PresidentsReport The volunteers at Narrabeen Beach can once again be proud of their commitment and achievements during the season. At this year s Surf Life Saving Sydney Northern Beaches Branch Awards, your Club achieved equal first place in the SLSSNB Patrol Assessment Competition, a wonderful improvement on last season s 7 th place. Overall, the Club also increased its ranking from 7 th place last season to fifth place in the Most Outstanding Club award. Continued vigilance by our members, who patrolled an average 42 hours each and a total of 4,982 hours, helped to maintain a safe beach environment despite some occasional wild conditions in fact, Narrabeen Beach was closed 17 times! We all need to thank Director of Lifesaving and Education Joshua Buckton and his team for their efforts in ensuring continued safety on our beach. Natural attrition in patrolling members was offset by a strong intake of SRC, Bronze Medallion, ARTC and IRB Crew candidates. Your Club worked in collaboration with North Narrabeen and South Narrabeen to design and implement a joint Bronze Medallion training squad, with trainers from all three clubs joining forces to deliver the curriculum in a diversified environment that maximised enjoyment and optimised the experience for candidates from the three clubs. This effort was duly recognised and awarded the SLSSNB Initiative of the Year. Well done to Gordon Coburn and all our trainers for this initiative, and I hope that this model of cooperation can be further developed and adopted by other clubs within the SNB Branch. The Board of Management is also to be thanked for ensuring responsible fiscal practices have been maintained, and despite the risk of a downturn in general economic conditions and the challenge of attracting sponsorship and donations, the Club has a multi-year plan in place to ensure its continued financial viability. Members also contributed their time to provide water safety for local non-sls paddling events and to provide roadside assistance for the annual Pub2Pub Fun Run. Please join me in thanking Director of Surf Sports Robert Buckton and his team. Development and retention of junior members was once again a highlight with almost 100% participation by Nippers for the duration of the season, and the transition of 15 Nippers to the SRC Award being the strongest outcome for many years. A huge thank you goes to Director of Youth and Membership Development Tammy Cook and her entire team of hard-working volunteers. Our Club faced a number of challenges during the season. We had difficulty in filling our patrol roster with the required number of award-holders on each patrol, meaning that a small number of dedicated senior members patrolled significantly more hours than would reasonably be expected. We were unable to fill all positions on the Club s management team and this placed a greater than normal burden on existing officers. Tighter economic conditions placed pressure on our fundraising efforts, although responsible management ensured that the Club is and will continue to be financially sound. I would like to thank Director of Finance & Administration Wayne Schwebel for his diligent work on the administrative aspects of keeping the Club going strong. Again this season your Club organised and hosted a number of events for both the SLS fraternity and the broader public, including the Narrabeen Junior Carnival, the NarraFun Ocean Swim, the Narrathon, and Round 4 of the OceanSeries Ski Race. 7 PresidentsReport On behalf of all members, I wish to thank our Club Patrons - the Hon. Bronwyn Bishop MP, Mr Ken Leonard (Life Member) and Mr Terry Childs. Thanks are also due to Rob Stokes MP for Pittwater, all of the Club s Life Members, the SLSSNB Executive and Staff, and the Club s own Board of Management. My thanks also to our major sponsors for their continued assistance this year - without their support our activities would surely become significantly less viable: Dee Why RSL Club, Commonwealth Bank, Rod Jones First National Real Estate, Henderson Logistics, ICON Event Catering, Catering by Design, Bakers Delight Centro Warriewood, Bennett Surfboards, Harry s Butchery and BPM Trading Co. Most importantly, I thank each and every volunteer who patrols our beach and who helps in every way to maintain the viability of our organisation. Jason Oakes President The Board of Management for Narrabeen Beach Surf Lifesaving Club would like to sincerely thank Jason for his efforts over the last t seasons in his role as President and the previous years as Nipper Chairman. Jason has decided to take a short break from the responsibility of leading the club, although he will continue to be a very active member of the leadership team. In his role as President, Jason has achieved a great deal including developing a strategic plan to guide us into the future that will be of benefit to all members at Narrabeen Beach. We all thank Jason for his hard work and dedication to the role and we are assured that this is just a short break and he will be back in harness shortly. Thank you Jason On behalf of the Board of Management and Members of Narrabeen Beach SLSC. Narrabeen Beach Goes Solar For those members who don t often get to fly over the club house, you may not be aware that Narrabeen Beach has gone solar. Through a grant provided by Warringah Council and installation by Autonomous Energy, Narrabeen Beach is able to support our electricity needs by harnessing the energy from the sun. Narrabeen is blessed with such sunny conditions that solar panels can provide most of the clubs daily needs for refrigerators, lighting and other daytime power. We would like to thank Warringah Council and Autonomous Energy for their support in the process and installation. We have plans to further reduce our consumption of resources through installation of rain water collection tanks and possible solar hot water when funds become available. AnnualReport

FinanceandAdministrationReport 6 The Finance and Administration (F & A) Board are pleased to present to the members the accounts and auditor s report for the financial year for Narrabeen Beach Surf Lifesaving Club Inc. The club has continued to grow in membership and complexity with increased regulatory requirements and other factors making the job of administration and finance now almost a full time job. Over the last season the club has achieved some significant milestones. These include increased community group usage for the function room with Yoga, Pilates and Zumba classes and the very successful hosting of the Narrabeen Junior carnival plus Ocean Swim, Narrathon and Downwind Ocean Ski race. The function room continues to be central in the financial stability of the club, with weddings and other functions generating a good source of income that will support the bank loans as well as other club needs. Our function coordinator, Alison Annett has received many letters of thanks from brides who had their special day made even more special by her dedication and professionalism. We thank Alison sincerely for all her hard work and effort. The function coordinator role was in addition to the administration work that Alison also performs. Alison has many tasks to perform for the club and all this is done on a part time basis. I know Alison puts in extra hours without reward and we should all be thankful for her efforts. The increased administration in running our club could not have been completed without the support of Fiona Russell. Fiona has prepared the reports for the BOM meetings throughout the year as well as the full year accounts for the auditor. My sincere thanks go to Fiona for all her work assisting with the accounts. The Finance & Administration Board has a number of members including David Cook as Admin and Member Registration plus Tracey Lake as Function Manager and licensee. These members are always working hard behind the scenes and get little thanks for their efforts. I would like to sincerely thank each one for their dedication, as I know how much work has to be put in just to keep the club functioning. Our President, Jason Oakes has also contributed many thankless hours in assisting with accounts, members bar and functions. Jason is a tireless worker for the club and I sincerely thank him for all his hard work and assistance. NarrabeenBeachSurfLifesavingClub Finance. The accounts and balance sheet for the financial year have been audited and are included in this annual report for presentation to the AGM. The financial position of the club continues to be sound with income from the function room, kiosk, club functions, such as comedy night, and carnivals all contributing to an operating surplus. This income allows us to fully service operating costs, loan and lease repayments. Over the next four months the club will complete payment of three leases and members should note that the bank loan is now reduced by over $50,000. In summary the club had an operating surplus of $ 65,106 after interest on an income of $309,000. This result is down a little from last year due to reduced kiosk and function room sales and has allowed us to write down cost of the building with amortisation of $86,500 against capital building works. This process will continue as the income from activities will eventually write off the full building cost. Sponsorship. Over the last season, we received significant support through sponsorship from many companies, club members, families and others. This has been in cash and in kind and it all helps to keep the club functioning. Our major sponsors are Dee Why RSL Club, through the Club Housie program, Warringah Council and Branch sponsors such as Unilever Streets and Coca Cola. Patrol side advertising is supported by Henderson Logistics and Rod Jones First National Narrabeen. Carnivals and events were sponsored by the Commonwealth Bank, and Dee Why RSL Club. Our comedy night is sponsored by Roger Osborne of Icon Catering which is a big help. Significant support also comes from BPM Trading, Bakers Delight, Catering by Design, Harry s Butchery Cromer and other family members. My thanks also go to Paul Jones & Associates our Honorary Auditors for their work in our financial accounts.

I would like to remind all members that any support is most welcome and any increase in sponsorship will allow us to purchase much needed equipment. If you know any company who would like to support your club then pass on the details to us and we can do the rest. Even a small donation will greatly assist your club and it is fully tax deductable. Kiosk Income from the kiosk this year was down a little to $37,800 in and this s only been achieved through the hard work of a few dedicated people. I would like to thank Claire McManaway for her tireless efforts and volunteer hours. She has been ably supported by many Mums and Dads on Sundays and we thank you all for your hard work especially during carnivals. Other members have helped with the kiosk on Saturdays and public holidays during summer with Siena Byrne and Will McInnes doing most of the hard yards. The kiosk is there to provide additional support for the club, so if you can give an hour or two behind the counter, please let us know and we would be very appreciative of your help. Function Room The demand for the function room for weddings and other events continues to assist the needs for income to the club. Summer weddings are popular with ceremonies often held on the lawn facing the beach with guests then proceeding upstairs to the function room. We have also seen a full year of licensed bar service for functions. This has led to an increase in function room bar sales to around $,000 for the year to April Our staff are fully RSA trained and functions are catered with two drinks packages including wines, beers and soft drinks. It is club policy not to supply spirits as this can lead to increased difficulty with patrons and for our staff. Catering is still organised by hirers to select their own requirements from self catering to event catering through companies such as Icon Event Catering, Catering by Design During the week, the room is made available at very reasonable rent to community groups such as Pilates, Zumba and Yoga. This provides a modest but ongoing income. Plans are inplace to expand mid week functions for business groups and other community use. Opportunity exists to promote these events that will make use of our beautiful facility during the quieter periods. Members Bar The members bar could increase income through use by members for functions such as birthdays plus the usual Friday and Sunday night trading. We still get a keen group on State of Origin nights and on other occasions that really enjoy the experience. Come on down and have a qui drink with a few friends or organise a family party at one of the best venues on the Northern Beaches. In closing, I would sincerely like to thank all those who helped with the Finance & Administration Board this season, especially Jason Oakes, Fiona Russell, David Cook and Tracey Lake. I now look forward to an even more exciting year ahead. 10 Lifesaving&EducationReport The Board of Lifesaving and Education for the season comprised Gordy Coburn as Education Supervisor, Kaz Marks as Proficiency Supervisor, Bekky Sinni as Equipment Supervisor and myself as Patrol Supervisor. The trainers for this season were Paul O`Keefe, Kaz Marks, Richard Whipp, Rob Cook, Matt Murphy and Gordy Coburn, while our trainee trainers were Belinda McCann, Sarah Coburn, Skye Holt, Ian Harper and myself. We also had five assessors - Paul O`Keefe, Kaz Marks, Richard Whipp, Rob Cook and towards the end of the season Gordy Coburn as well, after becoming fully endorsed as an assessor. Thanks to the contribution of these extraordinary people, we were able to achieve superb outcomes that resulted in some excellent accolades for Narrabeen Beach. Awards This season we had 46 candidates who achieved a variety of awards: Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC), Bronze Medallion, Advanced Resuscitation Techniques Certificate (ARTC), Inshore Rescue Boat Crew (IRBC), Silver Medallion Basic Beach Management (SMBBM) and Assessor Bronze Medallion. SRC Training Rob Cook and Belinda McCann ran the SRC course and trained 14 Nippers to become patrolling members. They enjoyed some joint training days with South Narrabeen, and Belinda also went and assisted them with their program. Once qualified, the young SRC members undertook Nipper s water safety duties, along with some Sunday patrolling. This allowed our Nipper mornings to run smoothly with plenty of hands to help, thanks to the assistance of these great young members. Bronze Medallion Training Initiative This season, we introduced a new training concept for the Bronze Medallion award - a joint training initiative between the North Narrabeen, South Narrabeen and Narrabeen Clubs. The plan was originally discussed over some quiet waters and then evolved into a meeting - before we knew it Gordy had ascended to chief motivator of the collaborative effort. We trained 16 new Bronze Medallions in two squads for the Narrabeen Beach Club, along with several other new Bronze members for the North Narrabeen and South Narrabeen Clubs. The competence of the Bronze Medallion members being assessed as part of this initiative was noticed, which led to the icing on the cake when the trainers from the three Clubs were awarded Initiative of the Year at the branch awards night. Patrols Thank you to our outstanding Patrol Captains - this season the dedicated members who undertook this role were Alex Buckton, Gordy Coburn, Ian Harper, Matt Murphy, Paul O`Keefe, Tracey Lake, Wayne Schwebel, Rob Cook, David Cook, Sean Townsend, Richard Whipp and myself. With the Patrol Captains at the helm we achieved collective hours of patrolling. However, these hours are only a snapshot of the time our patrols often dedicated, so thank you all for your outstanding efforts with the other activities as well, including proficiencies and water safety. Patrol Assessment Competition At the branch awards night this year we tied first place with North Steyne in the Patrol Assessment Competition. This is based on assessments throughout the season by branch inspectors who put the patrol on duty through several different checks and scenarios including beach layout, equipment readiness, as well as first aid and rescue scenarios. This accolade is a great credit to all patrolling members. Joshua Buckton Director of Lifesaving & Education 8 NarrabeenBeachSurfLifesavingClub

Season Statistics. IRB Report Our Club was fortunate to gain some new IRB equipment this season. At the start of this year we acquired a new IRB thanks to the NSW Government s Ministry for Police and Emergency Services, who funded a grant from SLSNSW. We also obtained two new IRB motors thanks to the Commonwealth Bank Referral Partner Program. They are a very dedicated bunch who provide a priceless service. This season s IRB crew squad ran for six weeks. As soon as it commenced, Narrabeen s infamous shore dump booked itself in for over half of the course duration. The candidates who undertook this course were extremely resilient and put up with the trainers bashing and bumping them in some tough conditions. The training was led by Paul O`Keefe along with Rob Cook, Ian Harper, Jason Oakes and myself. Only once did an IRB flip unintentionally straight onto the beach - I happened to be the driver and to this day blame the 1.5 metre shore dump. ActiononabiggerdayatNarrabeen Roving Patrols We will hopefully be kicking off an IRB driver course again soon. If you think you have what it takes, then let anyone in the education team know so we can book you in. Thanks for an action packed season and hope to see everybody ready for their proficiencies soon. 12 Lifesaving&EducationReport Education Report This is my second season in the role of Education Supervisor at Narrabeen Beach and I tell you, it wasn t all beer and skittles. The season was tough at times - we had no beach, wild seas, a huge amount of rain and the beach was closed for many weekends. This made it very hard for our great team of trainers and assessors. Proficiencies With the rough conditions, it was difficult to get every Bronze holder up to speed and proficient for the season. As a result, the trainers had to put in a large amount of hours. The trainers and I would like to thank every member that put in the effort to complete their proficiency. As we approach the season, we look forward to members striving to be proficient as soon as possible once patrols begin. Spring Bronze Course We formed a training team with our neighbours (North Narrabeen and South Narrabeen). Initially, we started off small with a few combined nights and a water session at each beach so the Bronze squads could experience different surf breaks. This worked very well and on assessment day resulted in the training squads from all three clubs gaining their Bronze Medallions. Well done to everyone. Bronze Medallion and SRC Squad The summer Bronze training took the next step of fully combining the squads, as there was now a great bond and friendship with our neighbouring clubs. We had huge support from some of the branch assessors who helped run a couple of the squad nights this also provided our young Bronze trainers with some extra knowledge of exactly what the assessors were looking for. We even did a mock assessment the week before the real appraisal to help fine tune both the Bronzes and the trainers. I am very proud of what we have achieved this season. Surf Rescue Certificate (SRC) Rob Cook and Belinda McCann trained a group of Under 14 nippers to enable them to receive their SRC awards. As future lifesavers, these 14 young people will be a great asset to our patrols. Awards Gained As well as our patrolling awards, we also trained big groups of Nippers to complete their surf Awareness and Surf Education awards. This was primarily managed by Rob Cook and a large thank you to Rob for training our upcoming patrol members. Other courses Well done to all participants for the following awards that were also achieved this season through Branch: Basic Beach Management Silver Medallion ARTC Spinal Management IRB Crew Certificates The awards gained are summarised below: Award: BronzeMedallion SurfRescueCertificate ARTC AssessorAwards GordonCoburn (EducationSupervisor) SilverMedallionBasicBeach Management IRBCrewCertificate SpinalManagement SurfofficialLevel Total: 47 Congratulations to all award recipients, as not only do you achieve a personal reward, you also improve the patrolling strength at Narrabeen. One day this will be used to save a life NarrabeenBeachSurfLifesavingClub

Lifesaving&EducationReport IRB Training Paul O Keefe once again produced an elite group of members to add to our IRB crew. The conditions proved tough and treacherous throughout their training and they were ready for anything. Spinal Management Looking Forward In the season ahead, we look forward to growing the support and friendships we have developed with our neighbouring clubs. The training and education team has done a terrific job this year and next season we hope to further combine with our neighbouring clubs at North Narrabeen and South Narrabeen to complete training with a more professional emphasis. This will lift the standards right along the beach at Narrabeen. One of our other plans is to put together a group of members to compete in patrol competitions at Carnivals, plus Branch and State Championships and other events. We will also be helping more members achieve higher awards to strengthen our patrols at Narrabeen Beach. A huge THANK YOU to all our trainers, water safety and assessors for the season of A special mention also to Sarah-Grace Coburn, Skye Holt, Matt Murphy, Belinda McCann, Rob Cook, Ian Harper and Josh Buckton who were the backbone of the training program that supported me. The club owes a great vote of thanks to the trainers and all who assisted with training of new members and with older members gaining greater skills. The training team also achieved a high level of recognition by winning the Sydney Northern Beaches Initiative of the Year through development of a coordinated training programme for the three Narrabeen surf clubs of North Narrabeen, Narrabeen Beach and South Narrabeen. 12 NarrabeenBeachSurfLifesavingClub

SurfSportsReport Once again we have had a full calendar of events this season with the help of all our members. Thank you to my family for all their support throughout the year. The Board of Surf Sports has again turned out a great season. Thank you to those on the Board especially Ian Harper, Ross Tester, Claire McManaway, Sean Townsend, Alex Buckton, Graham Cook and Fiona Russell. Thank you also to the Board of Lifesaving and Education including Joshua, Gordon and the team. The Board of Youth and Membership Development with Tammy and Steve, plus the Board of Finance with Wayne, and our hard working President, Jason - all get my thanks for their support over the season. Special thanks to all our sponsors for supporting our events this season with the Commonwealth Bank, Bakers Delight and Bennett Boards assisting with funding and other items. Events We started the season off with the Narrafun Ocean Swim and we were delighted to have some fire fighters join us as participants. The surf was kind to us with a great day had by all. The next event on the calendar was the Ocean Series Downwind - which actually turned out to be half downwind and a return journey directly back into the wind due to strong ocean currents and dangerous surf off the headlands. The event was won by Tim Jacobs with a very close field behind. Presentation was held in the Members Room with everybody enjoying our hospitality. The Narrabeen Beach Junior Carnival was a great success with the surf on side and a beach large enough to run on. The day was well attended by all clubs, including our own which was represented well. The last event on the calendar was the Narrathon with all hands on deck. The weather worked and so did the competitors, with a strong field from our own club. Lastly, our Presentation Night hosted by Pete Wells once again turned our venue into a festive night of entertainment, and it all ran like clockwork. Thank you to Catering by Design (Karn Slade) for creating a German Oktoberfest menu and also catering for the evening. Congratulations to all the winners on the night with Bruce Dando taking out the Club Championship award and Pete Wells the Competitor of the Year Award. Keep up the good work. Robert Buckton Director Surf Sports ClubChampion CompetitoroftheYear Results BruceDando PeteWells 14 Our officials deserve special thanks for turning up to all the carnivals on the calendar. Narrabeen is well represented by a dedicated group of officials comprising Kaz Marks, Ross Tester, Carol Moss, Steve Price, Matt Price, Gary Foster and our newest official Deidre McAlinden. One of the new initiatives we have seen this year is the introduction of competitor rash vests for higher visibility in the water events. Let s focus on winning some bling next knew what hit them. Congratulations to year at State which will be held in March at Kirsten McFadden, Jill Brooks and Jody Umina Beach again. All welcome for a great Murphy. What a race! couple of days on the Central Coast. We want to see more women in the water next year, so come on girls, come down to training and enjoy the great lifestyle of a competitor. Tim Smith has risen into a strong competitor excelling in his ski results and competing in all the iron man races. Well done Tim. 18 YouthandMembershipDevelopmentReport It is with great pleasure that I share with you the highlights of our Nippers Season First of all, let me start with a HUGE thanks to the Junior Board who worked extraordinarily hard to make things happen this season: Stephen Price (Vice President), Robert Cook, Matt Price, Brad Hunter, Jen Hunter, Stephen Patten, Deidre McAlinden and Priscilla Singer. Apart from all the usual Sunday morning tasks these members participated in planning meetings, and volunteered a lot of additional hours and paperwork to keep Nippers running from week to week. Goals for Season We identified the following goals at the start of the season: Expand further on our formal education program with the support of our top class training team. Focus on our Under 13/14 groups progressing through the Rookie Program this season. Continue our focus on water safety, ocean swimming and board paddling development, with additional board training sessions to begin from the commencement of the season. Further development of carnival attendance, team spirit and support at carnivals. I m pleased to say that we were able to deliver all of these goals. We also continued with our Give it a Go and you re a Hero approach for our Juniors. As one of the smallest clubs on the Northern Beaches Branch we place emphasis on maintaining a friendly environment where younger members can gain surf awareness, skills and confidence while enjoying the experience. We make every effort to balance this group with those who wish to further develop in competitions. Youth Membership We welcomed 185 registered Junior members for Season , and 180 stayed with us right through to the end. A retention rate of 95% is testament to the quality and dedication of our Age Managers, along with the increased focus on the formal education elements of the Nipper program. Our Junior Membership comprised 21% in the Under 6-7 educational groups and 70% in the competitive age groups (Under 8-13). The remaining 10% was made up of our SRC crew (15 in total). Further to this, we also had approximately 12 active patrolling members aged years, most of who came through from our Junior ranks. Junior Activities Highlights Season will be remembered for the highest number of rainy Sundays. However, luckily we had agreed early on to increase our focus on a more formal education approach to Nippers. With Rob Cook providing guidance to Age Managers and running basic First Aid/CPR lessons on wet weather days, we managed to keep all of the kids occupied. Even Nipper parents learnt a lot along the way about basic emergency situations and how to handle them. We continue to evolve with increased attendance at all of the Northern Beaches Branch carnivals, and we were also pleased to register five Junior competitors for the State Carnival at Ocean Beach, Umina. We ran our additional Board Training sessions on Monday and Friday evenings and we hope to be able to increase participation in future seasons with the assistance of our senior members. 16 NarrabeenBeachSurfLifesavingClub

We also had some of our younger members cause an upset by taking out some of the Perpetual Trophies, but more on that later. Without Age Managers, Nippers quite simply would not function. We had 19 Age Managers for the season, 45% of these are Bronze Medallion holders. It is not a requirement to be a Bronze Medallion holder to be an Age Manager, so we welcome all who are interested in these roles. A big THANK YOU goes to the following Age Managers as well as their assistants and helpers for Season During the 2012/2013 season, we went a step further with our approach to Junior member education and the feedback was very positive. In fact, we had a total of 185 Nippers receive their Surf Education awards this season. Rob Cook conducted some formal education sessions with some of the Junior age groups, which saw the Under 10/11/12 groups participate in basic first aid and DRABC. The support of our top class training team at Narrabeen Beach is always a very welcome assistance for our Age Managers. Under 6 (18 Nippers): Rachel Piggot, Mark Dartnell Under 7 (20 Nippers): Kit Routledge, Nigel Crowley THANKS to Robert Cook and Belinda McCann for all of their support to our Juniors and Rookies under the guidance and support of Gordon Coburn, Education Supervisor. Under 8 (34 Nippers): Greg Duce, Ian Telfer Under 9 (30 Nippers): Deidre McAlinden, Paul Oudhof, Stefan Schaeren, Sean Flynn Under 10 (14 Nippers): Craig Furness Under 11 (33 Nippers): Brad Hunter, Simon McMahon, Brett Worne, Pete Mays Under 12 /13 (16 Nippers): Graeme Walsh Under 14 (15 Rookies): Steve Cooper and Trainers, Rob Cook and Belinda McCann. Education and Training Without a doubt one of the biggest achievements this season was our 15 Rookies achieving their Surf Rescue Certificates (SRC). In previous years we have only ever had up to five Under 14 Rookies at best, so this has been a major highlight for us. I m also pleased to add that around seven of these kids have been with us since they were six or seven years old. Our SRC Squad AnnualReport

Nippers Water Safety A huge THANKS for another successful year to our Water Safety Team headed by Stephen Patten and Matt Price, along with the support of our Lifesaving and Education Team. 21 Nippers We need to especially mention all of our competitive ocean swimmers as we are exceptionally proud of them for giving it a go at each carnival: Under 9 Kalan Murphy, Thibault Iatrov- Kosterman, Callum Fitzgibbon Under 10 - William Cook, Daniel Furness, William Hall Under 11 - Luke Buckton, Ella Cook, Ashleigh O Leary, Nick Walsh Under 12 - Thomas Walsh, Mayu Fujinami, Tianna Andrews We would like to congratulate Monique Hore and Tylah Price who made the effort to attend the State Carnival in Umina during March Nothing could be finer than the conditions at Umina became the catchcry due to the worst ever weather and water conditions experienced during a State Carnival. Congratulations to our entire Club medal winners - we hope you come back next year to contest your title. Finally, a big THANKS to the parents and friends of Narrabeen Beach Nippers who help each week with the running of Nippers, assisting at carnivals, BBQ duty and attendance at our club fundraising activities. Without you all we simply would not be able to exist. We look forwarding to seeing you back again next season. Monique and Tylah waited till Sunday to finally compete in the Under 9 beach flags and sprints. We thank them for their tenacious approach, despite the challenging elements. Finally, thanks must go to Stephen Price, Ross Tester, Deidre McAlinden and Matt Price who acted in their capacity as officials at all Junior carnivals. Without officials we cannot enter competitors into carnivals. So a huge THANKS for all of their work as officials. 22 TuffClub(WinterSwimming) So what are you doing on a Sunday morning during winter, probably stuck at home waiting for the weather to warm up. It s time you tried a something worthwhile. IT S THE TUFF CLUB! Down at Narrabeen every Sunday right through the winter we run the Tuff Club which starts with a light jog along the beach and then a quick dip in the Pacific Ocean. This is followed by hot soup, bread rolls and bask in the sunshine. This can all be yours at the Tuff Club. Over the winter months, members of the club from Nippers to Seniors get down to the sundeck on a Sunday morning at around 10:30 and go for a swim. This is not as crazy as it sounds, as the water temperature will often be 18 to 19 o C and the air temperature can be much colder. Once you have tried it you will wonder why you had never done it before. Scientific studies have also shown that the saltwater swim will improve your resistance to colds and flu. No Tuff Club member will be seen coughing and spluttering this winter. Each member pays a $2 fee for the privilege and will have a turn at preparing the soup for the day. At the start of spring, we then count up your swims and if you have reached the minimum standard you will receive a new Tuff Club hoodie or other valuable collector s item on presentation night. You may even keep a few kilograms off during winter. The winter swim season commences in May, straight after patrols finish, with the Narrabeen Shield swim held by North Narrabeen Shivering Sharks. This is a timed relay swim of 50 m with any club with Narrabeen in its name entering a team of ten swimmers. Closest to their designated time is the winner and fierce competition is in evidence. Teams can win by 0.1 of a second plus great honour and a free coffee mug go to the victors. After the race, there is a good feed including soup and a few laughs back at the Sharks club. In 2012 we had a top team but missed the top prize by only 1.8 seconds. It has been great to see a few Nippers getting into the spirit this year with William & Ella Cook, Alexander & Jacob Hall plus Ollie Oudhof heading the group. Narrabeen Tuff Club Swimmers Last winter in 2012 we had a number of brave souls who would attend as often as possible. These swimmers would take anything that the weather would dish out and results for the year are as follows including Top Tuff honours being shared by Gordon Coburn, Deidre McAlinden and Jason Oakes. We are still running Tuff Club every Sunday so come on down and you will be surprised how habit forming it can be. As long as you get your hair wet and make a soup at least once, is all the criteria for a mention on the honour list. 23 SocialEvents Our various social nights continue to be a big part of the glue that holds our club together. These functions are arranged to provide members with an opportunity to enjoy being part of a surf life saving club quite apart from patrolling or competing. All of our regular functions, plus a few extra fun nights, were held again this season and we would like to thank the organisers who arranged catering, decorations, guest performers and hosts, ticket sales and many other things so our nights could be a lot of fun. Everest Night The last event for this season was the Everest documentary hosted by Pete Wells and this was a terrific night. We had around 120 people including many Narrabeen locals who wanted to see the film and listen to the talk by Pete on his epic journey to the top of the world. Halloween This year we had arranged for a Nipper Halloween party and this is the first time for this event and was a great start to the season. The younger members got all dressed up for the occasion and Ana Manzanos did a fantastic job with the decorations. Even Sean Townsend got into the Boogie man role and did his best to excite the Nippers. It was an event that we should continue as it was great fun. State of Origin & Grand Finals Along with special events we also run regular footy nights with the State of Origin being plenty of fun. Cheering your team home at the club is almost as good as being at the ground with plenty of atmosphere and new bar stools for all. Pizza is usually ordered or we have a BBQ and a special event includes pass the ball competitions with prizes for the winners. It is just a fun night and as most are driving home care is taken with the drinks. Comedy Night One of the big social nights of the season is the comedy night. Sean and Carolyn Townsend did a fantastic job in organising what was a thoroughly enjoyable evening with a full house enjoying a number of acts. The highlight of this year s evening was undoubtedly the appearance of professional funny man Gary Eck, who had everyone doubled over and holding their sides from all the laughing. Thanks also to Roger from Icon Catering who once more provided delicious finger food to accompany the good laughs. In addition to the regular events, we have begun hosting members looking for a venue for private celebrations such as birthday parties. These can be held on Friday nights or Sunday or for that big occasion we have the main function room available at patrolling members rates. We encourage all of our members to come along to the Members Bar to mingle, catch up or just relax on a Friday evening and Sunday afternoon. AnnualReport
