16 April 2014 # 2 U19A RBHS 27 WYNBERG 15 Our match against Wynberg was played in searing hot conditions, but the real heat came from a physical Wynberg team who gave our boys a baptism of fire that they will not forget for a very long time. They were all over us from the kick off with only a couple of guys bravely trying to stop the tide. In the end too many missed and soft tackles had them on the front foot which made them look even more impressive. We hardly touched the ball and when we did manage to wrestle it back from them, we showed our inexperience by just handing hard earned possession back through poor kicking and silly mistakes. We had a few good moments where we actually played some good rugby and showed that they too are vulnerable without the ball but in reality their physicality kept us under pressure for long periods which made their scoring seem far too easy. We handled ourselves well at set-piece time and it is something we can build on going forward, but we really need to step up in the physicality department as certain individuals seemed more concerned about not getting injured and jumping on the plane bound for KES this coming Wednesday. Captain, Robbie Waddilove, led admirably from the front and was missed when he had to be replaced early in the second half. Zain Davids was again fearless and proved his class in just about every statistical department. Riaan Barnard also contributed in the tight exchanges and led the scrum department well, while Rory Thompson toiled hard around the park and was well rewarded with a fine try after another breaking run from Zain off the back of the scrum. I would just like to congratulate the Wynberg team on their outstanding performance - they thoroughly deserved all the credit. They have put in the hard work over the past four years both on and off the field which has culminated in a team that is going to be very difficult to beat this season - it is just nice to know that we will have another opportunity to play them again and hopefully give a better account of ourselves. We aim to learn, grow and improve on what was a very disappointing start to our season. We look forward to the KES Festival as we try and bounce back and prove to ourselves that there is some fight in this team. They don t come much tougher than KES, Marlow Landbou and Grey PE, all in the space of five days! See you behind the poles. CLINT VAN RENSBURG - Head of Rugby

Kyle U19B RBHS 27 WYNBERG 15 Rondebosch kicked off and, from the outset, it was clear that they were going to play a tight forward game with short passes close to the rucks and mauls. The Bosch forwards dominated the first half, playing as a unit. The captain, Lihle Kula, and his lock partner, Dean Adams, along with eighth-man, Callum Blows, were the pick of the forwards. In the fifth minute, the forwards drove for the line and the ball found winger, Mojalefa Mosia, who scored near the corner flag. Scrum-half, Matthew Tippett, converted and Bosch lead 7-0. In the seventh minute Wynberg managed to get into the Rondebosch half for the first time and were successful with a penalty (7-3). The next fifteen minutes were scrappy with both teams making unforced errors in the extreme hot weather. The Bosch forwards were scrumming very well, pushing the Wynberg pack backwards on numerous occasions, and their lineouts were also well above par. Matthew Tippett was looking very sharp around the scrum and his kicks were controlling the game for Bosch. Continued pressure caused the Wynberg backs to drop a ball in midfield, and winger Armani Minani snapped up the loose ball and sprinted 50 metres to score under the posts. Tippett converted (14-3). In the twenty-sixth minute Bosch were awarded a penalty, which was taken quickly by Dean Adams and he scored under the posts. The conversion was again successful and Bosch led 21-3 at half time. In the second half Rondebosch continued to dominate in the forwards. A rare missed tackle in midfield led to a Wynberg try (21-8) but the Bosch forward machine kept a grip on the game. Midway through the half Tippett was successful with a penalty (24-8). Minani was prominent with two good runs (one of 60 metres) and the Bosch loose forwards were very prominent. Tippett was successful with another penalty (27-8) and, with time running out, Wynberg scored a consolation try making the final score

U19C (DOGS) RBHS 17 WBHS 14 The Third XV, more affectionately known as the 'Dogs', went into Saturday s fixture against traditional rivals Wynberg keen to get the season off with a bang. With only three training sessions under our belt, and losing our captain late in the week to the seconds, it was always going to be a tough encounter against a determined Wynberg outfit. However the Dogs were itching to get on the park and get the long awaited rugby season going. After taking an early lead, via a penalty through captain, Matthew Jeffery, the Dogs seemed to be firmly in control and more points soon followed. However, our opponents, in true Wynberg style managed to score a try either side of halftime to take a commanding 14 3 lead. With only eight minutes left on the clock the Dogs were still trailing by 11. It took some individual brilliance and side-stepping from fullback Ettiene Kille to score under the poles and set up a thrilling last five minutes. The Dogs never dropped their heads and, with an overwhelming forward pack destroying Wynberg, the boys could sense a comeback was more than possible. With a penalty on the stroke of full time, the boys in blue and gold kicked for the line only a few metres out and attempted one last rolling maul. With the crowd on its feet and cheering and virtually the whole backline in the maul, Kieran Bax crashed over for the decisive score that gave Bosch an impressive victory. The Dogs showed great character in a 'week of comebacks' and have now set the tone for an exciting season ahead. TRIES: Ettiene Kille (1), Kieran Bax (1) PENALTIES: Matthew Jeffery (1) CONVERSIONS: Matthew Jeffery (2 of 2) MAN OF THE MATCH: Garth Shenker

U19D RBHS 0 WBHS 19 For our first game of the season the expectations were high and the boys were really motivated. The game got off to a bad start with three injuries in the first 15 minutes and conceding one try. The boys never gave up and had some great periods of play, coming close to scoring on at least three occasions but just not being able to cross the line. The half time score was 5-0 to Wynberg and we felt we still had a good chance. We never gave up at all and applied some good pressure but fitness caught up with us and conceded two more tries towards the end of the game. The boys showed great character and never gave up which shows we have a positive attitude for the season ahead. The game ended 19-0 to Wynberg. U19E (FLYERS) RBHS 62 WBHS 7 On Saturday 13 April, the Flyers took on WBHS fifth team in what looked to be a nice entertaining game of rugby as both teams have the "never giving up" spirit. In the beginning stages of the game the Flyers didn't have much structure, which made the game very untidy. After a few words from the sideline, however, they came out with a bang scoring tries all over the fortress (as the boys call their field). Wynberg had no idea what was going on because tries were just coming past them and they had no defence or power to stop the Flyers machine. Aiden Child stood out, scoring three tries and becoming the man of the match for Saturday s game. Flyers ended up scoring 11 tries - 1 try of WBHS. The boys showed some real heart in the blistering heat. Now it's time to prepare for the games ahead!

U16A RBHS 18 WBHS 22 It was a pumped up and positive U16A that took to Meadow A in sweltering heat to prove that this team would not allow a repeat of last year s opener where the lads from Lovers Walk posted a cricket score. Within three minutes Bosch took the lead when Sam Cragg (10) slotted over a penalty. Five minutes later Wynberg replied with the equaliser and took the lead two minutes later: 6-3. Cragg levelled the scores ten minutes later (6-6). Despite determined attacks by the opposition, the Bosch defence was superb and Wynberg could not cross the whitewash. The Bosch forwards also started to dominate and it took Wynberg another 15 minutes before a penalty put them ahead. Right on half time a further penalty put them up The second half saw a Bosch side never giving up despite yet another penalty to Wynberg who were now up Almost immediately Mike Mavovana (15) put in one of his characteristic weaving runs covering half the field to dot down behind the poles. Cragg added the extra points and at Bosch sensed possible victory. Unfortunately, Wynberg bounced right back with a soft converted try (22-13), thus requiring two scores if Rondebosch wanted to register a shock win. The pack did drive over right on time for burly lock Ebi van der Ross to dot down and bring the game to an end at 22-18, but it was not enough. A relieved Wynberg side left the pitch knowing that the days where Bosch would be the punch bags are over. Although a loss, the boys in blue can feel proud of never giving up and showed that there is plenty of hope for the rest of the season. Photo courtesy of Mahdi van der Ross

U16B RBHS 7 WBHS 31 Bosch took an early 7-0 lead after four minutes when fiery flanker Ian Grant crossed in a forward drive for Cameron Abrahamse (13) to convert. Wynberg equalised with a converted try seven minutes later and this remained the score until the turn. The heat and lack of fitness began taking its toll ten minutes from the end and Wynberg ran in four tries (one converted) to finish comfortable winners. The signs are there that this team can improve but, as coach Gareth Muller said afterwards, lots of hard work lies ahead before the next fixture in May. U15A RBHS 8 WBHS 27 As the first match of the season it was an ideal opportunity to view the team in action against WBHS. Unfortunately, first half lapses in concentration on both attack and defence saw soft tries conceded to the opposition and scoring opportunities missed. These lapses also contributed to turnovers and mistakes which cost the team and resulted in points scored against us. Problems were not only limited to defence but attack as well where opportunities with the ball were missed. The second half saw an improvement in attack and ball retention with a few standout performances. However, lack of cohesion between ball-carrier and support play saw possession conceded or scoring opportunities missed. Solid scrumming and secure lineout ball contributed to possession which included lineout steals from Jason Macleod Smith. Strong runs by Suhaib, Chulu, Donald(DJ), Braden, Zakkie and Robbie show the potential for more positive accurate play and the team is aware that this weekend s result is not a true reflection of the potential of the squad. TRIES: Donald Falconer(DJ) (1) PENALTY: Donald Falconer(DJ) (3) MAN OF THE MATCH: Robbie Davis

U15B RBHS 5 WBHS 15 The U15B team went into the Wynberg fixture looking to start their season off on a high. The team was welldrilled and keen to play but it seems the heat and first game rustiness got to the boys. Wynberg started off well using their share of the possession quite well and converting their chances into points: leading 10-0 after 20 minutes. Bosch dominated the collision point but couldn't convert their chances into points. The second half was much better for the Bosch boys who started converting their chances. The boys showed a good amount of fight in the second half but came up just short, losing 15-5 to a Wynberg team who took the chances presented to them. TRIES: Matthew Horrigan MAN OF THE MATCH: Ethan Seymour U15C RBHS 24 WBHS 41 With only two minutes on the board we were behind the poles through an opportunistic run from the Wynberg try line! However, the Bosch team looked slick and many of them showed their natural skills, albeit with limited preparation for the game. As a result, the first try came from a lineout steal by Reagan George, culminating in a full backline movement to put Khaleel Tayob over in the corner. This was soon followed by another good passage of play where forwards provided quick ball for the backs and James Sutten scored out wide. Some good marshalling of the backline and interplay by fullback Mike King (throughout the game) and Jack Halperin, at centre, set up another great try with Jonny Murray claiming the honours. At the start of the second half, with the score at 17-10, we blundered our own lineout ball and Wynberg scored and converted. At and pressurizing their backline with a kick which fell deep in the Wynberg 22m, our attackers, unfortunately, failed to bundle the wing into touch. From the resultant hack kick the bounce favoured the chasing player and suddenly Wynberg were ahead. Injuries to our Vuyo Kali (wing) and Dave Derma (centre) didn t help and Wynberg also got stronger at the breakdown as the heat appeared to wilt our forwards. As a result a few more tries were scored. Not to be completely undone, we finished off with another classic passing movement, from the half way line, to score on the whistle. This was a game of two halves - with glimpses of some very exciting U15 Rondebosch talent on show. TRIES: Khaleel Tayob (1), James Sutten (1), Jonny Murray (1), Notoosure (1) CONVERSIONS: 3 MAN OF THE MATCH: Mike King

U15D RBHS 41 WBHS 24 The first match of the season, with a bench of nine players to get game time, was a real poser before the kick off. However, the boys (that started) found their rhythm early and manufactured some good interplay to get points on the board. The first try came via Josh Lang, captain for the day, from a tight head heel deep in their 22m. Another try by fellow loose forward Tristan Oliver, following a blinding run in the centre space, gave our side impetus as we started to take control of the game. The game came alight with Khaleel Tayob and Dave Derma coming off the bench at flyhalf and centre respectively. Forceful running and stepping into space saw them collect five tries between them. In fairness, we leaked a few tries towards the end as the game breakers came off and the heat started to take its toll on our big forwards. TRIES: Josh Lang (1), Tristan Oliver (1), Dave Derma (3), Khaleel Tayob(2) CONVERSIONS: 3 MAN OF THE MATCH: Dave Derma and Khaleel Tayob U14A RBHS 17 WBHS 15 The first game of the official rugby season saw Bosch play against Wynberg on Lower Desert A. Playing at home for the first game of the season did not provide any advantage and despite having about 70% of the possession in the first half, Rondebosch found themselves trailing 5-0 at half time. After some positional changes the team started to come together a little better in the second half and managed to score a try of their own to level the scores. Wynberg managed to stretch their lead to 15-5 with about eight minutes left to play. Bosch did well to capitalise on a tiring Wynberg defence, crossing the try line twice in the closing minutes and converting on the final whistle to snatch a nail-biting victory. Credit must be given to the boys for the positive attitude they showed right until the end even when it seemed that their fate had been decided. TRIES: CONVERSIONS: Imtiyaaz Galant, Ross Stone, Justin Reynolds Ross Stone

U14B RBHS 24 WBHS 17 Our forwards took control from the start with an impressive steal at the kick off. The forwards rumbled it up and Keegan Bezeidenhout went over for an early try. Jaco Barnard was successful with the conversion. Two minutes later the second try was set up by Lukhanyo Nayo - making the initial break from a midfield ruck followed by a beautiful offload to Liam Steyn who dotted down in the corner. The conversion was pulled just to the left. The game soon settled down and Wynberg began to find their feet. After some well-worked play they scored their first try of the match. Just before half time Wynberg managed another promising spell of play which was quickly ended by Oliver Daffarn who scored a well-read intercept try to take Bosch into the break 19-5 up. The second half was a little less exciting with many handling errors from both sides. After a huge tighthead by David Ige, Michael le Roex picked up from the base and powered over to secure the game. The final whistle went with Bosch winning TRIES: CONVERSIONS: Bezeidenhout, Liam Steyn, Oliver Daffarn, Michael le Roex Jaco Barnard (x2) U14C RBHS 29 WBHS 5 Although the score does not reflect it, this was a tightly contested derby. Credit must go to our boys for their defensive efforts in only conceding one try to a very determined Wynberg side. The forwards brought the intensity and put in the hard yards to set up a good platform for the backline. The game was a pleasure to watch as the backline ran their opposition ragged to beat the defence with tries coming from within our own half: this was a result of the collective effort by the backs and forwards. We are also blessed with a lot of depth and the boys who came on off the bench really put their hands up. TRIES: Logan Slaai (2), Someleze Metu, Yondipha Nongqotho (2) CONVERSIONS: Andrew Allkin (1), Jeremy Owen (1) MAN OF THE MATCH: Gareth Probert U14D RBHS 43 WBHS 10 Wynberg, who came out chanting their traditional war cry, were quickly silenced after right winger Hlonela scored in the corner in his first ever rugby game soon after kickoff. From then on the flood gates opened as a result of both the backs and forwards putting up a display of some expert vision and handling skills. Rondebosch beat their opposition with their passing game allowing our players to score in the corners. Special mention must go to left winger Chumani, also playing his first ever game of rugby, who showcased his speed and scored four tries. Credit must go to Wynberg who did not give up and were rewarded with a consolation try to end off the match. TRIES: Hlonela Mayosi (1), Chumani Mayosi (4), Latshatse Lakoma (1), Matthew Wilson (1) CONVERSIONS: Robert Gillett (4) MAN OF THE MATCH: Chumani Mayosi
