5 AQUATICS INFORMATION Pool Sizes and Gallons Our lap pools are 6 lane, 25 yard pools. Depths start at 3.5 and go to 10. Each pool holds about 170,000 gallons of water. The Hattiesburg Spa holds about 2000 gallons. The Petal Therapy pool holds about 7700 gallons of water. Temperatures The lap pools are held between 82 and 84 degrees. The Hattiesburg Spa is kept at a maximum of 102 degrees, while the Petal Therapy pool is kept about 93 degrees. Spa Cleaning Schedule (Hattiesburg) The Spa in Hattiesburg will be closed for cleaning on Thursdays between the hours of 1:30 and 4 pm. In order to have the healthiest water possible, the spa will also be drained as needed to protect the health of our members and guests. Hourly Breaks for Single Lifeguards During the school year, there will be only 1 lifeguard on duty between 9 am and 3 pm. To keep our members and guests as safe as possible, they will take a code mandated break for 10 minutes every hour during that time. Should that break occur during your time in the pool, you will be asked to exit the pool for 10 minutes. Hourly breaks will also apply to any other time where only 1 lifeguard is on duty. Surveillance Cameras To help ensure safety and the best environment possible, each pool has a camera system that records continuously. Recreational Water Illnesses To help keep our water clean and safe, please do not swim if you have diarrhea. Infants must wear swim diapers while in the pool. Also, please observe the following: - Don t swim if you ve had Diarrhea in the last two weeks - Don t swallow pool water - Take a soap shower before swimming - Have children take frequent bathroom breaks Circle Swimming Often times there is plenty of space in the pool to allow you to have your own lane. During our peak hours, we may ask you to share a lane with other swimmers. Here are a few tips when Circle Swimming: Find a lane with a swimmer that matches your speed Keep to your right when swimming Pass in the middle and pass quickly Wait until the other swimmer is at the wall, then ask to share the lane Drowning is the 2nd leading cause of death among children ages 1 to 4. Where do most child drownings occur? Home swimming pools. Summer 2018 Aquatics Program Guide 4

6 ENJOYING WATER SAFELY Minimum Age to Use the Pool Alone Children must be at least 10 years old and able to pass the swim test to be in the pool by themselves. A responsible individual at least 18 years old must be in the building at all times when an eligible child is alone in the pool. Swim Testing Policy The Y reserves the right to swim test any individual that uses the pool. Certain groups, like pool parties, will be swim tested before entering the water. Our swim test is a 15 yard swim. It must be swam on top of the water, without support and without stopping. Swimmers will be placed in one of three categories: Green Arm Band Unrestricted access to the pool Red Arm Band Swimmer is at least 4 tall and will be restricted to the shallow end Lifejacket Swimmer is less than 4 tall and will be restricted to the shallow end Active Supervision Children in lifejackets must have a responsible older individual in the water within arms reach at all times. Diving Diving is only allowed in the deep end. Divers must dive from the deep end wall, not the sides of the pool. Starting Blocks Starting blocks are only to be used under the direct supervision of a Y swim instructor or swim coach. Prolonged Breath Holding Prolonged breath holding is a dangerous activity that isn t shown to have any physical benefits. For the safety of all, prolonged breath holding is not allowed. Pool Toys Pool toys are allowed provided they don t affect the safety of other swimmers. To find out if your toy is allowed, please see the lifeguard. The Spa (Hattiesburg) Our Spa is an excellent place to relax or rest sore muscles after a workout. You must be 18 years old to use the spa. The Warm Water Pool (Petal) Our Therapy Pool is a great option for low intensity water workouts or just for relaxing. Children are allowed, but they must be able to stand with their mouth out of the water to use the Therapy Pool without a lifejacket. A responsible individual at least 18 years old must in the water with them at all times, regardless if they wear a lifejacket or not. SCUBA Equipment Use Air tanks used in SCUBA diving can be dangerous when improperly handled. For the safety of everyone that uses the pool, divers can use all SCUBA related equipment except compressed air tanks. This doesn t apply to Y sponsored SCUBA classes. Lightning The Y follows the American Meteorological Society recommendations. When there is thunder followed by lightning in within 30 seconds, the pool will be cleared until 30 minutes have passed from the last occurrence of lightning in this time frame. The lifeguard s job is to keep everyone in the pool safe. Please be respectful and obey the lifeguard when they provide directions. Summer 2018 Aquatics Program Guide 5

7 Aquatic Program Policies These are general program policies. See the appropriate program area for program specific information. Registration Deadline Registration for all classes closes the Friday before the class begins or when the class is full, whichever occurs first. Please check with the instructor to see if space is available if you want to enroll after the registration deadline. Refund Policy Refunds will only be issued when the class is cancelled or if the student is unable to meet the prerequisites (if applicable) of the class. If the class is cancelled, a full refund will be issued. If the student does not meet the prerequisites, then a refund minus materials will be issued. Make Up Classes If there is a pool, or weather issue closing the pool, make up classes will be scheduled for all affected classes. Otherwise, we do not offer make up classes. Class Minimum and Maximum Registration To maintain a quality learning experience, class minimum and maximum enrollments have been put into place. Please see the appropriate program area for details. Program Evaluations At the end of each program, we ask that you complete a quick evaluation of how we did. This helps us make continual improvements to our program delivery, and ultimately serve our members and guests better. This evaluation will be sent via . Cancellations From time to time, programs need to be cancelled for various reasons. We make every effort to contact the participants when this occurs. Our preferred method of contact is a phone call. While we do make every effort, we appreciate your understanding if you arrive to find a class cancelled. In nearly 9 out of 10 child drowning deaths, a parent or caregiver claimed to be watching the child at the time. About 19% of child drowning deaths occur in a pool with lifeguards. 8 Y Swim School Class Days & Times Classes meet Monday - Thursday for 2 weeks. Each class lasts 45 minutes. Fees Members Community Per sessions $85 $115 Semester $290 $405 High School $80 $120 Training Minimum Age for Enrollment Preschool 3-5 years old Levels years old Adult 3 years old High School Training Entering into 7th Grade Class Ratios Our class student-to-instructor ratios are capped at 1:3. What to Bring All students should being a swimsuit and towel. Goggles may be brought, but depending on the level they may not be used or be used sparingly. Goggles that cover the nose are not allowed in the Y Swim School. About our Program We use the YMCA of the USA Learn to Swim Program. We focus on technical swimming and swimming as a life skill, not just something to get a child from one side of the pool to the other. We don't believe someone has truly learned to swim until they know multiple strokes and can swim a long distance. The YMCA of the USA Learn to Swim program is broken down into 6 stages. On the first day of class, you will receive a flyer with all the stages, the skills they cover, and what it takes to complete each level. As your child finishes a level, they will receive a completion card. Your Child s Progression As your child is able to move up in the levels, we move your child up. We don t believe in making children wait to advance. When able we ll move your child to an appropriate level. Otherwise, if able, we ll group appropriate levels together or regroup the class so an instructor works with one level. Enrollment Deadline Please enroll for your class as early as possible, but at least 1 week prior to the start of the session. While we will make all efforts to include day of registrations, it may not be possible depending on number of students enrolled. Swimming is more than a physical skill, it s a language of movement. Swimming takes time to master, and children progress at their own rate. We don t force children to do things they re scared of, or that they re not ready to do. Instead, we take a more nurturing, student centered approach, use patience with the child s individual progress, and focus on students learning at a pace appropriate for them. 10 Y Swim School FAQs What dates are a semester? The specific dates vary from school year. In general, the semester will follow the traditional fall / spring school semesters. How many classes are in a session? There are 8 classes per session How will I know what level to enroll my child in? There are 3 ways: 1) You know what level your child is from prior classes taken. 2) You can consult the What Stage Am I placement guide found on the next page, or at the Member Service desk. What if I can t make it on a class day? Please see your instructor. They will work with you on having a make up day. Also, you can attend any class (at either branch) for your level in that week. If you take this option, please coordinate through your instructor to make sure we re not going over our 1:3 instructor-to -student ratio. If I register for the summer, can I attend unlimited sessions? No. Your registration is for a specific time only. What if I need to change to another day? Make ups will generally only be offered in the event of weather. If you need to miss a time, please see our staff for the possibility of attending another time that session. What if I enroll in the wrong level? If so, your instructor will work with you to place your child in the correct level. Depending on how many students are enrolled in a time, it may or may not be possible to keep your original enrollment day and time. Can I sign up for just 4 sessions? No. Our class structure for the session doesn't allow for 4 session enrollments. This will come in Summer of Can I go back and forth between Hattiesburg and Petal? Yes, but it s not encouraged. Please see Dewey Case if you re wanting to do so. Summer 2018 Aquatics Program Guide 9

12 Y Swim School Class Descriptions Stage 1: Water Acclimation Students develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water in stage 1. This stage lays the foundation that allows for a student s future progress in swimming. Students in this stage focus on the following: Exploring the aquatic environment and personal skills with instructor help Developing basic skills to propel and glide through the water with instructor help Learning basic aquatic safety and accepting some of the responsibility for safe practices Stage 2: Water Movement In this stage, students focus on body position and control, directional change, and forward movement in the water while also continuing to practice how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. Students in this stage focus on the following: Exploring the aquatic environment and personal skills without instructor help Developing basic skills to propel and glide through the water without instructor help Learning basic aquatic and boating safety and accepting some of the responsibility for safe practices Stage 3: Water Stamina In this stage, students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in previous stages in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action. Students in this stage focus on the following: Integrating arm action, leg action, and rhythmic breathing in back and front glides Developing forward movement on the front and back Practicing skills and safety techniques in deep water Stage 4: Stroke Introduction Students in this stage develop stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and learn the breaststroke kick and butterfly kick. Water safety is reinforced through treading water and elementary backstroke. Students in this stage focus on the following: Developing the front crawl and back crawl Introducing components of the breaststroke and butterfly Practicing safety techniques in deep water Stage 5: Stroke Development Students in this stage work on stroke technique and learn all major competitive strokes. The emphasis on water safety continues through treading water and sidestroke. Students in this stage focus on the following: Developing stamina in the front crawl and back crawl Developing the breaststroke and butterfly Building endurance techniques for deep-water safety Stage 6: Stroke Mechanics In this stage, students refine stroke technique on all major competitive strokes, learn about competitive swimming, and discover how to incorporate swimming into a healthy lifestyle. High School Maintenance (High School age) This group is a training group for those who swim competitively in high school. The class goal is to keep existing swimmers aerobically conditioned and maintain stroke competency. This is also a great class for aspiring high school swimmers to be able to become conditioned to swimming and proficient in strokes prior to the start of the competitive season. About our Program Our Family Learn to Swim program works to change your family tree. This program follows the same essential information found in the American Red Cross Learn to Swim curriculum, but we make adaptations that seek to involve the entire family instead of a specific age group. We focus on family interaction, facing fears together, the development of healthy behaviors and views in regards to swimming, as well as basic and technical swimming skills. Parent Involvement In addition to the parent learning swimming skills, the instructor will also work with the parent on learning how to help their child progress as a swimmer by using hands-on techniques. Your Family s Progression Because of the unique nature of this class, the progression of the entire family will vary. Each family member will have unique needs and unique challenges. As with any learn to swim program, the pace of learning cannot be guaranteed. Research out of the United Kingdom identifies several benefits of family based learning. Although the research focused on family literacy, several benefits can be applied to learning to swim as a family. Greater self confidence, increase in confidence and communication, decreased parental stress, increased ability, and bonding with children are found to improve when a family participates in learning together. 15 Did you know... There are about 3,533 fatal drowning cases every year in the US - or about 10 deaths per day. An additional 347 people die each year from drowning in boating related accidents. In 80% of drowning deaths, the person is at least 15 years old. African American children, ages 5-19, drown at a rate of over 5 times that of Caucasians. Among year old African American children, the drowning rate is TEN times higher than Caucasians. Summer 2018 Aquatics Program Guide 14
