1 EDITION 67 - CHRISTMAS 2014 COLIN SAY & CO P/L ASCOT BULL SALE 2014 The Ascot Bull Sale conducted on Friday the 17 th of October achieved a 100% clearance for vendors Jim Wedge & Jackie Chard. A great result against a backdrop of poor seasonal conditions in most areas. The underlying theme of all stud sales this year has been the upbeat assessment of the beef industry when seasonal factors return to the positive. The main goal of producers now is to maintain a core herd and get to the other side. The Ascot bulls delivered well grown top shelf genetics and the clearance of 100% supports the determination of the vendors to offer mainly yearling bulls at the leading edge of the Charolais and Angus breed. The top price Angus bull will make the long road trip to Nampara Angus at Penola South Australia a Berkley son that sold to $13,000 while a $15,000 bid secured an outstanding Charolais sire prospect Ascot Western Spur a red factor bull off to Chippendale Pastoral Co Blackall Queensland. The Charolais bulls averaged $5017 while the Angus bulls averaged $5690. Jim Wedge was pleased with the sale clearance and indicated a larger draft of 50 Charolais and 50 Angus Bulls will be offered at the 2015 Ascot Sale. The presentation of the bulls and the outstanding facilities at North Toolburra are a credit to Jim and Jackie and their staff. The large number of registered bidders and onlookers enjoyed excellent hospitality. With astute breeders already looking forward to next year s select offering of outstanding genetics. 2 NEED DOG POWER? GET TO DUNDEE!! DUNDEE DOGS TOP AT $4450 RMA Network major sponsor THE third annual RMA Network Dundee Working Stock Dog Auction had a significant rise in entrants this year with 37 dogs on offer. The sale resulted in 31 of the working dogs sold for an average of $2233 and a top of $4450. Culgoa Morton, offered by Sam Gates from Kanika stud, Uralla, was the first dog in the ring and was purchased by Chris and Kelly Hoppe, Echo Deepwater, for the top price. Mr Gates said the pure-bred Kelpie had good working experience with both sheep and cattle. Morton worked mainly as a station dog but had also been used on contract mustering around the district. Purchasers Mr and Mrs Hoppe said they came to the sale to purchase a well-rounded dog to work their sheep and cattle. Prior to coming to the sale they watched a trial video of Morton and had him in mind for purchase. Colin Say and Co agent Shad Bailey said the sale was a great success and it was good to see such a high rise in entrants. Mr Bailey said the line-up of dogs was the best the sale had seen so far and buyer participation was well above expectation in such hard times. There were about eight new vendors who put dogs in the sale and the balance was made up by repeat vendors. Other high prices during the day included Keirs Nap, sold by Alan Rutter who went for $3650. Culgoa Nelpie was sold by Paul Young, Merriwa; Gwydir Tier was sold by Tony Overton, Walcha, and Buckol Working Dogs Chief was sold by Andrew McIntyre, Glen Innes, all for $4000. 7 65th Annual Breeder & Feeder Steer Sale 30th January am We invite you to sell your cattle with us, please contact: Nathan , Shad or Craig with particulars and details of your livestock to be offered for sale. This premier sale affords buyers an excellent opportunity to procure lines of steers, unjoined heifers, PTIC heifers and cows and calves. Historically the Breeders sale has been a reliable and proven sale, realising solid returns for repeat vendors. An awful start to spring will almost certainly increase numbers of sale cattle penned. The larger the penning the more attractive the offering will be to repeat and prospective buyers looking to purchase lines of tablelands bred cattle in forward store condition. Three factors come in to play, ensuring a strong sale outcome: 1. A new level of confidence in the live export market 2. Our lower dollar 3. A big contraction in saleable stock numbers should create a market surge going forward. Champion pens of steers and females will again be judged and already early bookings indicate some outstanding drafts of vendor bred cattle will come forward. To enable us to promote your cattle and accurately advertise descriptions please advise our sales team at your earliest convenience. Congratulations to 2014 Champion Pens CHAMPION HEREFORD STEERS WALMSLEY PARTNERSHIP CHAMPION HEREFORD FEMALES AC & JE ANDERSON CHAMPION ANGUS STEERS WALMSLEY PARTNERSHIP CHAMPION ANGUS FEMALES AC & JE ANDERSON We take this opportunity to wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Safe New Year. 8 RURAL PROPERTY WITH CRAIG THOMAS For information or an inspection phone or visit Craig Thomas of Colin Say & Co. together with David Nolan of Webster Nolan Real Estate Sydney, are pleased to offer anyone thinking of selling their rural property the complete marketing package. Both companies are members of the RMA NETWORK, and as a result can provide Australia wide coverage for your valuable asset. The Rural Marketing Agents Network (RMA) is the largest network of privately owned stock & station and real estate agents in Australia. The RMA network in Australia has over 140 offices with more than 750 active staff members. The members share the same code of ethics, skill sets and professional standards unsurpassed in the Livestock & Property sectors. Webster Nolan Real Estate has one of the biggest Australian & International data bases of any major rural real estate firm, together with additional proven marketing strategies. David Nolan is regarded as one of the leaders in rural property marketing throughout Australia. David has an extensive knowledge of the agricultural industry gained from over 30 years experience. His great passion and belief in rural Australia and his desire to deliver his valued clients successful sales has seen David sell a large number of significant rural properties in NSW, QLD, VIC, NT and SA. Rural Land Sales with a Livestock Perspective The season may be the worst in our short memory but a steady transfer of ownership on numerous properties has taken place post winter. While high profile properties in the big money bracket attract the headlines Colin Say & Co can report numerous sales of blocks in the million dollar range from areas at Glen Elgin, Red Range and Lambs Valley while small blocks in close proximity to Glen Innes continue to attract lifestyle and small acreage producers. When the seasons return and commodity prices escalate the market will most certainly rebound increasing values and justifying the price tag on our grass fattening area. Already an Aussie dollar trading in the mid 80 s should signal a change ahead on commodity values. A real assessment of supply and demand is already evident with livestock numbers already at critically low levels and producers hanging grimly to core stock. I urge producers not to unload heifers or future breeders without fully assessing a recovery plan when the season returns. This may also provoke the consideration of a return to sheep for some producers who have measured the extra demand on water supply brought on by cattle numbers. They may also have left this area of production based on return from wool but real returns for meat and lamb are historically strong at present and developing markets will continue this push for our protein sources. If you are considering selling or buying I would be happy to discuss your situation. We have numerous buyers looking for property in specific areas Glencoe, Glen Elgin, Ben Lomond and Wellingrove area, to mention a few. The price range for some of these buyers is wide ranging with multi-million dollar budgets for suitable properties already proposed. A thankyou to those sellers who have entrusted the sale of a property to our company. I have widened the marketing angle for your property by suggesting the far reaching resources of David Nolan, our Sydney based real estate specialist, particularly if your property has a point of difference or is of a scale to attract large investors or off shore interests.

12 Oh What a Trip Derby Day, Melbourne Cup at Flemington It all started on Saturday for Derby Day, where I was lucky enough to be able to attend the Bird Cage in the TAB Corp Marquee. WOW what an experience. Mingling with celebrities, royalty and plenty of sporting stars A fantastic opportunity not to be missed. Off to AAMI Park on Sunday to watch the Kangaroos beat the Poms!! Monday we attended the Melbourne Cup parade in the city which was spectacular. Up close and personal with the jockeys, trainers and owners. Once that was finished it was off to the Young and Jackson (a famous Melbourne Hotel) for a few waters with hops Here is where it all becomes a bit surreal. I met the well known Lovick family, Charlie is especially renowned for training Tom Burlinson for the Man From Snowy River film. They are a lovely family living in the high country of Mansfield Victoria and run a Hereford herd. Next we met some owners and friends of Who Shot the Barman from New Zealand who ran third in the Melbourne Cup, and well, it went downhill from there bloody kiwis! Tuesday - Melbourne Cup day - I attended the Chairman's Lounge on level 3 of the members stand between the clock towers and the winning post. The views are spectacular and we were treated like kings. Sitting next to us were the owners of Fiorente (last year s winner), just below us were the owners of Junoob, and across was Anthony Cummings. A big thank you to Pancare and RMA for allowing the opportunity to partake in such an awesome experience and watch the Race that stops the Nation!! Colin Say & Co P/L purchased tickets to support Pancare Foundation at the annual RMA Conference. Also attending were Forbes Livestock and Agency representatives, a firm that we have had a great association with over many years. S.B. The agent said he would receive $12,000 for the lot, but about 7 per cent commission would be taken off for transport, insurance, government levies and the like. The price was agreed upon, because the farmer did not want to let on to the agent he could not calculate percentages. The farmer then walked over to the local pub to have a beer with a mate. Can you calculate percentages? he asked the mate. No, I left school early and was not good at numbers, was the reply. So the farmer went over to the barmaid. If I gave you $12,000 minus 7pc, how much would you take off? he asked. Everything, except my earrings, she replied.
