It is a beautiful fall day, perfect for those outside activities but not too soon to think about the holidays. We have arranged for the Christmas party to be at Zia s on the Hill again this year. It will be on Thursday, December 6th this year. Please RSVP on Meetup or send an to Bev Doolin. Come early for drinks in the bar and stay for dinner, we look forward to seeing you there. Our ski trips for next year will be great. Unfortunately, we had to cut the size on the Steamboat trip already to President s Message avoid cancellation expenses. The trip to Winter Park is sold out. Space is still available on the Tahoe trip, so if you have been thinking about skiing with us in 2019 sign up now! Sitzmarker November 2018 This is my final year on the Board of the St Louis Ski Club. It has been five years now and it is time for some new ideas and energy. If you are interested or know of someone that would be an asset to the club, please let me or another board member know. We will be able to provide more information and help with any information you might need. Our club is only a good as the membership and volunteers who plan and execute activities make it, so think about what you enjoy as a member and how you can make the club as good as it can be! Steamboat is well known as an authentic, genuine western town and for their renowned champagne powder skiing. There are 165 runs at Steamboat which include 14% Beginner, 42% Intermediate and 44% Advanced. TRIP INCLUDES: Lodging for seven (7) nights at the 2 BR/2B ski in/walkout Dulany at the Gondola condos. The condos are situated a short walk to the slopes, restaurants and shopping. The Dulany offers a private guest shuttle, fully-equipped gourmet kitchen, patio/deck, washer/dryer and outdoor hot tubs. 5 P a g e 5 Spotlight On Skiers: Faye Doerhoff We all take some roundabout ways to become skiers with the St. Louis Ski Club and Faye Doerhoff is no different. She has certainly come a long way from her roots in the central Missouri town of St. Elizabeth, which had a population of 59 when she was growing up there. (It has since increased to over 300 but still has no traffic lights). Faye attended the University of Missouri-Columbia for college and medical school, then completed residency in Pediatrics at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston. She has worked as a Pediatric Emergency Medicine attending physician at Cardinal Glennon Children s Hospital for over 37 years and continues to love her work. Her interest in skiing came as an indirect result of her first clinical rotation with Project EARTH (Educational Activities in Rural Team Health) which happened to be an expensepaid month with three other students in Breckenridge. Although she had long enjoyed water skiing at the Lake of the Ozarks, snow skiing was a new experience for her. She quickly fell in love with it though, and has been hooked ever since. She took a trip to Whistler with the St. Louis Ski Club and has been an active member since then. On a medical mission in Honduras. Faye in the town of Czesky Krumlov near Prague Faye s medical work and other endeavors have also taken her beyond the ski slopes. She has served on medical missions to Honduras and hopes to continue participating in global health endeavors for the foreseeable future. Her daughter Caroline taught English in Prague for a few years and during Faye s visits there she managed to work in some trips to Paris, Vienna, Athens, and Istanbul and got to enjoy fine restaurants in all these places. Caroline is now back in St. Louis and this year alone they have visited Kauai and Santa Fe. Faye enjoys spending her summers tending to her backyard chemistry experiment (better known as her swimming pool) and might even entertain the notion of having a ski club party there some day. Faye is looking forward to the Winter Park trip with the club in 2019 and is grateful for the family and friends she has in her life.
