2 MONTHLY RESULTS There has been some classic racing this month, with Peter Elford joining The Immortals in winning the 3 events on the night, the return of a turbo charged expectant father Sean Neale and a bevvy of close finishes in many races. However, one standout was this month s point score winner, El Presidente, who was consistent among the high scoring points each week. So, Steve Mathews recorded 59 points followed by Mr Consistent, Michael Holt with 54, Count de Money Denis Ward (52), the Cheetah who stands for judges, Michael Slattery and The Wasabi Kid Alex Zavgorodniy with 48 points. 3 bits and pieces Who was the recently naturalised marathon runner that was spotted running up the Rose Bay hill past a well known girl s school? Nothing wrong with that!! Only trouble is our marathon runner was too engrossed in the hockey game being played in the school, tripped up on some uneven pathway and fell heavily. Much to his pleasure, he had unlimited attention from the hockey players tending to his badly grazed legs. All this care and attention must ve had some impact... in the recent Sydney Half Marathon with 10,454 finishers, Birchy came 279th with a time of which was a PB putting him in the top 3% of finishers. Good to see John Romyn back in the water after shoulder surgery. JR swam the 50 the other night in 31.47s one armed. desndawn trophy sick b ay This month s 400 was swam for the Des n Dawn Trophy and the winner was Michael Holt with a break of 1.25s. Incidently, Mike won both Des n Dawn events last year. Bob Lowe is recovering from surgery for a crook hernia. Maybe our relationships with the starter won t be so strained!!! june2013

4 FROM THE COMMITTEE ROOM Over the years there has been much discussion and debate about Cheetahs swimming a stroke other than that designated for an event, in particular style events, and then collecting prizes and points for podium placings. Style events, as we know them, are those which have a breastroke and backstroke discipline. The matter was recently brought to head when a senior Cheetah put a proposal to the Committee to review the situation suggesting a swimmer s stroke other than that programmed should not figure in a towel win and not receive maximum points for that placing. There was a great deal of discussion amongst committee members, some for the proposal and some debating that the situation should remain as it currently stands. Those opposed to the proposal saw this, amongst other things, as somewhat discriminatory in that it possibly precludes a swimmer from monthly point scores and 6 monthly point scores. Further, for those unable to swim, say, backstroke or breastroke, possible reluctance to swim in the event. Others saw this as a benefit to those swimmers unable to swim backstroke or breastroke for one reason or another given that many swim clubs would not allow different strokes to be used in like circumstances. It was agreed by a majority vote that swimmers who swim a style other than that programmed for Style events should only receive points for their placing in their respective heat and be ineligible for trophy or points for podium placings. Swim programme for the July December period will be finalised in the next week or so and be forwarded to all and sundry. Getting new members is always an issue and has been for years, so meetings will be held with the Marketing Dept of City Tatts in the next few weeks to investigate ways and means of attracting new members. Also, there are members who were once active and who we haven t seen poolside for a while. It would be good to have you back. Hopefully soon we will have new polos, swim caps, swimmers as prizes or for sale in addition to towels and goggles. As mentioned a meeting is planned with Marketing Dept of City Tatts to further develop our web site. As you can see at the beginning of this Chatter a link has been established on the Club s web page. At this stage it carries basic information however it is planned to significantly enhance our page in the future. More on this as it progresses. It has been discussed on many occasions about weekly prizes. Towels are the norm however some Cheetahs can set up their own stall at the markets they have won so many. So, it has been decided to discuss with the main club about getting credit notes for $12 that can be spent on food or drinks as a new weekly towel prize. Speaking of towels prizes, Captain Keevers advises he has 27 towels still outstanding from last year for 16 Cheetahs. See JK NOW as it has been decided to cancel all those not collected by 30 June. cronulla swim The Cronulla Sharks Swimming Club has invited the Cheetahs to its Winter Carnival later this month at the Cronulla Swim Complex on the beach. The Sharks are great hosts running a well organised carnival and putting on a sumptuous meal afterwards in the surf club. Our Cheetahs have succeeded in the past at various events. 5 ski weekend Perisher won t be the same as the Cheetahs take over Boonoona Lodge on the 6, 7 and 8 September Hopefully there will be plenty of snow for those attending! golf weekend Our would be Adam Scotts (and others) are gearing up for the annual pilgrimage to Dormie House at the end of the month. The event will take on an international flavour this year with David Pugh s brother out from Wales. Apart from the Golf Weekend he s out here for the Lions Tour... why you ask!!!!!!! june2013

6 from the archives Cheetahs Chatter #1... the very first issue Christmas Here are some items from that initial issue. A number of Cheetahs spend their winter Sunday mornings braving the cold waters as members of various winter swimming clubs. The winter swimming season culminated with the Australian Championships at Manly Olympic Pool on Sunday 18 September. The following Cheetahs were successful in their respective events... The World Masters Swimming Championships were held in Brisbane during October with a number of Cheetahs seen in action... In what was described by Club President, Bob Carlon, as one of the best swims he had even seen, our resident world record holder John McDiarmid picked up a gold medal in the over 50yrs 100 metres freestyle. Medal winners were... John McDiarmid 1st over 50yrs 100m freestyle 1st combined age relay age over 200yrs Tom Caddy 1st combined age relay age over 280yrs Other Cheetahs who participated admirably included Bob Carlon, Geoff Tindall, Mike Holt, Jamie Jenkins, Phil Madden, Tony Beger & Doug Patrick. DES AND DAWN TROPHY The coverted Des and Dawn Trophy was the main event on the card on 29 September. The 400m event attracted good numbers including the distance champ himself, Des Renford. Dawn was unavailable because of the Seoul Olympics. When the heats were over the final count showed Rod Puskar as the winner with a break of 6.67s. In second place was Jamie Jenkins who broke by 6.13s with Bob Lowe 3rd on STAR ATTRACTION Treasurer Fred Geddes recently visited U.S.A. to see some of the sights. This visit included the compulsory stopover at Las Vegas, the home of gambling & world class entertainment. When asked what shows he had seen & expecting him to answer along the lines of Frank Sinatra, Barbra Streisand, Sammy Davis Jnr or the like, Fred calmly stated he saw Bobby Berosini & the Orangutans. So, if you missed swimming the heats in May, this is your last chance to compete in this prestigious event. In the past Cheetahs have taken on many pursuits outside the pool... Dragon Boat racing, skiing in New Zealand, surfing in Indonesia, paddle boarding in Hawaii, trekking in Tasmania & The Territory to name a few. Now here s a challenge for some... Google...extreme ironing. and finally If you have not joined us yet, come down to the pool at 6pm on Thursday and look us over. And don t be shy, say hello and have a swim!
