VALE Coo Keith Little passed away on 19 June, 2013 aged 93. Coo was an ex- member of the Cheetahs. He was an outstanding swimmer in both surf & pool. He was unbeaten over many years in his relevant age group in national swimming championships, in particular winter swimming titles, & held many titles at Australian Surf Lifesaving Championships. Like many people of his ilk, he passed on his swimming knowledge & skills to many people over many years. Welcome to our latest edition

bits and pieces Who could ever forget those memorable movies starring The Moth? If you haven t already seen them, a private (or public) showing can be arranged. Anyhow, there s another one on the way. Moth made a flying visit interstate to feature in a sequel...something about a horse!!!!!! Stay tuned. If you want to see some preview photos ask The Moth. Speaking of The Moth, our dear leader is heading off to compete in the World Police & Firefighters Games in Dublin. He will be defending his world championship title in the backstroke. Good luck Steve & compete in true Cheetahs style both in & out of the water. There is that famous Chinese restaurant, The Rat House, which has become a favourite haunt over the years by many Cheetahs. Now there is a follow up, The Rat Pool. Our elite Squad was waiting for the pool at Prince Alfred to open early the other Saturday, when keenly spotted by some, were a family of rats running around the pool deck. We were assured that these were local rats & not from any other pool!!! Who was the Cheetah that was dining in a restaurant when he spied a well known broadcaster also dining in the restaurant. A conversation was struck up & it turned out that the people the broadcaster did & didn t like, our Cheetah surprisingly shared the same views. Quote of the month... I m getting too old for this caper. So said our fearless commando, Gary Hartman, after he fell out of a helicopter breaking a few ribs, damaging a few joints & taking a heap of bark off. FOR SALE Want to acquire a week in a time share unit at Surfers Paradise? Where: Tiki Village, in the heart of Surfers Paradise When: any week except school holidays Costs: Transfer fee $125 Current Maintenance Fee $700p.a. Contact: Peter Elford FIJI Unfortunately the Fiji swim at Beachcomber Island is cancelled for this year. The island has experienced a couple of problems in the past year. Firstly, the island was hit to a moderate extent by the cyclone earlier this year. Secondly, a fire in the island s generator caused major damage & the island had to be closed. Repairs have taken longer than expected extending well past the dates of the Fiji swims. It then became a logistic nightmare for the organisers to transfer the swims to a later date so the decision to cancel became easy. Pity as it was the 10th anniversary of the races. No doubt the Cheetahs will be back next year. july2013

cronulla swim The Cronulla Sharks Winter Carnival was cancelled at the last minute as those concerned thought it was a good time to do some pool maintenance. This is a good lesson in reading your s... One Cheetah (who shall remain nameless) who was to swim in this cancelled carnival thought it would be a good move to utilise the rail system from the far reaches down to The Shire... a pleasant trip to the seaside. He became concerned when at around 7.00pm there wasn t any activity around the Cronulla Pool Complex. What is going on? That %#&> Macca has given me a bum steer & got the dates wrong!! He soon found out of the cancellation. Getting home was even more fun given the limited trains at that time of night. Come the following Thursday night swimming & his first target was the poor beleaguered & harassed Race Secretary, berating him for not advising of any cancellation, to be told in no uncertain terms... read your #$%& s!!!!!!!! The Cronulla swim is rescheduled for the following Tuesday 2 July. Full report in next edition. One story coming out of the Cronulla carnival is that a couple of Cheetahs had a gender moment. Firstly, Cheetah #1 changed in the ladies dressing room. He would ve caused mayhem should there have been any of the fairer sex in the room at the time. Cheetah #2 decided to use the ladies facilities however quickly emerged red faced when confronted by a lady. OCEAN SWIMMING The ocean swimming season is over for a few months however here is an article for our ocean swim group to ponder over during the winter months... Australian swimmer Chloe McCardel has recalled how a swarm of box jelly-fish forced her to abandon her goal of becoming the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without a cage. Just 123km into the 177km swim the throng appeared, stinging her all over. It was like massive firewalls of explosions hitting me & I could feel the tentacles, McCardel said. I was in searing pain. My hips were locked. I was pulling it, this tentacle out of my mouth I felt like I was dying. I had one coming out of my mouth. Courtesy SMH. Welcome to our latest edition

squad Those hardy souls who discipline themselves & brave the winter elements for early Saturday morning squad sessions have found a new home at Prince Alfred Park pool. All concerned think this is a good set up, even better that it s FREE. No entrance fee, no parking fee, free... what better way to start the weekend with a leisurely swim & then join the stimulating dialogue around the table of knowledge & the coffee is good too. See you 6.00am Saturday mornings. ski weekend Those Cheetahs wishing to travel to the snow for the Cheetahs Ski Weekend should make arrangements as soon as possible. There are still some vacancies. The dates are 6, 7 & 8 September. golf weekend Dormie House was again the venue for the annual golf weekend with 26 Cheetahs, friends & partners taking part. A full report on the rain soaked event & results will appear in the next edition. No doubt there will be many stories of great shots, near misses, impossible handicaps etc etc. One story that needs to be told... one of our most esteemed members lost his score card. Panic!!!! how could he convince other teams that his team was performing so well (or so he thought). His fears were soon relieved when another esteemed Cheetah found the sodden score card & handed it back to esteemed Cheetah #1 only for esteemed Cheetah #2 to be accused of adding a few more strokes to the score. How could people stoop to such depths to achieve fame!!!! Nothing has changed as evidenced in the 2nd edition of Chatter in With so many of the golf days being played on the South (or good) side of the harbour it was decided by persons unnamed to hold an impromptu day at Cammeray on Friday 11 November. A group of budding, or would be, great white sharks lined up for the afternoon hit off, all intent on winning a trophy of some sort. The players teamed up in their respective groups (one player, who shall remain nameless, could not work out why no one wanted him in his group) & the Cheetahs Northside Championships were under way. A number of good performances were turned in, along with some very ordinary ones. The heat must ve taken its toll as evidenced by John Cross who returned to the clubhouse looking like a stop light. John must ve avoided the sun for the first 9 holes, which he duly won. Fred Geddes was successful in winning the second nine. The nearest the pin prize went to Paul Witts whilst the longest drive of the day went to Bob Lowe (the only good shot he played all day). The overall winner for the day was not decided until the last hole with the eventual master being Bob Carlon who won on a count back from Mel Kilmurray. To conclude what was a great day (even though some of the South side contingent are still unsure how the count back was done), Bob Lowe decided he wanted a second long drive award. Being on that side of the bridge it was agreed that the Malaya Restaurant (where else??) in North Sydney would be a good place to eat. Sydney s No 1 navigator, Bob decided to lead the way from Cammeray to North Sydney. The two carloads of hungry golfers finally arrived at The Malaya after 2 trips across the Harbour Bridge. july2013

from the archives Archives continues to delve into articles from past Chatters. Following are some articles continuing on from 2nd edition of Chatter in On the afternoon of 12 February the inaugural 4 way, 10 a side relay was held at Bondi Icebergs Pool. The brainchild of Geoff Tindall & Russ Jackson in co operation with Bondi Icebergs Club, the event was to be conducted as a 10 man relay between Cheetahs, Bondi Icebergs, Clovelly Eskimos & Balmain Kool Kats. Obviously, the fact that the Cole Classic was conducted on the same day had a bearing on the numbers because the event became 6 man relay. The Cheetahs, represented by Mike Holt, Darrin Jones, Mark Anderson, Danny Sydney, Rod Puskar & Steve Mahnker, won the race quite convincingly with the Eskimos second. Other Cheetahs present included Bob Bransdon & Jim O Brien who represented the Eskimos, John Heuschkel who swam for the Kool Kats & Denis Ward, Bob Lowe, Fred Geddes & Bob Kirby who were spectators. The masterminds, Geoff & Russ, both arrived late, effectively letting their team mates from the Kool Kats down. They stayed too long at the Cole Classic presentation (so they said!) After the swim everyone (well almost) retired to the Icebergs clubhouse for a bbq & a few refreshments. It was here that the organisers decided, as it was only a 6 man race, to draw the winner out of a hat. President of the Kool Kats, Ron White, drew the winner & there were no prizes for guessing who won. Perhaps Geoff & Russ might bring the trophy to the Cheetahs one night to show us. The trophy, by the way, was a solid wooden flipper made & donated by Cheetah Rocky Langford on behalf of the Kool Kats. STAR ATTRACTION Cast your mind back to last month s Chatter & Fred s trip to Las Vegas... well Whilst in Hong Kong on a recent business trip, Mark Anderson turned on the TV during one of his few moments of relaxation. Would you believe the show was a performance by Bobby Beresini & the Orangoutangs. Mark commented they put on a really good show. Christmas Party If you need to know where there is a restaurant in an obscure place where no one can find you, just ask Bob Lowe. This year s Christmas party was held at Buon Gusto Restaurant in Abercrombie St. Not only was it in an out of the way location, it had a previously unknown party room, which became the scene of our party. Having our own private room certainly made for a great atmosphere once all members arrived. There are no prizes for guessing which group was at least half an hour late. Either our organiser or the restaurant appeared to get the numbers wrong, as, at one stage, it appeared we would not get everyone seated. With a bit of shuffling & fiddling everything worked out well. Is there a common theme here... refer earlier!!!! upcoming events July 4 75 Freestyle, 50 Freestyle, 50 Breastroke July Freestyle, 2x50 Breastroke, 50 Freestyle July Freestyle, 75 Medley, 25 Freestyle July Freestyle, 50 Freestyle, 50 Backstroke The next round of the Memorial Trophy will be held on 11 July.
