University of Idaho Physical Model January 2017
U of I Physical Model Why physical model Provides the best information about what we will get (what you see is what you get): Attraction Wave of sufficient height and power to surf on a surfboard and/or kayak, and to be an attraction to users from all over the region Utility That the wave should be usable by both surfers and kayakers Resilient That the wave would be easier to adjust than the Phase I feature, which has a very narrow and fickle band of adjustability Accessible That the wave would have varying options for accessing the wave (a wall separates the users from the wave in Phase I) Maintenance That the wave would be easier to maintain than the Phase I feature, which requires commercial divers to maintain
U of I Physical Model Methodology 20 meter long flume at UI lab with recirculating pump Wave feature constructed from foam/composite board and an adjustable framing system to match previously completed concept design. Design based on concepts from Munich Wave and Nottingham Wave Gate. Model simulations/runs 34 different configurations Look at head upstream, downstream, water depth, geometry, wave height, etc.
U of I Physical Model
U of I Physical Model Outcome The project met the objective of creating an adjustable wave that is between 4 and 6 high The wave has a wide gamut of adjustability and works with flow rates that are +/- 25% The wave can be configured with either a central pile or piles on both sides with a central green chute. Resulting design changes The modeling resulted in several changes including: Geometry of gate, width of kickers, and downstream RapidBloc Configuration
