1 UCLA won it s fourth consecutive Pac-10 title, and 11th overall, with a narrow victory over USC. The six and one-half point margin of victory was the closest in championship history. The Bruins took top honors in five of the eight field events, including the top three spots in the pole vault. UCLA s Seilala Sua was honored for the second consecutive year as the Pac-10 Women s Track and Field Athlete of the Year. Not only did Sua take top honors in the shot put (17.31m/56-9 1/2) and discus (62.50m/205-1) at the Pac-10 championships, she also successfully defended her title in both events (shot m/ /2, discus m/200-9) at the NCAA Championships. With four discus titles and two shot put titles, Sua became the first woman to win six NCAA Outdoor individual titles. With her title in the discus, she becomes the second woman in NCAA Outdoor history to win four consecutive individual titles in one event. USC was the top finishing Pac-10 team at the NCAA Championships with a second place showing, while UCLA placed third. In addition to Sua, other Pac-10 competitors capturing NCAA titles included USC s Angela Williams (100 meters) and Natasha Danvers (400-meter hurdles), UCLA s Tracy O Hara (pole vault) and USC s 4x100 meter relay team. STANFORD s Lauren Fleshman was named the Pac-10 Newcomer of the Year. The freshman finished second (4:21.28) in the 1,500 meters at the Pac-10 Championships and fifth (4:17.76) at the NCAA Championships. Her 5,000 meters time of 15:50.18 was tops in the Conference this season. UCLA s Jeanette Bolden was named the women s Coach of the Year. It was her fourth consecutive women s coaching honor and her sixth in the last seven years as UCLA women s team captured its fourth consecutive Conference championship, and the 11th Pac-10 title in 14 attempts PAC-10 TRACK & FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS (14th Annual) MAY 20-21, University of Oregon, Hayward Field, Eugene, Ore.
