Apr 18 Volume 34, Issue 4 April 2015 Commodore s Log Ahoy Mates! by Carol Kolesnikoff Landlubbers We had a fine turnout! Several awards were postponed to be given at the monthly meeting on Thursday, April 9 th. Hope to see you there! Just in case you missed it, Lori Conway graciously received the coveted Broken Mast Award. We are grateful to our Rear Vice Commodore, Janet Heinen, who did a super job setting up our meetings last year and organizing the Landlubbers banquet this year. Thank you, Janet! Sailing Coordinators and Skippers Meeting Spring has sprung, the ice has melted, the wind is up, and the sailing season in the Rockies is almost here. Our On-The-Water Coordinator, Gary Kieft is planning the annual Sail Coordinator & Boat Skipper meeting for Saturday, April 18 th. Plan to attend if you might be interested being a skipper or sailing event coordinator this season. Skippers - Boat Owners Some of you have sent me your insurance Declarations page. Thanks! If you have not, you can either bring it to the meeting on Thursday, April 9 th or send it to me by or snail mail (eatingethically@gmail.com or 1827 Quail Street, Apt 1, Lakewood, CO 82015). Sailing Event Highlights The Annual Boat Wash is May 2 nd and Becky is in charge! Take advantage of this opportunity to clean up your hull and keel. Ladies Day is our first sail of the season. Don t miss it! Glendo Lake, Wyoming Diana Bliss and Carol Kolesnikoff are planning the 2015 Memorial Day Weekend at Glendo this year. Our new member, Duane Sylvester, lives, farms and hunts in Wyoming. If we are lucky, he will supply elk steaks! Cross your fingers! We can always count on good winds, a campground every nature lover will relish, a big lake, and fine sailing at Glendo. Space is very limited so bring your checkbook and plan to sign-up at the April meeting. Boat Wash & Sail May 2 Ladies Day Sail May 17

Volume 34, Issue 4 Page 2 Commodore s Log Cont d Lake Granby A good time is always had by all at our annual 4 th of July sail. Once again, Becky Mock and Tom Prebynski are organizing this sail. You can marvel at the beautiful mountains surround this magnificent lake, but space is limited, so you may want to reserve your spot by signing-up at the April meeting. Catalina Island Neil Wiler has sailed from Newport California to Catalina Island and wants to do it again with club members in September. More to come on this. Lake Pueblo in warm and sunny southern Colorado The Salty Dogs received an open invitation from the Pueblo Sailing Club to join in their Saturday Regattas from April 11 through October 24. Any time two or more sailboats are on the water, the race is on! If you are interested in racing on Lake Pueblo, be sure to let Gary Kieft know, so he can coordinate at least a week ahead of time. It would be fun to carpool to Pueblo Lake a few times this summer! I m looking forward to seeing you on April 9 th to welcome in our 2015 sailing season! Carol Kolesnikoff, Commodore Vice Commodore s Log by John Venema Vice Commodore s Corner Ahoy sailors, You can t say I didn t advise you when I introduced myself as Salty Dog s Vice Commodore for 2015.I said I would have an emphasis on education. As the Squadron Education Officer for the Boulder Valley Sail and Power Squadron, I arrange courses, seminars and articles related to boating. A web blast was sent out earlier this month regarding a sailing class being offered by the Boulder Valley Sail and Power Squadron. Dates are set for courses on Seamanship, Advanced Piloting and Weather. Soon, I will have made arrangements for the Sailing course in May and also for a course in Electronic Navigation in October. [See page 8 of this newsletter for more information.]

Volume 34, Issue 4 Page 3 Vice Commodore s Log Cont d Join in the fun and get yourself well qualified to captain boats and enjoy safe and fun sailing! For descriptions of these courses visit USPS.org and go to the education department. If you have additional questions or want to take a course, give me a call or me. A reminder that I will introduce instructors from the United States Coast Guard Reserve at our monthly meeting on April 9. You will learn about other opportunities that are available to you from this great organization. Spring is here! It is nearing the time we get on the water! John Venema, V.C. Annual Landlubbers Celebration The annual Landlubbers Celebration was held on March 14 at Windsor Gardens Blossoms Restaurant. Fun was had by all! Thanks to Janet Heinen and Dick Hug for all the hard work in putting it together.

Volume 34, Issue 4 Page 4 Save the Date Fifth Annual Boat Wash Saturday, May 2, 2015 Reservoir Here is an opportunity for club members to assist boat for the season. Pot luck lunch (Bring your own entrée and a side dish or dessert to share. You will also need your own table service and drink and a chair.) Finishing cleaning/launching boats. Sail, sail, sail (at captains discretion) I will not be camping this year, but feel free to do so if you choose. Cost of campsites is $ Campsites can have one hard side camper and a tent; no more than 2 vehicles per site. Make your own reservations. If you own a boat and would like to have it cleaned and polished, please let me know. Contact Becky Mock if you are interested.

Volume 34, Issue 4 Page 5 Memorial Day Sail at Glendo Lake in Wyoming - Friday, May 22 Monday, May 25 Glendo State Park is about a 3-hour drive going north on I-25. We will camp in the lush Two Moons campground. There is a hiking trail along the cliff overlooking the lake to the marina. The water level is good. Sailboats will have slips. Cliff Randall is making the slip reservations. Space is limited, so plan to bring your check to reserve your spot to the April meeting. Cost is being calculated, and will be announced at the meeting. Upon entrance to the park, each car pays a daily state park fee of $6 per day. We will arrange carpooling. Only two vehicles per campground are permitted. Extra cars can park in the marina lot. We will have a group dinner on either Friday or Saturday night with the main course supplied (maybe elk). Plan to bring a side dish or dessert. Plan to eat out at Mike s Restaurant in town on Sunday night. Bring food for other meals including breakfasts, lunches, and snacks. Coordinators: Diana Bliss Carol Kolesnikoff
