure the wheel polarities are opposite or it will short later (Insulation wheels on opposite sides at each at each car end). Look at the car interior and see how it is arranged inside. Some are open. In other cars compartments exist, or levels in observation coaches and in baggage cars there may be just a few doors that need lighting. The windows and interior determine the LED arrangement. In my example, it is an open coach. So, now what do we do? Page 12 The NFR Frontier Flimsy September 2015

The LED Strip Do not stick the lights into the car roof yet. This is last step In my strip lighting the lights are set in groups of three and are separated by copper tabs. For this car I could string 15 lights down the centre of the car. In others such as a baggage car, I used two sets of three over the doors and in compartment style sleepers. I used two strips of 15 down each side of the roof providing a light for each compartment or corridor. These sections were connected by wire cut to fit via the copper tabs. If the lights are to be installed in groups of three cut through the middle of the copper tabs to separate them and join with appropriate length wires ensuring the polarities are consistent. In this case, we are dealing with 15 LEDS on one strip for this article. Cut the strip at the copper tabs. Just cut them in half so you have solder points for the next led strip install. You will notice that the strip has a positive and negative side (it is marked). Tin the two tabs at the end where the components will go (on the right in the photo). Next tin the four leads on the bridge rectifier, 2 leads of the capacitor and two ends of the resistor. You can cut down the length of the terminals or bend the capacitor and resistor tabs to your needs for installation. Next is the wiring. Wiring: Step by Step Cut lengths of wire as you go.do not do them all at once. You want the spacing to facilitate fit to the car and the ability to separate the roof from the body so you can add details or do maintenance. This will ensure there is no waste and the components will be joined evenly and fit well. NOTE: Tin both ends of your wires before attaching them. First Step: Resistor & LED Strip I first soldered the resistor to the LED strip at the positive (+) Lead. Then I soldered the wire to the other end of the resistor. In my example, I use one colour of wire for positive (Yellow). The NFR Frontier Flimsy September 2015 Page 13

Then I soldered wire (purple) to the LED strip negative (-) tab. I slipped heat shrink over the resistor lead connection to ensure electrical isolation. To melt the shrink using the side of the soldering iron and run it back and forth over both sides until it is tight.. I test the LEDs with a 9volt battery (DC) to see if the lighting level is OK. Slip a piece of shrink over the purple and yellow wires sized so that it will cover the capacitor terminals. Leave it loose so it can be slipped over the terminals later. Set this work aside. Have a sip of your coffee. Second Step: Add Capacitor Next I soldered the positive (yellow LED strip wire) to the Positive capacitor terminal. Then the purple LED wire to the negative terminal. (KEEP PLUS + TO PLUS AND MINUS TO MINUS) OR YOU WILL BLOW THE CAPACITOR. You can identify the negative by the large minus images on the capacitor. Now you should have a colour coded yellow wire link between the capacitor to resistor and to LED Strip on the positive side. Also a purple LED strip wire connected to the capacitor s negative terminal. Also you have two pieces of heat shrink ready to slip over the capacitor. Do not shrink it on yet, Third Step: Bridge Rectifier Look at the Bridge rectifier. Tin all four leads. Look closely at it and you will notice two leads on one side have no markings. The polarity of these connecting points do not matter as these are the AC inputs from the track power through the car wiring. The other two are clearly marked (one positive (+) and one negative (-). These are the DC leads that will go to the capacitor. Solder a yellow and purple wire to the AC unmarked leads. Make sure the length of these wires allows for good separation of the roof from the body of the car. Now on the DC side, solder a yellow wire to the positive (+) lead and a purple wire to the negative lead (-). Put heat shrink over all 4 leads to insulate bare wires. Page 14 The NFR Frontier Flimsy September 2015

Fourth Step: Making the Connection Now connect the Bridge Rectifier to the Capacitor. Solder the Yellow wire from the positive DC lead of the Bridge Rectifier to the positive (+) capacitor terminal. Then solder the purple wire from the negative DC lead on the Bridge Rectifier to the negative (-) capacitor terminal. Then slip loose shrink on wires between the capacitor and the LEDs over the terminals and wires then heat shrink isolating any bare wires or connectors at the capacitor. Connect the two AC lead wires to the 9volt battery and test. Remove the connection and ensure the LEDs are still lit. This lets you know the Capacitor is working well. Then put wires to opposite battery terminals and do it again. The LEDs will light again proving that the bridge rectifier converts the AC to DC and the whole circuit is done properly. Here is a diagram of the final electrical circuit Congratulations More Coffee The NFR Frontier Flimsy September 2015 Page 15

Getting the Lighting into the Car Now is the time to take the backing off the LED Strip lighting. Do not touch the sticky stuff as it weakens its hold later. Start at the end farthest from the circuit and make your way toward the circuit end pressing down as you go. Do it only once. It is peel and stick not peel and stick peel and stick repeat. If you are like me and you do not want it to lift, I start with a bead application of clear silicone caulking down the car where the lights go and I press the light strip into it and then let it dry. This is not going to lift later. Next I solder the wires from the circuit to the car lighting truck wires or tabs. The tabs are stainless steel so they will not accept solder. I used small female disconnect plugs to solve this. I cut off the insulated end and crimp half of the plug with pliers. Then I feed the open end onto the tab and push it in to get a tight fit. Then melt some solder onto the crimped plug in the groove so it flows in and around the tabs. This tightens it more and provides a surface to solder the wires and maintain good electrical contact. Next I place the capacitor either in the vestibule, windowless end of car compartment or car floor carefully pushing the wires between it and the bridge rectifier down and out of site. You can use double sided tape to aid holding it into place. Test the car on the track before replacing the roof. When happy reassemble the car. I carefully fold the wires between the bridge rectifier and the car electrical tabs until the roof is flush with the car body. I line up the roof and press the plastic roof tabs of the car into the body slots. For the other models this is a screw or other attaching mechanism. Page 16 The NFR Frontier Flimsy September 2015
