We all have heard somehow that the Catholic Church does not support the celebration of Halloween and does not welcome its pagan and satanic spirit. It becomes so hard when the culture imposes on us things that contradict with our faith and sometimes we are obliged to be part of it. Halloween is one of the biggest holidays in the United States. Since our childhood we have been always waiting for that holiday every year. It is the time for trick-or-treat. It is a time to put those costumes on and to celebrate with our families and friends. Why isn't Halloween embraced by the Catholic Church? How can we celebrate it without being unfaithful to the teaching of our Church? As Christians we are very well known in how we can turn what is pagan into what can serve our faith. Was not December 25th the feast of the sun and we turned it into the feast of the real light, Jesus Christ? And many other Christians holidays are like that. Halloween can still be celebrated if we remove from it the satanic side and put God in. For example, our costume does not need to be that of Satan or death. We can still celebrate while everybody is celebrating but in a Christian way that fits God s image in us. As Christians who are enlightened by the word of God, the truth of everything. Here are some ways that make us engaged in Halloween evangelism. Some will have a big No for that celebration, either they do not want their kids to dress up in costumes for trick-or-treating or even attending Halloween alternatives. Those parents have a big responsibility to explain to their kids why not! Other will opt for Halloween alternatives like the Harvest Festivals where the kids dress up as farmers, Bible Characters And actually, even if some will see it ironic when we consider Halloween s beginning as an alternative, but it is a very effective way to reach out to neighbors and families with the Gospel. At the end, to participate in Halloween is a matter of conscience before God. Then the king will say to those at his right hand, Come, you that are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world; for I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you gave me clothing, I was sick and you took care of me, I was in prison and you visited me. Then the righteous will answer him, Lord, when was it that we saw you hungry and gave you food, or thirsty and gave you something to drink? And when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you, or naked and gave you clothing? And when was it that we saw you sick or in prison and visited you? And the king will answer them, Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.
