Dear Staff Member Holiness unto the Lord We trust that this booklet of staff guidelines will help you as you prepare to work at Camp this summer. When you volunteer to serve at Camp you agree to abide by these guidelines. These standards are published so that all staff members will be in unity, and so that we can collectively and personally strive to serve according to Camp s motto Holiness unto the Lord. Let us aim to please the Lord as we keep these guidelines, remembering that [we] serve the Lord Christ. It should be our goal to work conscientiously in every task that we do, finishing our jobs completely. Be alert when on duty, cheerful and friendly. Cell phones should not be in use while on the job. Come to work and to meetings on time. The attitude in which you live should set an example for guests and campers. Give preference to the guests at meal time, allowing them to enter the dining room and be seated first. Pass the food to them first, also. Please do not ask for food that is not on the menu. Do not bring any form of media (electronics, books, or magazines) to Camp that would distract or hinder you (or anyone else) from seeking the Lord. Camp provides a unique opportunity to escape from some of the entertainments that are so easily accessible back at home and to devote time to a wholehearted lifestyle of seeking the Lord and serving Him. We have endeavored to keep Camp clear of these distractions, and it is your responsibility to continue to uphold this standard. If you have any problems or suggestions while serving at Camp, please feel free to speak to your department head or the staff coordinator on hand. Thank you for taking the time to review this booklet in your preparation for this summer. There is great reward and much joy in serving our King. 2
MEETINGS AT CAMP: The staff session begins on Saturday at noon and lasts two full weeks. If you cannot arrive before noon on the first Saturday, or stay until your morning duties are completed on your last Saturday, please make that known as soon as possible. You must sign in and sign out at the Camp office at the beginning and end of each period that you serve. Upon arrival, please go directly to the Camp office, where you will be given information about getting yourself settled and will be placed in contact with your department head. Your department head will then see to it that you know your schedule and responsibilities. If this is your first time on staff, you will receive a tour of the Camp grounds. As a reminder to all staff the kitchen, the Village, Cottage, and Nonantum are off limits unless you are assigned to work in those areas. In addition, the barn, the garage at Pilgrim s Rest, and the garbage areas outside of the kitchen are deemed hazardous areas by the NYS Department of Health (NYSDOH), and are off limits unless you are assigned to go to those sites. The ball field is primarily for camper use; therefore, permission to go to the ball field should be obtained by your department head from the head counselor. 3 Come to meeting early (15 minutes) and prepare your heart to meet the Lord. Turn off your cell phone. Men and boys sit in the front row (next to the piano and next to the minister). Waitresses sit behind them on the piano side. Bring your Bible and assigned reading material. Take notes. Be open to the Lord s leading to testify, perhaps on your reading. Spend time after meeting seeking God, receiving His help, strength, and blessing for body, soul, and spirit. Dress decently. Do not bring water bottles into the meeting house. We make a special effort on Friday evenings and on Sundays to dress as nicely as possible. Tuesday and Thursday prayer time is from 4:15 PM to 4:45 PM. Staff members should attend these times for at least 15 minutes longer if possible. You are encouraged to pray aloud. Staff members are needed to participate in the Sunday morning choir. Location and time will be announced in the staff meeting. THE LODGE: It is our sanctuary respect it. You may play/practice instruments between 4:00 PM and 7:00 PM (except during a prayer meeting). We ask that trumpet practice be in the library. Organ and piano are off limits all the time. Piano practice is available in the library. Do not congregate outside the Lodge or Prayer Room before, during, or after meetings (including Sunday afternoons). This includes the lawn area between the Lodge and Pilgrims Rest. 4
LIVING QUARTERS: Keep clean and neat. Don t leave food around. Endeavor to be quiet before 8:00 AM and after meetings. Lights out at 11:00 PM. No candles or fires. No guests at any time. Approved snacks may be obtained through the head cook before evening meeting. Please leave dishes, silverware, trays, and decanters at the Palace. Clean thoroughly the day before you are scheduled to leave. THE BEACH: Proper covering to and from beach. Lifeguards are in charge on the beach. Obey them. N No horsing around no physical contact of any kind. N No diving. N Don t swim alone. N Stay within swim lines (NYSDOH). Absolutely no diving or swimming off Watch Rock or the boathouse (NYSDOH). Leave beach by 7:30 PM to be ready for meeting. No swimming or any sporting activities on Sunday. THE BOATHOUSE: Tickets are given to staff members each week and are good for purchasing store items. 10% discount on books and stationery for all staff members. Closed on Sunday. Off limits after evening meetings. 5 Rowboats and canoes are available to staff on standby basis. N You are allowed to take an immediate family member with you. N Keep away from beach and children in boats. N No swimming off boats or canoes. N Lifeguards have key to oar locker. Door should be closed and locked after retrieving/returning oars. Free ride on tour boat (once per period) standby basis only. N See storekeeper for ticket. N Wednesdays and Saturdays are scheduled for tour boat. N Staff is not to go on Village or Cottage tour rides. THE LAUNDRY: Laundry services are provided for those staff members staying longer than two weeks. Machines are available for staff members who wish to do their own laundry. Laundry or ironing can be done any day between 8:00 AM and 8:00 PM, except Sunday. TIME OFF: Time off is intended to be a recuperation period; use it wisely for a time of physical rest. You are expected to attend meetings for spiritual refreshment. We discourage all staff members from going off grounds. If a senior staff member finds it necessary to go off grounds, the department head must be advised. Department head is responsible for alerting the office 6
as to who is going off grounds, when, and their expected return. Junior staff (under 20 years of age) are not allowed off Camp grounds without special permission. VEHICLES: When driving on the grounds, drive slowly, 5-10 MPH. All cars should be parked in the camp parking lot. If it is necessary to have more than two vehicles in the Village, they are to be parked away from children s play/activity areas. Be sure they do not obstruct traffic flow for either camp or emergency vehicles. Only authorized drivers may drive camp vehicles, even on the grounds, and they must be at least 21 years of age. A copy of their driver s license must be on file in the Camp office. Junior staff may not bring vehicles to camp without permission. FIRE SAFETY: Two fire drills each period are required one in the Palace and one in the campers sleeping quarters. During orientation, your department head will explain your responsibilities in case of a fire. In the event of a fire, the objective is to get everyone to the parking lot via the quickest, safest, and easiest route. DRESS CODE LADIES FINE TUNING... For those new to Pilgrim Camp (and to remind former workers), we wish to call attention to the camp staff guidelines regarding make-up and ear jewelry: We kindly ask that all staffers refrain from wearing earrings, ear studs, make-up, tinted lip gloss, eye enhancers, nail polish, and related cosmetics. Ladies, please also remember that jeans, slacks, modest shorts, culottes, and skorts are reserved for sporting activities only. It is not our intention to make a statement on these possibly controversial topics. In our endeavor to be watchful regarding a standard of holiness, we realize we are addressing an increasing number of staff members with diverse backgrounds and opinions. Instead of attempting to define modesty, we are simply directing the standard to one easy level by asking that all staff members please abide by these guidelines during their duties and free time as well. Thank you. PLEASE DO NOT BRING: midriffs, halters, sundresses, or sleeveless attire; sunback, plunge, or low necklines; short-shorts, mini skirts or dresses, or any abbreviated attire (skirts and dresses should be at least knee-length); stretch blouses, tops, pants, or shorts; tight-fitting or skin-tight apparel of any kind; two-piece swim suits or leotard swim suits WE ASK YOUR FULL COOPERATION IN HELPING MAINTAIN A DRESS CODE THAT IS IN ACCORD WITH PILGRIM CAMP S MOTTO: HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD 7 8

Likewise, tank tops are worn only at the beach and not for kitchen or grounds duty. We also ask all staffers not to wear earrings or ear studs. It is not our intention to make a statement on possibly controversial dress and style topics. Thank you. Staff members are requested to please bring enough clothes for TWO WEEKS, to minimize laundry facility use.
