Niagara Frontier Region Executive Reports President Richard Hatton Hello out there in model railroad land. The modeling season is upon us time to hunker down, hide in the basement and work on your railroad. All things going well I should have enough of the basement done in the new house to start the bench work on my new layout. Things have been busy. We held a Board of Directors meeting in early August which led to the AGM in Barrie on October 1 st and with all the things that were going on in the NFR that weekend we managed to have a good turn out. The BOD recommended some election changes and all were accepted. Keep your eye on the NFR website, as soon as the changes have been checked for accuracy it will posted for your reference. We will be holding the next BOD in January, our main focus is going to be Conventions and how to come up with a format to ensure we have a regular annual convention. If you have any ideas or suggestions send them to at moose_caboose@bell.net, your input is appreciated. The next AGM is being held in Sudbury during the convention. This gives us one more reason for everyone to attend. They are doing a great job of preparing for this convention. Let s show them our support with a good turn out. As you may or may not have heard, the NMRA has made a turn to the grassroots of the organization. Meaning that they realized that the divisions are the basis on where new members and long time members are generated. Please if you have any suggestions or ideas send them to me or you division superintendent. We need and respect you opinions. Well I have tied up too much of your time so. Please drive safe through the holiday season. We don t want any of that newly gotten stash damaged now do we? I wish you and yours a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Good health to you and your family. Let s not forget all those special treats that only come out at this time of year. American Vice President Bill Estes Canadian Vice President Clark Kooning Niagara Frontier Region Division Reports Allegheny Highlands Division Inactive Central Ontario Division Superintendent Richard Hatton How are we all doing out there? Hope we are having thoughts of joy during this holiday season. I wish good health and happiness to all. Now that we are focusing on divisions and ways to support them we need people in the divisions to send us feedback. Since the amount of territory the COD has, it has been decided that we need more than 1 person to manage the territory. This will cut down the travel and give better representation to our members in the COD. To do this we need 3 volunteers to help us with this and the areas that we would like to see Supervisors in are; 1. Peterborough Belleville 2. Muskoka Simcoe County corridor The NFR Frontier Flimsy December 2011 Page 3

Once the positions are filled we will define the areas a little finer. We would expect that the 3 supervisors work together so we don t have conflicting weekends to ensure that COD members from anywhere can still attend your meet, clinic whatever. If you are interested please me at moose_caboose@bell.net Again have a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, good health to you and yours. See you at a train show near you. International Division Superintendent Richard Sparrow Well, another summer season has sped by and soon we can get back down to the basement for a few months good modeling time. The ID started off the new season with our Fall Meet, held on October 22 nd in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Clinics were given by Robert Langlois on lots of neat ideas for working with LEDs and by yours truly on making control panel graphics with Microsoft Excel. Generous door prizes were donated by local hobby shops and clinician Robert Langlois who kindly donated a thumb drive. Congratulations to Barry Kelly for 1 st place in our Popular Choice model contest with his scratch built HO scale TH&B caboose. A big thank you to our open layout owners, Will Boyle, Stan Conron, Steve Pirosko and Ron Pullano for opening up their homes, and for the extra work they put in to get ready for us. Reports from the owners on the number of visitors they saw tell us that this is a popular feature of our Meets. We also held elections for ID officers at the October Meet, and as Harvey McIntyre was interested in stepping down, I put my name forward for Superintendant. This was the only nomination Page 4 The NFR Frontier Flimsy December 2011 received and so I have now assumed that role. The rest of the officers remain as before. On behalf of the ID membership, I would like to thank Harvey for the last 6 or 7 years as Superintendant, guiding the Division through many successful Meets, and other activities. I know that during my term I will be relying on advice and support from Harvey as Immediate Past Superintendant, (he knows everyone!!), and from the other officers and ID members. Our Executive monthly breakfast meetings have continued through the summer, and as you will see below, thanks to George Ziemer for his work setting up the contacts, we have already got the Spring 2012 meet pretty well finalised. We have also started the early planning for the Fall 2012 Meet. The ID Spring Meet will be held on March 10 th, 2012 at the Dundas Museum at 139 Park St W. in Dundas, ON. Postal Code for GPS travellers is L9H 1X8. Registration starts at 9:00 a.m. and the meeting will get underway at 9:30 a.m. Clinics will be: 1. The history of switchers, by Bob Rivers. 2. Excavating, landscaping and stocking a pond, by George Ziemer The agenda will include door prizes and our Popular Choice model contest with cash prizes. Clinician Bob Rivers is also one of the home layouts open for visiting in the afternoon. The other two are those of John Jukes and David Lee. All 3 layouts are HO scale. We welcome any questions, comments or suggestions that you may have for the ID. links for all the Executive members are shown on our website at nfr-nmra.org/id and my phone number is on the masthead. Lakeshores Division Superintendent Raymond Howard The Lakeshores Division held a Fall Meet at the Lehigh Valley RR Museum in Shortsville, NY

October 22 nd. The meet was well attended with about 40 members and guests in attendance. The morning session had 3 great clinics. Guy Wicksall gave a clinic called Color Lehigh Valley about the color variations found on Lehigh Valley equipment often based on what they had on hand that day. Ron Stacy gave a clinic on How to make your own coal loads. It was very appropriate for the day since the Lehigh Valley was a coal hauling RR. Ned Spiller, MMR gave a clinic called Operations on a small Layout featuring his Danby, Ludlow, and Springfield RR. The meet featured a Modelers Choice model contest that had over 20 entries. First place was won by Dave Mitchell for his Rayonier Loco, Second place went to Jim Dierk s beautiful Passenger Car set, and a tie for third place went to Mike Pyszek s Lehigh Valley #317 and Gordon Spalty s diesel critter loco. A silent auction was held for a donated large laser kit. The auction was won by Dick Senges. There were also many door prizes donated by members given out to the membership. Two NMRA Achievement Program Certificates were presented to Richard Senges by Harold Russell Richard (aka: Dr. Dick) has earned his Model Railroad Engineer Electrical, and his Association Volunteer Certificates. Congratulations! Two layouts were open for the afternoon tours. Guil Mack s huge (1800 sq. feet) Tiger Valley Railroad was open as was Ray Howard s Seneca Lake, Ontario, & Western RR. Fun was had by all! We provided a Modeler s Corner at the Batavia Train Show on November 13 th that included a slide show of photos of several of our member s layouts. We will also be holding a Modeler s Corner at the RIT Tiger Tracks Train Show on December 10 th and 11 th. If you are there, be sure to stop over and say hi! Ontario Northland Division Superintendent Trevor Ross The 2011 Sudbury Train and Hobby Show was once again a great success with many vendors and layouts in attendance this year. This is the primary annual Model Railroad event in the Ontario Northland Division. Upcoming events in or near the OND include the Barrie Train Show on February 18 and 19, and the Midland Model Railway Show in May. The 2012 NFR convention is fast approaching, and we hope to have you all join us in Sudbury for this event. See the articles elsewhere in this issue of the Flimsy, and additional information can be found on the website at or you can search for Sudbury Saturday Night Express on Facebook. We are actively looking for additional individuals to present clinics at the convention, so if you are planning to attend the conference and would be willing to present a clinic please contact me. From the other divisional updates in the Flimsy I know that there have been many great clinics presented over the past year. If you have any questions, comments, or suggestions for the OND you can contact me at trevor@tjrcadd.com or (705) St. Lawrence Division Superintendent Ron Newby Another season has begun and we started with a trip to Montreal in September. Although I heard murmurs about it being run with military precision, we did get to see four great layouts and two hobby shops and still managed to get back by 6:00 PM. Everybody seemed to enjoy it and a lot of positive things about the trip were heard. The theme of this year s kitbusters clinics is building a cardstock building and we held our first session of the season in October and that about 20 people showed up. I manage to see a clinic on building cardboard buildings at the narrow gauge convention this year and with today s technology, today s cardboard buildings are cheap and can be put in foreground scenes, they are that good. At our November meet we will be having a clinic on weathering freight cars by Peter Grey and a The NFR Frontier Flimsy December 2011 Page 5

clinic on rolling stock maintenance by yours truly. At this time I would also like to invite any member of the NFR s BOD to come to one of our meetings and see what we are about. In fact I would like to open up the invitation to anyone in the NFR. If you are in the area come visit us. If you would like to know our schedule it can be found at Hope to see you soon. Western Ontario Division Superintendent John Moseley Hope everyone had a great holiday season and till next time, may your train stay on the track and may you never run out of rail. Southern Tier Division Robert Hamilton Niagara Frontier Region Officer Reports Achievement Program Chairman Peter Nesbitt I m pleased to advise of the following Achievement Programme activity since my last report. Achievement Certificates: John Mosely Official Congratulations John for your fine accomplishment! Keith Lebold Historian I would like to thank Ron Einarson, Clair Rutter, John Kanakos and Richard Sparrow for their recent contributions to the Archives. Best Wishes everyone for the upcoming holiday season. Til Page 6 The NFR Frontier Flimsy December 2011

The SLD s Model Railroading 101 Program The Raffle Layout Conclusion! By Grant Knowles, MR101 Chairman Photos by Grant Knowles It s been a number of months since my last progress report on the SLD s Model Railroading 101 program. Our current focus has been on the Railfair 2011 CHEO Raffle Layout build as we prepared it for the Oct 15/16 Railfair show followed by the ultimate exciting delivery to the lucky winner! After the track was laid, the summer months were dedicated to building the numerous structures, creating the scenery and adding the details to bring it to life. Sounds simple enough, but ask our newer members as they will certainly agree, it has been a learning experience all the way along. Fortunately we were able to adhere to our bi-weekly work sessions that helped to keep us moving forward along with providing a theme for each session when we focused on a particular item. E.g. wiring, ballasting, trees, land forms, etc. Our newer members: Steve, Ed and David, were always keen to take on these challenges and certainly rose to the occasion. Remember though our over all objective was to build a stellar layout, the first objective was to assist the newer members with building up new skills. Over the summer months we addressed: Track installation & adjustments, Back drop painting Track wiring Structure assembly as per the instructions and kit bashed Road and crossing installation Scenery build out Styrofoam, celluclay, ground foam, etc Tree fabrication and installation Bench construction Painting (just about everything) Chris Lyon is using a cellulclay mixture (celluclay / white glue / water) to rough in the hillside and roadways over a Styrofoam base. The celluclay remains wet for a few days allowing time to fine tune the contours, carve rack faces, plant trees and apply ground foam as Mike Hamer is doing in this photo. We also had a steady rotation of other SLD members coming out to help when they were available so we Page 8 The NFR Frontier Flimsy December 2011

were never short bodies and there was lots of opportunity to try something new. As the layout contains a fair number of structures (25 +), these were handed out to volunteers to build outside the work sessions. We had a mix of plastic and craftsman kits, some were built as is, others required kit bashing to fit their specific locations. Members often brought their in progress work to the work sessions to table questions they had and seek guidance on the next steps. This approach worked very well as the by product of this effort has produced some stellar structures. It s now late November and I m pleased to announce the 2011 Railfair Raffle layout was not only completed but was completed in time for Railfair with time to spare! (rare occurrence!) Hats off to all involved to transform the dream and plan into reality. Structures were assembled by the club members outside the bi-weekly work sessions. Here Grant Knowles illustrates his dedication to the program through building his structures while on the family camping trip! The layout, legs and accessories fit comfortably in a minivan and was quickly delivered and set up at Railfair. The layout saw a steady flow of traffic over the weekend with over $1,600 raised for CHEO. Many seasoned model railroaders were heard to exclaim this was the best raffle layout yet and proceeded to purchase tickets when they realized the layout contained so many craftsman structures. Ultimately the layout was won by a young family in Vars. Their young son, Jacob, helped us unload and set up the layout and no doubt will be thrilled to operate the layout for years to come. Ron Newby kit bashed the General Store from a Rail Scale Miniatures Craftsman kit to fit the available space. Further information regarding the construction of this layout can be found in two sites on the web: The Railroad Line Forum contains numerous articles and threads authored by many very talented model railroaders from around the world. We have documented the Raffle Layout build in its entirety though this thread: Railroad Line Forum ( The Rutter Rubber Company was built by Debbie through stretching the Bent Chair Company kit that was donated by Full Steam Ahead. The NFR Frontier Flimsy December 2011 Page 9

This forum has generated interest from as far away as Australia and South Africa! The second web site is the SLD Club's site. Here we have a section devoted to the build. On a closing note, one of the key benefits of building the Raffle Layout is that it gave us the opportunity to share our knowledge in the hobby with our fellow members and to provide the opportunity to practice what we have learned. Though this is the last year for the Railfair show (and Raffle Layout) we are looking forward to future SLD educational programs to grow the knowledge and excitement of the hobby for the current and future members. I want to thank all those who have participated in the build all the way from making donations, to investing their effort and offers of opinions. Without this investment, we wouldn t have been able to build this wonderful layout in so quickly. A close up view of the industrial area. Dave Primeau built the freight house (left) while Grant Knowles kit bashed the remaining buildings. This coal dock was kit bashed from a Hunter Line Trestle kit by Grant Knowles. The left over parts were used to build a traditional trestle on the other side of the layout. The St Lawrence Hotel is also a Full Steam Ahead kit. Extensively modified by Lorne Munroe to fit the triangular space between the tracks. Page 10 The NFR Frontier Flimsy December 2011

The final step was to engage everyone with cleaning the track (dreaded job) and running the trains (finally!) to ensure all was ready for Railfair. There was a steady flow of admirers at Railfair. SLD members were close by to talk with the visitors and table any and all inquiries. A Model Railroader s dream a large empty basement! The family had just moved into a new home and hadn t filled up the basement so we quickly claimed the floor space for the future railroad empire! Here Jacob and his dad become acquainted with the layout in its new home. Mike Hamer reviewed the layout s details and operations with the new owners to ensure they got off to a good start. 13 Sudbury Saturday Night Express 2012 NFR Convention Workshop and Clinic Overview The planning committee for the Sudbury Saturday Night Express convention is hard at work organizing a great line-up of activities for the convention weekend. The last issue of the Flimsy contained a summary of the Home layout and Industry Tours planned for the convention weekend. The other primary activities during the convention are the workshops and clinics. In this issue of the Flimsy we have put together a summary of some of the Workshops and Clinics that are currently planned. Clark Kooning, MRR Building your own Turnouts Using Fast Track In this fast paced clinic Clark Kooning, MMR will demonstrate how to build a turnout using the Fast track products. You will see how easy it is to scratchbuild your own handlaid turnouts with the product. No tricks and its easy as 1,2,3 so come and see this fast paced clinic and remember when you have Clark doing a clinic with Fast Tracks you always have a good turnout! Clark Kooning, MRR Introduction to building in Styrene Have you ever wondered how to build and use styrene for your modeling? Well here is a great hands on clinic to introduce you to using styrene. In this hands on clinic you will build a small portable cattle ramp out of strip styrene, the tips and tricks of using this material will be taught to you by our own Clark Kooning, MMR. Clark will take you thru all the basics of building in styrene and then each student will build a small cattle ramp using your new knowledge with the help of Clark. At the end of this clinic you will get to take your new model home with you along with the skills to try other projects in Styrene. Attendees for this clinic must register ahead of time (included on the convention registration form), and there is a small cost - we will supply all the styrene and plans. In addition, attendees must bring a small assortment of tools and accessories. A detailed list will be supplied to all who register for the clinic. (limited to 24 students and must be 18yrs or older) Al Crisp, MMR Piggy Backs of the 1950 s Dale Wilson The Algoma Eastern This clinic will present a largely visual history of "The Algoma Eastern Railway - Sudbury's Own Railway" using images collected from the railway's history. This particular railway serves as a good example of some of the 'railway dreams' common in this country in the late 19th and early 20th century. Trevor Ross DCC A to Z The content for this clinic will be adjusted according to the desires of the audience in attendance. Topics of discussion could include the basics of DCC for beginners to more advanced discussions on topics such as troubleshooting, wireless control, decoder installation, computer control and programming, and sound. We are still actively looking for additional individuals to present clinics during the convention. If you are interested in presenting a clinic please contact Trevor Ross at or trevor@tjrcadd.com The NFR Frontier Flimsy December 2011 Page 13

There is no official non-rail program planned as part of the convention; however there are many local points of interest for attendees and companions to enjoy during your visit to Sudbury. The convention hotel is located adjacent to the Sudbury rail yards. The sounds of passing trains and yard locomotives can be heard continuously during the day. Science North is one of the primary tourist attractions in Sudbury. It includes the Science Center as well as the Imax Theatre and various motion theatres. The Big Nickel and Dynamic Earth are another great attraction featuring displays on the history of the development of Sudbury and local mining as well as an underground mine display. Sudbury also has plenty of great shopping and other areas of interest such as Bell Park on beautiful Ramsey Lake and A.Y. Jackson High Falls, a popular spot of the Group of Seven painters. Many other rail related industries exist throughout the city. Convention attendees will receive a list and map of these locations. We are excited to have you all join us for a Sudbury Saturday Night. We encourage you to visit the website at where you will find additional details of the layouts and clinics as we further develop the convention details. Registration is now open, and the registration form is included elsewhere in this edition of the flimsy, or at the website. Come and take a ride on the Sudbury Saturday Night Express.
