The three Duos at Hawley racing in the order they finished February 2013 In this Issue Editorial Dinghy Show Future Events Results Membership Renewal Committee Members
Welcome to the first issue of E-Tales, the electronic version of Luminous Tales. As I did not have enough material to make a paper version cost effective, but there were items you would all like to hear about, I thought this might be the most effective way of communicating, and it is virtually cost free. For the people who do not have addresses we will send out paper copies but not the polished job that our printers usually give us. I hope you will all be happy with this approach. Whatever your view, I would like some feedback so please send me any comments, for or against, to my address above. A message from the Chairman: You may also notice that the layout and style is a bit different. MS Publisher is not available for the Mac so I cannot reproduce everything perfectly the same. This issue contains a list of what events are planned for this year, reports of the Versa Championships at Bewl Water and the Duo Open at Hawley, and a reminder that some of our boat classes entered the 2013 Bloody Mary in January. I have entered a couple of times and it is b***** cold, so hats off to them. I hope the weather will soon get a bit warmer and we get good pleasant sailing this year. John Sturgeon We are again presenting the classes to the world at the dinghy show. We are on the stand next to the single handed comets as usual. We are having a Versa and a Trio on show. WHat we want is to encourage new blood to join the association and take part in the events. Althought new boats are not being built so much at the moment we want to encourage people who have them to come to events, and to encourage people who dont have them to get them and join the association. If you can give up some of a day either on the Saturday or Sunday to help the association, that would be really appreciated. We do have spare entry tickets for those who can help us. I hope to see you there. Thanks David Don't forget that Andy Simmons at Comet Dinghies has spares for all the Comet range of boats and he knows exactly what should be fitted to each boat to keep it in class. find him at: 2
May 4th & 5th, Trio, but others welcome Llangorse This year the annual Comet racing at Llangorse will be a separate start during the Club's own weekend of sailing. Camping is available nearby and there is accomodation in the village. For those who have not been, this is a lovely lake set at the edge of the South Welsh hills and well worth a visit. June 16th & 17th, 2013 Exe The annual Exe Regatta takes place in June. This is an excellent opportunity for non-exe Sailing Club memebers to get used to the water in advance of the National Championships a few weeks later. Details from Guy Farrant at gafarrant@hotmail.co.uk Aug 2nd, 3rd & 4th, 2013 Exe Sailing Club The Trio National Championships will be held at Exe this year. A three day event beginning on the first friday in August. Details from Guy Farrant at gafarrant@hotmail.co.uk May 26th & 27th, Versa Championships Cotswold Sailing Club Once again the Versas are joining the single-handed Comets in a combined event, this year at Cotswold. This is a very pleasant and friendly club with excellent facilities and camping by their lake. The lake is also interesting with a few islands but open with plently of space. Do come along. Details from Denise Weatherley, theweatherleys@btinternet.com Sept 8th, Versa Open Crawley Mariners Crawley Mariners are inviting all Versa sailors to an open in September. The clubhouse is rather nice, set amongst woods, and the lake is smallish to medium with no islands but interesting to sail on. They have quite a large Versa fleet but welcome others to come along. Thier web-site gives details of how to find the lake which is not far from the M23. Aug 10th, Duo Open Cransley This year the Duo Championships will be at Cransley, a lovely little lake near Kettering. The Club is very friendly and the sailing is very good there. Any Duo owners who would like to sail away from their own lake should try to get along. Details from Stephen Linton at: stephenlinton@doctors.org.uk 3
August 10th - 16th, 2013 Ullswater Yacht Club Don't know what to do in August? Why not come along to the Ullswater Week at Ullswater in the Lakes? Some members are already arranging to go along so there will be familiar faces. The Week begins with a regatta on 10 & 11 Aug followed by five days of racing of various sorts on one of the largest pieces of inland water in the country. The club is very friendly, food is provided very cheaply in the evenings, it was 5 a head two years ago, and there is after dinner entertainment too each night. They claim camping at the club is the cheapest in the area but if they are full there is a very large campsite within close walking distance. Well worth a visit. If you want a day off sailing there are the usual Lakes attractions nearby. More details can be got from Bob Presley who has been there a few times his address is: bobannp@fsmail.net I thought you would like to hear of the results of events since the last Luminous Tales. I have not had any reports except my own short one from Hawley. Still here are the results: Two CCCA class boats entered along with a Comet Race from Cotswold. They finished in the following order: Boat Helm Crew Position Comet Race Brian Weatherley Denise Weatherley 207 Versa Sam Hocking Alistair Parkel 262 Duo Jessica Austin Jason Clarke 263 Six boats competed but only four sailed enough races to qualify, one of these was a Duo which was included in the final placings. The other Duo and Versa were local boats that joined in on the second day. Sail Number Helm Crew Position 232 David Radford Hugh Kemp Ray Suomi Janice Beaumont 2 (Duo) 93 Nigel Ford Anne Ford David Dalton Mark Dalton 4 (Duo) 75 Toby Odone James Evans Tom Evans 6 4
Hawley Comet Opens usually seem to co-incide with the Farnborough Airshow or all the Guides in North Hants having a day of fun on the lake. This year the Army turned up in one corner for a triathlon and the opposite end for a raft building exercise. Luckily the wind kept away from them so we were able to set good courses in the wind in the middle. The Duos shared the day with the single-handed Comet open. Nigel Austin came down from Cransley and Nigel Ford from Olton Mere. David Willey and his wife came along for Hawley and David Talbot borrowed Stephen Linton's boat. In the first race Nigel Austin quickly got into the lead after David Talbot got over the line first but hit Nigel Ford's boat. The two Nigels led the home boats all the way. The Davids vied for third and fourth place for much of the race. The outcome of their battle was decided when David Talbot had to go in to play hockey. The result of the first race was in the order of the final placings. After lunch the wind had changed and the start line was moved. For race 2 Nigel Ford got away in front but by the second mark he had been overtaken by Nigel Austin and David Willey now sailing single-handed. This was the order for the first three laps but in the last lap Nigel Ford got past David to give the same final order as the first race. Race 3 began with Nigel Austin in 103 getting away in the lead but the other two swapped places throughout the first lap. By the end of the lap Nigel Ford had got ahead of David to give another race with the same order. Sail Number Helm Crew Position 103 Nigel Austin 1 93 Nigel Ford David Willey Liz Willey (1st race) David Talbot Jacqui Sturgeon (1st race) 4 David Radford and Hugh Kemp receive the Versa Championship trophy at Bewl Water Nigel Austin gets his trophy for winning the Duo Open at Hawley Membership renewals are now due. There is no increase in price, it stays at last year's figure of Please use the form that came with this newsletter and send it and your money to Comet Dinghies. 5
