4 Coaching Staff DAN ROSS Head Coach 21st season Hometown: North Augusta, S.C. College: Purdue (1984) Family: Sally, wife Eric (17), Matt (15), Andrew (11), sons Dan Ross is in his 22nd year as head coach of the Purdue men s swimming and diving team and in his 30th year of association with Boilermaker aquatics. With an all-time dual meet record of (.548), Ross has seen and implemented many improvements in the Boilermaker program : A Farewell To Kings Ross was confronted with a difficult question at the start of the season; How far will this team get without Louis Paul? The Boilermakers did all right without their former Big Ten Champion and All-American, dropping just one spot in the conference standings and finishing 16th at the NCAA Championships. The question gets harder for Ross this season as he ponders how far will this team get without Giordan Pogioli. Much has been written and much more will be written about the former All-American, Big Ten Champion and varsity record holder, but for right now, Ross has to look at who s available to make their own mark in the Purdue record books. The core of this year s squad will be its returning NCAA qualifiers: Joe Colley, Chris Etherington, Romain Maire and Trey Smith, who helped Purdue attain its best finish ever at the national championships. Colley, Etherington and Smith, along with Pogioli, combined for a 15th-place finish in the 200 medley relay; and Maire qualified for his third NCAA meet in as many years, competing in the 200 backstroke and 200 individual medley. Etherington literally came out of nowhere to give Purdue a top-notch scoring threat in the sprint freestyle and butterfly. A midseason addition, Etherington received Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honors after winning 6 of 6 events at Arizona State. He proceeded to score in three individual events at Big Tens in addition to setting a new varsity record in the 100 fly with a time of Etherington also scored as part of the 200 freestyle and 400 medley relays. Colley and Smith had their best seasons yet as Boilermakers with both posting lifetime bests in their respective events. Smith, a sprint freestyler, lowered his personal record in the 50 free to and brought his 100 free mark down a full second to Colley scored in two individual events at Big Tens and swam leadoff for the Boilermakers fifth-place 400 medley relay, which recorded a varsity record of 3: Smith, Etherington and Pogioli also were part of this relay. Maire s strength is his versatility, which has allowed him to remain Purdue s top option in both individual medley races, plus the backstroke and freestyle. His top times from last season in the 200 back (1:44.82) and 400 IM (3:51.24) are the third fastest recorded in program history. Purdue s diving corps is a tremendous comfort to Ross, and should be able to help the team win a lot of dual meets for years to come. Last season, under the guidance of first-year mentor and Big Ten Coach of the Year Adam Soldati, Boilermaker divers won four conference Diver of the Week certificates and scored 114 points at Big Tens. Additionally, junior Steven LoBue won three All-America citations while rewriting the entire varsity record book. Bragging Rights During his career at Purdue, Ross has coached 15 individual Big Ten champions plus one relay team, 15 individual NCAA All- Americans (including honorable mentions) and several international competitors. Among the international competitions that Ross swimmers have participated in: Olympics and Olympic Trials, FINA World Championships, FINA Open Water World Championships, World University Games, Southeast Asian Games, Pan American Games, Pan Pacific Games and the Maccabian Games. He has coached eight Purdue swimmers to the U.S. Olympic Trials, including Pogioli, Nick Cenci and 2003 graduate Javier Diaz, who is a three-time Mexican Olympian (1996, 2000, 2004). Diaz competed for Mexico at the 2003 World University Games in Korea and was a member of the 800 freestyle relay team at the 2004 Summer Olympics. At the 1992 Olympic Trials, Brian Daly and John Klinge swam the 200 back. In 1996, Matt Brown competed in the 200 and 400 IM s. And in 2000, Matt Martin swam the 400 free, the 1,500 free and the 400 IM; junior Tad Sayce swam the 100 fly, and senior Jon Duncan swam the 100 free. Adding to his personal success, Ross has been named Big Ten Coach of the Year twice for his leadership of the and squads. More recently, Ross received news this fall that he would be part of Dennis Dale s coaching staff at the 2007 World University Games in Bangkok, Thailand. Dale, who serves as the men s head coach at the University of Minnesota, named Ross an assistant coach along with Northwestern s Bob Groseth and Ohio State s Bill Wadley. Ross not only is excited to work alongside some of his closest friends, but he ll also get another opportunity to coach Pogioli on a world stage. 5 Coaching Staff Speedo Smarts Ross has been able to establish a program known for its academic excellence. He encourages a balance between school, swimming and social activities in all his swimmers lives. Because of that balance, Ross has produced four CoSIDA Academic All-Americans in Brian Daly (1993), Dean Fredette (1994), Matt Brown (1997) and Louis Paul (2005) and several more honorable mention selections since his start at Purdue. This past spring, Pogioli was named to a second-consecutive CoSIDA Academic All-America all-district team. Ross also has coached six CSCAA Academic All-America selections and five honorable mention selections, as well as 70 Academic All-Big Ten athletes and five Big Ten Medal of Honor winners in Daly (1992), Brown (1997) Kovacs (1999), Paul (2005) and Pogioli (2006). At the start of the school year, Ross team and four other Boilermaker intercollegiate programs were presented with the school s inaugural 25/75 Award. Men s swimming and diving was honored because it finished among the national top 25 during the athletic year while maintaining a cumulative grade-point average that met or exceeded expectations over four consecutive semesters, thereby supporting Purdue s goal of reaching a 75 percent graduation rate. Of the 33 student-athletes on the roster, 18 either made the Purdue Coach s Honor Roll or Athletics Director s Honor Roll. Coach s Honor Roll recognizes those Boilermakers with a semester GPA between 3.0 and 3.49; the AD s Honor Roll is made of student-athletes with semester GPA s of 3.5 or higher. Bleeding Gold and Black Ross involvement with Purdue swimming and diving began in 1977, when he walked on to the swim team. He competed in the individual medley and middle distance freestyle events. In 1980, Ross received the Most Improved Swimmer Award and was named team co-captain in After graduating, Ross continued at Purdue in a quarter-time position during the season and then served as a half-time assistant coach the next year. He was given the full-time assistant position from 1983 to 1985, and in 1985 he landed the head coaching position. The Family Guy A native of North Augusta, S. C., Ross earned a B.A. in exercise physiology in 1984 from Purdue and is married to the former Sally Johnson, also a Purdue graduate, former swimmer and 1980 two-event Big Ten champion. Sally is a coach and administrator for Boilermaker Aquatics, West Lafayette s local USA Swimming club. 6 Season Outlook Q&A Men At Work Dan Ross Boilermakers have developed a blue-collar mentality heading into the season. With only one returning All- American on the roster, Purdue realizes it will have to rely on more than talent to race back to the top of the Big Ten and NCAA Standings. Ross is enthusiastic about his team s work ethic and believes they can repeat last year s success if the effort pays off. What do you like most about this year s team? There is a whole new level of intensity brought to the pool every single day whether it s in the water or in the weight room. I credit the freshmen for lighting everyone else s fire. They are a hungry, talented and cocky bunch of guys, but they are cocky in a good way. They re not satisfied just being on the team and riding on someone else s coattails; they want to fight for and win a spot in the lineup so they can say accomplished something special. They all know we have a long way to go after finishing sixth at last year s Big Ten Championships, so they re coming in to work hard and they re not cutting corners along the way. What s your opinion of the diving program after seeing one year of Adam Soldati s work? I tell Adam and his team how thrilled and fortunate we are to have them here at Purdue because they ve transformed us into a true swimming and diving team. There have been some years where one side was lacking more than the other, but this year I feel we re very strong in both areas. Adam was the best coach in the country to replace Wenbo (Chen) because he s a great communicator who could maintain the same work ethic Wenbo had established. He s taken us to a whole other level in a very short amount of time. I think Adam has found his niche as a collegiate coach; he gives everyone that individual attention that they deserve. He s a great source of motivation, and I am in awe of him and his talents as a coach. What are your initial expectations of this large freshman class you ve brought in? I m expecting an immediate impact from most of the guys we recruited. Some of them have already posted Olympic Trial qualifying times and others have times that would score for us at Big Tens. Sam Wilcher was one of the nation s top ten swimmers in the 200 fly, and we re bringing in Aaron Koger and Nate Taylor, who were the No. 2 and 9 breaststroke swimmers in the country. We got Aaron because we had already signed Nate; they both wanted to come here together and compete on the same team. And we got both of them because of what we were able to provide previous breaststroke swimmers like Giordan Pogioli and Tamas Bessenyei. All the freshmen are going to have an opportunity early in the season to compete right away; however, our schedule is very tough with Arizona State, Georgia and Penn State all coming here within the first couple of weeks. The freshmen will show us if they can handle the pressure especially if things don t go our way in terms of wins and losses. I give assistant coach Bill Weaver a lot of the credit for bringing in this class. He s No. 1 when it comes to the legwork involved in the recruiting process, and he s enabled me to do what I need to do and help pick up the slack along the way. We make sure we don t waste our time when it comes to recruiting; we always narrow it down to those who fit this school both academically and athletically. The facility also has played a huge role in recruiting. The bottom line is that we don t get these guys without this pool and the quality people working behind the scenes to operate it. Are there any swimmers who exceeded your expectations over the summer to the point that they might be able to sneak up on this year s opposition? Their are couple of guys who may turn some heads, but I think everyone did his job this summer and really paid the price. However, the result of that hard work is starting to pay off. We re slipping into the water a lot smoother so we re not having to play any catch up. We re ready to go. But if I had to single out any individuals it would be guys like John Schmitt, Craig Thompson and Joe Colley. I think John is going to turn heads right way; he worked harder than usual this summer. And as for Joe and Craig, they not only improved on their own, but as part of the entire junior class that has completely stepped up its game. Who do you see comprising this year s relays? Because of some of the new talent we re trying to bring in next semester, we could see completely different relays between now and January. The medley relays are wide open, but I m sure it will be Joe Colley leading off in the backstroke, either Jin-Soo Kim or Aaron Koger in the breaststroke, Jon Ranochak in the butterfly and Trey Smith in the freestyle. The possibility also exists that we ll get Chris Etherington and Daniel Walter back for next semester, and if that s the case Chris will compete in the fly spot and Daniel in the breaststroke. 6 Purdue Swimming & Diving Information Guide

7 Season Outlook Q&A I can name three/fourths of our 800 free relay and that will be Romain Maire, John Schmitt, Craig Thompson, and then it s a blank. It could be Luke Zehrung, maybe Sam Wilcher or David Hedge. I think we ll have more balance in our relays this year and our overall average finish among the five at Big Tens will be a lower number than last year, but we still need to sharpen up in the sprint relays. There is a lot of experience coming back with Trey Smith, Eddie Kenney and John Schmitt leading the way, so there s no reason why we shouldn t be faster. What events do you consider your strengths and weaknesses? Diving is our primary strength without a doubt. We have an All-American coming back in Steve LoBue, and Zach Schultz should have been named Big Ten Freshman Diver of the Year if there was such an award. Adam s bringing in three guys, Danny Cox, Kyle Mitrione and J.P. Perez, who are unbelieveable off the platform tower; they can really rip it. I don t know how, but I think we ll be better at Big Ten s this year than we were last year. Backstroke and breaststroke are our best events in the pool. We scored three guys last year in the 200 fly at Big Tens, and now we add Sam Wilcher to that group. Joe Colley, Tim Watts and Romain Maire are guys we can count on to reach the finals of both backstroke events at the Big Tens, so we re solid there, as well. We ve graduated two top-eight finalists in the individual medley the last two years (Giordan Pogioli and Louis Paul), so now it s Romain s turn to lead this group. He s an NCAA qualifier in both IM s the last few seasons. Behind him we have freshman Andre Koop who swam a 3:58 in the 400 IM earlier this year and Mark Enoch is back from his injury. We have another good IM er in Nathan Taylor, who may be able to score for us in this event next year. Freestyle is up in the air. I think we ll be OK in the 200 free with John Schmitt, Romain Maire and Craig Thompson; the sprints are a little bit better with Trey Smith, Eddie Kenney and John Mullen; however, we have to get better in the distances and quick. We have to see some improvement in that area by the time we get to the second semester. What roles do former Boilermaker All-Americans Giordan Pogioli and Louis Paul fill on your staff? Louis is one of our undergrad assistants and is great resource of information for all the guys on the team. I tried to talk him into staying for the whole season, but he has a job waiting for him in Australia in the early part of next year. When he s out on the deck talking to our guys in a corrective mode, they stop and listen. He s going to be invaluable to us for the next couple of months. Giordan leads from the water. The coaching staff and I want to get him prepared for international competitions, so he s in the same boat as all the other student-athletes and is still taking a full course load. His training and work ethic is rubbing off on all the other guys. How did you go about scheduling the Purdue Duals and inviting the teams you did? I enjoyed putting together the Purdue Invitational the last two years, but this time I wanted to do something a bit more unique and so I called just about every Division I school in the country. We started with Georgia, which is a good anchor program that would attract others, and Penn State wanted to come here because they ve never competed in our facility for a dual meet. They had only been here once prior and that was for Big Tens. SMU orginally was scheduled to compete, but they had to cancel due to homecoming obligations and the opening of their new facility. We re very lucky to have landed Utah and Louisville since both programs are on the rise. Utah was looking for a meet that weekend and Louisville was looking for an event that would upgrade their schedule, and this was it. We re going to have a five-way dual that will last for two sessions. Describe what your role will be as an assistant coach for the 2007 World University Games? I don t know what to expect and I don t care because all I can feel is a wave of excitement. I like all the guys I m working with on the men s team; Dennis Dale from Minnesota is the head coach, Bob Groseth from Northwestern is an assistant and so is Bill Wadley from Ohio State. Then, I look at the women s coaching staff and it s Jimmy Tierney from Northwestern, his sister, Dorsey, who used to coach at Indiana and is now at Auburn, and they ve got Cyndi Gallagher from UCLA and Harvey Humphries from Georgia. I m honored to be part of this team. As the new guy with very little international experience, I told Dennis that I d do anything for the team and coach any group. If I had to guess, I d say that I would be working with the breaststroke group because of Giordan Pogioli s involvement, but since their are four coaches for 21 athletes I m sure I ll have contact with each and every one of them. Giordan s been at these games twice before so he knows how to handle himself and, overall, this is a very mature group of student-athletes. Even if I m not directly working with Giordan, I ll be there to take a look at his stroke and help write his practices. Romain Maire Purdue Swimming & Diving Information Guide

8 Coaching Staff Adam Soldati Diving Coach 2nd Season Hometown: Sonoma, Calif. College: Indiana, 1997 Family: Kimiko, wife; Blake, son (1) It s quite possible that no first-year collegiate diving coach had a better debut season than the Boilermakers Adam Soldati. At the women s Big Ten Championships, Soldati s divers totaled a diving team-high 123 points as senior Carrie McCambridge walked away with Diver of the Championship honors and a share of the conference Diver of the Year award. McCambridge also won her fourth conference title, tallying a varsity record points off the platform tower. McCambridge, a three-time Big Ten Diver of the Week, was expected to excel at the conference championships, but Soldati made sure she had company in the finals. In addition to McCambridge, junior Amanda Miller placed among the top eight in all three competitions, while sophomore Lauren Hallyburton scored off both the 3-meter and platform. Most rewarding were the performances of freshman Emily Wetzel and senior Amber Kerns. Wetzel placed eighth off the tower, and Kerns, who had never scored at Big Tens prior to this past year, placed 11th off the platform with points. Soldati took McCambridge and Miller to the NCAA Championships, where the torch was passed from senior to junior. On the first day of competition, McCambridge won the fourth All-America citation of her career in 1-meter competition, while Miller placed 37th. The following day, Miller improved to 11th off the 3-meter to earn the first honorable mention All-America certificate of her career. On the third and final day she jumped to fifth place off the platform. Among divers, Purdue was the fourth-highest scoring school at the national championships with 45 points. During the summer of 2006, Soldati kept up with Miller, taking her from the U.S. Open, to the Columbus, Ohio-based International Invitational to the U.S. National Championships. At the national meet in August, Miller place third off the 1-meter and won the prelims off the 3-meter. It s hard to say if Soldati had a better year on the men s side even though he did receive men s Big Ten Diving Coach of the Year honors. During the course of last season, Soldati witnessed junior Steve LoBue erase all previous varsity records and win three Big Ten Diver of the Week awards. Senior Josh Karshen also excelled under Soldati s watch, winning a Diver of the Week honor in late October and coming within five points of winning a Big Ten title off the platform. At Big Tens, Purdue was the second-highest scoring diving team behind Indiana. In addition to LoBue and Karshen, Soldati guided sophomore Zach Schultz to the finals of the 3-meter and platform competitions and the top 16 of the 1-meter springboard. In his final season, senior J.R. Hills placed 14th off the platform with points. LoBue s stay at Big Tens was good, but his time at NCAAs was even better as he became the first Boilermaker diver since John Vogel in 1962 to attain All-America honors. LoBue one-upped Vogel by receiving All-America accolades in all three diving competitions, placing seventh off the 1-meter, sixth off the 3-meter and third off the tower. By himself, LoBue scored 41 points (the third-highest among all diving teams) and helped the Boilermakers finish 16th overall with 59 points. Soldati believes that success in the collegiate ranks is only the first step for his student-athletes. Not only does Soldati want his divers aspiring to become conference champions and All-Americans, he wants them to see the bigger picture the Olympics. And Soldati has the experience to get them there. Prior to his arrival at Purdue last summer, Soldati worked with Olympic gold-medal coach Kenny Armstrong at the U.S. Diving National Training Center outside Houston. During his tenure, Soldati worked sideby-side with several Olympians, including Laura Wilkinson, Troy and Justin Dumais, Justin Wilcox, and Kimiko Soldati. As head coach for the Woodlands Diving national team, Soldati guided three divers (J.J. Kinzbach, Harrison Jones and Jessica Livingston) to the finals of 2004 Olympic Trials and five divers (Kinzbach, Jones, Drew Livingston, Jessica Livingston and Whitney Wielgus) to Senior Nationals. Kinzbach also qualified for the U.S. National Team. Soldati finished the summer taking Kinzbach and Jones to the Junior World Championships. Following his graduation from Indiana University in 1997, Soldati founded Indiana Diving and Youth Development while serving as the Hoosiers assistant coach and diving events director. Both programs succeeded at the highest levels with his involvement. From June 1997 to January 2000, Soldati s club program advanced six athletes to the U.S. Senior National Diving Championships, plus four finalists and eight athletes to the U.S. Junior National Championships and earned one national championship. At the same time, he was helping his Hoosiers win three-consecutive national diving titles from 1998 to Soldati, 31, is married to Kimiko Hirai Soldati, who was a member of 2004 U.S. Olympic Diving Team. 9 Coaching Staff Bill Weaver Asst. Swim Coach 4th Season Hometown: Columbus, Ind. College: Ohio State, 1995 Family: Deborah, wife; Lain (7), Kal (2), sons Former All-American swimmer Bill Weaver is in his fourth season as an assistant coach for the Boilermaker men s swimming team. Purdue has steadily progressed under Weaver s watch over his first three years on the job. The Boilermakers reached new heights last season with a 16th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, qualifying five individuals who comprised three relays (200 freestyle, 200 and 400 medley). The 200 medley of Joe Colley, Chris Etherington, Giordan Pogioli and Trey Smith was the program s first relay since 1998 to earn honorable mention All-America citations. Additionally, junior Romain Maire qualified for his thrid NCAA meet in as many years and finished 18th in the 200 backstroke. At Big Tens, Weaver and head coach Dan Ross guided nine different individuals into the top 16 of eight separate events. Etherington, a newcomer who received Big Ten Swimmer of the Week accolades following his first meet, scored in three races at the conference meet while Pogioli and Colley scored in two. Just as impressive was the performance of walk-on Luke Zehrung, who clinched the 16th and final scoring position of the 100 butterfly. In three full seasons at Purdue, Weaver has coached a pair of a Big Ten Champions and taken six individuals to the NCAA Championships. Seven of his Boilermakers also have succeeded in long-course meters in qualifying for the U.S. National Championships. The varsity record and top-five performance lists have changed dramatically since Weaver s arrival. Louis Paul set four new varsity marks in his final season of in the 100 and 200 free, 200 back and 200 IM). Pogioli graduated last season as the program s top swimmer in the 100 and 200 breaststroke, and at last year s Big Tens, Etherington and Jon Ranochak posted the team s two fastest times in 100 fly. Etherington and Pogioli also were part of the 400 medley relay at Big Tens (alongside Joe Colley and Trey Smith) that set a varsity record of 3: Weaver received one All-America honor and seven honorable mention All-America citations during his days competing for Ohio State, where he also won three Big Ten Conference championship titles. After qualifying for the U.S. National Team, Weaver claimed silver medals at the 1995 U.S. National Swimming Championships, U.S. Open and World University Games. In 1996, Weaver was a finalist at the U.S. Swimming Olympic Trials. Prior to joining Ross staff, Weaver spent three productive seasons as an assistant swimming coach for the University of Pittsburgh. During his tenure with the Panthers, the men s team collected three consecutive Big East championships. Weaver arrived at Pittsburgh from San Diego, Calif., where he spent a year coaching the North Coast Aquatics club team. Prior to his stint with North Coast Aquatics, Weaver served as head coach for the St. Charles Swim Team in Illinois. In his coaching career, Weaver has assisted in the development and training of every level of swimmer, from the beginner to the Olympic Trials finalist. A 1995 graduate of Ohio State, Weaver and his wife, Deborah, are parents of sons, Lain (7) and Kal (2). Kimiko Soldati Volunteer Assistant Diving Coach 2nd Season Hometown: Longmont, Colo. College: Indiana, 1997 Family: Adam, husband; Blake, son (1) Kimiko Hirai Soldati is in her second year as the volunteer assistant diving coach at Purdue, joining her husband, Adam, on the deck of the Boilermaker Aquatic Center. A 2004 member of the U.S. Olympic diving team, Soldati s list of accomplishments in athletics and academics is nearly endless. Her most recent accolades include 3-meter championships at the 2004 U.S. National and Olympic Trial meets and a 10-meter synchro title with Laura Wilkinson at the 2004 American Cup. Soldati began her collegiate career at Colorado State but transferred to Indiana for the start of the season. After one year of redshirting, Soldati qualified for her first NCAA Championship and was victorious in 1-meter competition. For her efforts, she was selected as IU s 1996 Female Athlete of the Year. Not only was Soldati rewarded by IU for her athletic accomplishments, but her academic endeavors as well. Soldati earned a degree in kinesiology from IU in 1997, sporting a perfect 4.0 grade-point average, and was chosen as her school s valedictorian. In December of 2001, Soldati received her masters degree in athletic administration/sports management again maintaining a solid 4.0. A former GTE Academic All-American, Soldati twice received the Jack D. Tichenor Award (in 1996 and 1997), which is presented to those students who achieve the highest degree of academic excellence. Soldati earned her spot on the USA national team right out of college in 1998, and became the first female in U.S. Diving history to qualify for finals in all five events at the National Championships. In the fall of 2000, Soldati made the move to The Woodlands, Texas, with her husband, to train with Olympic coach Kenny Armstrong. Soldati and Armstrong proved to be a winning combination. At the 2001 Spring National Diving Championships, Soldati won the 1-meter title and earned silver medals off the 3-meter and 10-meter tower. These performances qualified her for her first major international competitions, the World Championships and Goodwill Games. In September of 2001, Soldati shocked the world by winning a bronze medal for the United States on 3-meter springboard at the Goodwill Games after the media had speculated that women s springboard was the least likely event to earn a medal for the United States. Ironically, it ended up being the sole medal the U.S. was able to garner. In 2002 Soldati went to the World Cup and won a silver medal in the 10 meter platform. She also made the finals in three other events, finishing among the top five of all three. Later that summer at the national championships, Soldati won her first National title on 3-meter springboard. A two time U.S. Diver of the Year in 2001 and 2002, Soldati again qualified for the World Cup with partner Laura Wilkinson on 10-meter synchronized and brought home a spot for the Olympic Games. She also made the World Cup in 3-meter and 3-meter synchronized with Erin Quinn. In addition to helping the Boilermaker divers, Soldati serves as a motivational speaker for different groups and causes. Last fall, Soldati gave the keynote address at the Academy for Eating Disorders national convention in Indianapolis. And this autumn, Soldati again will be part of the Revolve Tour, which is a Christian faith-based concert series and program designed specifically for teenage girls. 44 Purdue University Boasting 384,000 living alumni, Purdue University graduates have been to the moon, to the highest levels of business and government, and to Sweden to receive the Nobel Prize. The Indiana link in a nationwide chain of 68 land-grant colleges and universities, Purdue owes its origin to the Morrill Act signed by Abraham Lincoln in 1862 to promote establishment of schools to teach agriculture and the mechanic arts. An act of generosity by Lafayette businessman John Purdue secured the college for Lafayette. Purdue pledged money and land for the school. In return, the institution was named for him, and he remained a trustee until his death in Classes began in 1874 with a total of 39 students and six faculty members. Since then, enrollment has grown to more than 69,000 on five campuses and a faculty and staff totaling nearly 18,400. A record 39,228 students are enrolled at Purdue s main campus in West Lafayette, Ind. Since its inception in 1869, Purdue has attained widespread fame for the quality of learning, research and engagement in a number of fields. Building upon historical strengths in engineering and agriculture, the West Lafayette campus currently offers 7,400 courses in more than 500 undergraduate majors and specializations in the schools/ colleges of Agriculture; Consumer and Family Sciences; Education; Engineering; Liberal Arts; Management; Pharmacy, Nursing, and Health Sciences; Science; Technology; and Veterinary Medicine. 50 A.D. Morgan J. Burke Now in his 14th year as director of intercollegiate athletics, Morgan Burke embodies the Boilermaker spirit that drew him back to his alma mater. During his tenure, the women s basketball team captured the national championship, the football team embarked on a run of eight bowl games in eight years and the men s basketball team achieved an unprecedented string of back-to-back-to-back Big Ten Conference championships. Burke has been called the athletics director who came down from the grandstands because he was an avid fan and member of the John Purdue Club long before he was appointed to lead Intercollegiate Athletics in No one wants to see the Boilermakers prevail in competition more than Burke, and few expend more energy in cheering them on to victory. But Burke views the academic accomplishments and athletic exploits as far greater than the sum of their parts. We strive to make the student-athlete experience as enriching and meaningful as possible, says Burke, who was captain of the Boilermaker swim team his senior year. These young men and women come to us with great abilities and potential, and we do all we can as coaches and administrators to help them develop fully as leaders and citizens who will make the world a better place than they found it. In Burke s time at the helm of Purdue Intercollegiate Athletics, performances on and off the field reflect the high expectations that heralded his hiring. In 1992, the Purdue Board of Trustees voted unanimously to declare the intention to establish a nationally prominent athletic organization that is excellent in all respects. That meant making up ground on the other schools in the Big Ten and achieving in the classroom at the level of the general student body. It meant winning and playing by the rules. It meant getting to more bowl games in football, more NCAA Tournament basketball games and other postseason contests, and it meant building new facilities and improving the others to attract the top coaching and student-athlete talent to West Lafayette. A 1973 industrial management graduate, Burke was a member of Phi Beta Kappa scholastic honorary. After graduation, he continued at Purdue and earned a master s degree in industrial relations in In 1980, he graduated with a law degree from John Marshall Law School in Chicago. He pursued a successful career with Inland Steel Co. after law school, moving through 13 positions in an 18-year span. He was vice president when he departed to become athletics director. When Burke succeeded George King as AD on Jan. 1, 1993, Purdue had a solid reputation for playing hard and playing by the rules. Burke pledged to build on the foundation already in place. Working with coaches and staff, aggressive goals were set. On the athletics side, Burke s expectation was to improve the position of Purdue teams in the Big Ten and nationally. During his tenure, squads have made significant strides by both measures. In , 13 teams placed in the upper half of the Big Ten, a record number in Burke s time at Purdue. That figure compares with six squads in the upper half of the conference standings in On the national scene, the Boilermakers have gone from 81st in to 35th in among NCAA Division I programs. Similar excellence was expected in the classroom: To match or surpass the overall grade-point average of the general student body. That goal has been achieved each of the last 18 semesters. Following the 2006 spring semester, the cumulative GPA for all current Purdue student-athletes was a record In addition, the four-year average graduation rate has risen to 70 percent. More specifically, Burke articulated an expectation for all areas of Intercollegiate Athletics to make measurable improvement. Because Intercollegiate Athletics writes a check to the University for scholarships, financial resources had to be expanded greatly to support all sports. Burke challenged Purdue alumni and fans to get on board to propel Boilermaker athletics to greatness. He set a goal of doubling the size of the 4,350-member John Purdue Club as well as doubling the $2.5 million raised annually to support student-athletes. Both goals have been achieved, with JPC memberships now at 9,000 and annual dollars raised to support scholarships and academic support services in excess of $7 million. Burke and his staff have set a high standard for the future. As a rallying point on the road to preeminence, administrators coined the term 25/75 Club to articulate a vision of an intercollegiate athletics organization that achieves an average finish in the top 25 across all sports and graduates 75 percent of student-athletes. Precious few institutions achieve this lofty status. They are Duke, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Penn State and Stanford. Regular upgrades of competition and practice venues are vital in attracting and retaining topstudent athlete and coaching talent, and that s why Burke and his staff have identified and addressed a number of facility priorities since the start of the new millennium. In spring 2001, work started on the $70 million dollar renovation of Ross-Ade Stadium. The remade Ross-Ade boasts vastly expanded concessions and restrooms along a wider concourse, new concrete throughout, wider aisles and individual seats, and increased seating for fans in wheelchairs. The crown of this project is the West Pavilion, which houses suites, indoor and outdoor club seats, two stadium clubs, facilities for the working press and gameday staff, and offices for the John Purdue Club and marketing staff. The Boilermaker Aquatic Center opened its doors to the delight of swimmers and divers in the fall of 2001 and since then has played host to several championship events including the Big Ten Championships in 2003 and 2004, the 2005 NCAA Women s Championships and the 2002 and 2005 NCAA Diving Zones. In December of 2006, the Boilermaker Aquatic Center will welcome the world s best swimmers for the U.S. Open. Purdue s golf complex has undergone several facelifts over the past decade. Pete Dye s redesign of the north course now known as the Kampen Course instantly placed Purdue s golf facilities on the national map, as the Boilermakers played host to the 2003 NCAA Women s Championships. The newest addition to the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex is the Tom Spurgeon indoor training center, which was dedicated in October of This season, Boilermaker supporters will get a look at a new facility and an upgrade of another longtime edifice. The Dennis J. and Mary Lou Schwartz Tennis Center, which was officially dedicated in October of 2005, will be ready to open its doors this winter just in time to play host to the 2007 Big Ten men s tennis championships. Purdue s volleyball program, which advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament in 2005, received several major upgrades to its court within the Intercollegiate Athletic Facility. The volleyball court was revamped over the summer of 2006 and named after Boilermaker supporters Ron and Kay Belin. Finally, the Mollenkopf Athletic Center got a makeover during the spring and summer of The 16-year-old AstroTurf was replaced with state-of-theart FieldTurf, while the walls of the indoor practice facility were repainted and adorned with banners that pay tribute to Purdue s rich football tradition. Another goal of Burke s was to involve former student-athletes in the life of the department, to counsel and question, and provide ideas to keep the organization sharp. In 1993, he established an advisory council made up of 24 studentathlete alumni. The group meets annually to hear reports and make suggestions to Burke and senior administrators. In 2003, former student-athletes found a new home in Intercollegiate Athletics with the founding of the Varsity P Club. A subset of the John Purdue Club, the Varsity P Club hosts the annual Legends Weekend each fall, welcoming back Boilermaker athletes for golf, good times and the Ross-Ade Stadium roar. Burke, 54, is married to the former Catherine J. (Kate) Mullane, a Purdue alumna and pharmacist. They have three children: Joyce, Morgan Jr. and Patrick. Joyce is a Purdue alumna working as a materials engineer; she and her husband, Ryan, reside in Austin, Texas. Morgan Jr., a Purdue graduate, is a landscape architect and works with a firm in San Francisco. Patrick is attending Purdue in the College of Engineering. 50 Purdue Swimming & Diving Information Guide
