COMMODORE C RECREATION G R E E T I N G S F R O M T H E C O M M O D O R E The grounds of the Squadron are a hub of activity as the Club has kicked into high gear for the season. We have already enjoyed some great Wednesday Night racing with over 30 boats on the start line in the month of May! We also had a fantastic Opening Weekend with great sailing and other activities around the Club for everyone to enjoy. Soon the pools will open, the playground and sailing school will be full of young sailors, and the adults will be enjoying cocktails and fine food at one of the finest outdoor entertaining venues in Atlantic Canada. Don t forget to add the New Members Night and Pier Party on in your social calendar as it is always a wonderful opportunity to mix and mingle with your fellow Members. The 2016 Canadian Sailing Team has been recently announced and NS is very well represented by our Squadron members. The RNSYS is certainly standing tall on the national stage! Even more exciting is that next month, we will be hosting a celebration of the amazing group of sailors that have represented our club and our country in their journey to Rio Olympic Games. These amazing athletes have so much to be proud of, and we need to show our appreciation for their dedication and passion for our sport. Please hold the date of July 7th to come out and help support our sailors and their quest to Rio. PLAY AT OUR PLAYGROUND. NOW OPEN FOR THE SEASON CONTINUED ON PAGE 3 2

COMMODORE CLOTHING The 2016 Squadron Summer Cruise to the Bras d Or Lakes is open to all of our boating members. Sailors and power boat owners alike are encouraged to bring family and friends for some cruising fun. We also have members who join us by road at many of the destinations. The list of members joining in on the fun continues to grow. It s going to be a fantastic cruise so don t miss out! Looking for some offshore racing adventure this summer? Look no further than the 8th biennial running of the Route Halifax to St. Pierre Ocean Race set to begin on July 10th. The anticipation is building and the 2016 edition of the race is developing into one of the most exciting to date. There s still time to gather your crew, prepare your boat and register for what will be a challenging but highly rewarding race to the beautiful French island of Saint- Pierre. our collection CLOTHING & ACCESSSORIES AVAILABLE IN-STORE OR ONLINE IN THE MEMBERS ONLY SECTION OF THE SQUADRON S WEBSITE ENJOY FREE SHIPPING WHEN YOU ORDER ONLINE! Bridging the gap from an active junior sailing program to the Club s keelboat program is a very important role that our senior members can help facilitate. During the 2016 Ocean Regatta, we had a very talented young race team member join the crew of One More Time. It was an opportunity to highlight the camaraderie and team work associated with sailing with a large crew, and help broaden a whole new aspect of our sport outside of dinghy sailing. The only sad discovery we made over the weekend was that one of the spinnakers that we actually used was built when our junior sailor was only three years old! Time for some new sails I guess... Over the summer, we will be highlighting opportunities to engage more with our junior sailors, so stay tuned. CONTINUED ON PAGE 6 3

RACING OPENER IN REVIEW Our 2016 RNSYS Ocean Regatta was a challenging event for racers and our Race Committee. Indecisive winds, cool conditions, and some unfortunate clouds made for a stimulating weekend of good old-fashioned Halifax Harbour racing! THE END OF MAY KICKED OFF THE START OF ANOTHER GREAT SEASON OF RACING AT THE ROYAL John Roy of Ocean Yacht Sales lead the fleets out to Lighthouse Bank in thick fog to set up for racing on Saturday. The fog soon lifted but the variable winds were an issue all day leading to some delays and course changes. The Big Boat Rumble got underway first with a good length of course in the harbour entrance, a race well suited to the bigger boats. They were followed by the two handicap fleets and the J/24s on shorter races in the light airs. Multiple mark boats were kept in motion adjusting to the changes before, during and after the race. With the wind oscillating and the sky showing signs of a drastic change a second race was got underway, a contest that started in a light southerly and ended in a brisk northerly. With the end of the day approaching the fleets were sent home to enjoy the band, beverages and food ashore while the RC waited for the Big Boat Rumble to finish. Sunday dawned bright with the promise of a sea breeze and so the fleets again headed out to Lighthouse Bank. A steady but light wind allowed the first race to start promptly and as 4

Close competition kept the overall standings in doubt right up to the end with many boats putting in a strong showing. The light, variable winds put a premium on tactical calls and careful trimming and the lead in each race changed hands several times. In addition to the traditional silverware and Squadron keeper prizes, the top three in each class took away swag and gift cards from event sponsors Propeller Brewing and Garrison Brewing. COMMODORE I encourage all Squadron Members to get out and partake in all that their Club has to offer. 8 CRUISING CRUISING the BRAS D OR LAKES This July, the Squadron is setting out to explore the unscathed beauty of the Bras d Or Lakes. With more than 18 vessels signed up to take part, this is bound to be one of our most popular cruises to date! Vessels of all size and speed are coming along and we hope you will too! Considering cruising with us? Keep reading for more information on how to prepare for cruising to Cape Breton! 7

CRUISING your next adventure starts here. Preparing for a cruise is big job, but with our step-by-step guide you and your crew will be ready to set sail or start your engines without missing a beat! FILL UP ON FUEL Before you leave the dock, make sure your tank is full of diesel or gas. Many cruisers have found their travels interrupted due to lack of fuel. In fact, it is the most common reason for a call for assistance by boaters. Make sure this doesn t happen to you by bringing an extra can. CHECK YOUR OIL While you re checking your fuel tank, you should also check your oil and bring a spare bottle along with you in case the marina you re visiting doesn t carry your preferred brand. LIGHTS - CRUISING- ACTION Check your boats navigation lights so that when the heavy fog rolls in, or you re cruising after daylight, you ll have them! Check all of your lights, especially your anchor light! 8

CRUISING RECREATION ELECTRICAL DEVICES ARE SOUND AND READY Knowing your direction and your depth are staples of cruising. Don t pass up the temptation of getting a closer view of the majestic shoreline, make sure your electrical devices are working properly before you head out. CHARTS AND GUIDES BY YOUR SIDE Do you have the required charts for your destination and any harbours along the way? It is a good idea to have at least one cruising book that will tell you where the best anchorages are and how to enter them. There are several available for the Eastern Shore and Cruising the Bras d Or lakes. LET THE WEATHER DRESS YOU When packing your bags, be sure to include heavy weather gear! Without a doubt, a some point on the trip, it will be cold and it will be wet. IF YOU WANT TO BE POPULAR ON THE CRUISE If you want to be popular bring some food items so you can make simple hors d oeuvres. You will have visitors and you will be a visitor so it is nice to bring a little something with you. As an example, one very simple hors d oeuvre that is popular and easy to prepare is SPAM cut in small squares, fried, and stuck with a tooth pick. You might laugh, but from my personal experience it is the first plate that is gone! Last year we enjoyed elk sliders, and some of us are looking forward to seeing them again! Hon. 11 RHSP some winning advice RHSP 2016 ROUTE HALIFAX SAINT PIERRE RACERS OFFER UP ADVICE ON HOW TO CHAMPION THE 365 NAUTICAL MILE ADVENTURE The key to winning Route Halifax Saint-Pierre 2016 is finding the right crew, according to Mike Evans, a multiple trophy winner from previous races. Evans and Andrew Sergeant doublehanded on Evans Bavaria 38 Sea Smoke in They won a division prize (PHR-2), as well as the Armed Services, Halifax Yachts, and Friar trophies. Rodolphe Victorri has renamed his Nacira 6.5. It is now called St. Pierre and Miquelon. I started with the people I wanted to race with and creating realistic expectations for what we wanted to accomplish, Evans said. Then I went to work on the boat because no one wants to race on a slow, unsafe, uncompetitive boat! I made sure that all the gear was in perfect working condition prior to the start of the race and that we had available spares where required. This year s 365 nm. race starts in Halifax harbour on July 10th. Competitors can expect to arrive at the finish line in Saint- Pierre, probably two days later depending on the weather. Several larger boats entered this year could challenge the current course record established by Derek Hatfield s Spirit of Canada in :43:56. Race co-founder Philippe Paturel also credits his Ciao Baby! s top performance to the crew. It is essential, in my view, to assemble a team that gets along well and to ensure that each crew member can play his or her part and anticipates very quickly how to exploit the maximum performance of the boat. 10

RHSP But Paturel admits that isn t easy. It is especially difficult when the crew isn t used to racing together regularly, which was our case. My crew consisted of three older sailors, two with more high-level racing experience and three young chaps from St. Pierre, two of them having their first ocean race. We worked a lot on cohesion and team spirit. By mixing experience with the ardor of youth, we quickly found the recipe to ensure a correct result. Perhaps we could have done better but we were thrilled! Ciao Baby!, an A 31 won the IRC race division in 2014, as well as the Founders Trophy. Paturel says the boat itself is well-designed, especially for this type of off-shore racing. Another French boat Shanawdithit moved ahead of Ciao Baby! in corrected time to win the trophy for SPM 1er Yachts. Skipper Rodolphe Victorri also was recognized with the Hal Davies Trophy for first-time captains. Victorri says he also relied on his co-skipper, Christophe Gireau for excellent sailing in And he says he finds it easier to go faster, thinking about what waits for you in Saint-Pierre: It s a huge motivation to sail faster as the welcome in Saint-Pierre is the best of all the races I have ever done! That is something that Mike Evans likes about the race too. He is looking forward to seeing his host family in St. Pierre once again. This year, Victorri s Nacira 6.5 metre boat is renamed Saint Pierre et Miquelon. His co-skipper will be his daughter Dina. On board Ciao Baby! during the winning Route Halifax St. Pierre passage in July Evans doesn t plan any crew changes on Sea Smoke. But he is looking back to see how he can repeat his success. In the 2012 edition of this race, I made 2 tactical errors. I initially jibed too far out to sea. Then I came too close into shore after that. The extra distance I traveled by doing those things cost me the race. In the 2014 race I stayed closer to the rhumb line throughout and it paid off. The lesson here is if you are deviating from the rhumb line, make sure you have a good reason! Victorri also has a bit of practical advice on the approach to Saint- Pierre, based on his own experience. If the wind comes from the southwest, do not sail too close to Langlade where we were stuck without wind for one hour! 11

RHSP Mike Evans Seasmoke has a distinctive Batman spinnaker. Paturel is reticent to give any advice to new participants, except to say that pleasure and competition are two important elements in this race. Every race is different, so it is a little difficult to compare each edition of the Route since its inception in In the beginning, my team was sometimes described as the Raymond Poulidor of sailing (a well-known French cyclist who finished second in the Tour de France three times). Except for the 2012 edition of the Route on which I was not involved, we have always been very consistent with good results. I do not think I have to change our approach on Route Halifax Saint-Pierre and it would be difficult to precisely determine what could be changed. Comparison is hard especially because during my seven appearances we competed with different type of boats. We went from a Jeanneau OD 35 (2002) to Beneteau 36.7 (2004 and 2006), Archambault A35 (2008), A40 rc (2010) and finally A31 for the last one and also for this year. Paturel does have a cherished memory from a previous race: Actually, my only wish would be to repeat 2008 and share this exceptional experience again with my daughter Marie who was 12 years old back then. We had a great race on the 35-footer Ciao! and we shared a beautiful experience with the rest of the crew. experience ocean racing I know this year, Rodolphe with his Mini 6.50 will have the privilege of racing with his own daughter and I feel a little jealous! Sixteen crews are already registered to compete in RHSP They are from France, Canada and the United States, and are roughly divided between newcomers and those which have done the race before. Social events take place at the two sponsoring clubs: the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Squadron and the Yacht Club de Saint-Pierre. RHSP 2016 is chaired by former RNSYS commodore George Chisholm. 14 RACING CANADA DAY RACE FRIDAY. JULY 1. Celebrate Canada Day with your Club! The perfect way to kick-off the long weekend for you and your crew. Canada Day approaches and so does the traditional summer celebration at the Squadron. In addition to the fun ashore we will have our Canada Day race, a great excuse to get out on the water. Registration is online or in-person starting at 11am on July 1st. Following a quick skippers meeting at noon to outline harbour traffic, the course and start area, the race will start at 1pm. The aim of the day is fun so expect a good length of course that explores the harbour but still gets everyone home in time to tuck in to the pig roast that starts at 4pm. And for those that still have a little energy, don t forget that the best way to view the fireworks downtown is from the water! 13

SOCIAL RECREATION MEMBER SERVICES SHARES WHAT S HAPPENING AT THE CLUB IN THE COMING WEEKS! Happy June, In a previous e-blast update, I made reference to Dick s Deck, which is our beautiful new deck, built in time for our hosting of the IFDS Worlds. The fundraising for this project was spearheaded by past Commodore Dick Rafuse, hence... Dick s Deck. To all members who have fundraised and contributed to those projects that make our Club so inviting in the summer, like the deck, the pool, the MAC (Marine Activity Centre), and the new ramp to Pier Phase 4 - we can never say thank you enough!! As a last toast to the deck patio season has finally arrived, in time for Opening Weekend! As you enjoy cocktails and lunch under the sun, please just keep in mind that during slower staffing times, certain outdoor sections may be curtailed from food service, in order to serve all members more efficiently. Please mark your calendars for the following upcoming events: First off, New Members Night and Pier Party on Friday, June 10th. Page 16.
