1 Club Visitation Cascade Swim Club Submitted by: Iain McDonald Club Overview The Cascade Swim Club operates out of the south end of Calgary. They are a well established club with a long history of producing great age group swimmers that include Mark Tewksbury, Curtis Myden and Chris Renaud. Dave Johnson has been the Head Coach of the club since September Currently Cascade has approximately 450 total swimmers with approximately 250 of those being competitive swimmers. Over the last four years the club have consistently improved to the point where they won the overall team championship at the 2009 Canadian Age Group Championship. Coach Johnson credits the club success to the unique structure and approach they have taken to the development of the team over the last four years. Team Structure Cascade is structured into six distinct programs. The Talisman National Program, the Development Program and the 10&under Programare the three programs that form the competitive side of the club. The learn-to-swim portion of the club consists of the Olympic Way and Junior Olympic Way Program along with the Swim School sessional program. The sixth component of the club is the non-competitive groups which are the Swim Fit groups, the triathlon group and the masters group. Group Descriptions Talisman National Groups are for swimmers that are developing the competencies to train, compete and win at the National and International level. There are three groups within this program: Senior (primarily Sr. National Qualifiers, swimmers), Performance 1 (primarily Western Canadian qualifiers with some Sr. National qualifiers, swimmers) and Performance 2 (primarily Alberta Provincial Qualifiers or better, this group is further subdivided into 12&under and 13&over, swimmers). After the season begins, swimmers are placed into smaller cohesive sub-groups with a specific coach; however all Talisman centre swimmers and coaches may work together at various points in the season. This fluid programming will demand that all swimmers develop the skill of being coachable. Programs will be implemented that are commensurate with training requirements, competency levels, event requirements and the swimmers individual needs and goals. Development Groups are generally focused on qualifying for and competing at the regional and Provincial levels, with a goal of moving swimmers through to the age group national level. These groups have a base number of workouts with access to additional training with the Talisman groups as individually required. Swimmers in these groups will still spend a great deal of training time working on developing their strokes and skills; at the same time increasing fitness and endurance. Dry-land conditioning will also 1 Club Visitation Cascade Swim Club Iain McDonald
2 be a key element of these groups. There are two separate groups, Development 1 (11 to 16 year olds), Development 2 (11-14 year olds). The 10 & Under Groups are generally focused on developing excellent technical skills, improving aerobic fitness and developing body awareness and coordination. These swimmers will have a program designed to enhance their chance of a successful and lengthy swimming career. Competitions will be on the Regional and Provincial levels; however emphasis from the coaches will be on skill acquisition and solid fitness as much as meet performance. The Olympic Way and Junior Olympic Way are for young 10 & Under swimmers to learn how to swim all four strokes, and all the basics of competitive swimming. Swimmers learn their skills in a fun team environment with very little emphasis placed on time. The Cascade Swim School offers programs for swimmers that are either a bit too young or not quite physically ready for the JOW or OW programs. The Swim School 1 program targets 3 & 4 year-old swimmers while the Swim School 2 program is designed for year-old swimmers. Non-competitive program includes SwimFit, Triathletes & Masters. The SwimFit is split into two groups. SwimFit 2 is for all 11-years and older former competitive swimmers looking for a place to train and stay fit. They must be able to train with the Development 1 level. SwimFit 1 is a once a week program for swimmers with nocompetitive experience 11 years and older. Triathletes (16 & over), Masters (18&over) & Adult Performance(AM) swimmers have a three times a-week opportunity to train alongside the senior performance part of the program mornings at the Talisman Centre; Traithletes, Masters & Adult Performance (PM) is once a week on Fridays alongside the Swim School 1 program giving parents an opportunity to be in the water when their kids are. The basic progression of a swimmer would be up through the Swim School, Olympic Way and 10 & under programs. At age eleven the swimmers then enter either the Talisman National Group Program or the Development Program based on their ability and commitment level. There is also some movement between these two groups. The non-competitive programs are not part of the core stucture of the program but are in place as a means of generating additional revenue for the overall operation of the club. 2 Club Visitation Cascade Swim Club Iain McDonald

In addition to the Head Coach there are two other full-time senior staff members (Wendy Johnson, Ildi Deliu) who work with the Talisman National Groups. The Club Manager (Jason Pratt) also offers additional coaching support at to the Talisman National Groups. The Talisman National Groups also have access to an on deck massage therapist during afternoon sessions. This is a pay per use service that is billed to the swimmers. The massage therapists also travels to major competitions with the team. The Development Program and the 10&under Program each have their own head coach and are supported by a number of assistant coaches. Assistant coaches are added to the staff as required by the number of registered swimmers. There are two unique staff positions at Cascade, the first being the position of Club Manager. This position is hired by the Director of Swimming and reports directly to the director of swimming. The fundamental function of this position is to allow the coaching staff to completely focus on the technical delivery of the program. This individual is responsible for the overall business operation of the club including all administrative functions. Currently the Club Manager is assisted by two part-time office employees, a book-keeper and a receptionist. In the next year these two positions will be combined into one role. Seventy-five to eighty percent of the clubs revenues are generated from member fees. The budgeting process ensures that all fixed costs (pool rental, salaries etc...) are covered by the member fees. All variable costs and extra funds requested by the coaching staff are raised from external sources. One of the key responsibilities of the Club Manager is to raise this external revenue. The following is a partial list of responsibilities of the club manager: Arrange all pool bookings, contracts and maintain relationships with facilities 3 Club Visitation Cascade Swim Club Iain McDonald
4 Make all travel arrangements Complete and submit all grant applications Organize and run all external fundraising activities Provide coaching support to the Talisman National groups 3 to 4 days per week Act as a fill in coach when other coaches are travelling on team business Manages and coordinates the OW, JOW and Swim School programs The second unique position is what Cascade calls a Physical Literacy Coach (PLC). This individual develops and implements the dryland programs for the Talisman National Groups. The program focuses on agility, core strength, coordination and flexibility. The PLC meets with the Head Coach bi-weekly to review and develop the program. All swimmers in the group have some form of dryland on a daily basis, Monday through Thursday. In addition the 10&under program does a dryland program once a week at the Talisman Centre and twice weekly at their satellite pool. 5 Development Groups The Development Groups train primarily out of the satellite pools but some swimmers will have access to additional training at the Talisman Centre. Development 1 has 5 weekly scheduled workouts and Development 2 has 4 weekly scheduled workouts. 10 & Under Groups The 10 & under groups train 3 to 4 times each week and operate out of one satellite pool as well as the Talisman Centre. All 10 & under groups train together and work with the PLC on Saturday mornings at the Talisman Centre. OW/JOW/Swim School These programs operate out of three satellite pools. OW swims up to three times per week. JOW and Swim School 2 swims twice per week and Swim School 1 swims once per week. Non-Competitive Programs These programs train primarily at the Talisman Centre at non-traditional training times (i.e. 8-9pm etc...) Facilities Cascades main facility is the Talisman Centre which is located just south of downtown Calgary. A stated objective of this facility is to service Calgary s High Performance athletes. The facility is immaculately maintained and contains all of the latest training equipment needed to train high performance athletes. The club also has access to three satellite pools in various bedroom communities. These pools help attract new swimmers into the program. Cascades 5-year Plans In the fall of 2006 Dave Johnson developed a five year plan to put all the necessary components in place that would help transform the Cascade Swim Club into the best age group club in Canada. After just four years they have arguably achieved that objective by winning the 2009 Canadian Age Group Championship. Over the next five years the club plans on furthering the development of their age group program into best in the world. In addition they are striving to develop a professional senior elite group of athletes who have all the necessary resources to compete on the world stage. 5 Club Visitation Cascade Swim Club Iain McDonald
