The month began with the Fairview Trail Run at Beverly Park on the southwest side of Cedar Rapids. We saw excellent weather and excellent turnout for The Return of the Turkey Trot in Marion. Even the CVRA s Thanksgiving morning group run, Run Turkey Run, had temperatures in the 50 s. Unfortunately, soon the reality of Iowa winter will set in and the enthusiasm many have for running will be, pardon the expression, put on ice. Hopefully, like last year there will be breaks in the weather where outdoor running can happen, but if not look for opportunities to work out indoors to stay in shape. A good reason to stay active this winter is that we ll be having a new marathon event this coming April in Marion. The Marion Rotary Club will be putting on this event which will include a half marathon as well as shorter distances. It ll be great to have a marathon in our community and hopefully it gives many of us a good reason to stay active this winter. 3 Thanksgiving + Running + Sharing = Run Turkey Run REMEMBER For all the latest news and photos from the CVRA, be sure to friend us on Facebook If you d like to know how beautiful the weather was on Thanksgiving, all you have to do is ask one of the 50 + CVRA members who took part in this year s Run Turkey Run group run. Runners congregated at the Franklin Middle School Softball field at 8:00 AM Thanksgiving morning for a 5ish mile run through the northeast side of Cedar Rapids. The morning was slightly overcast with a temperature of 50 degrees. Run Turkey Run is an annual group run for CVRA members who are looking to be a little proactive in dealing with their projected holiday weight gains. The run serves not only as a means of fitting into your jeans the day after but also as a way to give back to the community. Participants are encouraged to bring food items that will be donated to the Madge Phillips Center who will distribute them to needy families in our area. With approximately 50 runners and walkers showing up, enough food was collected to fill a large tub. Now just because it was a holiday, it didn t mean that the runners were going to have an easy go of it. The run began easily enough down Prairie Drive but then came the loop through Mt. Mercy University. Runners did get a nice straight run down 27th street and back, but upon reaching 1st Avenue there was the climb up the crosswalk, down to the other side of 1st Avenue, and then back over again. Then we were back at Mt Mercy, trekking to the top of the hill one more time. The run ended where it began at the softball field where members took the opportunity to chit chat before cleaning up and heading to their holiday feasts. Freezefest 5K Registration Is The CVRA 2013 racing season begins on February 23rd with our annual Freeezefest 5K at Squaw Creek Park in Marion. The race begins at 11:00 and is followed by the club s annual social event at the pavilion from noon to 4:00. You can register now on-line at RUNNING WALL Page 3

Return of the Turkey Trot 5K & 8K Runs Marion, IA November 10, 2012 The Return of the Turkey Trot doesn t seem to be an event that takes a lot of prodding to get runners interested. With the three events; a wheelchair race, a 5K and an 8K race run simultaneously, though with a staggered start, the day saw nearly 2000 athletes participate. The race begins and ends at the Marion High School where afterwards a pancake breakfast is served in the gymnasium. The staggered start allows the more competitive 8K runners to start ahead of the 5K ers who can choose to either run or walk the event. The event is run primarily through residential neighborhoods in Marion that feature gentle hills but then, as is usually the case with races in Marion, the course take a familiar jaunt through Oak Shade Cemetery was the 20th anniversary of the Return of the Turkey Trot. The event is organized by the First United Methodist Church of Marion and put on with the help of hundreds of volunteers. Proceeds from the race benefit the programs of both Horizons, A Family Service Alliance and FLY Marion. The Return of the Turkey Trot is a well organized event that has great participation and local support, a pancake breakfast, and even Scooby Doo. If you haven t yet had the opportunity to run this event, you should add it to your calendar for 2013 and bring the family. Page 5 Page 4

5 Running Tips for The Traveler By: Janine Wasson Have you renewed your CVRA membership? People say running is the easiest sport to start. All you need is a pair of shoes and you are ready. While that is true, how do you determine where to run? If you are familiar with the area you are in such as your neighborhood or home town, you know where it s safe to run and where it s not. What happens when you travel or are in a new place and by yourself? How do you know where and when it s safe to run? As a business traveler I have faced this on numerous occasions. If you are staying at a hotel you can always ask the front desk personnel. I ve done this with limited success as many times I have found most front desk workers to be nonrunners who don t have any idea where a good 5 mile route would be. Recently on a business trip to Jacksonville, FL, I found myself wanting to run with no clue as to where it was safe to do so. My hotel was sandwiched between two very busy highways. I started driving to get a sense of the area when I saw it. The Jacksonville Running Company. Jacksonville s independent running store, the equivalent to our Running Wild stores. Stopping at the store I met Bobby one of the managers of the store. Bobby proceeded to provide me a map with a couple trail routes that I could run. I also inquired if they had group runs on the weekends. Indeed they did and I made arrangements to run the next morning with one of their members who was training for her first half marathon. The next morning I met up with Jennifer and we set out for a 10 mile run. Finding a local running store in a town you are visiting will allow you to find safe route and talk with others about running and tips. If you can t find a local running store ask co-workers who are runners, or set out on your own. If you do the later make sure you leave word with someone where you are going. Be safe. The answer to your problem is as close as the internet. If the event you ran was one of the CVRA s you can find a link to the results at CVRA.net. Many races in our area feature their own website where results would also be posted. If neither one of these work for your particular event then try the Results link of the Fitness Sports.com at: Fitness Sports has the most comprehensive listing of race results and even lists results for the past several years.
