5 AQUATICS INFORMATION Pool Sizes and Gallons Our lap pools are 6 lane, 25 yard pools. Depths start at 3.5 and go to 10. Each pool holds about 170,000 gallons of water. The Hattiesburg Spa holds about 2000 gallons. The Petal Therapy pool holds about 7700 gallons of water. Temperatures The lap pools are held between 82 and 84 degrees. The Hattiesburg Spa is kept at a maximum of 102 degrees, while the Petal Therapy pool is kept about 93 degrees. Spa Cleaning Schedule (Hattiesburg) The Spa in Hattiesburg will be closed for cleaning on Thursdays between the hours of 1:30 and 4 pm. In order to have the healthiest water possible, the spa will also be drained as needed to protect the health of our members and guests. Hourly Breaks for Single Lifeguards During the school year, there will be periods where only 1 lifeguard is on duty. To keep our members and guests as safe as possible, they will take a code mandated break for 10 minutes every hour during that time. This code is required by YMCA of the USA. Should that break occur during your time in the pool, you will be asked to exit the pool for 10 minutes. Surveillance Cameras To help ensure safety and the best environment possible, each pool has a camera system that records continuously. Recreational Water Illnesses To help keep our water clean and safe, please do not swim if you have diarrhea. Infants must wear swim diapers while in the pool. Also, please observe the following: - Don t swim if you ve had Diarrhea in the last two weeks - Don t swallow pool water - Take a soap shower before swimming - Have children take frequent bathroom breaks Circle Swimming Often times there is plenty of space in the pool to allow you to have your own lane. During our peak hours, we may ask you to share a lane with other swimmers. Here are a few tips when Circle Swimming: Find a lane with a swimmer that matches your speed Keep to your right when swimming Pass in the middle and pass quickly Wait until the other swimmer is at the wall, then ask to share the lane Drowning is the 2nd leading cause of death among children ages 1 to 4. Where do most child drownings occur? Home swimming pools. Spring Semester 2019 Aquatics Program Guide 4

A responsible individual at least 18 years old must be in the building at all times when an eligible child is alone in the pool. Swim Testing Policy The Y reserves the right to swim test any individual that uses the pool. Certain groups, like pool parties, will be swim tested before entering the water. Our swim test is a 15 yard swim. It must be swam on top of the water, without support and without stopping. This helps us make continual improvements to our program delivery, and ultimately serve our members and guests better. This evaluation will be sent via . Cancellations From time to time, programs need to be cancelled for various reasons. We make every effort to contact the participants when this occurs. Our preferred method of contact is a phone call. While we do make every effort, we appreciate your understanding if you arrive to find a class cancelled. In nearly 9 out of 10 child drowning deaths, a parent or caregiver claimed to be watching the child at the time. About 19% of child drowning deaths occur in a pool with lifeguards. 8 Y Swim School Class Days & Times Class days and times vary. Please see Member Service or the Aquatics Program poster for class dates and times. Fees Members Community Semester $120 $145 Mini-Session $70 $100 Enrollments can be prorated from time of registration. Minimum Age for Enrollment Parent/ Child: 6 months Preschool 3-5 years old Levels years old Adult 13 years old Class Ratios Our class student-to-instructor ratios are capped at 1:3, except for Parent/Child classes which are 1:6. What to Bring All students should being a swimsuit and towel. Goggles may be brought, but depending on the level they may not be used or be used sparingly. Goggles that cover the nose are not allowed in the Y Swim School. About our Program We use the American Red Cross Learn to Swim curriculum. We focus on technical swimming and swimming as a life skill, not just something to get a child from one side of the pool to the other. We don't believe someone has truly learned to swim until they know multiple strokes and can swim a long distance. The American Red Cross Learn to Swim program is broken down into 6 levels. On the first day of class, you will receive a flyer with all the levels, the skills they cover, and what it takes to complete each level. Your child will also receive a level card where you can track their progress. As your child completes the levels, they ll receive a sticker to show completion. Your Child s Progression As your child is able to move up in the levels, we move your child up. We don t believe in making children wait to advance. When able we ll move your child to an appropriate level. Otherwise, if able we ll group appropriate levels together or regroup the class so an instructor works with one level. Enrollment Deadline Please enroll for your class as early as possible, but at least 1 week prior to the start of the session. While we will make all efforts to include day of registrations, it may not be possible depending on current enrollment. Swimming is more than a physical skill, it s a language of movement. Swimming takes time to master, and children progress at their own rate. We don t force children to do things they re scared of, or that they re not ready to do. Instead, we take a more nurturing, student centered approach, use patience with the child s individual progress, and focus on students learning at a pace appropriate for them. 10 Y Swim School FAQs What dates are a semester? The specific dates vary from school year. In general, the semester will follow the traditional fall / spring school semesters. How many classes are in a semester? Attending one day a week, there are 12 total classes. How will I know what level to enroll my child in? There are 3 ways: 1) You know what level your child is from prior classes taken under the American Red Cross curriculum. 2) You can consult the What Level Is My Child placement guide found on the next page, or at the Member Service desk. 3) You can attend a complimentary assessment session on Monday s between 4 and 6 pm. What if I can t make it on a class day? Please see your instructor. They will work with you on having a make up day. Also, you can attend any class (at either branch) for your level in that week. If you take this option, please coordinate through your instructor to make sure we re not going over our 1:3 instructor-to -student ratio. Can I still enroll if I miss the first day of the semester? Absolutely! In fact, it s highly encouraged. You ll be prorated for the amount of classes left in the semester. Can I go back and forth between Hattiesburg and Petal? Yes, but it s not encouraged. Please see Dewey Case if you re wanting to do so. If I register for a semester can I attend unlimited sessions? No. Classes are based around attending once per week. Can I attend all 4 sessions in the same week? Yes, but it s not encouraged. Attending all 4 sessions in the same week will result in your child having multiple instructors. This may result in less than desirable outcomes. What if I need to change to another day? Please see your instructor and they ll help you with that process. What if I enroll in the wrong level? If so, your instructor will work with you to place your child in the correct level. Depending on how many students are enrolled in a time, it may or may not be possible to keep your original enrollment day and time. I m interested in Adult lessons, but there are no times listed, or the times listed don t work for me. Please enroll anyway. Once we receive your enrollment, one of our instructors will call you to set up a day and time for your lessons. If I sign up late in the semester, will my classes roll over into the next semester? No. Because each semester will have slightly different class options, students will need to re -enroll each semester. Can both parents attend Parent/Child classes? Absolutely! Our classes are all co-ed and both parents are highly encouraged to attend. Spring Semester 2019 Aquatics Program Guide 9

12 Y Swim School Class Descriptions Parent and Child Aquatics (6 months to approximately 3 years) Parents and children learn together to increase a child's comfort level in the water and build a foundation of basic skills, such as arm and leg movements and breath control. The two levels are fun-filled and help introduce water safety concepts, encouraging a healthy recreational habit that your entire family can enjoy. Preschool Aquatics (approximately 3 to 5 years old) Preschool-age children are taught basic aquatic safety and swimming skills, all the while increasing their comfort level in and around the water. Skills are age-appropriate, helping children achieve success on a regular basis and enjoy social interactions with other children. As in all Swimming and Water Safety courses, your child will always know that it s safety first. Learn-to-Swim (children approximately 6 years through 12) Designed to help participants achieve maximum success, Learn-to-Swim courses are based on a logical, six-level progression that helps swimmers of varying ages and abilities develop their water safety, survival and swim skills. All classes incorporate age appropriate water safety skills. Level 0 through 1: Introduction to Water Skills Teaches students basic water skills such as breath holding, floating, and extremely basic motions in the water. Level 2 through 3: Fundamental Aquatic Skills & Stroke Development Level 2 gives participants success with fundamental skills. Level 3 builds on the skills in Level 2 through additional guide practice in deeper water. Swim strokes are Level 4 through 6: Stroke Improvement, Stroke Refinement and Stroke Efficiency Develops confidence in the skills learned and improves other aquatic skills. Refines the strokes so participants swim them with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Level 6 for more advanced participants. Adult Swim (Teens through Adults) American Red Cross Adult Swim is intended for teens and adults who wish to improve their knowledge and skill for many reasons. It may be to overcome their fear of the water and to learn the basic skills and achieve a minimum level of water competency to improve their skill and technique either to increase their level of safety to improve their health and fitness, or to perhaps compete in triathlons, or even compete in swim meets. BSA Swimming Merit Badge Training This group is a training group for those who participate in Boy Scouts. The class goal is to help Scouts learn the swimming skills necessary to complete their swimming merit badge. This class is not a beginning swimming class. Scouts are expected to have basic swimming skills, including being able to float and move in the deep end, upon enrollment. These series of classes have a minimum enrollment of 5 Scouts and a maximum of 10 enrolled per class. Spring Semester 2019 Aquatics Program Guide 11

Goggles may be brought, but depending on the level they may not be used or be used sparingly. Goggles that cover the nose are not allowed. About our Program Our Family Learn to Swim program works to change your family tree. This program follows the same essential information found in the American Red Cross Learn to Swim curriculum, but we make adaptations that seek to involve the entire family instead of a specific age group. We focus on family interaction, facing fears together, the development of healthy behaviors and views in regards to swimming, as well as basic and technical swimming skills. Parent Involvement In addition to the parent learning swimming skills, the instructor will also work with the parent on learning how to help their child progress as a swimmer by using hands-on techniques. Your Family s Progression Because of the unique nature of this class, the progression of the entire family will vary. Each family member will have unique needs and unique challenges. As with any learn to swim program, the pace of learning cannot be guaranteed. Research out of the United Kingdom identifies several benefits of family based learning. Although the research focused on family literacy, several benefits can be applied to learning to swim as a family. Greater self confidence, increase in confidence and communication, decreased parental stress, increased ability, and bonding with children are found to improve when a family participates in learning together.
