Niagara Frontier Region Executive Reports President Richard Hatton Hello everybody I m here just off the Grand River Express. All had a good time. My complements to the many volunteers that made this happen. I know they put in long hours and extra effort, and without the effort of volunteers many of our functions wouldn t be possible. So when attending events please take the time to thank the organizers or even better volunteer to help at the next event. Fresh ideas and extra hands are always welcome. Many hands make light work. WHAT DOES THE NMRA DO FOR ME I unfortunately got into this hobby late in life thanks to my father in-law. I never had a train set or went rail fanning. Never saw a home layout of any kind other than my father in-law s. My affliction started with old westerns with the train rolling in with governor s car at the end looking for your votes. (Some things never change) The steam train moving passengers from town to town, hell even Petticoat Junction had a train. All this and more sparked my interest in trains. I always liked modeling when I was young mostly plastic kits or paint by numbers so when my father inlaw got me interested in model trains I saw it as a way to start modeling again. I kicked around at different aspects for a few years and I could see the potential but really had no way of getting there. I attended many train shows and started showing interest at Craftsman Corners and admired the work they were doing and was amazed at the quality of work they were doing. Through my many visits I was encouraged to join in and join the group. So I filled in an application. I received a welcome package full of information with a promise to get in touch and let me know what was going on in my area. Then nothing. As I went to different shows I was always asked to come and join them at the Corner but was not very confident in my skill level and truth be told, a little intimidated by their skill level. Still nothing so I sent an to a representative of the NMRA something that would change my modeling for ever. I went to his house, met some other members (1 st time) and had an interesting conversation. What it boiled down to was the best way to enjoy this hobby you have to get involved. Not a truer statement was made. I then volunteered to sit at Craftsman s Corner and was scheduled for the Christmas Train show in Toronto. No pressure and no clue as what I was going to build while I sat there. I elected to build trees. Made a few practice trees and away I went. (Editor s note: for photos see Frontier Flimsy Vol. 51 No. 4 Dec 2005, page six.) What a great group of people they were helpful and very complementary. I still have some of those trees. I continued, and still attend craftsman corner. From this group I went to my first division meet, saw my first clinics and layout tour. Needless to say some of these layouts were intimidating especially compared to my 2x4 space at home. Next I went to a convention in Rochester enjoyed the clinics and went on the layout tour. Made it to my first location and never got past it. What an impression! They answered all my questions no matter how stupid, gave out pointers and ideas. I finally left in order to get back to the banquet had a fantastic time. I sat a table with members from the Ottawa area and was impressed when it was announced that they needed some place for the next year s Convention. They kind of had a group huddle and stood up and said they would do it. Wow impressive to a newbie. This convention made me say this is the hobby I want to be in and never looked back. The more things I did, the more people I met The NFR Frontier Flimsy June 2017 Page 3

the more I learned. Operating session what the hell is that? What is in Milwaukee? I could carry on forever about the benefits I have received since I joined the NMRA. I have met many friends, seen layouts I would never have seen and been to places I would never have been all because I stuck out my hand and said I ll help. I don t know if I can ever give back what I have received because every time I give back I meet more people and develop more friendships. The people you meet on this road are fascinating and their willingness to share is unprecedented anywhere. So I do what I can do to give back and hopefully someday the things I have learned from others can be passed on as gracefully to others ensuring I give recognition the friends that taught me. Getting involved is the best way to enjoy this hobby. So what happens if I do nothing? The NMRA is what I call the hobby police and they work hard with all the manufacturers to work to the same set of standards. This is why you can run your atlas engine on Peco track run by Digitrax using a TCM chip etc. You get the picture. They have digital archives that you can look up on line and print. Even though the manufacturers follow the standards agreed upon by all, they can still have their own special features to make them unique. If you don t think it s true, ever try to purchase a DCC system. So what one is best for you? It was just a few short years ago that someone tried to claim that they invented DCC. It was the NMRA s records that proved the case was unjustified keeping DCC affordable by all. You can look around and see many examples of this as well as working on new technology for the future. The NMRA as I said are doing a great job and supplying information and policing the hobby but to me the best thing the Page 4 The NFR Frontier Flimsy June 2017 NMRA has to offer is the many friendships you will gain and the fun you ll have by just putting up your hand and saying I ll help. ONLY THEN WILL YOU BEGIN TO ENJOY THE BEST PART OF THE ORGANIZATION. American Vice President Matt Bierl Canadian Vice President Tim Warris Secretary Vacant Tony Kerr Acting Treasurer Tony Kerr

Niagara Frontier Region Division Reports Allegheny Highlands Division Inactive Central Ontario Division Superintendent Richard Hatton Hello out there in model railroad land. Summer is just around the corner garden railways, rail fanning, and family vacation what a wonderful time of year. Well for those that didn t know we have a group of modellers that get together, bring whatever they are working on and spend a day with likeminded individuals enjoying the day modeling. We help those that need it, have great conversation but overall it s a great day. Our biggest problem has been space availability and affordability. Because of this our get-togethers have been inconsistent at best. We have now found a location that will enable us to establish consistency with this program. The space is at Lee Valley Tools at approximately highway 400 and Langstaff Ave. in Vaughan. All meets will be on a Sundays. We are setting up a schedule starting in September. We will try to establish a meet every two months as far ahead as they will let us. More good news. These meetings are open to any model railroader, they do not have to be a member of the NMRA but the cost will be the same $5.00 per meet to cover costs. So if you have a buddy or know of someone that would like to come and join us the by all means have him/her come along. In order to get the invitation to join us at this event I need your so that I can add them to the invitation list. The more the merrier. We in the NFR are here to promote the hobby and I think this is a great way to do that as well as meet new friends. So if you know someone that wishes to join in on our festivities have them send me an at moose_caboose@bell.net I would like to thank all the members that volunteer their time and energy to this hobby. Whether it organizing an event, participating in a layout tour, running operating sessions, sitting at modellers corner, whatever, I thank you. It is through your efforts that we enjoy the hobby even more. They never get the thanks they deserve so if you are at one of these events please ensure you thank the hosts. As I have found out, being willing to help or volunteer really enhances the enjoyment I get from the hobby within and outside the NMRA. I have been places, seen things and done things that would not be possible on my own, I have received more than I can give back from my membership in the NMRA. So if you really want to get full value of your NMRA membership, stick up your hand and say I ll help. What s the worst that can happen? You could meet new friends while spending the day with people like minded and there to have fun. The gift of giving. If you feel that you would like to participate more send me an at moose_caboose@bell.net That s all for now. Rick International Division Superintendent Richard Sparrow A little over 20 people took part in our Spring Meet at the Hamilton Museum of Steam and Technology on April 29 th. For the first clinic, the electronic control system in Ann & Barry Laxton s G scale switching demonstration layout was wonderful to see. Barry demonstrated how routes could be set, and most amazingly, how any two cars in a 5 car train could be remotely uncoupled using a modified BlackBerry as a controller totally magic to watch! The NFR Frontier Flimsy June 2017 Page 5

Russ Milland, President of the Golden Horseshoe Live Steamers club conducted the second clinic. The Museum is home to the club, and Russ took us through the history of the club, the range of model live steam equipment available commercially, the operation of a steam engine, and lots of information about the great variety of members locomotives. After lunch, Kristin Kerr, one of the Museum staff, took us on a guided tour of the facility, the hi-lite of which was the four-story pump house. Dual steam engines were used to drive two huge plunger pumps to take water from Lake Ontario, up to a reservoir on the Niagara Escarpment, (i.e. Hamilton Mountain) above the city of Hamilton, from where it was gravity fed to supply the city. The necessity to build the pump house and reservoir was brought about by a deadly Cholera epidemic in the mid 1850 s. Contaminated ground water was getting into the wells that were used to supply water to the inhabitants. Lake Ontario water on the other hand, was at that time relatively clean. After the tour, we were able to talk with several of the Live Steamers club members who had equipment running both inside on a G Scale circuit, and outside. Some attendees also took rides! Many thanks to Barry and Ann Laxton, and to Russ Milland and all the GHLS club members for their help and participation in the Meet. 8 St. Lawrence Division Superintendent Chris Lyon I had the privilege along with a number of other SLD folks to attend the Ops til you drop 2017 gathering in Syracuse NY. I enclosed the schedule so folks could see how these programs are put together. A fun overnighter gave each participant a chance to operate three layouts and socialize with members from across a number of NMRA Divisions and Regions. The hosts were great and several were MMRs whose skill and leadership was very evident over the sessions. Lela, Doug and I had fun operating at Mike Shanahan s HO Pennsylvania RR, Dave Martini s CSX and Bill Brown s UP. We had a great time. The Grand River Express was a great experience which, despite the wet weather, enabled me to combine some railfanning, clinic presentations and of course meeting old friends to share time and experiences with. These sort of events always give a jolt to system and encourage me to dig into some new project with renewed vigor. The SLD held the last gathering of the season on May 27 th in Kingtson Ontario with the Associated Railroaders of Kingston. Tim Kuhlmann graciously offered to be our host and clinic coordinator. We met at St James Church, 10 Union Street West from 9am to 1pm. The only significant business was the election of Malcom Vant as Assistant Superintendent to replace Bill Meredith who had to step down from the position. I would like to thank Bill Merideth for his much appreciated assistance and we all sincerely hope all goes well for him and hope Page 8 The NFR Frontier Flimsy June 2017 to see him again soon at SLD. There were two great clinics, and Bob Farqhaur explored his experiences with static grass and other grass type ground covers, and Andrew Jeanes illustrated why we should all be modeling the Kingston and Pembroke railway. Afternoon layout tours included Kurt Vollenwyder, John Licharson, David Lay and Andrew Chisholm s. It is always a pleasure to look closely at models that represent such an investment of time and skill in their construction. This year we had 10 judges plus alternates; John Moseley, Angus Palmer, Richard Hatton, Mike Walker, John Licharson, Steve Wright, Les Radvanyi, Richard Sparrow, Ed Haydon MMR, Murray Symington, Pat Rivard, and myself. Like so many of the other volunteers at the convention the judges give up convention fun time to take on this task. Their efforts are sincerely appreciated. 10 It Was Raining Like Cats and Dogs By Chris Lyon with Ron Newby Furthermore, the stations and yards were all located within an hour of the convention location and there was road access. Using Google maps locator we found the nearest street access so that we could pump it into the GPS. This saves time as we can produce the most expedient routes and formulate the daily plan and avoid getting lost. CP Cambridge Arriving in town at noon on my birthday. We decided to go to the nearest site to get our feet wet. And we did. It was raining like crazy. Of course what made it especially complicated was my first real big senior s moment at 65. I had left my raincoat at the Tim Hortons in Ottawa (My wife picked it up). However, I did have a golf umbrella to protect me from the deluge. Most CP trains run at night in this territory and there was nothing happening. Railfanning is like fishing. You enjoy the experience but there may be nothing that day. At the station we did see a few pieces of maintenance equipment but that was it. Gave us a good chance to examine the lighting and figure out the best settings for these conditions. This Year s NFR Convention was held at Conestoga College near Kitchener and Cambridge Ontario. The Grand River Express offered a great variety of model railroad related activities including clinics, layout tours, contests and excursions. I would like to add that my friend Ron Newby and I always railfan during these conventions. Always leaving a day early, this gives us ample opportunity to see what each location offers trackside. It all starts well before departure. Sitting at the home computer, we scan for any train operations near the convention. Starting with stations, yards, rivers, bridges, crossings and junctions. In this case, we identified CN, CP, VIA, Goderich-Exeter and Essex Terminal/Waterloo Central. Page 10 The NFR Frontier Flimsy June 2017

CN Brantford Well you can always rely on CN and VIA to be running something. We travelled down to Brantford. The VIA schedule showed us that we had missed the afternoon westbound by 15 minutes. The next eastbound was not going to be here before dark. We spoke with a local rail fan. He filled us in on good spots to go as well as provided a great deal of history as his dad was an employee with CN and had many photos of steam from the area that appeared in popular reference books. He said the Saint Jacobs local would be returning to the Brantford Yard so it would be worthwhile to stay. There was an advantage as we could park next to the platform out of the rain and observe the interlocking signals. Soon there was a yellow. However, a restricted speed meant that time went by and we were distracted. I suddenly looked west and there it was about 300 feet away and closing. We jumped from the car and with our hooded lenses pointed down, we ran for our shooting locations. The train had clearance into the next block, which would allow it to proceed past the lead yard switch. The NFR Frontier Flimsy June 2017 Page 11

The train was short and had a few loaded Gondolas, empty bulkhead flats and a covered hopper. Typical of industrial railroading on small Branches, the cars would be set out in the yard for a sweep to come by later and take them to their destinations. Sometimes in the worst of conditions you can capture a scene that says it all. The trainmen on this local were tired and soaked through. Easing back into the yard, they would classify the cars, set turnouts and uncouple. They had removed the heavy FRED and it looks like he could hardly wait to drop it. This scene really captures the kind of day it was on the railroad. Page 12 The NFR Frontier Flimsy June 2017

Seeing the Geep in this condition with all its rattling sounds was a treat. Well worth the days outing. Lucky engineer in his nice warm cab. DAY 2 G&E Stratford After a great evening at the Rabid Fox watching the Stanley Cup we rose early to maximize daylight trackside. Raining again, our enthusiasm did not waiver. On the way to Stratford, we stopped at a great little restaurant in Shakespeare and then on to the trains. The two-story station was amazing. Of course we just missed the morning VIA from Toronto to Montreal. There is a pattern here. Check the schedule! The NFR Frontier Flimsy June 2017 Page 13

The locomotives moved from the east end into a servicing location and the engineer and conductor were busy getting the power ready for the days run up to a local mine (salt I think) and then down to Toronto. Page 14 The NFR Frontier Flimsy June 2017

The Goderich Exeter is part of the Genesee and Wyoming Company and their Orange and Gold paint scheme is often seen throughout the USA and Canada. The NFR Frontier Flimsy June 2017 Page 15

There s always lots of snow because of the lake effect. A plow is a necessity. This repainted CN was a great find and we probably have seen it on many videos like plow extras. Well nothing was moving so again it was time to move on. Page 16 The NFR Frontier Flimsy June 2017

St Jacobs As part of the convention there was a steam excursion in St Jacobs. We decided to go up early and visit the museum shops and maybe see the locomotive being made ready before the entire crowd arrived. We caught the test run and yes, it was still raining heavily. We arrived in time to see the test run near the crossing at the market. The engineer stopped and I took a picture of Ron in front of this nicely maintained steamer. We then went to the shops and took some photos of their equipment: a saddle tank switcher, an Alco S3 and a GE 70 Tonner. The NFR Frontier Flimsy June 2017 Page 17

Brantford Again Having figured it out regarding VIA s schedule we had just over 30 minutes to get back down to Brantford. With traffic we got there about five minutes before the train arrived. Ha it is the Canada 150 th scheme. The first shot shows it slowing past the Gentleman s Cub and into the station. Page 18 The NFR Frontier Flimsy June 2017

This was a great opportunity to produce a cover shot. The rain lightened and the clouds were darkening before the next downpour. The yellow and grey looked great. The porter was a laugh. Helping the passenger in the pouring rain, she joked with me that I had been waiting all day to take her picture only to comment afterwards it is all about the trains no matter what the weather. The NFR Frontier Flimsy June 2017 Page 19

No sooner had the train departed the freights moved through the station first an eastbound double stack then a westbound auto carrier. All in all it was a great train day. I encourage conventioneers to take the opportunity to add rail fanning to your convention schedule. It provides for lots of fond memories. Even in the rain. Page 20 The NFR Frontier Flimsy June 2017

Notes from Your Editor I think this is my 50 th Frontier Flimsy as editor, the earliest version in my files is December 2005, I can t find a digital version of the September 2005 issue to be able to tell if it was mine as well. One of the challenges of putting this newsletter together is the lack of feedback from our audience. This could be a good thing if the Flimsy is so wonderful that there is no possible way to improve the product, or this could be an indication that no one ever actually reads the rag. So I am looking for some feedback, good bad or indifferent. This newsletter is fundamentally supposed to be a method of providing members of the region with information on the activities of the region, its members and the organization. Is it doing that for you? Are you looking to find more, less or do we have the appropriate balance? How do you actually read the Flimsy? Do you download it from the official NFR web site or the temporary NFR Flimsy website nfrflimsy.wordpress.com? Do you know there are two versions produced, a paper white printable version and a lower contrast screen friendly light grey version? So if you do read this and would drop me a note at Stanley_conley@rogers.com with your feedback, complaints, compliments, articles or whatever it would be appreciated.
