IT S ALL ABOUT THE GAME Research leaves no doubt that success on the rugby field is the result of the marriage between genetic and training factors. Being a community school with a holistic approach to personal development, Rondebosch do not scout talent. We have no choice but to work with the good talent available, mainly from our own community. In order to compete with the best in one of the strongest school boy rugby leagues in the country, we therefore need to work harder and smarter. Our focus is to get a good rugby system in place backed by good coaching because ultimately, what all good rugby teams have in common is great people guiding them. That is the reason why we strive for a balance between specialised outside coaching and involving class teachers on the practice field. That is also why we have been running a very successful conditioning program since October last year.

Our 1 st XV embarks on a tour to KES and Namibia shortly with a positive mind set due to an excellent start to their season. They beat Paul Roos at the Newlands Schools Rugby Day and then ran five tries on Quteniqua at the PRG Rugby Festival on Saturday. But it is a long season ahead with twenty four 1 st team matches scheduled, so player management will be of paramount importance. Bosch hosted a very successful 10 s tournament with 12 teams and 21 matches on the day. Thank you to the BRSC for their involvement and support. In addition our junior teams (U14A, U15A & U16A) had some good results at the Hermanus Festival. The sport of rugby at Rondebosch is woven into the fabric of our proud school. In fact, good results on the field bring energy and a good vibe to the class room. JOHAN SNIJMANN HEAD OF RUGBY

FROM BEHIND THE POLES Is it only me; or are the years becoming shorter? With preparation starting way back in October the anticipation for the 2015 rugby season rolled in strongly in the month of March with all its busy madness. Our preseason preparation received an unexpected boost when passionate rugby old boy, Philip Myburg, invited the squad to set up camp on his front lawn at Joostenburg. This gave the team a great opportunity to come together away from our familiar surroundings and the gym to do some much needed work on our inner strength, and more importantly what we as a team want to stand for. The boys booked in on the Saturday afternoon and divided into small groups to discuss various topics. We began the search to find what a true Bosch Boytjie rugby player looks like, and more importantly, what a Bosch rugby player should look like on the inside.

After some stimulating discussion the boys took an invigorating run through the winelands as the sun started to set over the beautiful region. The evening came to a close with a delicious steak braai and then topped off with marshmallows around the camp fire. One of the themes for our season is to reclaim some of the lost land in the schoolboy rugby landscape. This theme culminated on our journey up the Klapmuts hill at 5am the next morning. The boys took the beloved Bosch Branch to the top of the hill, from where one can see the most amazing 360 degree view of the beautiful area we live in. The hike up and down the hill gave both coaches and players some time to do a bit of introspection for the season ahead. It also gave us the opportunity to see the squad dynamic and where we stood when it came to team work and unity. Driving away on the Sunday afternoon, I certainly felt we had accomplished what we needed to. Our vision and values for our season are crystal clear. The boys had focused on all the mental and inner strength building blocks which will form the foundation for our season and hopefully, future Bosch rugby teams. From here on it will be important for the team of 2015 to drive home our values like humility, respect and resilience, to name but a few.

AURIC AUTO BOSCH 10 S As always, the boys look forward to stretching their legs on Rugby A and competing in the Auric Auto Rondebosch Tens for the Tienkie Heyns Shield. With 60 of our boys playing on the day it gave everyone a nice opportunity to show off some of the preseason gains. The boys played some fantastic rugby throughout the day and displayed some wonderful skills for this early in the season. For the third time in as many years the final was contested between Rondebosch and Bishops who finished top of their respective pools. The match lived up to the mouth-watering build up with both teams contributing to a good game. Rondebosch took the early lead, after two magical runs from Mike Mavovana down the Carleton Lloyd Stand touchline that had the Bosch supporters jumping for joy. It was, however, the Bishops boys who had the last say in the first half as they clawed their way back to 17-7.

The Bishops team, who are always dangerous in this format of the game, struck back with another two breakaway tries immediately after the break. This knocked the wind out of us and to the hope of wresting the shield back from our neighbours. The boys never gave up and scored a consolation at the death to end the contest with Bishops deserving winners at A big thank you must go to Eric Scoble and his team at Auric Auto for their contribution to the day and for all that they do for Bosch rugby. It was also great to have the Bosch Rugby Supporters Club on board in a big way this year. We look forward to growing this festival into the premier, schoolboy rugby, preseason outing in the Western Cape. 215 Main Road, Claremont Tel:

NEWLANDS REPORT Sometimes it is good to take your medicine early in the season and to learn valuable lessons before the real stuff hits you. With two and a half days till we were to face Paul Roos the important lesson we took from the tens was not to get too ahead of ourselves: this game has the ability to humble you quickly. One never feels quite prepared, walking through the doors at Newlands, to take on the much talked about Maroon Machine of Paul Roos. As a team we saw this match as a test of our character and an opportunity to tick the important character box as an individual and as a team. With field conditions a bit slippery we managed to halt their early onslaught and then proceeded to surprise them with some good quality play of our own. We generated a couple of penalties from good play, which moved us up the field and into a scoring position. From this attacking lineout maul Rory Thompson took everyone by surprise as he cut through their defence to score almost untouched. The team s confidence began to grow as they started to take the game to the stunned Paul Roos team, who found it difficult to get their game going as they started chasing with time running out quickly. We looked completely in control (as we had two days earlier in the Tens Final), when, all of a sudden, Paul Roos started to claw their way back into the match off some of our mistakes. It took a match-saving tackle from Mike Mavovana at the death to end the match in our favour.

We walked away having ticked the character box plus a couple of extra boxes as a bonus. Our scrum, which was, led by Ashwyn Adams, Russel Eaby and Jordan Diekmann, was extremely dominant which gave us a good platform to attack from. It was also pleasing to see our maul causing havoc as we walked with the Roos pack on a couple of occasions. In very slippery conditions, we also managed to handle the ball well and put some nice rugby together. This win means a lot to the team as we inch forward after being scarred by this very talented Paul Roos team on the Meadows two years ago. They are a very good team and they will bounce back, but for the moment we will take a lot of positives from this match WP RUGBY SCHOOLS DAY RESULTS: (Under-19 matches only; half-time scores in brackets) Stellenberg HS 15 (0) v Wynberg Boys HS 20 (10) SACS 5 (5) Bellville HS 10 (5) Boland Landbou 0 (0) Paarl Boys HS 10 (5) Paarl Gimnasium 30 (15) Tygerberg HS 5 (0) Paul Roos 10 (0) Rondebosch Boys HS 15 (5)

OUTENIQUA Six months ago, when all of the preseason talk and planning started in the Art Studio of Mr. Jenkins, the Outeniqua name and reputation became our focal point. It was only at the warm up when the penny dropped and I realised that the preseason is done and that we are about to find out where we are as a squad.

The win was again taken off the table as we looked to tick another important box on the day. We knew that this Outeniqua team possessed provincial players and that they would come hard after news of our Newlands performance. The Kwaggas kicked off with the sweltering heat blowing in our faces. Our plan to run them off their feet in the first half had us in trouble quickly - their ace goal kicker made his presence felt with a good three pointer to settle the early nerves. It wasn t long before the Bosch boys found their rhythm, and some space out wide, which seemed to have the Kwagga defences on the ropes. However, when they had the ball they looked extremely dangerous and our defences were tested on a couple of occasions.

The boys made it look too easy at times as scoreboard pressure mounted on the stunned Kwaggas. It was pleasing to see the team maintain their intensity throughout the match, knowing full well that the boys from Outeniqua possessed the ability to carve them open if they were allowed to get their tails up.

KES AND NAMIBIA TOURS I am pleased to report that we are in good spirits as a squad at the end of March. It is important for us at this stage that we have ticked some significant mental and physical boxes. We still have a long way to go in terms of the way we would like to play, but the early signs are very positive. We look forward to building on this foundation as we head off to King Edward VII School. There we will face Durban High School on the Thursday and the hosts, who will have the entire Red Army, behind them on Saturday.

From there we venture into the desert and some unknown rugby territory for Bosch: to participate in the Desert Classic in Walvis Bay. We have been warned that the rugby will be tough up on the north west coastline. Apparently one also needs to be wary of the wonderful hospitality which can trip you up, if you are not careful, and cause you to fall into holiday mode. We look forward to the rugby over the next two weeks and are thankful to the school and everyone who makes it possible for us to represent the Bosch family. We are also looking forward to forging some friendships on and off the field in a way that only rugby is able to do. See you behind the poles. CLINT VAN RENSBURG 1 st XV Coach

BOSCH CONDITIONING Our Bosch Conditioning program is still going strong with over 50 boys from the U19 s, 19 boys from the U16 s, 15 boys from the U15 s and 24 boys from the U14 s. It is fantastic to have such a big group of U14 s start formal core, strength and power work from their first term in high school. Well done to the parents, boys and coaches for accepting all of the research that Boksmart and the Sports Science Institute have published on the importance of formal conditioning from a young age. It really bodes well for Bosch rugby that these boys will have had over three years of supervised Rugby Specific Conditioning by the time they play their first U19 match. Please encourage all of the boys to keep attending in season as it is imperative for their maintenance and continued development that they don t stop during this time. If they have a niggle or an injury we simply avoid working that area and focus on other areas. We will ask them to see a physiotherapist who will give us a proper assessment so that we can move forward, but we don t stop working other areas. This is the nature of Rugby Conditioning. Our program continues through all holidays (except for a two week Christmas break). This school holiday we have sessions every normal day, (except weekends and public holidays) from 10:00-11:30. Boys are encouraged to attend for 40-60mins.

There are a few points that I would like everyone to be aware of: 1) There is no such thing as age in the gym/conditioning environment but rather a training age. So if an 18 year old boy has only done strength work for three months then his training age is three months. If a 14 year old boy has done strength work for nine months then his training age is nine months. Chronological age has never been proven to be relevant. However, training age is relevant to what the athlete should be doing. 2) Our program is better than simply going to gym on their own as it is designed, instructed and managed by trained and experienced Rugby Conditioning Coaches. Over time we are able to teach the boys how to train specifically for rugby but it is a process and it is not simply showing them how to perform an exercise. Load, volume, intensity, variation, exercise form, exercise selection and recovery are all factors that need to be taught over time. 3) It takes years of conditioning to develop and does not simply happen a month before season, although one month is better than nothing! The biggest gains will be made off season between September and December and then between January and March. In season it is about maintenance and a small amount of continual development. If however, you don t train in season you lose everything you ve gained. 4) A bigger, stronger, faster and more functional (core) athlete will perform better in all sports so this program will substantially benefit their summer sport!

5) By being stronger, more flexible and more functional (core and specific movement strength) you are able to achieve your athletic potential and are less likely to get injured although collision injuries are not necessarily avoidable. Feel free to contact us should you have any questions. Lastly please ensure you have paid your son s fees if they are taking part. 25 HERMANUS HIGH SCHOOL RUGBY FESTIVAL Over the Human Rights Day weekend Hermanus High School held the annual Nowan Cornelius Rugby Festival. The festival is held in memory of Nowan Cornelius, a Hermanus High School pupil who died tragically as a result of a head injury sustained during a rugby practice in U16A vs BELVILLE HIGH SCHOOL RBHS 38 BELVILLE HS 0 On Friday 20 March the RBHS U16A squad played against Bellville High School. The team was determined to use the opening game of the season as an opportunity to build up momentum and confidence. RBHS scored four tries in the first half, including an outstanding individual try from Dylan Pienaar who, from a kick-off, ran 80 meters to score under the poles. The score at half time was 26-0 in favour of RBHS. Bellville held the majority of possession and territory during the second half; however, some resolute defence ensured the tryline was never compromised. The RBHS scrum was dominant throughout, and the scoring of a further two tries took the score to 38-0 to RBHS at the end of the game. The boys displayed immense team effort and certainly provided us with the start we were looking for. TRIES: Donald Falconer (2), Van der Bijl Blake, Dylan Pienaar, Robert Davis, Suhaib Ajmoodien CONVERSIONS: Samuel Alexander (4) ADAM RUNDLE

U16A vs WORCESTER GIM RBHS 48 vs WORCESTER GIM 0 On Saturday 21 March the RBHS U16A squad was matched against Worcester Gimnasium, a fixture Rondebosch does not usually participate in during the season. Worcester had had a convincing win of over Bellville the day before. Rondebosch continued the momentum from the previous day, using our powerful scrum to dominate the set pieces. We managed to score four unanswered tries by the break and take the lead at The second half was a far more open period of the game. Rondebosch played with more width and allowed the ball an opportunity to work. We scored another four tries and our defence was as solid as the day before. The final score was It was an outstanding start to the 2015 rugby season, with a chance for both players and coaches to test ideas and combinations. We must express a huge thank you to Hermanus High School for organising this special weekend and to Bellville High School and Worcester Gimnasium for providing us with strong opposition. We are certainly looking forward to an eventful 2015 rugby season. 27 U15 A RUGBY HERMANUS FESTIVAL The season started with a tour to Hermanus and, although not the preparation that we had wanted, it was still a big opportunity for the boys. We played the first match against Hermanus and the team just scraped by with a win. The second game we played against Strand and we lost the match This was a great lesson and a great opportunity for the U15 squad. There is a lot of hard work left for us as coaches and players but we know we have the ability to be a great team. EMILE BAM

U14A vs STRAND RBHS 7 STRAND 13 We played a very big Strand side that we, surprisingly, dominated early on at scrum time and in the tight forward exchanges. Unfortunately, from secure set phases, backline distribution was under pressure and we could not capitalise on our forward domination in order to cross the chalk. In addition, we had limited time to put together a structured defensive plan and, as a result, we had gaping holes when they ran attacking lines at us with their skilful backline. The try we scored was a gem from a set scrum move, whereby number 8, Matthew Macleod Smith, went wide and passed inside to open side flanker, Josh King. Stopped metres from the line, we gained a resultant penalty from which Jason Johnson darted over and Yasin Hartley converted. WAYNE SWANEPOEL

U14A vs BREDASDORP RBHS 0 BREDASDORP 0 In the morning we made some positional changes to the backline and had a quick 45 minute session before going to the stadium to watch the U15A s play. A trip down to the tidal pool afterwards, provided a break for the boys as the kick off was only at 15h00. The boys started the game with a strong wind behind their backs. The forwards were even more dominant than the day before, taking no fewer than five tight heads! The Bosch side camped in the Bredasdorp 22m for eighty percent of the first half, but couldn t get over the line until scrumhalf, Gustaf Pienaar, charged down an in goal line kick and scored. The referee adjudged it to be a knock on and gave a scrum to Bredasdorp. After 20 minutes of scrum domination their coach requested the ref to go to non contact scrums - a huge compliment to our scrumming prowess! However, we were not in a hurry to relinquish our advantage so the status quo remained. With the full bench on after half time, our scrums did not waiver. Our forward driving and possession retention was good and our backline distribution, as a whole, improved. Yet we did not have the essential firepower to break the opposition line defence. The game ended 0-0. The challenge for the season is to quickly weave a skilful backline into the setup, to take advantage of the go forward ball presented by the forwards and to get the necessary opportunities (in opposition defensive line structures) to score. WAYNE SWANEPOEL

RHONDDA TOURING TEAM FROM WALES U15A vs RHONDDA RBHS 0 RHONDDA 17 Playing a touring side gave us another opportunity to look at some other players and try to strengthen our squad. Looking at the team and how they warmed up we knew this was going to be a difficult challenge. Playing some hard rugby Rondebosch was just not used to the style and aggression shown by Rhondda Schools Rugby. We never really got going with our attack as the touring side always tested the offside lines and got away with it, which put us under pressure. Rhondda Schools Rugby won the game but there were a lot of positives that we can take away and work with. This season is going to be a great challenge for us as a team, but we are ready to work hard.
