1 News from around the club: Wind and Waves We had the best 4th of July weekend ever that I can remember! Good wind, weather, food and friends. Photos inside The hoists have been repaired and reinstalled and are now available for use. Also the new jack stands have been modified to fit our old chain and are ready to go also. Photos inside membership cards are on the counter for pickup. Thanks to Dan Schenking for making them! The old furniture in the TV area has been replaced by furniture donated by Peter and Anita vanden Berg. Thanks!!! The old SMBC furniture is being donated to a local church youth group. The BOG approved the purchase of a new 28 extension ladder after we used the old wooden ladder to replace the hoists. Can anyone say SCARY!! EXTRA!! The lake level has started to drop a little but it is still the highest it has been this late in the season for several years. The current lake level is 5 above the spillway. Looking back, In 2003 on the 4th of July weekend it rained over 6 and water ran across the street at the ramp and the lake was over the top of the docks! 2 REMINDERS!! Get your dock stickers from Kathy Miller and put them on your boat and dock. You must have your name on your trailer s tongue if you leave it on SMBC property! The August SMBC General Membership Meeting is on August 3rd at 4:00 pm. Race Committee has moved Saturday Race start times up to 10:00 am with captains meeting at 9:00 am hoping for better wind. Note: This is only for the NON REGATTA Saturday races. As always check the black board and attend the captains meeting 1 hr prior to race start for the latest information. There is free microwave popcorn on top of the microwave which was donated by Steven and Joyce Nudge.

3 Effects of Ethanol in Gasoline on Marine Engines by Ted Goodwin owner of Kozy Marine Ted was our guest speaker at the July Membership meeting. Notes taken by J. Myers Ethanol is hydroscopic which means it absorbs water. Autos have sealed gas tanks to keep air out. Marine, farm, and lawn equipment have open fuel systems where the tank is vented to the atmosphere which allows the fuel to draw moisture out of the air. The moisture collects in the bottom of the fuel tank causing corrosion if tank is made of steel. It is recommended that if ethanol fuel is used in a marine engine, the tank must be used up and replaced every 15 days. Ethanol is a solvent so it dissolves any old sludge in the fuel tank and sends it through the fuel system. It also dissolves plastic and rubber. Marine engines have carburetor parts and fuel lines made of plastic and rubber! There have been cases where larger boats had fiberglass fuel tanks which failed due to ethanol fuel dissolving the tank. There are additives that can be purchased to help slow down the process of water absorption but they do not stop it entirely. ED - Sta Bil, CRC or Sea Foam are examples. Ethanol can also cause pre-ignition which ruins the engine. Autos have sophisticated computer controls to adjust engine timing but marine engines do not. Ethanol has been linked to various problems in cars and trucks also. The situation is worst in the south where there is higher humidity in the air and warmer temperatures. Just a reminder that lawn mowers, chainsaws, leaf blowers, and farm equipment have vented fuel systems that are similar to marine engines and thus are subject to damage. Kozy Marine, Windy Point and Bay View sell ethanol free gas, the other marinas do not. It comes in 4-cycle, and premixed 50:1 and 40:1. Unfortunately it is sold by the case in quart size bottles and is expensive. Also Stihl and others market pure gasoline in small containers. Look for them in the lawn equipment isle. All fuel in Alaska is ethanol free. Also many parts of Canada have ethanol free fuel.

4 4th of July Weekend Recap Some times it can be cold when watching the fireworks on the 4th and sometimes the weekend can be very hot. This past 4th weekend was purrrfect, best I can remember! Regatta Sailing Photos: The photos above was taken at the Sunday Rock Pile race of Cindi Myers on the rail with feet hanging over the side and Jay Schafer at the helm of Peter vanden Berg s boat. The look on Jay s face says it all. The boat is healing at about 45 degrees. Another boat healed similarly in the photo below left. Jim and Mary Couser s Hobie 21 joined in the fun and is pictured below right.

5 More Regatta Photos It is best to take photos from either the front or back of the fleet. On Saturday I was at the back.

6 Saturday Evening Shrimp Boil and Fireworks in Photos: The weather was so nice that most folks elected to eat on the patio or lawn. The food was great! The Fireworks in Celina were great. Some folks sailed down and some drove to see them. Note: The large white glow in photo is the moon. The row of lights at the bottom of the photo are boats on the lake. I have never seen so many boats on the lake at one time day or night.

7 Hoist Repair The two hoists to the north were removed, taken to a repair shop for repairs, on their return they were cleaned, greased and oiled. Bob Wilkins provided the grease and oil and some replacement stainless steel screws for the gear case covers. We were unable to lift the hoist off of the hook. Jim Hepp came along with another method to remove the hoists which worked. When we lowered the hoists into the trunk of my big Bonneville car, the rear springs were nearly collapsed. I had to drive very slowly to Bryant Indiana. 9 Wind and lack there of Have you noticed that the wind always seems to blow the best when we cannot go sailing? The past fall, winter and spring were not only cold but it seemed to me to be unusually windy. For days on end it would blow and during several storms we had winds over 40 mph. I told Cindi at one point that I was worried that the wind might be used up and there would be nothing left for summer. Now it seems to blow during the week and be calm on weekends. The best wind on memorial weekend was on Monday; especially late Monday after most folks went home. June 1 st the best wind was after supper on Sunday evening. Sadly only a few folks were around to enjoy it. June 14 th there was almost no wind for the Saturday races. Sunday June 15, finally some good wind and great sailing! I went sailing with George Schumacher in the am. In the late afternoon I invited myself sailing with Mike and Ann Cecil. We all said we could not stay out long but we ended up sailing past safety island before reluctantly turning for home because the conditions were so perfect. July 19-20th Beautiful weekend, cool temperatures, just right for sitting on the patio and watching the lake or sitting around a fire as was done on Saturday night, but no wind until the following Monday morning when everyone was gone! Sailing is not for the type A personalities which need to have every minute of every day planned. You have to be prepared to go sailing at the drop of a hat, regardless of what is going on around you. I used to have a job where I could take a half day off on a moments notice. At about 11:30 am every summer work day, I would walk outside and check the weather. Once in a blue moon, there would be that perfect sailing day with high scattered puffy clouds, winds about 10 mph and mostly sunny skies. I would then immediately start calling the 20 friends who all said they wanted to go sailing with me. Almost always I got to the end of the list with no takers. My friends were too busy, could not get away, and said if only I had called a couple of days earlier so they could plan. Then I would make the hard decision of going sailing by myself or just stay at work and forget it. Usually I just stayed at work and sulked. As I said, being a sailor can be frustrating. That is also why when that special time does come and all of the conditions are just right and you are out there sailing it is soo. spiritual, sensual, and sensational. Fair winds, John Myers
