BOSCH TALK The score card early on a Sunday morning, after you have played the undisputed number one rugby school in the country, does not make for a good read. However, there is more to it than just the results. I saw Bosch teams on Saturday fighting until the final whistle blew and refusing to surrender. Both the 1 st and 2 nd XV displayed huge character and made many friends with the way they played and approach the game. The U14 and U15 age groups never gave up, refused to be bullied and showed real fight. The draw for the U15Cs was well-deserved.

The question was raised on Saturday, by loyal Bosch rugby supporters, about what we can possibly gain by playing opposition of this calibre, with eight SA Schools players in their team. The answer is straightforward: As a true sportsman by heart, you want to measure yourself against the best. Playing teams like Boishaai not only tests character, but we also learn a lot about ourselves and our ability. If Bosch is serious to grow and improve our rugby development, we need to continue playing the strongest possible opposition, week in and week out. Our rugby will only improve when we play matches where we suddenly have way less space and time to execute our game plan. Furthermore, players of both the 1 st and 2 nd XV expressed their enjoyment and satisfaction afterwards, knowing they gave it their best and left nothing behind.

This coming weekend will, yet again, pose new challenges to all of our teams. A highly motivated Tygerberg team will come to the southern suburbs for what will be one of the highlights of their season. Any co-ed school from the northern suburbs wants to play an all boys school and beat them. With just four matchers left, our players need to pitch on Saturday with their own A game and win convincingly, in order to be ready for the last three local derbies of the 2016 season. 11 U19A RBHS 6 PBHS 26 Playing the current number one team in South Africa, who have been unbeaten for two seasons while taking on all the strongest opposition South Africa has to offer and currently boasting eight SA School A team players, is what makes playing in the Super A league so special. Someone tweeted prior to the weekend, Rondebosch will get their first taste of International Rugby this weekend! I thought that was brilliant and true. Where and when else will boys come up against such a formidable opponent, and such heavily stacked odds, and be able to fight with fourteen other brothers to prove their worth as fighters. It is something that is very special.

What is even more special is that we coaches and the players came away from our mid season overnight stay at Churchhaven (courtesy of Dennis Nick) and had complete belief that we would topple the giant. Did we win? No. However, we did show fight and a determination that made Bosch proud. Did we prove that it is possible? Yes, I think so. Well done to each boy in both the 1 st and 2 nd teams that make up our squad for showing what we are made of at Bosch. From the kick off we pressured them and contested a breakdown to get an early three points from a penalty conversion by Samuel Cragg. This was followed, a short while later, by another penalty to give us a six point lead. Boishaai seemed somewhat taken aback by our willingness to take them on, both offensively and defensively, in the first ten minutes. However, through strong carries and effective running Boishaai eventually did get enough momentum out wide and managed to score in the corner and convert.

They started to play the slightly unexpected rainy conditions a bit better, by kicking in behind our defence where we seemed to struggle to simply dive on the loose ball at times. This gained them good ground at times when they could not break our defence. This eventually led to a maul try, when we failed to effectively compete on their lineout close to our line, just a little before the break. We had a chance to level matters when Robbie Davis took a quick tap penalty and Van Der Bijl Blake broke their defensive line out wide and got fairly close to their line. We could not score but got the penalty and chose to go for points but it was not the easiest of kicks and the attempt failed. So into the break 12-6 down we went but still full of belief.

In the second half, their superior kicking game combined with strong carries kept us under constant pressure, especially when combined with our own lack of patience and unforced errors at key times. They scored a further try out in the corner midway through the second half to put the game beyond our reach. However, I was proud that the players did not drop heads or quit and continued to fight. This was one of the aspects we have focused on this season, the ability and willingness to keep fighting. In summary, we showed periods of better attacking shape. When we had enough patience and could string all the offensive aspects together for long enough, we started to get reward against the strongest team in the country. On defence, there was a marked improval in the commitment to the tackle; our technique is also still improving as is our understanding and execution of our defensive systems. However, as always, there is so much still to work on and with just four games remaining we look forward to a week of hard work! I, for one, am very wary of any complacency as we face a very good and highly motivated Tygerberg at home this Saturday! PENALTIES: Samuel Cragg (2) MARK LINDENBERG

U19B (Soldiers) RBHS 8 PBHS 26 The Soldiers had a superb week of training. Besides two late withdrawals in the pack, the Soldiers were confident that they had ticked the preparation box during the week to have a strong performance against the much-fancied Paarl Boys outfit. Having started the match positively, with some strong defence that seemed to rattle the hosts somewhat, it took a moment of brilliance from the Boys High side to break the deadlock. A pinpoint cross kick, and a sneaky little snipe by the opposition scrum half, saw Boys High poised at 12-0 midway through the first half and ready to take the fight to the Soldiers. However, in true Soldiers fashion, the boys kept fighting admirably. A slick lineout move saw Jason Fisher crash over in the corner. Then a well-taken penalty, by Matthew Ginsberg, brought the score line to Boys High scored a try just before half-time bringing the score to 19-8.

The second half was much of the same. The Soldiers seemed to enjoy the physical defensive battle on the day and kept knocking the home side backwards. However, a lack of scoring opportunities meant that the hosts were always comfortable leaders in the fixture. Then, near full time, they seemed to put the final nail in the coffin with a runaway try. This was one of the stronger Soldiers performances. They made a strong Boys High team work very hard for the victory. We now look to carry this momentum to Tygerberg this coming weekend. 30 U19C (Dogs) RBHS 0 PBHS 61 The Dogs were all fired up during the warm-up and took the field determined to cause an upset. Right from the kick off they were on the attack and inside Paarl s red zone for the first minute, only to be held back by resolute defence. Shortly afterwards, the hosts ran right through for the first of their 11 tries that followed at regular intervals. Starved of possession, the Dogs spent most of the game defending against a team consisting of bigger and stronger boys who had only one thing in mind to score as often as possible. Yet, on the rare occasions when Bosch had the ball, it moved smoothly along the line, but the boys hit a wall of defenders who stopped them in their tracks. Among the backs Kyle Smith (13) brought off some great hits while Hugo Minnaar (10) sent his line away swiftly. Up front Munir Parker (3) and Lorenzo Napoli (8) tried hard. 31 U19D (Force) RBHS 3 PBHS U19E 69 On a cold morning in Paarl the Force ran into a local team that outweighed and outclassed a team that had no answer to their bullocking runs and brute force. As one cynic remarked, What do these guys have for breakfast dumbbells? The Force s solitary score came from a long-range penalty by Hishaam Damon (10). Matt Lailvaux (7), not the biggest loose forward, punched way above his weight and brought off some good tackles; while Tyrone Jones (6) and Zac Lamprecht (4) also worked hard. In the backline, Zuhair Dollie (11) impressed with his speed. Hopefully, the Force will regroup and return to the Meadows next week to show Tygerberg what they are really capable of doing. TOP DOG (MAN OF THE MATCH): Matt Lailvaux BACKS THAT ROCK: Zuhair Dollie FORWARD THAT ROCKS: Tyrone Jones U19E (Flyers) RBHS 0 PBHS 51 JOHANN GERBER This Saturday saw a team that was strung together on the side of the field (a few minutes before kick-off) take on the well-oiled machine that is Booishaai. However, the Flyers that had assembled were raring to give their opponents a big shock. The first 20 minutes of the game saw a massive defensive effort and a level of intensity that we have rarely been able to achieve. Thus, we kept the score board relatively low throughout the first half. A special mention must go out to Sipho Zwayi, Justin Gillett, Alex DeKock and Wafiq Abrahams who either lifted the whole team through their individual effort or with their constant positivity and enthusiasm. Unfortunately, our hands let us down and we were not able to capitalise on our opportunities. As time went on, our fitness and focus dropped, which allowed their big runners to poke holes in our line and keep the score board ticking over. The final score was GARETH VLOTAN

U16A RBHS 0 PBHS 59 One of the positives of playing in the premier league is that you have the opportunity to test yourself against the best in the country. Saturday, out at Paarl, provided one such opportunity. A last minute reshuffle of our line up with captain, Justin Reynolds, not available due to illness, and the loss of fullback, Alex Rattray, through a serious concussion early on, did not help matters. Excuses aside, our team was outplayed on the day and we were taught a rugby lesson in muddy conditions. Paarl Boys was outstanding in all aspects of the game. They had an excellent set-piece and were ruthless in exploiting any of our indiscretions.

It was a bruising encounter and we could simply not compete with the pace and flair displayed by the opposition. The boys manfully tried to stem the tide but the final score of 59-0 demonstrates why Paarl Boys is rated as the top U16 side in the country. The Bosch boys, however, cannot be faulted for their commitment and it was a pleasure to watch them put their bodies on the line for the blue jersey. In particular, Johan Strauss had a massive game and never stopped trying. With four matches left, we have to take the positives out of this game and move forward. We are looking forward to hosting Tygerberg back on home soil. Thanks to our local and international supporters. NEIL TEUBES

U16B RBHS 7 PBHS 35 The U16B team faced a tough encounter in their first game back, after a lengthy four week break since our last match against Bishops. As always we braced ourselves for a strong challenge up the N1 in Paarl. The game started very evenly, with neither team dominating territory. Eventually Paarl Boys won a penalty and kicked for the corner. Then they managed to cross our line through a driving maul from five metres out. Five minutes later the same thing happened, with Paarl scoring their second try from a very similar move. Paarl then continued to apply pressure for the rest of the half and was duly rewarded with two further tries. The half time score was The second half was a much closer affair. Paarl was only able to cross our line once, and we managed to get ourselves onto the scoreboard through centre Gareth Petersen. The boys can be proud of their defensive performance on Saturday morning. They can take heart from the fact that, even 30-0 down at half time, they were still able to rally to win the second half. Next up is another tough challenge against Tygerberg High School. TRIES: CONVERSIONS: Gareth Petersen Paul Ige LEVI CALTHORPE

U16C RBHS 0 PBHS 64 Our preparation during the week was hindered due to boys being injured or sick. However, in this league there are no excuses. Our mindset going into this clash was always to focus on our game and on our fighting spirit, which will be of utmost importance going into the last four matches of the season. Paarl Boys is privileged to have an extreme depth of players in all their age groups and it showed on the day. They played a brilliant brand of rugby and I compliment them on that. However, we achieved what we set out to do: we won our own personal battles and the boys never gave up, fighting to the last minute. There were some massive hits all round but a mention must be given to Joshua Venter who delivered a cross cover tackle that should be on YouTube! Also to Marcus Gunton who, on his debut, showed us what he is capable of with a massive hit. I am proud of the attitude that the boys showed on Saturday. It will be vital to maintain this going into the end of the season. TYREN LEE

U15A RBHS 0 PBHS 25 Without a whole lot to lose, in a trip out to Paarl, it was always a case of measuring where we stand against one of the best rugby schools in the country. The first half was a very close affair, with only a penalty by the hosts on the board going into the last five minutes of the half. A few minutes later, an overthrown lineout by Paarl caught our defence unaware and, after some neat play, they crossed over for the only try in the half. With a penalty count against us, field position was hard to come by and a further penalty was added giving Paarl a 13-0 half time lead. With the forwards leading the way in a dominant lineout display, we stifled a lot of the Paarl momentum. However, some good handling broke our line, midway through the second half, allowing a second try and extending their lead. Despite controlling territory and possession in the last 15 minutes, some determined tackling by the hosts kept us out. A third breakaway try added a bit of salt to the wounds as the boys possibly deserved a better result. This was a positive performance with a lot of commitment and desire which will, hopefully, lead to some good results in the remaining games. PIETER BENADE

U15B RBHS 7 PBHS 45 The second half of the season kicked off with a tough trip out to Paarl. On the back of a long holiday with no practice, and having had one of our midweek practices pretty much rained out, the coaches went into the match very nervous. The message to the team was simple - we needed to show some character and the team answered. We produced our best line speed of the year, we hassled and disrupted and we managed to turn over the ball on several occasions. But for a few early handling errors, the score could have been closer, which would have more fairly reflected the boys effort. However, the team should take pride in their physical performance against a seriously good Paarl side - their coaches told us that they very rarely get tested as well as they were on Saturday! TRIES: CONVERSIONS: Matthew Dalrymple Matthew Dalrymple DAVID VAN DER LINDE

U15C RBHS 7 PBHS 7 Muddy wet conditions were evident as we neared Paarl Boys on Saturday morning. The Wednesday practice beforehand had to be cut short because of torrential rainfall, so we knew what to expect. The weather played ball, however, and it turned out to be a pleasant morning. Another two of our forwards (Matthew Lubbe and Joshua McGuinness) got a call up to the B team which made us proud! It didn t seem to disrupt the pack too badly. Lubbe was replaced by the trusty Aiden Wittels, who superbly threw the ball in against Boys High. Johan Louw got the call up from the D team and played out of his socks. Unfortunately, he took a blow to the head, from a knee, in the second half and had to be taken off due to concussion. Our boys were fired up for the match and, in the end, it was our defence that managed to keep us in the game. We gave the ball away too many times through some fairly aimless kicking, which we will look at and rectify. It s all part of learning the game though, so I don t see it as a bad thing. The half time score was 7-0 to the home side. We had them in their own 22m for a good period of time but we struggled to execute. One penalty kick at goal from our flyhalf just missed. The second half was a seesaw battle, much like the first, with neither team claiming full dominancy. With about ten minutes in hand our robust and skilful centre, Daniel Van Houten, managed to capitalise off a scrappy ball close to their line to score next to the poles. Rhys McBeth made no mistake with the conversion, making it seven all. We coaches were extremely proud of the boys! They put their bodies on the line and tackled well. TRIES: CONVERSIONS: Daniel Van Houten Rhys McBeth JEREMY FOSTER

U15D RBHS 5 PBHS U15E 26 The mighty dragon slayers put up a good fight against a welldrilled tough Paarl Boys side. In the first quarter we felt the wrath of their bullish forwards running direct lines, sucking us into rucks and sending the ball out wide, letting it do the work. The momentum, however, swung in the second quarter and we felt good going into the half with a try being scored by Ben Brown, who was also our Man of the Match. After the break, the momentum, unfortunately, was regained by the opposition and we couldn t quite manage to pass their tryline again. Nonetheless, it was a great game to watch and the boys impressed me with their mental side of the game. They never gave up, their heads never dropped, and they kept on tackling and making hard runs right up until the final whistle. Unlucky boys, you certainly put up a good fight and they knew it too! TRIES: Ben Akin Brown JEREMY FOSTER

U14A RBHS 0 PBHS 28 The trip down the N1 proved to be a tough one, yet not the usual disappointing one. Taking on one of South Africa s top rugby schools in Paarl Boys High is never an easy task, especially after a mid-season break. However, the boys were up for the game. Being on the Paarl Boys first team field the boys were excited to be back after the holidays. They were eager to improve from a disappointing first half of the season. The first half started with Bosch kicking off and a good chase line forced a knock on. This brought the first scrum of the game, which saw the Bosch boys visibly motivated. The scrum, however, saw Paarl Boys push the Bosch pack over. This left loose head prop, Jonathan Bouwer, injured and he was taken off on a stretcher. This did not dampen the Bosch boys spirits as every scrum after that was solid and laid a good platform for the backline to attack. The boys were playing in the right areas of the field, which was good to see, as we struggled with this aspect in the first half of the season. Paarl Boys, however, had a lot of possession and scored from a lineout. One of their bigger men bulldozed his way over the tryline to put them up 7-0. For the rest of the half Bosch defended well but was starved of ball. However, we went into half time highly encouraged by the 7-0 score line. The half time team talk was mostly about keeping our ball and trying to keep the ball out of Paarl s hands. The second half started with Paarl Boys scoring, after a change of tactics as they put in a box kick, which found space and collected to score. This change of tactics was a complement to Bosch s strong defence as the third try came from a similar play, where a kick also found space, resulting in good phase play and a seven point try. The last nail in the coffin was close to the end of play. A try, similar to the first one, was scored by the same burly Paarl Boys player running over two Bosch boys to make the final score 28-0.

What was good to see was the backline running harder and attacking the gap, especially in the second half. The defence was also promising with some big tackles coming in that forced Paarl Boys into changing their tactics to kicking. Lastly, it must be noted the improvement and fight in the U14As in this game - they kept on fighting till the end and never gave up. MAN OF THE MATCH: Sebastian Bauriedl JOEL CAREW U14B RBHS 0 PBHS 78 After the much needed break, a challenge, which needed no introduction, awaited our boys at Paarl Boys this weekend. No doubt this was going to be a bruising encounter. From the opening exchanges it seemed as though Bosch was in for a tough day at the office. Paarl notched up a quick couple of tries, in as many minutes, to set the tone for what would prove to be a dominant display from the opposition. Bosch struggled to put some meaningful play together, nevertheless, the boys continuously showed determination to chase an elusive fivepointer. As the game approached the final 15 minutes it seemed as though it was time for some fresh legs. This saw a couple of players on their debut for the U14Bs - congratulations to these boys! The final whistle brought an incredibly tough day to an end with the scoreboard reading a disappointing Nevertheless, it is time for Bosch to make amends and prove our worth this Saturday against Tygerberg. 43 U14C RBHS 14 PBHS 19 Paarl Boys posted an exciting challenge for the U14C team, especially coming off an impressive win against Bishops just before the long June holiday. The team looked to keep the momentum going, by maintaining focus and practicing hard throughout the week. The boys started off well, immediately putting pressure on the favoured Paarl Boys side, with Damon Le Roux and Jono Harley putting in a massive double hit on a shell shocked Paarl boy. Paarl did well to capitalise on their opportunities, scoring two soft tries on the wing. However, our team showed true character, continuing to play with intensity and focus. This led to Tiago Negus sending an outrageous skip pass, which sent Tristan Schoon powering under the poles. The half time score was The second half proved to be a tense affair. The Bosch boys kept playing outstanding rugby, rushing the Paarl attack, with all our players giving their absolute best. An extended period of penalties and scrums, right on the Paarl line, eventually paid off with our flyhalf, James Ritchie, scoring under the poles. Damon Le Roux showered some BMT by slotting the conversion. The score was with only minutes remaining. Paarl came back firing, and managed to sneak in a final try, taking the score to It was a tough defeat to take, knowing there was a real opportunity to have a famous win away from home. We can take a lot from this game. Firstly, it proves what this side is capable of and that we need to be confident in our abilities, no matter who the opposition is. Secondly, it highlighted that we need to continue with our intensity and focus, no matter what the score line is. Even if we are 12 points down, like we were in the first half, or two points up, like in the second half - we must always be playing AND enjoying our rugby, no matter the score line.
