1 COMMODORE S COMMENTS Spring has arrived in Wisconsin. You can tell by the temperature. One day it approaches 80 degrees and the following day it is in the 40 s. Every year I get the urge, and plant flowers too early, only to move the pots either into the house, or next to it. At least our boat is not yet in the water. Russ always feels we should wait until after Mother s Day. Guess he learned a lesson one year when an early morning storm threw him off the boat into the lake. Thanks to the Schneckenberg s for arranging the dinner at The Fox and Hounds. It is such a nice setting and we had a great turnout for a yummy dinner. The White Elephant auction was a success. Dave Dorner makes a great auctioneer with his creative names for the items up for bid. chaired by Peggy and Joe Miotke also bought out a lot of our members to Bullwinkle s. I recently read an article in Boat U.S. Magazine on Building Up America s Boat Clubs. While the article was geared more to Yacht Clubs, it had some good ideas. The article indicated that there was a time when clubs had to do nothing to succeed, but times have changed, and the days of people walking up to join an organization are gone. The article emphasized reaching out to potential members by welcoming new members, especially via social media. One suggestion was to integrate clubs into the local community by participation in community fund raising efforts, such as water front clean-up, food and book drives. These efforts show that your club is active and in tune with the times of your location. If anyone knows of activities we can participate in, be sure to inform the group. There may be some things we can get involved in as a club. Hope to see you all at the Shove Off Spree at the Seven Seas on May 6 th, and on the 23 rd of May. Get those bottoms painted. It is time to launch those boats. Name the most stagnant large body of seawater in the world. 2. You've made a nice day's run, but as you enter the big harbor where you'll be spending a day or two, the fog settles in, thick and dense. You poke your way in, groping from one buoy to the next. From dead ahead, you hear a bell jangle rapidly for about five seconds. Immediately after the bell, you hear a gong. Next, you here a loud blast: one short, one long, one short. Then the bell goes again, followed by the gong, etc. You can find no navigation aids with those characteristics. What in the blazes is going on? 3. In your little fishing boat, you're on the way home with a good catch. A big power cruiser appears up ahead on your port bow. The bearing seems to remain constant, which indicates that you're soon going to try to share the same little patch of water. What should happen in this situation? 4. Which is the smallest and shallowest of the oceans? 5. In pleasant weather, while on a 30-mile passage along a desolate shore, you spot a small cruising sailboat about a mile off course. Looking through your binoculars, you can see no one in the cockpit. The boat's mainsail is not set; however, a small, fluttering jib is hoisted upside down. What should you do? 3 MINUTES OF THE APRIL 21, 2016 MEETING OF MILWAUKEE BOAT CLUB The Milwaukee Boat Club Membership meeting was called to order at 7:00 p.m., at the Wauwatosa Lion s Club, by Commodore, Mary Berg. The minutes of the prior meeting were approved as published in the Runabouter. Mary thanked Dave Dorner for volunteering to be the auctioneer at tonight s White Elephant. Scott Burke, Vice Commodore, reminded us of the upcoming events. Shove Off Spree at the Seven Seas on May 6th, and to get your money into Connie Heyden. Miotkes are holding a Happy Hour at Bullwinkle s on April 25th. Vance and Kathy Werner will host the May on the 23rd of May. Joe Miotke informed the group that the former Waukesha Cruise Fleet is having a dinghy run on the Wolf River on June 11th and the Milwaukee Boat Club is invited. Grey Halstead was in line at 5:00 a.m. to secure McKinley for our Champagne and Cold Duck on June 4th. One other person was there and in line mere seconds before Grey. As luck would have it, he wanted the same date. Consequently, the Champagne and Cold Duck event with be on Sunday, June 5th. Grey was given a round of applause. Senior Pilot, Connie Heyden, through Dave Schneckenberg, reported to get your payments in by the 27th of April for the Shove off Spree. Dave offered to take the funds if anyone at the meeting was interested. Dave Schneckenberg, Purser, reported that our funds were at $3,490. So far we ve received $ in advertising (Thank you, Pete Merryfield). Our expenses included $75.00 for the use of the Lion s Club facility, $79.97 for refreshments, $17.85 for engraving the Fickle Finger of Fate, and $4.22 for keys. Past Commodore, Jim Heyden, no report. Director of Membership, Bonnie Merryfield, The 2016 MBC Directories will be available for pick-up at the Shove-Off-Spree. If you won t be attending, make arrangements for someone to pick-up your directories, so we re able to reduce the number we have to mail. Bob Kowalski, no report. Director of House and Equipment, Tom McElwee, reported that the consensus was that the Lion s Club was working well for our meetings. Leo Wagner, Director of Refreshments, left the wine and beer for tonight s meeting with the Berg s, since Leo was in Florida. Wayne Happel on behalf of LMYA, informed us about the Milwaukee Harbor and Safety Committee meeting where 35 attendees were present. There were 91 water rescues last year. In addition, four boats hit the break wall in 2015, and they expect that number to increase, as with the water level of Lake Michigan being higher, it will be harder to see at night. Wayne informed the group that there is a new strobe light device that can be purchased for $100, and it can be utilized in place of flares. Lake Shore State Park, across from Discovery World, is in the works at a cost of 4.9 Million. Ground breaking will be in the fall of 2017, with completion in the spring of Dave Dorner, Runabouter Editor and Web Master, said the web site calendar was updated, and if you had any ads, get them to Dave for publication. Pete Merryfield, Director of Advertising, no report. No Scuttlebutt report. No report on Dry Dock and Welfare from Charlene Zierden. Mary updated the group on Pete Merryfield s trip to Moffit Cancer Center in Tampa the day before. Club Sales, Nancy Grabowski, no report. There was no old or new business, as the pizzas from Balistreri s had arrived. The dates to remember: The Shove Off Spree on May 6th at 7 Seas. at Bullwinkles on April 25th, and Monday Madness on May 23rd. The meeting was adjourned at 7:45 p.m. Respectfully Submitted, Russ Berg Yeoman 3

The Black Sea, joined to the Sea of Marmara by the Bosporus (strait). (The Sea of Marmara, in turn, is connected to the Mediterranean by the Dardanelles, or Hellespoint, another strait.) 2. There's a big ship anchored dead ahead. She's giving you the standard fog signals; the bell is a common; the gong indicates that she's more than 100 meters (328 feet) long. The horn is an optional big-ship signal, generally used when there's the possibility of a collision. The big ship probably has you on her radar and is doing everything she can to warn you against running into her. 3. The big cruiser, which has you in what is called his danger zone (from dead ahead to 22 1/2 degrees abaft his starboard beam), should alter course. He's the "give-way" or "burdened" vessel. You are the "stand-on" or "privileged" vessel. However, if the cruiser doesn't do something soon, you'd be wise to assume that the dope either doesn't know the rules or maybe is on autopilot while he's below making his bimbo a drink. The safe thing to do would be to make a distinctive turn to your left. 4. The Arctic Ocean 5. In advertently or otherwise, the sailboat is flying a distress signal: anything hoisted upside down. You are obligated -- both by tradition and marine law -- to investigate. 4

5 Travels, Trips or just on the spur of the moment. Planning an excursion up, down or across the lake and looking for fellow boaters to travel with (there s always safety in numbers), or the day looks to be great and a great opportunity for an impromptu raft off, trip up the river or a day trip on the lake and want company? I will be glad to send a blast out to the membership. Just call me at or to david@milwaukeeboatclub.com A Successful White Elephant Auction! MBC ers gathered at the Tosa Lions Clubroom for our April meeting and White Elephant Auction on the 21st of April. Auctioneer Dave along with his assistants Vanna Madison and Van Gavin sold an abundance of precious, semi-precious and not so precious items donated by the gatherers. The most coveted item, a vintage 1960 s Marquette Warrior hat with the beat Notre Dame message, went to Joe Miotke. Other items sold were wine, lighthouse puzzle, glass pitcher, beer glasses, a night cap for a doll, picture frames, duck cozies and, of course, a white elephant. Proceeds from the auction covered the pizza that was ordered in with enough left over to add $16 into the kitty. Members brought appetizers and desserts to satisfy the hungry crowd. - Dave Dorner Fox and Hounds Thirty-two people attended the annual Fox and Hounds event in Hubertus on April 6th for the special of the buy one entree get the second one free dinner. Members first gathered for drinks and good conversation. Everyone then moved into the Porch Room where they enjoyed a delicious meal followed by a yummy cake dessert. This event was again a huge success! Your Ad could be here! 5
