3 Parent Information Welcome to Five Season's Sharks Swim Team! The goal of Five Season's Sharks Swim Team is to teach and motivate our swimmers in a positive and nurturing environment. We strive for improvement and, most importantly, we hope all participants have FUN while doing so! Our objectives are to: Registration Develop and improve strokes, starts, and turns Experience competition Encourage team spirit Build confidence and self esteem Increase strength and endurance Make new friends and memories Have FUN! A registration form must be completed before swimmers can start practicing with the team. All new swimmers must be approved by a member of the coaching staff. Swimmers must be able to swim the length of the pool once on their front and once on their back. Swimmers ages 8 and under can stop no more than two times each lap. For safety reasons, a coach will be in the water with the swimmer during their swim test. Clinics and private lessons should be scheduled before the start of the season for swimmers who need pre-season preparation. Please note that clinics or lessons prior to the start of the season do not guarantee team membership. How many events will my child participate in? Depending on the size of each age group, the number of events your child can participate in will vary. This is because we have limits on the number of competition lanes available for each event. In the case that an age group is very small, each child will swim an optimal number of events (up to three individual events and two relays.) In the case that an age group is very large, each child will swim a minimal number of events (at least one individual event or one relay.) Exhibition (non-scoring heats) will also be utilized as available to create more competition lanes. This allows all swimmers, no matter their age group size, to be guaranteed at least one event per meet. It is important to keep in mind that the coaching staff will always do their best to optimize a swimmer's meet participation. 3

4 How do I register? Simply fill out the registration forms, on page 15 and 17, in the back of this packet and submit it to the Five Seasons front desk. When is registration due? The deadline for registration is Friday, June 2, Registrations received after this date will only be accepted if space is available within the requested age group(s). What is the Refund Policy? 100% to first-time swimmers prior to registration deadline (6/2/17). What are the fees? $120 for the 1st swimmer, $90 for the 2nd swimmer, $35 for the third swimmer, and $10 for each additional swimmer per family. Registration requires that the family have an active membership to Five Seasons Sports Club. The swim team fees cover coaches' salaries, practice five days a week (Monday thru Friday) for 2+ months, a latex swim cap, end of season awards, and a team T-shirt for the swimmer. Additional spirit-wear and personalized silicone caps are available for purchase. Invitational and championship entry fees will be charged if swimmer competes. Expectations Our meets are run by parents and the more help we have, the smoother they run. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities available. Swim meets can be long and the time passes much more quickly when you are working! In addition, it s a great way to meet other parents and get to know the swimmers! Following are expectations: All swimmers will swim in a minimum of two meets. This is a league requirement for championships and there are no exceptions, even for rain outs. In order to swim an event at championships, a swimmer must have completed the event legally in a meet during the regular season. There are also no exceptions to this rule. All parents are REQUIRED TO WORK AT 3 MEETS. ***A fee of $50 will be charged for each meet not worked, but we would rather have your help than your money!*** Please don t try to talk with the coaches during swim team practices. It can be very distracting and the swimmers deserve the coach s undivided attention. Please contact the coaches via phone, , or in person after all practices are completed. Please your child's coach about any important information. Hard copies are best for future reference of vacation dates, camp dates, etc. Participation in the Rolling Hills Invitational, Mason Invitational, and/or the Beckett Ridge Invitational is strongly encouraged. Coaches will inform the swimmers during the season which of these we will be attending. 4

5 Regular attendance and punctuality at practices is expected. Your child will benefit greatly from attending as many practices as he or she can. In addition, we need to be able to see what your child can do to select the events for them to swim in meets. Swimmers must have practiced as much as possible with Five Seasons in the week before a meet to swim at the meet unless otherwise cleared by the coaching staff. All parents and swimmers will treat the coaches with respect, especially when they disagree with the coach. Parents will be enthusiastic and offer encouragement to swimmers at meets. Parents will bring any comments or concerns regarding coaching directly to the president of the swim team board. Their telephone number and are listed in the volunteer parent board section of this handbook. Feel free to direct any compliments directly to the coaching staff. In compliance with the Tri-County Swim League Sportsmanship Policy, any ridicule, derogatory remarks, taunting, bullying, and/or physical violence by a swimmer or parent toward another swimmer or parent will result in banishment from pool deck and/or swim meets and practices for a period of time to be determined by the Board. There will be no exceptions to this policy as we must ensure a safe environment for our all swimmers and families. Swim Team Bathing Suits SWIMVILLE USA is the official supplier of our swim team bathing suits. Our team suit fitting is scheduled for Saturday, April 29th from 2:00-3:00 PM at Five Seasons. Suits must be purchased directly from SWIMVILLE USA, and you are not required to attend the team fitting. If you are unable to make the team swim suit fitting, you can call Swimville directly at the number below to order your suit. Simply state you are ordering a suit for Five Seasons Cincinnati. You can also go directly to the store to be fitted. If they have your size in stock, you can walk out of the store with your suit that day! **This year the Five Seasons logo will be directly on the suit. Therefore, once you order your suit, you will not be able to return it if the size is incorrect. Please make sure your size is accurate prior to ordering your suit. 6 Communication Five Seasons Sharks In order that parents, swimmers and coaches have the latest information, the following communication vehicles are used: Online Volunteer Signup Forms Once you are on the Five Seasons Swim team, you will be put on our distribution list. You will receive s with links to: Signup swimmers for each swim meet Volunteer for all swim meets Signup for Invitationals Signup for Championships YOU MUST SIGNUP YOUR CHILD TO SWIM BY THE FRIDAY BEFORE EACH SWIM MEET. The online signup forms for a meet will be deleted the Friday before each meet. NO changes will be made to the lineup after this time. Websites: The swim team website is located at Please bookmark this on your computer, as we will frequently communicate important information and alerts, sign-ups, schedule changes, etc. via the team website. The league website is This website includes directions to all league pools, information concerning the Invitationals and Championships. A private team site will be setup up for photographs. This site will be sent to you via once the season starts. Contacting the Coaches Please do not interrupt the coaches during practice times. 7 Championships Five Seasons Sharks Championships are held at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Deck space at the meet is limited so only the swimmers, coaches, and registered volunteers are allowed on the pool deck. Spectators are seated in the balcony area. During the 8 & under session of the meet we will have parent volunteers on deck to manage the swimmers. Sessions are divided as follows: 13 & up Friday, July 28 morning Friday, July 28 afternoon 9-10 Saturday, July 29 morning 8 & under Saturday, July 29 afternoon High point awards are awarded to each age group in divisions I & II. A spirit trophy is awarded for each session to one team. Teams can earn spirit points by dressing up, sporting team colors, cheering, and even by tweeting in support of their team during the meet. Tri-County Swim League will post frequent updates and contests to their twitter and spectators are encouraged to tweet at the league s twitter account as well. Points are awarded for both the spirit on deck and in the spectator stands. Pysch sheets and results are posted live to the Meet Mobile app, and heat sheets are also available for purchase via Meet Mobile. Paper copies of the heat sheets will also be available for purchase at the pool. Teams are assigned to either Division I or II based on the overall results of last year s championship meet (Five Seasons is a Division II team for the 2017 Swim Season). Divisions will also be scored separately to determine standings in each division. Complete meet information, as well as results, will be posted on 7

9 Head Coach: Don Rielag Five Seasons Sharks 2017 Coaching Staff Don is a math teacher and head swim team coach at CHCA. He has been a teacher for 16 years and lives in Mason with his wife and two children. Don has extensive experience in swimming as a coach and a competitor. He was Co-captain of the LaSalle HS swim team then went on to be a 4 year letter and senior swim captain at Xavier University. Don s coaching experience started in 2002 at Winton Woods HS, then Walnut Hills HS, Taylor HS and presently at CHCA. Don also has coached summer swim teams at Oak Hills Swim & Racquet Club and Shady Lane Swim Club. His philosophy is - Athletes should give 100% effort, be great teammates and practice good sportsmanship. Win or lose, we need to be the team that people love to compete against! Go Sharks! drielag@gmail.com Cell: First Assistant: Oksana Schornak Oksana is entering her sophomore year at Northern Kentucky University where she is majoring in pre-art education and photography. She is a graduate of Sycamore High School. Oksana swam competitively for the Blue Ash Dolphins then shifted her athletic skills to volleyball for Sycamore High School and year round national teams. Oksana has worked at Five Season for 4 years as a lifeguard and swim instructor, where she taught hundreds of private and group lesson. In her free time Oksana loves dog sitting, photography and working out. Her favorite animal is a beluga whale. Oksana is thrilled to be joining the Sharks coaching staff, lifeguarding and teaching swim lessons this summer at Five Seasons. Assistant Coach: Stephanie Hong Stephanie is entering her senior year at Sycamore High School where she is currently a part of the varsity swim team. She swam competitively for ten years in both Indiana and Ohio for numerous teams, including Bloomington Swim Club, Sycamore Flying Fish, Cincinnati Marlins, Blue Ash YMCA and Five Seasons Sharks. Stephanie s favorite events are sprint freestyle and backstroke, the later of which placed first in the Tri-County League Championships for the Sharks, in When she is not in the water, Stephanie can be found volunteering for the Literary Network of Greater Cincinnati or practicing her piano and viola. Stephanie can t wait to return for her third year on the Sharks and looks forward to a summer full of coaching, swim lessons and fun. 9

10 Assistant Coach: Ryan Hunt Five Seasons Sharks Ryan is entering his senior year at CHCA where he has swum for the varsity team for the past three seasons. He swam competitively for eight years on many teams, including: Landen YMCA, Countryside YMCA and the Five Seasons Sharks. Ryan also completed a three-week intensive training swimming session in Australia. He excels in the freestyle, butterfly and backstroke, qualifying for high school districts the past three years. Ryan also competes on the CHCA varsity Lacrosse and Cross County teams. He enjoys playing the trumpet and alto saxophone. Ryan performed the Star Spangled Banner, with his sax, at the districts swim championships in Mason. Ryan is planning on majoring in chemical engineering in college. He is looking forward to lifeguarding and coaching this summer at Five Seasons. Ryan loves helping kids strive to be the best that they can be and is thrilled to be joining the Sharks coaching staff this summer! Volunteer Coaches: Emma Periera CHCA High School Swim Team Volunteers In order to maintain our low registration fees, parent involvement is a must! The success of our team depends upon the support of our coaching staff and the active involvement of all parents. Our swim meets are parent run. Therefore, all parents must work at least three meets or 3 volunteer positions (e.g. two parents can volunteer at the same dual meet each in a different position which would cover 2 of 3 commitments per family). The positions are not difficult or challenging. However, they are difficult to do with a toddler by your side. We recommend that parents switch off with each other to ensure the safety of their children or use the childcare services offered by Five Seasons. The positions and brief descriptions are as follows: A TIMER is present at the end of each lane. Each timer uses a stopwatch to time each swimmer in his or her lane for each race. The team supplies stopwatches. There are 3 timers per lane for a swim meet. The home team provides two timers per lane and the away team provides one timer per lane. The HEAD TIMER starts their stopwatch and if a timer in a lane should not start their stopwatch on time (they will raise their hand), the head timer will go to that lane and time the swimmer for that particular race. 10

11 AGE GROUP PARENTS are responsible for getting swimmers to their appropriate starting block. For all meets, we will have specific age group parents for 6 & under, 7-8, 9-10, and year olds. RIBBON WRITERS assist in putting the pre-printed label on the ribbon. Each ribbon has the swimmer's name and time on it. SCOREKEEPERS work with the Hytek Coordinator helping with computer work, scoring and recording the reasons for disqualifications. Hytek training resources can be found at nager%20training-66.ppsx&page=resources&folder=media RUNNERS pick up each slip from the timers after they have recorded their times, and the runner takes the slips to the scorekeeper. There is a separate runner for officials to deliver DQ sheets to the scoring table. MEET PHOTOGRAPHER will take photos of all Five Seasons Swimmers (all age groups) during dual meets (action photos, group photos, etc.). It is suggested the person volunteering to do this for a dual meet has a camera capable of capturing high-speed action photos as well as stills (i.e. swimmers diving off the block, swimming mid-heat, friends posing, etc.) A digital SLR camera is one such camera. The Meet Photographer will then be responsible for uploading all the photos to the Official Swim Team Photo Site for sharing with all families within 3 days of the meet s end. OFFICIALS (**Additional training is necessary to perform these jobs. Please see a board member if you are interested in learning more about becoming an official.) The Starter ensures that the meet is run smoothly and begins each race. The Referee works with the starter to run the meet. The Stroke Judges (2 per meet) ensure that the rules relating to the style of swimming designated for the event are being observed and shall report any violations to the referee. The Turn Judges (2 per meet) ensure that when turning or finishing, the swimmer complies with the turning and finishing rules applicable to the stroke used. **Officials Training Meeting available for you to perform this volunteer position and to be qualified to be a Starter, Referee, and Turn/Stroke judging at a meet is: Tues., May 23th at Landen, 8873 Creekwood Lane, 45039, 7:15-9:00 PM. 11

12 Practice Schedule Tuesday, May 30 Friday, June 2, 2017: Manny swimmers attend schools that are in session until early June. In order to accommodate these swimmers, practices are held in the evening, from Tuesday, May 24 Friday, June 2. Practices will be outdoors unless weather prohibiting. 8 & under:: 6:00 pm 7:00 pm 9-18 year olds: 7:00 pm 8:00 pm Monday, June 5 Thursday, July 27: Practices are offered during the regular season Monday Friday with the exception of July 4th. Any changes or cancellations will be communicated through postings and the swim team website. I will remember that my child swims for his/her enjoyment not mine. 3. I will place the emotional and physical well being of my child ahead of a personal desire to win. 4. I will teach my child that doing one s best is as important as winning, so that my child will never feel defeated by the outcome of an event. 5. I will make my child feel like a winner every time by offering praise for competing fairly and trying hard. 6. I will never harass, ridicule, or yell at my child, his/her teammates, or opponents for any reason or for making mistakes or losing a competition. 7. I will remember that children learn best by example. I will applaud good performances by my child, his/her teammates, and their opponents. 8. I will never question or approach an official on any call. All questions are to be directed to the meet referee BY THE COACH. 9. I will respect and show appreciation for the many volunteers and paid staff who give their time to provide sport opportunities for my child, understanding that I have a responsibility to be a part of my child s development. 10. 16 Five Seasons Sharks Spirit Wear Order Form All spirit wear orders will be charged to the member account. If you wish to write a check, please write a check against your member account at the member services desk. Orders must be turned into the member services desk by May 26, 2017 and no changes or cancellations can be made after this date. T-shirt and Sweatshirt designs Extra team T-shirts are offered in youth sizes small (YS), medium (YM), and large (YL) as well as adult sizes small (AS), medium (AM), large (AL), and extra-large (AXL). Please specify youth or adult size. Program enrollment fee includes one T-shirt for the swimmer, any shirts ordered on this form are in addition to the shirt given for participation. Mid-weight hoodies will have same design as T-shirt on the front and the back. In addition, your name will be imprinted on the back. Please specify name(s) to be printed. Hoodies are offered in the same sizing as the T-shirts. Silicone swimming caps are great for kids with long and/or thick hair as they do not pull and snag hair like latex caps do, and they are a must for those with a latex allergy. There is a minimum order of two caps. Please specify the name to be printed on the cap. 17 2017 Five Seasons Sharks Swim Team Registration Form I certify that my child/children are in good health and have my permission to participate in practice, competition, and special events for the Five Seasons Sports Club Swim Team. It is expressly agreed that all use of Five Seasons Sports Club s facilities/programs shall be undertaken at the participant s sole risk, and the Club shall not be liable for injuries or damages to participants or users, including, without limitation, those injuries or damages resulting from acts of active or passive negligence on the part of the Club, its owners, officers, employees or agents. Each participant, for himself/herself and family members, and on behalf of his/her executors, administrators and assigns, expressly releases, forever discharges and waives any claims against the Club, its successors and assigns, as well as its owners, officers, employees and agents, from all such claims, injuries, damages, actions or causes of action.
