1 CONNECTICUT SKI COUNCIL skiclub.com January, 2018 PRESIDENT S MESSAGE COUNCIL MEETING: A HAPPY SKIING NEW YEAR TO YOU ALL!! The Mountains are open and ready to welcome the members of the Connecticut Ski Council clubs and their families. Conditions have been very good so far, and I hope everyone has had the time to enjoy the early winter weather. Please take the time to let your club s members know that there is a TON of information on the Council website, with more being added daily. If your club is not planning a winter trip this year, there is room in many of other club s trips, and they would welcome you to join them. If YOUR club has a trip that needs a few more travelers, please make sure you have it posted on the website. In addition, the official Awareness Day schedule is posted on the website to help you plan how to stretch your winter fun dollars throughout the winter, as well as additional discounts from retailers and restaurants that will honor your CSC stickers. COMMITTEE REPORTS: SKI VOUCHERS Nancy Nolan (Southern tier) and Cheryl Parmelee (Northern tier) - if you have any questions or concerns about vouchers, please contact these folks to assist you. AWARENESS DAYS John Filakovsky As mentioned, the OFFICIAL Awareness Day schedule is posted on the Council website. PLEASE do not download it to your club s website, but rather encourage your members to go to the CSC site for the latest updates. Also, remember that your members need to know the rules and regulations regarding the CSC stickers. Participating mountain resorts do contact me with violations and/or rude behavior. Help us preserve the good will that we have built with these mountains. CSC SNOWBALL The 2017 Snowball is in the books, and we added over $2000 to the CSC treasury, after expenses. Our new CSC Ambassador, Melissa Patterson-Meador, joined Joy Dutra (our outgoing Ambassador), Marsha Baretta and me for a pre-planning meeting on Dec 12 to begin preparations for next year s Snowball. NATIONAL SKI COUNCIL FEDERATION Ben Tomszak is busy putting together the committee to explore ways in which the Council can distribute information from the Federation to assist our member clubs in attracting new members. MONDAY NIGHT RACING Rob Dexter hosted the kick-off pizza party and registration night for Monday Night racers at Mt Southington, Mon., Dec. 18. It was a great night of camaraderie among the various clubs, and well over 100 showed up to pre-register for the Monday Night race series, which kicks off on Jan. 8, KIDS DAY The Council s Kids Learn-to-Ski day will take place on Sun., Jan. 28. Please read the information in this newsletter and on the website. Kids from 5 to 18 get a free lesson and lift ticket for that day. We picked this date as it falls between the NFL championships and the Super Bowl, so that the adults can join in the fun! PLEASE READ THE FLYER FOR INSTRUCTIONS ON REGISTRATION AND PARTICIPATION. OnSNOW WEEKEND Okemo will host the festivities on Mar. 2, 3 and 4, Club race captains need to begin to put their rosters together as soon as possible. We will be sending out the roster forms, registration forms and waivers and related information within the next week. Printed forms will be available at the Jan. 9 Council meeting. I have enjoyed meeting all the Council s officers, the other club Ambassadors, and all the other club representatives. I look forward to working with the Ambassador team, and all the officers and representatives at the CSC OnSnow event in March. I am especially looking forward to working with Bob Lewis of Hamden Ski Club, our Silver Ambassador, and Sandy Hensel of AE Ski Club, our Bronze Ambassador, to lead the 2018 Ambassador team activities. I live in Middletown with my husband, Jim, and our 2 cats. I am a member of the New Haven Ski Club. I race for New Haven on Monday nights, and learned to ski while I was attending Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario, a place where 40 below is a real temperature and not just a wind chill factor! I had my first ski lesson at Loch Lomond Ski area in Thunder Bay. I still remember that it was 10 below, but it was a beautiful sunny day, the instructors were friendly and the lodge was warm. After graduation I moved to Cleveland, where I met and married my husband. One of our first dates was a ski date at the Boston Mills ski area. We joined our first ski club in Ohio, the Continental Ski Club which is a member of the Cleveland Metro Ski Council. Shortly after joining Continental, we began racing for them, and we still do when they race in up-state New York! We ve formed many lasting friendships through skiing and racing, and happily recommend skiing and ski clubs to others.
