2 Hello Nubians. Welcome to the Winter sports season with the Nubian Empire Ski Club. As we begin our season with the Season Opener on October 23, I would like to thank all who work to make this event a suc- cess each year, especially Dolores Lark. This is the fourth year that Dolores has taken the lead on this event. She s worked as hard this year as she did the first year. THE PRESIDENT S CORNER The Season Opener is the first of many exciting activities already planned for this season. A list of our activities is included in this newsletter, as well as on our website at Nubianempireski.com. Check it out often, as we will be updating it as additional activities are scheduled. The Club is trying to develop and offer different activities that will include something of interest for everyone. That is why I am excited about our Youth Development Program. Plans are underway for a full schedule of ski and boarding lessons and outings for our youth, including a season opener for them. We had a successful program for the youth last year. With early planning we are going to have a longer and even better season this year. I hope you will be supportive of our youth when you are called upon to help out as a chaperone or to help with our fund raising. The Nubian Empire Ski Club is fortunate to be located in the great northeast where there is an abundance of opportunities for winter activities. Not only are these activities fun, they can improve health and fitness, and can enrich your life with memorable experiences. This season I challenge you to not only take advantage of these opportunities yourself, I challenge you to commit to making others a part of the Nubian Empire Ski Club experience. See you on the mountain! Gayle Bowden From the Editor Take staycation to a new level. Skiing does not have to be cost prohibitive. When you join a club and take advantage of discounts offered by the mountains as well as special events (Warren Miller s annual ski movie reveal), you can enjoy a great winter sport for reasonable prices. Talk to us about visiting some of our local supporters and ski shops who will give you a great deal on new or used equipment. Consider renting equipment if you are new to the sport. And since we re are in a part of the country with plenty of mountains offering a variety of skiing and boarding terrain, it s your best staycation value! Pamela 2
3 Nubian Empire Ski Club, Inc., Albany, NY Who Said We Don t? History The Nubian Empire Ski Club was the brain child of Phil Littlejohn, a professional Ski Instructor and a lifetime member of Jersey Ski Club. For several years, Phil approached members of the African American community in the Capital District, promoting participation in winter sports and dispelling the myth that Black Folks Don t Ski. In August 2001, we chose our name. We incorporated in October 2001 with 15 members. We applied for membership in the National Brotherhood of Skiers in November 2001 and obtained full membership status in March 2005 under the tireless leadership of Club President, Peggie Allen (Mollnow). During the ski season, we ski many of the mountains in New York and New England States. The club has participated in Ski Summits and Spring Fests in Canada, Colorado, Vermont, and Maine. We also have a Youth Development Committee, whose goal is to introduce our youth to Winter Sports. We have fun during the summer months too, participating in golf, bus trips, NBS Summer Fest in Florida and parties. Mission: The Nubian Empire Ski Club is committed to the promotion of winter sports and other seasonal sports activities within the African American Community in the New York Capital District Area. Objectives: To promote & encourage African American youth in our community to participate in winter sports & other seasonal activities. To enhance the African American community s awareness of skiing & other winter sports and seasonal sporting activities & the benefits thereof. To support the goals & objectives of the National Brotherhood of Skiers, Inc. (NBS). JOIN TODAY! 3

8 Youth Development Program We are gearing up for the Youth Development Skiing and Snowboarding season. The program is open to youth, ages 7-18 yrs. This year we have sponsored slots for 8 youth with a required commitment and payment of at least 4 development sessions ( out of 8 or 9) in the season. That translates into a registration fee of $110 + $10 membership fee if you have your own equipment (skis/snowboard, boots) or $160 + $10 membership fee if we will be renting equipment at the mountain. Equipment: Rent vs. Buy If you plan to have your youth fully participate in the program and be able to take advantage of other NBS ski/snowboard functions that will come up during the season, I strongly suggest that you consider renting their equipment for the season. Also, if you are interested in having your youth join us this season, please me and submit their names to me as soon as possible. Please indicate if they participated in the program last year. We are planning a season kick-off event for the youth within the next few weeks and I want to make sure that interested parents and youth receive an invitation and all follow-up information for registration. If you have any questions, please feel free to call or me. Omoye Cooper Youth Program Chair sistadimples@yahoo.com 8
