Brown Field House will host the 2011 Indoor Track & Field Championships Feb in Annapolis, Md. Army men, Bucknell women look to defend their titles Today s Scholar-Athletes, Tomorrow s Leaders The Patriot League continually demonstrates that student-athletes can excel at both academics and athletics without sacrificing its high standards. The Patriot League s athletic success is achieved while its member institutions remain committed to its founding principle of admitting and graduating student-athletes that are academically representative of their class. Participation in athletics at Patriot League institutions is viewed as an important component of a well-rounded education Corporate Parkway, Suite 190 Center Valley, Pa ; Fax Center Valley, Pa. This year s indoor championships will be held at the U.S. Naval Academy Feb in Annapolis, Md. It will be the first time since the championships and the fourth time overall that the meet will be held at Navy. The Army men and the Navy women won the titles the last time the championships were held at Wesley Brown Field House. Army has won 14 of the last 17 Patriot League Men s Indoor Track and Field titles and Black Knights are primed to do it again in Only three schools have claimed the Patriot League Championship in indoor track and field Army (14 times), Navy (3) and Bucknell (3) and after the regular season, those same three teams will be tussling for the top spot. Navy has had the highest regional ranking all season, reaching as high as No. 2 in the Mid-Atlantic Region. The Mids are currently fourth in the latest USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Regional poll. Army, which defeated Navy Feb. 5 at West Point, is ranked eighth in the Northeast Region and Bucknell is ninth in the Mid-Atlantic. The women s side has had the same three schools win the title over the last 20 years (outside of former member Fordham s title in the inaugural year). Bucknell has won 13 titles, Army four and Navy two. The Navy women are the only Patriot League team ranked in the latest USTFCCCA NCAA Division I Regional poll. The Mids are 15th in the Mid-Atlantic Region. Navy finished first in four of five regular-season events, led by Jess Palacio, who set the new League record for Track Athlete of the Week awards with four. She is the defending indoor champion in the mile, and she won the 800 and the 1,500 during the outdoor season en route to Patriot League Track Athlete of the Meet honors. On the men s side, Bucknell s Leonard Joseph tied the record for Field Athlete of the Week awards with his four selections. Joseph won the weight throw in his last outing, posting a mark of 57-5¾, a career best. He has recorded an IC4A-qualifying mark on six occa- Continued on Page 2 1

Robert Arent, who won the Track Athlete of the Week award three times, also will be a driving force for the Bison. The Navy men have been led by their distance runners. As of Feb. 2, the Mids had 28 entries in the regional rankings (top-20) and also two relay teams. Navy s top-regionally ranked runner is senior Andrew Hanko at No. 2 in the 5,000 (14:29.37). Hanko also is ranked fifth in the region in the mile (4:06.08). Along with Hanko, sophomores Dean Black (fourth, 14:36.98) and Kyle Satterwhite (sixth, 8:19.33) and seniors Robert Alvarado (eighth, 14:42.69) and Matthew De Schedule Villers (10th, 14:45.77) appear in the top 10 in the 5,000. Junior Cody Rome is ranked sixth in the 3,000 (8:12.91) and seventh in the mile (4:06.72). The Army men return two record-setters from last season s meet. Domonick Sylve set the new League record in the 60 hurdles and Alfred Mc- Daniel did the same in the 60 dash. Sylve became the first Patriot League athlete in history to break eight seconds in the event, crossing the line in McDaniel finished his race in 6.85 seconds. The individual champions will earn First-Team All-Patriot League honors, while the individual runner-ups will earn Second-Team All-Patriot League honors. FRIDAY, FEB :00 p.m... Arent wins his third Track Athlete of the Week award after qualifying for the 60 hurdles with an IC4Aqualifying time of 6.19 seconds. He finished first in the race at the Bucknell Winter Classic, and he finished second in the 200 dash with a time of 22.48, which is 0.24 seconds short of another IC4A mark. Female Track Athlete of the Week JESS PALACIO, NAVY Jr., Sun Valley, Nev. Palacio broke her own school record in the 800 with an ECAC-qualifying time of 2:07.27 and a first-place finish at the Navy Sweetheart Meet. Palacio earns her fourth Track Athlete of the Week this season, breaking the single-season Patriot League record of three set by Bucknell s Christa Sawko ( ) Male Field Athlete of the Week LEONARD JOSEPH, BUCKNELL So., Whitesboro, N.Y. Joseph wins his fourth Field Athlete weekly award, tying a single-season record set by Bucknell s Tyler Hoffman ( ). Joseph surpassed an IC4A standard in the weight throw with a toss of meters, nearly a meter better than the standard (16.80). It was a career-best throw and ranked fifth in Bucknell history. It was the longest throw since Hoffman broke the record in Female Field Athlete of the Week KACI CLARK, ARMY Sr., Fayetteville, Ga. Clark finished first in the pole vault (3.80) at the Saturday Night at The Armory III meet, qualifying for the ECAC Championships. She wins the Female Athlete of the Week award for the second time this season. male Rookie of the Week CHRIS SACKS, BUCKNELL Fr., Pound Ridge, N.Y. Sacks posted an IC4A-qualifying time in the 800 (1:52.89) at the Bucknell Winter Classic to win his second Rookie of the Week award. He has qualified for the IC4A Championships in three events (800, 1,000 and mile). Female Rookie of the Week BETH BRAUNEGG, BUCKNELL Fr., Williamsport, Pa. Braunegg is the fourth different and fifth overall Bucknell freshman to win Rookie of the Week this season. She qualified for the ECAC Championships with a time of 2:53.75 in the 1,000, finishing first at the Bucknell Winter Classic. Honorable mention ALEXIS TORRE-SANTIAGO, ARMY Sr., Fort Monmouth, N.J. Torre-Santiago finished first in the 1,000 (2:25.04) at Saturday Night at The Armory III, meeting an IC4A standard. SCOTT GEARY, ARMY So., Sheridan, Wyo. Geary placed third in the shot put (15.89) at the Saturday Night at The Armory III meet, qualifying for the IC4A Championships. PATRICK CIEZ, LEHIGH Fr., Windham, Maine Ciez met the IC4A-qualifying mark again in the high jump with his mark of 2.04 meters at the Saturday Night at The Armory III meet. E LANA LEMON, LEHIGH So., West Orange, N.J. Lemon hit an ECAC mark at the Saturday Night at The Armory III meet in the weight throw (16.76). REBECCA FREY, BUCKNELL Sr., Bethlehem, Pa. Frey finished first in the pole vault (3.60) at the Bucknell Winter Classic, qualifying for the ECAC Championships. PAUL NEIDHARDT, NAVY Jr., Lawrenceville, Ga.
