1 Dog Tales May 2018 Ladies Sail - Miami to Key West 2018 Crew members: Pat Pardekooper, Captain; Lori Conway, Melissa Hunter, Cathleen Johnson, Linda Johnson, and Anne Andres We all met in Miami airport on April 3rd and changes started early. We were to meet our boat at the Miami Yacht Club but due to the height of the mast (over 65 foot) the boat was unable to go under the foot bridge. The boat was docked at Dinner Key Marina instead which was badly damaged by the hurricane. Huge marina with cement docks mostly gone. Inside this issue: Sailing Schedule 3 Event Schedule 6 Upcoming Events Details found in newsletter Boat Wash May 5 Meeting May 10 Ladies Day Sail May 12 Lake Pueblo Sail June 1 3 New Member Sail June 9 The crew separated at the airport half going to the grocery store to provision and the other half getting checked out for the boat. We all met up at the boat and were moved to a mooring ball out in the harbor. We took the dinghy in for dinner which was the only time we used the dinghy through the whole trip. Our boat, The Real Escape was a 44.9 Jeanneau, with a 5 3 draft, 4 cabins, two heads, roller furling jib and main and a very nice interior. Another perk was air conditioning which we used and a microwave which we didn t. The following day we motored to Pumpkin Key due to winds coming blowing in our face and we were concerned about shallow waters. We followed the markers carefully down Biscayne Bay. The channel was 5 to 11 feet but outside it was as shallow as 1 to 4 feet. We tucked in behind Pumpkin Key in Card Sound and anchored for the night. ( continued on Page 4 )
2 Page 2 Vice Commodore s Log Marilyn Allen First, a big THANK YOU to Bobby Olsen and Pat Finley-Olson for the great presentation last meeting about your trip to Burma, Thailand and beyond. That s one of the best turn-outs we ve had all year and it was a REALLY interesting trip. We ll be meeting on May 10 at the Garrison St. Grill, 608 Garrison St., Lakewood. Socializing starts at 5:30 with the meeting starting about 6:45 and presentation at 7. If you re a newcomer who s looking for a sailing home, come meet us and get acquainted. You re SUPER welcome if you have a sailboat, but if you re just willing to be crew, we d love to have you as well. Our members are happy to coach, but if you re REALLY new to sailing, you ll be encouraged to learn a bit on your own, whether it s in a class on or line. Knowing the parts of a sailboat and some basic terms, how to get on and off and a few knots will get you started! This month we ll have a special mystery presentation (a mystery because it s still in the development stage) but hopefully, it will provide some laughs as well as some helpful information for the upcoming sailing season. REMEMBER, trips and day sails are usually announced first at the meetings and signups passed around so don t lose out because your trip got filled quickly. In June, we move to Chatfield and Seagull s restaurant. Our meetings become very abbreviated, because the goal is to get in some great evening sailing. More later. See you on May 10 th. Marilyn Allen, Vice Commodore New Member Sail and Barbeque June 9, 2018 This event has been popular in the past and is a good way to show our new members, as well as current members what a great group we are. It s also the beginning of the sailing season and hopefully we ll have a great day on the water. Sailing is usually good because there aren t that many power boats on the water. And if that doesn t convince you there is always the tried and true reason to attend an event FOOD. We will be meeting on the Chatfield Lake dock at 11:30 where we will enjoy brats and burgers. Please bring a dish to share. The club will supply all the fixings, plates and water. We ll eat and swap stories and get on the water at 12:30. The cost is $15 for members, $22 for non-members and new members will get their check returned. As usual, everyone needs to send a check (non-members included) made out to the Salty Dog Sailing Club. Your check is your reservation. Please mail your check to: Lori Conway 8344 S. Upham Way Littleton, CO Don t forget to bring a personal floatation device (PFD), sunscreen, hat and sunglasses. If you don t have a PFD no worries most boats have extras. Hope to see you for food and great fun on the water.

4 Page 4 Ladies Sail - Miami to Key West continued from page 1 Day 3 - Motored the short distance to Angel Fish Creek which had to be taken on a near high tide. Finally we got some sailing in. That night we dock at Key Largo Marina. We enjoyed the swimming pool and a nice shower. We walked around and went out for ice cream and took pictures of the original African Queen. The next morning we saw a Manatee family of three getting a drink of fresh water from a boat exhaust and swimming amongst the boats. Day 4 - Fueled up the boat and went out the skinny channel to spend a day snorkeling Molasses Reef. We saw a nurse shark, barracuda (with a fish hook in it) and trash. We dropped our mooring ball and sailed outside of Hawks Channel for a couple of hours and then back over the reef and anchored at Rodriguez Key for the night. Day 5 - Before leaving Rodriguez Lori and Melissa tried the helm in reverse. They were both surprised at how hard it is to steer in reverse. We got back out into Hawks Channel and sailed to Hens and Chickens to do some more snorkeling. They saw a moray eel and a sea turtle during their snorkeling adventures. We sailed on to Long Key bight and anchored for the night. Day 6 Weighed anchor and sailed to Marathon (Boot Key). I had reserved a slip but as I was working our way up the channel I missed the turn and had to go up the channel and turn around. We were able to see more hurricane damage. They had replaced a couple docks and we got a floating dock. What a treat. So off to the swimming pool and happy hour. Day 7 - Sailed, motored, and motor sailed to Key West which was 52 miles. We made it to the marina barely by closing time at 5pm. We were quite proud of everyone getting the lines on the pilings (posts) getting all 7 lines attached the first time in tight quarters. Unfortunately we went in bow first and the power cord wouldn t reach the box on the dock. So we had to undo everything, turn the boat around, and do everything a second time. We wandered around Key West and then went to Mallory Square for the Sunset. Did some shopping and had dinner at The Turtle Krulls. Day 8 - Had breakfast at Harpoon Harry s. As we were leaving Key West we tried to avoid a large cruise boat coming out except we finally figured out it was still docked and just an optical illusion. Now heading back to Boco Chica Channel getting into Stock Island was interesting. Lots of markers starting with a red 2. We followed one which was wrong. So we went back out and followed another marker and fueled up. We were once again wrong. We contacted our Stock Island representative and he came over and moved us one channel over (oops). One more very nice swimming pool and showers to end our trip. Day 9 - Picked up our rental car at the Key West airport had a nice breakfast on the boat and headed back to Miami. We saw the Keys by land and sea. All had a good time.
