T20 - DAY NIGHT RONDEBOSCH U19A vs BISHOPS The annual Day/Night game is always a much anticipated event as the boys get to showcase their skills in front of a large crowd. Despite the change in format from a 45 over game to a T20, the boys were still very excited on arrival at the Frank Reid Oval. Bosch Old Boy, Taariq Chiecktey, handed out the jerseys and spoke passionately about the importance of playing from the heart for the good of the team. After losing the toss, the Bosch boys took to the field and struggled initially as the Bishops openers took advantage of the early fielding restrictions to hit some boundaries. Samuel Alexander turned the game by removing both openers in quick succession. The loss of wickets slowed down the scoring rate and Guy Sheena maintained the pressure with a tight spell of off spin bowling, finishing with 3 for 16 in his four overs. The fielding was of a very high standard throughout the innings and this resulted in two run outs which helped us to restrict Bishops to 108 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs.

Our run chase started well with Steven Reingold and Gabriel Gad looking in control, however, we went from 44 for 0 to 76 for 5 to leave the game very much in the balance. Guy Sheena was joined at the crease by Cole Walbrugh and it was Sheena who took the attack back to the Bishops bowlers. Sheena struck two large sixes in the seventeenth over and this allowed us to cruise to victory in the next over to record a five wicket win and to make it six in a row for the Bosch boys in the Day/Night Derby.

U19A vs PEARSON Fresh off the victory in the Day /Night game we arrived in Port Elizabeth to take on the up and coming school, Pearson, in a 50 over match. It seemed as if our top order was still very much in T20 mode as some adventurous stroke-play caused dismissals to the top order and, at the halfway stage of our innings, we found ourselves in the precarious position of being 55 for 6. Lehan Botha (59) was still at the crease and together with Douglas Cox, the pair began to repair the damage with a disciplined approach to their batting. Daniel Moriarty added some valuable runs at the end of the innings as we managed to get to 145 for 7 after our 50 overs. We knew that we needed to bowl well to defend this and we started well with Nic Robinson and Moriarty striking early to set the hosts back. We managed to keep the pressure on the batsmen throughout the innings with Guy Sheena (4 for 34) and Samuel Alexander (3 for 32) getting the best returns as we bowled them out for 118 to secure a 28 run victory. 13 U19A vs GREY We were met by some scorching weather on Saturday at Grey in Port Elizabeth and we had no hesitation in batting first on a good looking wicket. Some good bowling in the first session saw us on 65 for 3 when Gabriel Gad joined Justin Broad at the crease. The two batted beautifully in tandem as they were well-disciplined in defence, but continued to attack loose deliveries. The pair put on a partnership of 141 that took us to over 200. Broad eventually fell on 87, but Gad pushed through to record his debut century for the 1 st XI, going to his century off 152 balls. We stuttered a little towards the end of the innings, but were well-satisfied with 242 for 6 off our 80 overs. We took to the field in the afternoon with the clouds gathering and managed to pick up two wickets before lightning curtailed proceedings for the day. Day two saw the Grey batsmen build a partnership upfront and, with us missing a few chances, they began to push the scoring rate along. Daniel Moriarty provided the breakthrough and Steven Reingold picked up the other inbatter and suddenly the spinners ripped through the middle and lower order to bowl the hosts out for 160. This gave us a lead of 82 runs going into the second innings. Moriarty picked up another five wicket haul, finishing with figures of 5 for 49.

Reingold (41) started briskly with the bat as we tried to get to a position where we could declare and leave ourselves enough overs to bowl the hosts out for a second time. In the quest for quick runs we lost a few wickets but it was the weather that had the final say in the match as the rain came down at 2.00pm and ended the contest. It was a very enjoyable tour and the boys learned a lot from the experience.

RESULTS RONDEBOSCH VS PEARSON HIGH SCHOOL (FRIDAY, 10 FEBRUARY 2017): Rondebosch 145/7 in 50 overs. Pearson 118/10 in 41.4 overs. Won by 27 runs. Lehan Botha scored 59 runs. Guy Sheena took 4/31 & Samuel Alexander took 3/32. RONDEBOSCH VS GREY HIGH SCHOOL (SATURDAY & SUNDAY FEBRUARY 2017): Rondebosch 242/6 in 80 overs. Grey 160/10. Rondebosch 89/5 in 26.1 overs. Rain meant that the match was a dull draw (We were leading by 171 runs). Gabriel Gad scored a 100 runs & Justin Broad scored 87 runs. Steven Reingold scored 41 runs. Daniel Moriarty took 5 wickets.

U19B vs PEARSON The 50 over match on Sunday against Pearson saw us posing a decent 215/9 in overcast conditions. Ethan Nates (44 runs), Kyle Lesch (34 runs) and Keegan Mountjoy (32 runs) all kept the scoreboard going. Again our bowlers struggled to penetrate their batting order and they passed our total with nine wickets down in the third to last over. Pearson therefore won this match by one wicket.

U19B vs GREY After a long ten hour drive, the boys arrived in Port Elizabeth just in time to see our 1 st XI pull off a victory in a low-scoring 50 overs match against Pearson. We lost the toss against Grey High on the Saturday morning and they decided to bat in this declaration match. Batting conditions were good. Their batsmen piled up the runs and continued to bat after lunch to utilise their full complement of 65 overs and finish their innings on 305/5. This mammoth score was out of reach since the first delivery and the rain saved the match for us on 79/5. It was again clear that our lack of penetration in our bowling department is still a major concern. The match eventually ended in a draw.

U17A vs NEWLANDS CRICKET U19A The U17As took on a determined Newlands Cricket High School in the first of our declaration fixtures this year. Two relatively early breakthroughs were nullified by a third wicket stand of 130 runs. A boundary ball an over assisted Newlands in amassing a total of 312, eventually being bowled out on the penultimate delivery of their innings. Damian Sparks and Michael Moore were good value for their four wickets each. Zachary Schmidt (44) and Sparks (69) showed excellent resolve, but in general the Bosch batting display lacked a sense of maturity and responsibility in the match situation. This left the tailenders 20 overs to negate for a draw - a task which they very nearly achieved. The final wicket was taken with only 12 deliveries remaining in the match, handing Newlands a comprehensive 119 run victory. It is in tough situations, like these in which the U17As find themselves currently, that individual resolve is required. Tough times don t last, but tough teams do and it is now up to everyone involved to motivate more, inspire more and to push each other to get better. 26 U15A vs GREY PE (Time format) There are certain games in the year where the boys need to stand up and show what they have got and this is one of them. Playing Grey at Grey is always a challenge. Playing without Reese Scheepers due to illness and Kian Davis due to injury didn t make it any easier. Winning the toss we elected to bowl first. We got two quick wickets and had them 21 for 2. But, with some great batting from Grey PE, they ended up with 306/6 after 62 overs. Jacques Duminy was the bowler with the best figures - four wickets for 83 runs off 24 overs. RBHS struggled from the start and we ended up with 62/5. Then the match got rained out. Do think we as a team learned a lot from this game? Time will tell. U15A vs PEARSON (50 overs) After a long talk with the boys we knew, as a team, that we needed to put together a good performance. We won the toss and elected to bat on a university field that was big and a wicket that was very slow. Not a lot of boundaries were scored on the day. RBHS ended up with a good score of 191/5. Quinn van Oordt was Bosch s top scorer with 72 not out followed by Cameron van Rensburg with 42 runs. Pearson was never in the game with some good bowling and great pressure they only scored 107/9 after 50 overs. Quinn van Oordt was the bowler with the best figures - four wickets for nine runs off 10 overs. RBHS won by 83 runs.

U14A vs GREY (Declaration) The tour to Port Elizabeth was a great opportunity for the cricket side to develop and compete against a top side from the Eastern Cape. Rondebosch won the toss and elected to bat on a small field. This was a much better batting performance and Cameron Fraser (43) and Stijn Bakker (31) put in the hard yards to see Rondebosch put together a 61 run partnership for the second wicket. Up front the openers scored freely and Grey soon resorted to defensive tactics to try and reign the Bosch batsmen in. This they managed well in protecting the boundary and slowing down the match with some accurate spin bowling. Rondebosch have progressively improved but arguably could have attacked the spin more. Though Ethan Cunningham displayed the right resolve and discipline to mix attack with defence and put the Grey bowlers under real pressure. Grey probably felt relieved that they restricted the Bosch batsmen to 222. The opening bowling pair of Bukhobakhe Masumpa and Fraser had the Grey batsmen playing and missing. A beautiful catch by keeper, Nathan Schoultz, off the bowling of Masumpa, had the dangerous Grey opener dismissed, decidedly damaging his average of 80 prior to the match. The Rondebosch bowlers continued to bowl wicket-taking balls and Max Orgovanyi dismissed the number three and four batsmen with some good swing bowling. Grey continued attacking the Rondebosch bowling and a brilliant run-out by Orgovanyi put the game on a knife edge as the top order were now back in the hut. It was, however, lightning that intervened to decide the fate of the match: Grey was on 168/5 when the match was called off and a draw declared. This match showed some promising progress by the U14A side.

U14A vs PEARSON (50 0VERS) This match will be remembered for the team effort and the way the boys played for each other. Rondebosch won the toss and, after some debate about local conditions, decided to bat. The ball did come on a bit more in early conditions and Albertus Van der Merwe (48) and Stijn Bakker (25) set a solid foundation to put on 44 runs for the first wicket. Brandon Jones (43) rotated strike superbly to lay the foundation for Max Orgovanyi (32), Nathan Schoultz (14 off 7) and Cameron Fraser (35 off 25) to give the score board a healthy look at 260 for 8. Rain threatened and Rondebosch needed wickets. Fraser got the early breakthrough but the pitch was slowing dramatically. Siviwe Nkonzombi bowled with good flight variation to begin exerting pressure on the Pearson batsmen. He took two wickets in the process. John Vermaak was absolutely brilliant in his assessment of the conditions and, once again, a clever spell of bowling earned him four wickets. This tandem bowling ended any hopes of a successful run chase and it was just a matter of time before Pearson succumbed to the mounting run-rate. Pearson was bowled out for 115 and Rondebosch won by 149 runs. The only disappointment in this match was that a Rondebosch batsman has yet to pass the 50 run mark.

U14A vs EDGEMEAD U15A Rondebosch, having entered the U15 Western Province T20 knockout, drew Edgemead in their first match. Stijn Bakker lost the toss and Edgemead elected to bat. Rondebosch was soon putting the pressure on with the opening bowlers bowling consistently in the right area. Joshua Kirsten (1/6 in four) struck first blood to bowl the opening batsman. John Vermaak was absolutely brilliant in the bowling department and his clever variation of pace and use of the pitch conditions, netted him a return of 4/7 off four overs. Taking the pace off the ball proved to be the key. Brandon Jones bowled to the situation to finish with two wickets for five runs. Edgemead was all out for 59. Rondebosch have been struggling in the batting department of late and, on a tricky pitch, it looked like this might continue. However, Jones, on debut, showed good mental application to finish unbeaten on 13 and Cameron Fraser gave good momentum to the innings, scoring a classy 15 off 12 balls. This gave Rondebosch a convincing victory in 10 overs, with seven wickets remaining.
