Ohio will host four teams in three days this weekend, beginning with Indiana on Friday, continuing with Eastern Kentucky and Delaware on Saturday and completing the weekend with its fi rst-ever meeting against Missouri State on Sunday. The Bobcats hold a collective 5-1 record against the weekend s opponents, with the lone loss coming at the hands of Big Ten foe Indiana. The Bobcats have already proven to be in top form for defending their MAC title. Ohio Volleyball heads into the weekend leading the conference in a pair of categories: hitting percentage (.272/ game) and blocks (2.74/game). The Bobcats come into the weekend at 5-1 overall. After a three-match sweep in Wisconsin two weekends ago, the Bobcats once again took their show on the road last weekend. Sue Jacobi, Jane Sytsma and Meghan Simons were named to the Blue Raider Bash All-Tournament team during the road trip to Murfreesboro, Tenn., where the Bobcats went 2-1.

Hitting.441 on the season thus far, Systma leads the conference in hitting percentage, while Simons average of 1.26 blocks per set puts her atop the conference in that category. Bobcats Continue Tradition of Tough Non-Conference Play No stanger to tough early-season schedules, Ohio will once again take on one of the nation s most challenging non-conference slates in The Bobcats non-conference opponents combined to post a record of (.585) last season, while seven of Ohio s non-league opponents won at least 20 matches a year ago. The teams on Ohio s 2009 non-conference slate also fi gured prominently in last year s NCAA Championship, as seven of those squads qualifi ed for the 2009 national tournament. Herman Moving up Ohio s Career Kills Charts As the Bobcats return home this weekend, senior outside hitter Ellen Herman has the chance to overcome another hurdle on her path towards becoming the program s all-time kills leader. Herman, currently at 1,514 kills for her career, enters the weekend needing just 25 kills to pass Lori Dyer ( ) for second place on the overall career kills chart at (1,539). Herman s total also places her second all-time on the rally scoring career list. Herman trails only former teammate Melissa Griffi n (1,678) on the rally scoring list. Griffi n ( ) also holds the career overall record. Herman Also Looking to Make a Dent in the MAC Record Book Senior outside hitter Ellen Herman heads into the season s second weekend on the verge of cementing her name alongside the most accomplished offensive players in Mid-American Conference history. As the 2009 season marches on, she needs 25 kills to supplant fellow Bobcat Lori Dyer ( ) in 10th place on the MAC s career kills chart (1,539), and 535 attacks to move past former Ball State star Kelly Cochran for 10th on the league career attempts ledger (4,219). Ohio s Senior Middles Have a Shot to Make History Senior middle blockers Jane Sytsma and Meghan Simons enter the season with a chance to become the fi rst two members of the Bobcats 300-block club to play on the same Ohio team. Sytsma became the ninth member of that elite group in the latter stages of the 2008 season and heads into the weekend with 328 total blocks for her career, good for seventh on the Ohio charts. Simons has 231 total blocks her credit and needs 69 more to complete the Bobcats unprecedented double. Sytsma and Simons each deadlocked for the team lead with 109 total blocks in 2008, with the latter pacing the Bobcats with an average of 0.98 blocks per set.

3 Sytsma Not Just a Defensive Force at the Net One of just nine players in program history to amass more than 300 blocks for her career, senior middle blocker Jane Sytsma has a well-deserved reputation as a force at the net. Sytma s net prowess, however, carries over the offensive side of the game, where she currently ranks 10th on the program s rally-scoring career kills list with 653 terminations. Sytsma was a major factor in Ohio s success at the season-opening InnTowner Invitational, averaging 2.90 kills per set on a team-best.442 hitting to earn All-Tournament Team accolades. Simons Seeking Another Jump in Hitting Percentage Senior middle blocker Meghan Simons ranked among the MAC leaders in hitting percentage in 2008 with a mark of.323, good for seventh place on the program s rally-scoring single-season list and eighth on the overall season chart. The fi gure was also an improvement of 51 points over her mark of.272 from the 2007 campaign, her fi rst with the Bobcats. With a similar improvement in 2009, Simons would be in position to challenge the program s overall and rally-scoring single-season hitting percentage records, which were both set by former Ohio All-American Melissa Griffi n with a mark of.379 in Just two weeks into the season, Simon is already among the MAC leaders, ranking No. 8 with an overall hitting percentage of.312. Petrulis Sights Set on 1,000 Digs After anchoring Ohio s back row last season and leading the team with an average of 3.42 digs per set, senior libero Sarah Petrulis has a shot this season to become just the ninth player in program history to reach the 1,000-career dig plateau. Petrulis has registered 65 total digs this season to bring her career total to 698, just 302 away from the milestone. During the season-opening weekend s InnTowner Invitational hosted by the University of Wisconsin, she was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 3.40 digs per set and moving past former teammate Janice Matacic into ninth place on the program s rally scoring career digs chart. Post-erizing the Competition Sophomore opposite hitter/middle blocker Katie Post entered the 2009 season with no aces to her credit. That statistic didn t make it out of the fi rst weekend of the new campaign, as the Streamwood, Ill., native tied for the team lead with six aces. Post ripped a quartet of service winners against Duke, including three in a single set and consecutive aces to clinch Ohio s fi rst-set victory, to propel the Bobcats to a dozen aces on the night. Post added a pair of aces during the second weekend of competition, bringing her season total to eight thus far in Making it Raines Freshman defensive specialist Lauren Raines didn t wait long to make an impact on the collegiate level, dealing out six aces in 10 sets at the InnTowner Invitational to help the Bobcats claim the tournament title. Raines weekend total ties her with teammate Ellen Herman for seventh on Ohio s freshman rally scoring records list. With one more service winner, Raines will tie former Ohio setter Jill DeArmond for sixth on the chart. BISON/AVCA TOP 25 POLL Rank School Pts. Rec. The Bobcats have been automatic since the beginning of the 2008 season when taking the fi rst two sets of a contest, winning all 17 matches in which they held a 2-0 advantage at the break..200 is the Tipping Point for Ohio When hitting percentage is used as a guage of success, the numbers show that the.200 mark is the number to hit for the Bobcats. Since head coach Ryan Theis took over prior to the 2008 season, Ohio has compiled a 26-2 record when converting at a rate of.200 or better, including a 6-0 mark when hitting.300 or better. On the fl ip side, the Green & White has amassed a 21-4 record when holding its opponents under the.200 mark in the hitting percentage department. Herman One of Few to Hit the 30-Kill Mark in 2008 Despite the switch to 25-point sets in 2008 that made it even more of a daunting task to reach the 30-kill mark in a match, outside hitter Ellen Herman was able to join that club on Dec. 5 when she piled up 32 terminations against Yale. Herman was one of just 15 players in the nation to reach the 30-kill mark a year ago, and one of just nine from

Ohio has piled up 173 victories since the streak began in 2002, an average of 24.7 per campaign. Bobcats Post Perfect APR for Second-Straight Year The Ohio volleyball team was once again perfect when the latest Academic Progress Rate (APR) data was released in late April, earning a multi-year score of for the second-consecutive year. The most recent APR scores were based on data from the , , and academic years. The APR calculates an individual institution s level of academic achievement within its athletic program. Based upon the key factors of athletic eligibility and retention, these elements yield a numerical guage of a program s academic performance that can be comparted to companion sports within a single program, against conference competitors or to national norms. Bobcats Earn Academic Acclaim from NCAA Ohio was honored in late April by the NCAA as one of just 49 collegiate women s volleyball teams in the nation to garner the Public Recognition Award, given annually to teams that rank in the top10 percent in their respective sports in Academic Progress Rate (APR). After also receiving the accolade in 2007, the Bobcats were one of just 33 repeat honorees, and one of just 12 NCAA Championship qualifi ers from 2008 to make the cut. Herman Trains with Team USA in Golden State Senior outside hitter Ellen Herman spent the latter part of June in Anaheim, Calif., where she trained with the U.S. Women s National Team as the reigning Olympic silver-medal winners began preparations for the 2009 Pan Am Cup. An annual staple of the Team USA schedule, the Pan Am Cup serves as a qualifi er for the FIVB Grand Prix. Herman Once Again Shines on National Stage Senior outside hitter Ellen Herman once again reaffirmed her reputation as one of the top young players in the nation during the spring of 2009, garnering all-tournament honors at the USA Adult Open Volleyball Championships after leading the U.S. National Women s A2 Red team to the silver medal in the women s open division. At the 2008 edition of the tournament, Herman earned Most Valuable Player recognition for leading the same U.S. A2 Red squad to its second-ever women s open division title, and its fi rst in four years. Theis 2008 Winning Percentage Among Best for Coaches in First Year at Institution Ohio head coach Ryan Theis led the Bobcats to a.750 winning percentage in his fi rst year at the helm, the second-best mark in the nation last season by a coach in his or her fi rst year at an institution. Among the top fi ve coaches in the department last season (listed below), Theis was the only fl oor general to take his team to the NCAA Championship in his fi rst year at the school. Since the tournament moved to that venue in 2005, the Bobcats have compiled an 11-1 record and won three titles in the Glass City. Ohio to Once Again Join in Fight Against Breast Cancer On Oct. 10, the Bobcats will once again use the Battle of the Bricks rivalry with Miami as an occasion to support the Side-Out Foundation and the Dig Pink Program s battle against breast cancer. Ohio raised $3,000 dollars for the cause during last November s fi ve-set thriller with the RedHawks. More information on helping the Bobcats support the cause will be released at a later date.
